Insights from the exact analytical solution of periodically driven transverse field Ising chain

We derive an exact analytical expression at stroboscopic intervals for the time-dependent wave function of a class of integrable quantum many-body systems, driven by the periodic delta-kick protocol. To investigate long-time dynamics, we use the wave function to obtain an exact analytical expression for the expectation values of the defect density, magnetization, residual energy, fidelity, and the correlation function after the $n$th drive cycle. Periodically driven integrable closed quantum systems absorb energy, and the long-time universal dynamics are described by the periodic generalized Gibbs ensemble (GGE). We demonstrate that the expectation values of all observables are divided into two parts: one highly oscillatory term that depends on the drive cycle n, and the rest of the terms are independent of it. Typically, the $n$-independent part constitutes the saturation at large n and periodic GGE. The contribution from the highly oscillatory term vanishes in large $n$. We also generalize our formalism to include square pulse and sinusoidal driving protocols.

Linear non-saturating magnetoresistance and superconductivity in epitaxial thin films of YbSb$_{2}$

Rare-earth diantimonides display intriguing ground states often associated with structural order, which can be manipulated in thin film geometries. In this study, we report epitaxial synthesis of one such compound, YbSb$_{2}$, on III-V substrates using molecular-beam epitaxy. The synthesized thin films exhibit large, non-saturating, linear magnetoresistance across a wide magnetic field range. Additionally, they demonstrate superconducting properties, with a critical temperature of $\approx$ 1.025 K and a critical field of $\approx$ 83.85 Oe, consistent with the reports in bulk single crystals. While YbSb$_{2}$ has been classified as a Type-I superconductor in its bulk form, our findings provide evidence of a mixed state in the epitaxial thin films. This work paves the way for controlling the electronic ground state in this class of materials through thin film engineering.

A compact inertial nano-positioner operating at cryogenic temperatures

Nano-positioning plays a very important role in applications such as scanning probe microscopy and optics. We report the development of a compact inertial nanopositioner along with fully computer interfaced electronics operating down to 2 K, and its use in our fully automated needle-anvil type Point Contact Andreev Reflection (PCAR) apparatus. We also present the fully automated operational procedures using LabVIEW interface with our home-built electronics. The point contact spectroscopy probe has been successfully used to perform PCAR measurements on elemental superconductors at low temperatures. The small footprint of our nano-positioner makes it ideally suited for incorporation in low temperature scanning probe microscopes and makes this design versatile for various research and industrial purposes.

A Hybrid Machine Learning Framework for Predicting Hydrogen Storage Capacities in Metal Hydrides: Unsupervised Feature Learning with Deep Neural Networks

In this study, we present a sophisticated hybrid machine-learning framework that significantly improves the accuracy of predicting hydrogen storage capacities in metal hydrides. This is a critical challenge due to the scarcity of experimental data and the complexity of high-dimensional feature spaces. Our approach employs the power of unsupervised learning through the use of a state-of-the-art autoencoder. This autoencoder is trained on elemental descriptors obtained from Mendeleev software, enabling the extraction of a meaningful and lower dimensional latent space from the input data. This latent representation serves as the basis for our deep multi-layer perceptron (MLP) model, which consists of five layers and shows good precision in predicting hydrogen storage capacities. Furthermore, our results show very good agreement with the results of density functional theory (DFT). In addition to addressing the limitations caused by limited and unevenly distributed data in the field of hydrogen storage materials, we also focus on discovering new materials that show promising opportunities for hydrogen storage. These materials were identified using both feature-based approaches and predictions generated by a large language model. Finally, our investigation into the effectiveness of transferring weights from the autoencoder to the MLP, in addition to the latent features, suggests that while this strategy slightly improves model performance indicated by a slightly higher R$^2$ value and lower RMSE, it emphasizes the intricate challenge of adapting pre-trained weights for specific supervised tasks.

Observable ${\rm Δ{N_{eff}}}$ in Dirac Scotogenic Model

We study the possibility of probing the radiative Dirac seesaw model with dark sector particles going inside the loop, popularly referred to as the Dirac scotogenic model via measurements of effective relativistic degrees of freedom ${\rm Δ{N_{eff}}}$ at cosmic microwave background (CMB) experiments. The loop suppression and additional free parameters involved in neutrino mass generation allow large ($\sim\mathcal{O}(1))$ coupling of light Dirac neutrinos with the dark sector particles. Such large Yukawa coupling not only dictates the relic abundance of heavy fermion singlet dark matter but also can lead to the thermalisation of the right chiral part of Dirac neutrinos, generating additional relativistic degrees of freedom ${\rm Δ{N_{eff}}}$. We find that the parameter space consistent with dark matter phenomenology and neutrino mass bounds can also be probed at future cosmic microwave background experiments like CMB-S4 via precision measurements of ${\rm Δ{N_{eff}}}$. The same parameter space, while leading to loop-suppressed direct detection cross-section of dark matter outside future sensitivities, can also have other interesting and complementary observational prospects via charged lepton flavour violation and collider signatures.

