Stop the Nonconsensual Use of Nude Images in Research

In order to train, test, and evaluate nudity detection models, machine learning researchers typically rely on nude images scraped from the Internet. Our research finds that this content is collected and, in some cases, subsequently distributed by researchers without consent, leading to potential misuse and exacerbating harm against the subjects depicted. This position paper argues that the distribution of nonconsensually collected nude images by researchers perpetuates image-based sexual abuse and that the machine learning community should stop the nonconsensual use of nude images in research. To characterize the scope and nature of this problem, we conducted a systematic review of papers published in computing venues that collect and use nude images. Our results paint a grim reality: norms around the usage of nude images are sparse, leading to a litany of problematic practices like distributing and publishing nude images with uncensored faces, and intentionally collecting and sharing abusive content. We conclude with a call-to-action for publishing venues and a vision for research in nudity detection that balances user agency with concrete research objectives.

Global Patterns of Viral Content on WhatsApp

This paper explores the nature and spread of viral WhatsApp content among everyday users in three diverse countries: India, Indonesia, and Colombia. By analyzing hundreds of viral messages collected with participants' consent from private WhatsApp groups, we provide one of the first cross-cultural categorizations of viral content on WhatsApp. Despite the differences in cultural and geographic settings, our findings reveal striking similarities in the types of groups users engage with and the viral content they receive, particularly in the prevalence of misinformation. Our comparative analysis shows that viral content often includes political and religious narratives, with misinformation frequently recirculated despite prior debunking by fact-checking organizations. These parallels suggest that closed messaging platforms like WhatsApp facilitate similar patterns of information dissemination across different cultural contexts. This work contributes to the broader understanding of global digital communication ecosystems and provides a foundation for future research on information flow and moderation strategies in private messaging platforms.

New Product Development (NPD) through Social Media-based Analysis by Comparing Word2Vec and BERT Word Embeddings

This study introduces novel methods for sentiment and opinion classification of tweets to support the New Product Development (NPD) process. Two popular word embedding techniques, Word2Vec and BERT, were evaluated as inputs for classic Machine Learning and Deep Learning algorithms to identify the best-performing approach in sentiment analysis and opinion detection with limited data. The results revealed that BERT word embeddings combined with Balanced Random Forest yielded the most accurate single model for both sentiment analysis and opinion detection on a use case. Additionally, the paper provides feedback for future product development performing word graph analysis of the tweets with same sentiment to highlight potential areas of improvement.
