A Combinatorial Characterization of Sol 3-Manifolds

We show that there is a universal compact branched 3-manifold $W$ such that a closed 3-manifold $M$ immerses into $W$ if and only if $M$ admits a Sol structure. Equivalently, a closed 3-manifold is Sol if and only if it has a certain type of triangulation. The construction of $W$ is based on a regular language that characterizes Sol manifolds.

Combinatorial Characterizations and Branched Manifolds

A family of compact n-manifolds is locally combinatorially defined (LCD) if it can be specified by a finite number of local triangulations. We show that LCD is equivalent to the existence of a compact branched n-manifold W, such that the family is precisely those manifolds that immerse into W. In subsequent papers, the equivalence will be used to show that, for each of the eight Thurston geometries, the family of closed 3-manifolds admitting that geometry is LCD.

Shifts maps are not type-preserving

For a surface $S$ of sufficient complexity, Dehn twists act elliptically on the arc, curve, and relative arc graph of $S$. We show that composing a Dehn twist with a shift map results in a loxodromic isometry of the relative arc graph $\mathcal{A}(S,p)$ for any surface $S$ with an isolated puncture $p$ admitting a shift map. Therefore, shift maps are not type-preserving.

Thurston's Theorem: Entropy in Dimension One

In his paper, Thurston shows that a positive real number $h$ is the topological entropy for an ergodic traintrack representative of an outer automorphism of a free group if and only if its expansion constant $\lambda = e^h$ is a weak Perron number. This is a powerful result, answering a question analogous to one regarding surfaces and stretch factors of pseudo-Anosov homeomorphisms. However, much of the machinery used to prove this seminal theorem on traintrack maps is contained in the part of Thurston's paper on the entropy of postcritically finite interval maps and the proof difficult to parse. In this expository paper, we modernize Thurston's approach, fill in gaps in the original paper, and distill Thurston's methods to give a cohesive proof of the traintrack theorem. Of particular note is the addition of a proof of ergodicity of the traintrack representatives, which was missing in Thurston's paper.

Covers of surfaces, Kleinian groups, and the curve complex

We prove an effective version of a theorem relating curve complex distance to electric distance in hyperbolic 3-manifolds, up to errors that are polynomial in the complexity of the underlying surface. We use this to give an effective proof of a result regarding maps between curve complexes of surfaces induced by finite covers. As applications, we effectively relate the electric circumference of a fibered manifold to the curve complex translation length of its monodromy, and we give quantitative bounds on virtual specialness for cube complexes dual to curves on surfaces.

Stable commutator length on big mapping class groups

We study stable commutator length on mapping class groups of certain infinite-type surfaces. In particular, we show that stable commutator length defines a continuous function on the commutator subgroups of such infinite-type mapping class groups. We furthermore show that the commutator subgroups are open and closed subgroups and that the abelianizations are finitely generated in many cases. Our results apply to many popular infinite-type surfaces with locally coarsely bounded mapping class groups.

Free products from spinning and rotating families

The far-reaching work of Dahmani-Guirardel-Osin and recent work of Clay-Mangahas-Margalit provide geometric approaches to the study of the normal closure of a subgroup (or a collection of subgroups)in an ambient group $G$. Their work gives conditions under which the normal closure in $G$ is a free product. In this paper we unify their results and simplify and significantly shorten the proof of the Dahmani-Guirardel-Osin theorem.

A new construction of subgroups of big mapping class groups

We explicitly construct new subgroups of the mapping class groups of an uncountable collection of infinite-type surfaces, including, but not limited to, free groups, Baumslag-Solitar groups, mapping class groups of other surfaces, and a large collection of wreath products. For each such subgroup $H$ and surface $S$, we show that there are countably many non-conjugate embeddings of $H$ into $\textrm{Map}(S)$; in certain cases, there are uncountably many such embeddings. The images of each of these embeddings cannot lie in the isometry group of $S$ for any hyperbolic metric and are not contained in the closure of the compactly supported subgroup of $\textrm{Map}(S)$. In this sense, our construction is new and does not rely on previously known techniques for constructing subgroups of mapping class groups. Notably, our embeddings of $\textrm{Map}(S')$ into $\textrm{Map}(S)$ are not induced by embeddings of $S'$ into $S$. Our main tool for all of these constructions is the utilization of special homeomorphisms of $S$ called shift maps, and more generally, multipush maps.

Infinite-type loxodromic isometries of the relative arc graph

An infinite-type surface $\Sigma$ is of type $\mathcal{S}$ if it has an isolated puncture $p$ and admits shift maps. This includes all infinite-type surfaces with an isolated puncture outside of two sporadic classes. Given such a surface, we construct an infinite family of intrinsically infinite-type mapping classes that act loxodromically on the relative arc graph $\mathcal{A}(\Sigma, p)$. J. Bavard produced such an element for the plane minus a Cantor set, and our result gives the first examples of such mapping classes for all other surfaces of type $\mathcal{S}$. The elements we construct are the composition of three shift maps on $\Sigma$, and we give an alternate characterization of these elements as a composition of a pseudo-Anosov on a finite-type subsurface of $\Sigma$ and a standard shift map. We then explicitly find their limit points on the boundary of $\mathcal{A}(\Sigma,p)$ and their limiting geodesic laminations. Finally, we show that these infinite-type elements can be used to prove that Map$(\Sigma,p)$ has an infinite-dimensional space of quasimorphisms.