Anisotropic exciton polariton pairs as a platform for PT-symmetric non-Hermitian physics

Non-Hermitian systems with parity-time (PT) symmetry have been realized using optical constructs in the classical domain, leading to a plethora of non-intuitive phenomena. However, PT-symmetry in purely quantum non-Hermitian systems like microcavity exciton-polaritons has not been realized so far. Here we show how a pair of nearly orthogonal sets of anisotropic exciton-polaritons can offer a versatile platform for realizing multiple spectral degeneracies called Exceptional Points (EPs) and propose a roadmap to achieve a PT-symmetric system. Polarization-tunable coupling strength creates one class of EPs, while Voigt EPs are observed for specific orientations where splitting of polariton modes due to birefringence is compensated by Transverse Electric (TE) -Transverse Magnetic (TM) mode splitting. Thus, paired sets of polarized anisotropic microcavity exciton-polaritons can offer a promising platform not only for fundamental research in non-Hermitian quantum physics and topological polaritons, but also, we propose that it will be critical for realizing zero threshold lasers.

Origin of neutrino masses, dark matter, leptogenesis, and inflation in a seesaw model with triplets

We consider a new physics model, where the Standard Model (SM) is extended by hyperchargeless $Y=0$ triplet fermions and Higgs triplet with hypercharge $Y=2$. The first two generation fermion triplets are even under the $Z_2$ transformation. In contrast, the third fermion triplet and scalar triplet are odd under the same $Z_2$ transformation. It is a unifying framework for the simultaneous explanation of neutrino mass and mixing, dark matter, baryogenesis, inflation, and reheating temperature of the Universe. The two $Z_2$ even neutral fermions explain the neutrino low energy variables, whereas the third one can serve as a viable dark matter candidate, explaining the exact relic density. The scalar triplet is coupled nonminimally to gravity and forms the inflaton. We calculate the inflationary parameters and find them consistent with the new Planck-2018 constraints. We also do the reheating analysis for the inflaton decays/annihilations to relativistic SM particles. The triplet fermions associated with $Z_2$ even sector can provide the observed baryon asymmetry of the Universe at the TeV scale.

Computational design of novel MAX phase alloys for potential hydrogen storage media combining first principles and cluster expansion methods

Finding a suitable material for hydrogen storage at ambient atmospheric conditions is challenging for material scientists and chemists. In this work, using a first principles based cluster expansion approach, the hydrogen storage capacity of Ti2AC (A = Al,Ti, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn) MAX phase and its alloys were studied. We found that hydrogen is energetically stable in Ti-A layers in which the tetrahedral site consisting of one A atom and three Ti atoms is energetically more favorable for hydrogen adsorption than other sites in the Ti-A layer. Ti2CuC has the highest hydrogen adsorption energy than other Ti2AC phases. We find that 83.33% Cu doped Ti2AlxCu1-xC alloy structure is both energetically and dynamically stable and can store 3.66 wt% hydrogen at ambient atmospheric conditions, which is higher than both Ti2AlC and Ti2CuC phase. These findings indicate that the hydrogen capacity of the MAX phase can be significantly improved by doping an appropriate atom species.

Spin-Polarisation measurement using NbN-Insulator-Ferromagnet Tunnel Junction with oxidized barrier

We report a two-step process for the fabrication of superconductor-insulator-normal metal tunnel junctions using NbN as the superconducting electrode and its surface oxide as the insulating tunnel barrier, and investigate its efficacy in measuring spin-polarisation of ferromagnets using the Meservey-Tedrow technique. We observe that for NbN film thickness below 10 nm, under the application of parallel magnetic field, the superconducting density of states show clear "Zeeman" splitting into spin-up and spin-down sub-bands. Tunnelling measurements on devices where ferromagnetic Co is used as the normal electrode shows that these devices can be used to reliably measure spin polarisation of a ferromagnet at temperatures up to 1.6 K. The simplicity of our fabrication process, and the ability to perform spin-polarisation measurements at 4He temperatures makes NbN a very attractive candidate for spin polarisation measurements.

