Higher Independence Complexes of graphs and their homotopy types

For $r\geq 1$, the $r$-independence complex of a graph $G$ is a simplicial complex whose faces are subset $I \subseteq V(G)$ such that each component of the induced subgraph $G[I]$ has at most $r$ vertices. In this article, we determine the homotopy type of $r$-independence complexes of certain families of graphs including complete $s$-partite graphs, fully whiskered graphs, cycle graphs and perfect $m$-ary trees. In each case, these complexes are either homotopic to a wedge of equi-dimensional spheres or are contractible. We also give a closed form formula for their homotopy types.

Distance $r$-domination number and $r$-independence complexes of graphs

For $r\geq 1$, the $r$-independence complex of a graph $G$, denoted Ind$_r(G)$, is a simplicial complex whose faces are subsets $A \subseteq V(G)$ such that each component of the induced subgraph $G[A]$ has at most $r$ vertices. In this article, we establish a relation between the distance $r$-domination number of $G$ and (homological) connectivity of Ind$_r(G)$. We also prove that Ind$_r(G)$, for a chordal graph $G$, is either contractible or homotopy equivalent to a wedge of spheres. Given a wedge of spheres, we also provide a construction of a chordal graph whose $r$-independence complex has the homotopy type of the given wedge.

On the topology of bi-cyclopermutohedra

Motivated by the work of Panina and her coauthors on cyclopermutohedron we study a poset whose elements correspond to equivalence classes of partitions of the set $\{1,\cdots, n+1\}$ up to cyclic permutations and orientation reversion. This poset is the face poset of a regular CW complex which we call bi-cyclopermutohedron and denote it by $\mathrm{QP}_{n+1}$. The complex $\mathrm{QP}_{n+1}$ contains subcomplexes homeomorphic to moduli space of certain planar polygons with $n+1$ sides up to isometries. In this article we find an optimal discrete Morse function on $\mathrm{QP}_{n+1}$ and use it to compute its homology with $\mathbb{Z}$ as well as $\mathbb{Z}_2$ coefficients.

The Goresky-MacPherson formula for toric arrangements

A subspace arrangement is a finite collection of affine subspaces in $\mathbb{R}^n$. One of the main problems associated to arrangements asks up to what extent the topological invariants of the union of these spaces, and of their complement are determined by the combinatorics of their intersection. The most important result in this direction is due to Goresky and MacPherson. As an application of their stratified Morse theory they showed that the additive structure of the cohomology of the complement is determined by the underlying combinatorics. In this paper we consider toric arrangements; a finite collection of subtori in $(\mathbb{C}^{\ast})^l$. The aim of this paper is to prove an analogue of the Goresky-MacPherson's theorem in this context. When all the subtori in the arrangement are of codimension-$1$ we give an alternate proof of a theorem due to De Concini and Procesi.

On Arrangements of Pseudohyperplanes

To every realizable oriented matroid there corresponds an arrangement of real hyperplanes. The homeomorphism type of the complexified complement of such an arrangement is completely determined by the oriented matroid. In this paper we study arrangements of pseudohyperplanes; they correspond to non-realizable oriented matroids. These arrangements arise as a consequence of the Folkman-Lawrence topological representation theorem. We propose a generalization of the complexification process in this context. In particular we construct a space naturally associated with these pseudo-arrangements which is homeomorphic to the complexified complement in the realizable case. Further we generalize the classical theorem of Salvetti and show that this space has the homotopy type of a cell complex defined in terms of the oriented matroid.

