Unified framework for heavy flavor and quarkonium production in high multiplicity p+p and p+A collisions at RHIC and LHC

We discuss the production of $D$-mesons and $J/ψ$ in high multiplicity proton-proton and proton-nucleus collisions within the Color-Glass-Condensate (CGC) framework. We demonstrate that the modification of the LHC data on $D$ and $J/ψ$ yields in high multiplicity events relative to minimum bias events arise from a significant enhancement of the gluon saturation scales of the corresponding rare parton configurations in the colliding protons and nuclei. For a given event multiplicity, we predict these relative yields to be energy independent from $\sqrt{s}=200$ GeV at RHIC to the highest LHC energies.

Hadronic observables in p+p and d+Au collisions at RHIC using CGC+PYTHIA

The IP-Glasma model of CGC combined with the Lund model of PYTHIA provides a very successful description of hadron production from gluon dominated non-equilibrium matter in various small collision systems. This new CGC+PYTHIA framework, naturally reproduces several characteristic features of the hadronic observables such as the mass ordering of $v_{2}(p_{T})$ and $\langle p_{T}\rangle$, often ascribed to collectivity driven by hydrodynamics at the LHC. In this contribution we extend our work to provide a systematic comparison of particle spectra and multiplicity distributions in p+p and d+Au collisions at the RHIC.

Features of the IP-Glasma

We discuss differences between the IP-Glasma model and typical wounded-nucleon model like initial conditions. We point out that the IP-Glasma initial state is more compact in the transverse plane and produces a significant initial flow, both of which contribute to an increased radial flow in the subsequent hydrodynamic evolution. A larger bulk viscosity, compared to calculations that use other initial state models, is required to compensate for these effects and find agreement with experimental data. We further demonstrate the importance of the initial momentum anisotropy of the glasma for anisotropy measures in small collision systems such as p+Pb.

Systematics of azimuthal anisotropy harmonics in proton-nucleus collisions at the LHC from the Color Glass Condensate

Simple power counting arguments in the dilute-dense framework of the Color Glass Condensate (CGC) Effective Field Theory predict that even and odd azimuthal anisotropy harmonics of two-particle correlations in proton-nucleus collisions at the LHC will respectively satisfy v^2_{2n} ~ N_{ch}^0 and v^2_{2n+1} ~ N_{ch}, where N_{ch} denotes the number of charged particles. We show that these expectations are borne out qualitatively, and even quantitatively, within systematic uncertainties, for v_2 and v_4 in comparisons with data from the ATLAS collaboration. We also observe that ATLAS data for the v_3 azimuthal harmonic are in excellent agreement with our qualitative expectation; quantitative comparisons are numerically challenging at present. The lessons from this study fully complement those gained by the recent comparison of the CGC dilute-dense framework [arXiv:1805.09342] to data from the PHENIX collaboration on small system collisions at RHIC.

Proton structure fluctuations: from HERA to the LHC

We constrain the amount of event-by-event fluctuations of the proton by comparing with the HERA coherent and incoherent diffractive $J/Ψ$ production data. We find that the HERA measurements prefer large geometric fluctuations. We then include the constrained fluctuating proton shapes in viscous hydrodynamical simulations of the proton-nucleus collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=5.02$ TeV, and find a good description of the mean transverse momentum and flow harmonics measured at the LHC.

Proton structure fluctuations: constraints from HERA and applications to p+A collisions

We constrain proton structure fluctuations at small-$x$ by comparing with the HERA diffractive vector meson production data, and find that large geometric fluctuations in the proton wave function are needed. Hydrodynamical simulations of proton-nucleus collisions including the fluctuating proton structure are found to be compatible with the momentum anisotropies measured at the LHC.

Imprints of fluctuating proton shapes on flow in proton-lead collisions at the LHC

Results for particle production in root-s = 5.02 TeV p+Pb collisions at the Large Hadron Collider within a combined classical Yang-Mills and relativistic viscous hydrodynamic calculation are presented. We emphasize the importance of sub-nucleon scale fluctuations in the proton projectile to describe the experimentally observed azimuthal harmonic coefficients, demonstrating their sensitivity to the proton shape. We stress that the proton shape and its fluctuations are not free parameters in our calculations. Instead, they have been constrained using experimental data from HERA on exclusive vector meson production. Including temperature dependent shear and bulk viscosities, as well as UrQMD for the low temperature regime, we present results for mean transverse momenta, harmonic flow coefficients for charged hadrons and identified particles, as well as Hanbury-Brown-Twiss radii.