A new palladium alloy with near-ideal hydrogen storage performance

Hydrogen-based fuels demand high-density storage that can operate under ambient temperatures. Pd and its alloys are the most investigated metal hydrides for hydrogen fuel cell applications. This study presented an alternative Pd alloy for hydrogen storage that can store and release hydrogen at room temperature. The surface of the most studied Pd (110) was modified with Au and Rh so that the hydrogen adsorption energy was 0.49 eV and the release temperature was 365 K. Both values are quite near to the optimum values for the adsorption energy and release temperature of a hydrogen fuel cell in real-world usage.

A steady state approach for studying valley relaxation using optical vortex beam

Spin-valley coupling in monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides gives rise to valley polarization and coherence effect, limited by intervalley scattering caused by exciton-phonon, exciton-impurity, and electron-hole exchange interaction (EHEI). We explore an approach to tune the EHEI by controlling excitons center of mass momentum (COM) utilizing the photon distribution of higher-order optical vortex beam. By virtue of this, we have observed excitons COM-dependent valley depolarization and decoherence which gives us the ability to measure the timescale associated with valley dynamics in the steady-state measurement. Our steady-state technique to probe the valley dynamics can open up a new paradigm to explore the physics of excitons in two-dimensional systems.

Five-zero texture in neutrino-dark matter model within the framework of minimal extended seesaw

We study a model of neutrino and dark matter within the framework of a minimal extended seesaw. This model is based on $A_4$ flavour symmetry along with the discrete $Z_3\times Z_4$ symmetry to stabilize the dark matter and construct desired mass matrices for neutrino mass. Five-zero textures are imposed in the final $4\times4$ active-sterile mass matrix, which significantly reduces free parameter in the model. Three right-handed neutrinos were considered, two of them have nearly degenerate masses which help us to achieve baryogenesis via resonant leptogenesis. A singlet fermion (sterile neutrino) with mass $\sim\mathcal{O}$(eV) is also considered, and we are able to put bounds on active-sterile mixing parameters via neutrino oscillation data. Resonant enhancement of lepton asymmetry is studied at TeV scale, where we discuss a few aspects of baryogenesis considering the flavour effects. Possibility of improvement in effective mass from $0νββ$ in the presence of a single generation of sterile neutrino flavour is also studied within the fermion sector. In the scalar sector, the imaginary component of the complex singlet scalar is behaving as a potential dark matter candidate and simultaneously the real part of the complex scalar is associated with the fermion sector for sterile mass generation. A broad region of dark matter mass is analyzed from various annihilation processes, and the VEV of the complex scalar plays a pivotal role to achieve the observed relic density at the right ballpark.

The FIMP-WIMP dark matter in the extended singlet scalar model

We explore the simplest viable dark matter model with a real singlet scalar, vector-like singlet and doublet fermions. The Yukawa couplings associated with the fermion sector play a crucial role in getting the current relic density through Freeze-in and Freeze-out mechanism. We discuss the constraints from the recent muon anomalous magnetic moment experimental data and relic density. We also perform the collider analysis for the FIMP dark matter in the context of 14 TeV LHC experiments with the MATHUSLA100/200 detector. Our analysis shows that one can get enough events $>3$ for heavy charged fermion track at 14 TeV LHC with an integrated luminosity $\mathcal{L}=10^6 ~{\rm fb^{-1}}$.

FIMP DM in the Extended Hyperchargeless Higgs Triplet Model

We perform an exclusive study on the Feebly Interacting Massive Particle (FIMP) dark matter candidate in an extended hyperchargeless ($Y=0$) Higgs triplet model. The additional $Z_2$ odd neutral fermion singlet plays the role of dark matter with support from two other vector-like fermion doublets. The mixing between the neutral component of a doublet and singlet fermions controls the current relic density through the Freeze-in mechanism, whereas the additional doublet fermion helps to get the neutrino mass and mixing angles. We obtain a broad region of the parameter spaces satisfying the current relic density and neutrino mass and mixing angles.