Coxeter transformation groups and reflection arrangements in smooth manifolds

Artin groups are a natural generalization of braid groups and are well-understood in certain cases. Artin groups are closely related to Coxeter groups. There is a faithful representation of a Coxeter group $W$ as a linear reflection group on a real vector space $V$. The group acts properly and fixes a union of hyperplanes. The $W$-action extends as the covering space action to the complexified complement of these hyperplanes. The fundamental groups of the complement and the orbit space are the pure Artin group and the Artin group respectively. For the Artin groups of finite type Deligne proved that the associated complement is aspherical. Using the Coxeter group data Salvetti gave a construction of a cell complex which is a $W$-equivariant deformation retract of the complement. This construction was independently generalized by Charney and Davis to the Artin groups of infinite type. A lot of algebraic properties of these groups were discovered using combinatorial and topological properties of this cell complex. In this paper we represent a Coxeter group as a subgroup of diffeomorphisms of a smooth manifold. These so-called Coxeter transformation groups fix a union of codimension-$1$ (reflecting) submanifolds and permute the connected components of the complement. Their action naturally extends to the tangent bundle of the ambient manifold and fixes the union of tangent bundles of these reflecting submanifolds. Fundamental group of the tangent bundle complement and that of its quotient serve as the analogue of pure Artin group and Artin group respectively. The main aim of this paper is to prove Salvetti's theorems in this context. We show that the combinatorial data of the Coxeter transformation group can be used to construct a cell complex homotopy equivalent to the tangent bundle complement and that this homotopy equivalence is equivariant.

Deletion-restriction in toric arrangements

Deletion-restriction is a fundamental tool in the theory of hyperplane arrangements. Various important results in this field have been proved using deletion-restriction. In this paper we use deletion-restriction to identify a class of toric arrangements for which the cohomology algebra of the complement is generated in degree $1$. We also show that for these arrangements the complement is formal in the sense of Sullivan.

Arrangements of Spheres and Projective Spaces

We develop the theory of arrangements of spheres. Consider a finite collection of codimension-$1$ subspheres in a positive-dimensional sphere. There are two posets associated with this collection: the poset of faces and the poset of intersections. We also associate a topological space: the complement of the union of tangent bundles of these subspheres in the tangent bundle of the ambient sphere. We call this space the tangent bundle complement. As in the case of hyperplane arrangements the aim of this new notion is to understand the interaction between the combinatorics of the intersections and the topology of the tangent bundle complement. In the present paper we find a closed form formula for the homotopy type of the complement and express some of its topological invariants in terms of the associated combinatorial information.

Face enumeration for line arrangements in a $2$-torus

A toric arrangement is a finite collection of codimension-$1$ subtori in a torus. These subtori stratify the ambient torus into faces of various dimensions. Let $f_i$ denote the number of $i$-dimensional faces; these so-called face numbers satisfy the Euler relation $\sum_i (-1)^i f_i = 0$. However not all tuples of natural numbers satisfying this relation arise as face numbers of some toric arrangement. In this paper we focus on toric arrangements in a $2$-dimensional torus and obtain a characterization of face numbers. In particular we show that the convex hull of these face numbers is a cone. Finally we extend some of these results to arrangements of geodesics in surfaces of higher genus.

On a Generalization of Zaslavsky's Theorem for Hyperplane Arrangements

We define arrangements of codimension-1 submanifolds in a smooth manifold which generalize arrangements of hyperplanes. When these submanifolds are removed the manifold breaks up into regions, each of which is homeomorphic to an open disc. The aim of this paper is to derive formulas that count the number of regions formed by such an arrangement. We achieve this aim by generalizing Zaslavsky's theorem to this setting. We show that this number is determined by the combinatorics of the intersections of these submanifolds.

Arrangements of Submanifolds and the Tangent Bundle Complement

Drawing parallels with hyperplane arrangements, we develop the theory of arrangements of submanifolds. Given a smooth, finite dimensional, real manifold $X$ we consider a finite collection $\mathcal{A}$ of locally flat, codimension-1 submanifolds that intersect like hyperplanes. To such a collection we associate two combinatorial objects: the face category and the intersection poset. We also associate a topological space to the arrangement called the tangent bundle complement. It is the complement of union of tangent bundles of these submanifolds inside the tangent bundle of the ambient manifold. Our aim is to investigate the relationship between the combinatorics of the arrangement and the topology of the complement. In particular we show that the tangent bundle complement has the homotopy type of a finite cell complex. We generalize the classical theorem of Salvetti for hyperplane arrangements and show that this particular cell complex is completely determined by the face category.