Disentangling flow and signals of Chiral Magnetic Effect in U+U, Au+Au and p+Au collisions

We present STAR measurements of the charge-dependent three-particle correlator $γ^{a,b}=\langle \cos(ϕ_1^{a}+ϕ_2^{b}-2ϕ_3)\rangle/v_{2}\{2\}$ and elliptic flow $v_{2}\{2\}$ in U+U, Au+Au and p+Au collisions at RHIC. The difference $Δγ= γ(\rm{opposite\!-\!sign})\!-\!γ(\rm{same\!-\!sign})$ measures charge separation across the reaction plane, a predicted signal of the Chiral Magnetic Effect (CME). Although charge separation has been observed, it has been argued that the measured separation can also be explained by elliptic flow related backgrounds. In order to separate the two effects, we perform measurements of the $γ$-correlator where background expectations differ from magnetic field driven effects. A differential measurement of $γ$ with the relative pseudorapidity ($Δη$) between the first and second particles indicate that $Δγ$ in peripheral A+A and p+A collisions are dominated by short-range correlations in $Δη$. However, a relatively wider component of the correlation in $Δη$ tends to vanish the same way as projected magnetic field as predicted by MC-Glauber simulations.

Collectivity in small collision systems : an initial state perspective

Measurements of multi-particle correlations in the collisions of small systems such as $p+p$, $p/d/^3He+A$ show striking similarity to the observations in heavy ion collisions. A number of observables measured in the high multiplicity events of these systems resemble features that are attributed to collectivity driven by hydrodynamics. However alternative explanations based on initial state dynamics are able to describe many characteristic features of these measurements. In this brief review we highlight some of the recent developments and outstanding issues in this direction.

Studies of three-particle correlations and reaction-plane correlators from STAR

We present STAR measurements of various harmonics of three-particle correlations in $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200$ GeV Au+Au collisions at RHIC. The quantity $\langle\cos(mϕ_1+nϕ_2-(m+n)ϕ_3)\rangle$ is measured for inclusive charged particles for different harmonics $m$ and $n$ as a function of collision centrality, transverse momentum $p_T$ and relative pseudorapidity $Δη$. These observables provide detailed information on global event properties like correlations between event planes of different harmonics and are particularly sensitive to the expansion dynamics of the matter produced in the collisions. We compare our measurements to different viscous hydrodynamic models. We argue that these measurements probe the three-dimensional structure of the initial state and provide unique ways to constrain the transport parameters involved in hydrodynamic modeling of heavy-ion collisions.

Mass ordering of spectra from fragmentation of saturated gluon states in high multiplicity proton-proton collisions

The mass ordering of mean transverse momentum $\left $ and of the Fourier harmonic coefficient $v_2 (p_T)$ of azimuthally anisotropic particle distributions in high energy hadron collisions is often interpreted as evidence for the hydrodynamic flow of the matter produced. We investigate an alternative initial state interpretation of this pattern in high multiplicity proton-proton collisions at the LHC. The QCD Yang-Mills equations describing the dynamics of saturated gluons are solved numerically with initial conditions obtained from the Color Glass Condensate based IP-Glasma model. The gluons are subsequently fragmented into various hadron species employing the well established Lund string fragmentation algorithm of the PYTHIA event generator. We find that this ab initio initial state approach reproduces characteristic features of bulk spectra, in particular the particle mass dependence of $\left $ and $v_2 (p_T)$.

Energy dependence of the ridge in high multiplicity proton-proton collisions

We demonstrate that the recent measurement of azimuthally collimated, long range rapidity ("ridge") correlations in $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV proton-proton (p+p) collisions by the ATLAS collaboration at the LHC are in agreement with expectations from the color glass condensate effective theory of high energy QCD. The observation that the integrated near side yield as a function of multiplicity is independent of collision energy is a natural consequence of the fact that multiparticle production is driven by a single semi-hard saturation scale in the color glass condensate framework. We argue further that the azimuthal structure of these recent ATLAS ridge measurements strongly constrain hydrodynamic interpretations of such correlations in high multiplicity p+p collisions.