Theoretical and phenomenological consequences of active and sterile neutrino within Beyond Standard Model framework

This thesis address theoretical and phenomenological aspects of active and sterile mixing pattern within minimal extended seesaw frameworks. It consists of six chapters, where chapters one and six are dedicated to introduction and conclusion chapters, respectively. In chapter two, we study active-sterile phenomenology with a single generation of sterile neutrino ($m_S\sim \mathcal{O}$(eV)) along with the three active neutrinos. Three independent cases for sterile mass matrices are studied in both normal and inverted hierarchy mass ordering. Chapter three is an extension of the previous chapter. The neutrino mass generation and baryogenesis {\it via} thermal leptogenesis are studied in the fermionic sector. On the other hand, an extended multi Higgs doublet model is studied in the scalar sector. Among the three Higgs doublet, one of them does not acquire any vacuum expectation value (VEV); hence, it behaves as an inert Higgs. The lightest component of this behaves as a viable dark matter candidate. Within MES, sterile mass can be stressed up to the $keV$ scale. In the fourth chapter, we studied various phenomenologies considering sterile neutrino mass in the $keV$ range. This $keV$ scaled sterile neutrino also plays the role of dark matter candidate in our study. The fifth chapter is dedicated to the texture-zero neutrino dark matter model. We study active-sterile mixing, baryogenesis $via$ resonant leptogenesis and $0νββ$ in the fermion sector. While, in the scalar sector, the complex scalar flavon that gives rise to sterile mass takes part in dark matter study. The imaginary component of that scalar flavon is behaving as a viable dark matter candidate.

A new feasible dark matter region in the singlet scalar scotogenic model

We study a simplest viable dark matter model with a real singlet scalar, vector-like singlet and a doublet lepton. We find a considerable enhancement in the allowed region of the scalar dark matter parameter spaces under the influence of the new Yukawa coupling. The Yukawa coupling associate with the fermion sector heavily dominant the dark matter parameter spaces satisfying the current relic density of the Universe. Dilepton$+\slashed{E}_T$ signature arising from the new fermionic sector can observe at Large Hadron Collider (LHC). We perform such analysis in the context of 14 TeV LHC experiments with a future integrated luminosity of 3000 ${\rm fb^{-1}}$. We found that a large region of the parameter spaces can be probed by the LHC experiments. The projected exclusion/discovery reach of direct heavy charged fermion searches in this channels is analyzed by performing a detailed cut based collider analysis. The projected exclusion contour reaches up to $1050-1380~{\rm GeV}$ for 3000 ${\rm fb^{-1}}$ for a light dark matter $\mathcal{O}(10)$ GeV from searches in the $ pp \rightarrow E_1^\pm E_1^\mp, E_1^\pm\rightarrow l^\pm S \rightarrow ll + \slashed{E}_T$ channel.

Scalar dark matter and leptogenesis in the minimal scotogenic model

We study the minimal scotogenic model constituting an additional inert Higgs doublet and three sets of right-handed neutrinos. The scotogenic model connects dark matter, baryon asymmetry of the Universe and neutrino oscillation data. In our work, we obtain baryogenesis by the decay of TeV scale heavy neutral singlet fermion ($N_{2}$). We primarily focus on the intermediate-mass region of dark matter within $M_W<M_{DM}\le550$ GeV, where observed relic density is suppressed due to co-annihilation processes. We consider thermal as well as the non-thermal approach of dark matter production and explore the possibility of the lightest stable candidate being a dark matter candidate. Within the inert Higgs doublet (IHD) desert, we explore a new allowed region of dark matter masses for the non-thermal generation of dark matter with a mass splitting of 10 GeV among the inert scalars. We also see the variation of relic abundance for unequal mass splitting among the scalars. The KamLand-Zen bound on the effective mass of the active neutrinos is also verified in this study.

Additional excitonic features and momentum-dark states in ReS2

Unidirectional in-plane structural anisotropy in Rhenium-based transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) introduces a new class of 2-D materials, exhibiting anisotropic optical properties. In this work, we perform temperature dependent, polarization-resolved photoluminescence and reflectance measurements on several-layer ReS$_{2}$. We discover two additional excitonic resonances (X$_{3}$ and X$_{4}$), which can be attributed to splitting of spin degenerate states. Strong in-plane oscillator strength of exciton species X$_{1}$ and X$_{2}$ are accompanied by weaker counterparts X$_{3}$ and X$_{4}$ with similar polarization orientations. The in-plane anisotropic dielectric function has been obtained for ReS$_{2}$ which is essential for engineering light matter coupling for polarization sensitive optoelectronic devices. Furthermore, our temperature dependent study revealed the existence of low-lying momentum-forbidden dark states causing an anomalous PL intensity variation at 30 K, which has been elucidated using a rate equation model involving phonon scattering from these states. Our findings of the additional excitonic features and the momentum-dark states can shed light on the true nature of the electronic band structure of ReS$_{2}$.