Isometry groups of infinite-genus hyperbolic surfaces

Given a 2-manifold, a fundamental question to ask is which groups can be realized as the isometry group of a Riemannan metric of constant curvature on the manifold. In this paper, we give a nearly complete classification of such groups for infinite-genus 2-manifolds with no planar ends. Surprisingly, we show there is an uncountable class of such 2-manifolds where every countable group can be realized as an isometry group (namely, those with self-similar end spaces). We apply this result to obtain obstructions to standard group theoretic properties for the groups of homeomorphisms, diffeomorphisms, and the mapping class groups of such 2-manifolds. For example, none of these groups satisfy the Tits Alternative; are coherent; are linear; are cyclically or linearly orderable; or are residually finite. As a second application, we give an algebraic rigidity result for mapping class groups.

The first integral cohomology of pure mapping class groups

It is a classical result of Powell that pure mapping class groups of connected, orientable surfaces of finite type and genus at least three are perfect. In stark contrast, we construct nontrivial homomorphisms from infinite-genus mapping class groups to the integers. Moreover, we compute the first integral cohomology group associated to the pure mapping class group of any connected orientable surface of genus at least 2 in terms of the surface's simplicial homology. In order to do this, we show that pure mapping class groups of infinite-genus surfaces split as a semi-direct product.

Effective virtual and residual properties of some arithmetic hyperbolic 3-manifolds

We give an effective upper bound, for certain arithmetic hyperbolic 3-manifold groups obtained from a quadratic form construction, on the minimal index of a subgroup that embeds in a fixed 6-dimensional right-angled reflection group, stabilizing a totally geodesic subspace. In particular, for manifold groups in any fixed commensurability class we show that the index of such a subgroup is asymptotically smaller than any fractional power of the volume of the manifold. We also give effective bounds on the geodesic residual finiteness growths of closed hyperbolic manifolds that totally geodesically immerse in non-compact right-angled reflection orbifolds, extending work of the third author from the compact case. The first result gives examples to which the second applies, and for these we give explicit bounds on geodesic residual finiteness growth.

Algebraic and topological properties of big mapping class groups

Let $S$ be an orientable, connected surface with infinitely-generated fundamental group. The main theorem states that if the genus of $S$ is finite and at least 4, then the isomorphism type of the pure mapping class group associated to $S$, denoted $\mathrm{PMap}(S)$, detects the homeomorphism type of $S$. As a corollary, every automorphism of $\mathrm{PMap}(S)$ is induced by a homeomorphism, which extends a theorem of Ivanov from the finite-type setting. In the process of proving these results, we show that $\mathrm{PMap}(S)$ is residually finite if and only if $S$ has finite genus, demonstrating that the algebraic structure of $\mathrm{PMap}(S)$ can distinguish finite- and infinite-genus surfaces. As an independent result, we also show that $\mathrm{Map}(S)$ fails to be residually finite for any infinite-type surface $S$. In addition, we give a topological generating set for $\mathrm{PMap}(S)$ equipped with the compact-open topology. In particular, if $S$ has at most one end accumulated by genus, then $\mathrm{PMap}(S)$ is topologically generated by Dehn twists, otherwise the Dehn twists along with handle shifts topologically generate.

Zariski Closures and Subgroup Separability

The main result of this article is a refinement of the well-known subgroup separability results of Hall and Scott for free and surface groups. We show that for any finitely generated subgroup, there is a finite dimensional representation of the free or surface group that separates the subgroup in the induced Zariski topology. As a corollary, we establish a polynomial upper bound on the size of the quotients used to separate a finitely generated subgroup in a free or surface group.

On the Residual Finiteness Growths of Particular Hyperbolic Manifold Groups

We give a quantification of residual finiteness for the fundamental groups of hyperbolic manifolds that admit a totally geodesic immersion to a compact, right-angled Coxeter orbifold of dimension 3 or 4. Specifically, we give explicit upper bounds on residual finiteness that are linear in terms of geodesic length. We then extend the linear upper bounds to hyperbolic manifolds with a finite cover that admits such an immersion. Since the quantifications are given in terms of geodesic length, we define the geodesic residual finiteness growth and show that this growth is equivalent to the usual residual finiteness growth defined in terms of word length. This equivalence implies that our results recover the quantification of residual finiteness from \cite{BHP} for hyperbolic manifolds that virtually immerse into a compact reflection orbifold.

Building hyperbolic metrics suited to closed curves and applications to lifting simply

Let $γ$ be an essential closed curve with at most $k$ self-intersections on a surface $\mathcal{S}$ with negative Euler characteristic. In this paper, we construct a hyperbolic metric $ρ$ for which $γ$ has length at most $M \cdot \sqrt{k}$, where $M$ is a constant depending only on the topology of $\mathcal{S}$. Moreover, the injectivity radius of $ρ$ is at least $1/(2\sqrt{k})$. This yields linear upper bounds in terms of self-intersection number on the minimum degree of a cover to which $γ$ lifts as a simple closed curve (i.e. lifts simply). We also show that if $γ$ is a closed curve with length at most $L$ on a cusped hyperbolic surface $\mathcal{S}$, then there exists a cover of $\mathcal{S}$ of degree at most $N \cdot L \cdot e^{L/2}$ to which $γ$ lifts simply, for $N$ depending only on the topology of $\mathcal{S}$.

Quantifying separability in virtually special groups

We give a new, effective proof of the separability of cubically convex-cocompact subgroups of special groups. As a consequence, we show that if $G$ is a virtually compact special hyperbolic group, and $Q\leq G$ is a $K$-quasiconvex subgroup, then any $g\in G-Q$ of word-length at most $n$ is separated from $Q$ by a subgroup whose index is polynomial in $n$ and exponential in $K$. This generalizes a result of Bou-Rabee and the authors on residual finiteness growth and a result of the second author on surface groups.