Intrinsic Fluctuations of the Proton Saturation Momentum Scale in High Multiplicity p+p Collisions

High multiplicity events in p+p collisions are studied using the theory of the Color Glass Condensate. We show that intrinsic fluctuations of the proton saturation momentum scale are needed in addition to the sub-nucleonic color charge fluctuations to explain the very high multiplicity tail of distributions in p+p collisions. The origin of such intrinsic fluctuations are presumably non-perturbative in nature. Classical Yang Mills simulations using the IP-Glasma model are performed to make quantitative estimations. We find that fluctuations as large as $\cal O$(1) of the average values of the saturation momentum scale can lead to rare high multiplicity events seen in p+p data at RHIC and LHC energies. Using the available data on multiplicity distributions we try to constrain the distribution of the proton saturation momentum scale and make predictions for the multiplicity distribution in 13 TeV p+p collisions.

Separation of flow from chiral magnetic effect in U+U collisions using spectator asymmetry

We demonstrate that the prolate shape of the Uranium nucleus generates anti-correlation between spectator asymmetry and initial state ellipticity of the collision zone, providing a way to constrain the initial event shape in U+U collisions. As an application, we show that this can be used to separate the background contribution due to flow from the signals of chiral magnetic effect.

Initial state geometry and fluctuations in Au+Au, Cu+Au and U+U collisions at RHIC

We study within the IP-Glasma and two-component MC-Glauber models the effects of initial state geometry and fluctuations on multiplicities and eccentricities for several collision species at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). These include copper-gold (Cu+Au), gold-gold (Au+Au), and uranium-uranium (U+U) collisions. The multiplicity densities per participant pair are very similar in all systems studied. Ellipticities vary strongly between collision systems, most significantly for central collisions, while fluctuation driven odd moments vary little between systems. Event-by-event distributions of eccentricities in mid-central collisions are wider in Cu+Au relative to Au+Au and U+U systems. An anti-correlation between multiplicity and eccentricity is observed in ultra central U+U collisions which is weaker in the IP-Glasma model than the two-component MC-Glauber model. In ultra central Au+Au collisions the two models predict opposite signs for the slope of this correlation. Measurements of elliptic flow as a function of multiplicity in such central events can therefore be used to discriminate between models with qualitatively different particle production mechanisms.

Multiplicity distributions in p+p, p+A and A+A collisions from Yang-Mills dynamics

We compute transverse momentum and momentum integrated multiplicity distributions consistently in the IP-Glasma model for proton-proton and proton-lead collisions at the LHC, in deuteron-gold collisions at RHIC, and in heavy ion collisions at both RHIC and LHC energies. Several sources of sub-nucleon scale contributions to the multiplicity distributions are identified. Our results, which are constrained by inclusive and diffractive deeply inelastic scattering data from HERA, are compared to measured distributions for a range of collision energies. These results are an essential first step in quantifying the relative role of initial and final state effects on multiparticle correlations in light and heavy ion collisions.

Initial state geometry and the role of hydrodynamics in proton-proton, proton-nucleus and deuteron-nucleus collisions

We apply the successful Monte Carlo Glauber and IP-Glasma initial state models of heavy ion collisions to the much smaller size systems produced in proton-proton, proton-nucleus and deuteron- nucleus collisions. We observe a significantly greater sensitivity of the initial state geometry to details of multi-particle production in these models compared to nucleus-nucleus collisions. In particular, we find that the size of the system produced in p+A collisions is very similar to the one produced in p+p collisions, and predict comparable Hanbury-Brown-Twiss radii in the absence of flow in both systems. Differences in the eccentricities computed in the models are large, while differences amongst the generated flow coefficients v_2 and v_3 are smaller. For a large number of participants in proton-lead collisions, the v_2 generated in the IP-Glasma model is comparable to the value obtained in proton-proton collisions. Viscous corrections to flow are large over characteristic lifetimes in the smaller size systems. In contrast, viscous contributions are significantly diminished over the longer space-time evolution of a heavy ion collision.
