Embeddings of variable Sobolev, Besov, and Triebel-Lizorkin spaces on metric measure spaces

Sobolev-type embeddings on metric measure spaces encode a subtle interaction between the analytic regularity of functions and the geometry of the underlying domain space. In this paper we develop an embedding theory for variable Hajłasz-type smoothness spaces on metric measure spaces whose ``dimension'' is allowed to vary pointwise through a bounded exponent $Q(\cdot)$ that governs a lower Ahlfors growth condition on the measure. We introduce variable exponent Hajłasz-Sobolev spaces $M^{s(\cdot),p(\cdot)}$, Hajłasz-Triebel-Lizorkin spaces $M^{s(\cdot)}_{p(\cdot),q(\cdot)}$, and Hajłasz-Besov spaces $N^{s(\cdot)}_{p(\cdot),q(\cdot)}$, and establish Sobolev, Morrey, and Moser-Trudinger type embeddings into variable exponent Lebesgue and Hölder spaces. These embeddings are proved both locally (on balls) under a lower Ahlfors $Q(\cdot)$-regularity condition on the measure and regularity assumptions on the exponents (notably log-Hölder continuity), and globally under additional geometric hypotheses such as geometric doubling and mild uniform bounds on the measure of unit balls. We also identify geometric conditions that are not only sufficient but, in appropriate forms, necessary for the validity of these embeddings, showing in particular that such inequalities force a lower growth bound on the measure of order $r^{Q(x)}$.

Optimal Embeddings of Campanato and Morrey Spaces

We investigate Campanato and Morrey spaces on metric-measure spaces and establish their relationships with Hölder spaces. In particular, we show that the embedding of a Campanato space into a Hölder space is equivalent to the existence of a lower bound for the underlying measure. Several examples are provided to illustrate the results.

Chessboard and level sets of continuous functions

We provide the following result and its discrete equivalent: Let $f \colon I^n \to \mathbb{R}^{n-1}$ be a continuous function. Then, there exist a point $p \in \mathbb{R}^{n-1}$ and a compact subset $S \subset f^{-1}\left[\left\{p\right\}\right]$ which connects some opposite faces of the $n$-dimensional unit cube $I^n$. We give an example that shows it cannot be generalized to path-connected sets. Additionally, we show that a version of the Steinhaus Chessboard Theorem and the Brouwer Fixed Point Theorem are simple consequences of this result.

New Characterizations of First Order Sobolev Spaces

We provide new characterizations of Sobolev spaces that are true under some mild conditions. We study modified first order Sobolev spaces on metric measure spaces: $\mathrm{TC}$-Newtonian space, $\hat{\mathrm{TC}}$-Newtonian space, and Gigli-like space. We prove that if the measure is Borel regular and $σ$-finite, then the modified $\mathrm{TC}$-Newtonian space is equivalent to the Hajłasz-Sobolev space. Moreover, if additionally the measure is doubling then all modified spaces are equivalent to the Hajłasz-Sobolev space.

Compact embeddings of Sobolev, Besov, and Triebel-Lizorkin spaces

We establish necessary and sufficient conditions guaranteeing compactness of embeddings of fractional Sobolev spaces, Besov spaces, and Triebel-Lizorkin spaces, in the general context of quasi-metric-measure spaces. Although stated in the setting of quasi-metric spaces, the main results in this article are new, even in the metric setting. Moreover, by considering the more general category of quasi-metric spaces we are able to obtain these characterizations for optimal ranges of exponents that depend (quantitatively) on the geometric makeup of the underlying space.

Maximal operator in Musielak--Orlicz--Sobolev spaces

We study the Hardy-Littlewood maximal operator in the Musielak-Orlicz-Sobolev space $W^{1,φ}(\mathbb{R}^n)$. Under some natural assumptions on $φ$ we show that the maximal function is bounded and continuous in $W^{1,φ}(\mathbb{R}^n)$.

Maximal operator in Hölder spaces

We study the maximal operator on the variable exponent Hölder spaces in the setting of metric measure spaces. The boundedness is proven for metric measure spaces satisfying an annular decay property. Let us stress that there are no assumptions on the regularity of the variable exponent and the variable exponent can touch values $0$ and $1$. Furthermore, the continuity of the maximal operator between Hölder spaces is investigated. Those results are new even in the Euclidean setting.

The time fractional Schrödinger equation on Hilbert space

We study the linear fractional Schrödinger equation on a Hilbert space, with a fractional time derivative of order $0<α<1,$ and a self-adjoint generator $A.$ Using the spectral theorem we prove existence and uniqueness of strong solutions, and we show that the solutions are governed by an operator solution family $\{U_α(t)\}_{t\geq 0}$. Moreover, we prove that the solution family $U_α(t)$ converges strongly to the family of unitary operators $e^{-itA},$ as $α$ approaches to $1$.

Harmonic functions on metric measure spaces

We introduce and study strongly and weakly harmonic functions on metric measure spaces defined via the mean value property holding for all and, respectively, for some radii of balls at every point of the underlying domain. Among properties of such functions we investigate various types of Harnack estimates on balls and compact sets, weak and strong maximum principles, comparison principles, the Hölder and the Lipshitz estimates and some differentiability properties. The latter one is based on the notion of a weak upper gradient. The Dirichlet problem for functions satisfying the mean value property is studied via the dynamical programming method related to stochastic games. We employ the Perron method to construct a harmonic function with continuous boundary data. Finally, we discuss and prove the Liouville type theorems. Our results are obtained for various types of measures: continuous with respect to a metric, doubling, uniform, measures satisfying the annular decay condition. Relations between such measures are presented as well. The presentation is illustrated by examples.

Multipole matrix elements of Green function of Laplace equation

Multipole matrix elements of Green function of Laplace equation are calculated. The multipole matrix elements of Green function in electrostatics describe potential on a sphere which is produced by a charge distributed on the surface of a different (possibly overlapping) sphere of the same radius. The matrix elements are defined by double convolution of two spherical harmonics with the Green function of Laplace equation. The method we use relies on the fact that in the Fourier space the double convolution has simple form. Therefore we calculate the multipole matrix from its Fourier transform. An important part of our considerations is simplification of the three dimensional Fourier transformation of general multipole matrix by its rotational symmetry to the one-dimensional Hankel transformation.

Schauder theory in variable Hölder spaces

We study elliptic equations on bounded domain of Euclidean spaces in the variable Hölder spaces. Interior a priori Schauder estimates are given as well as global ones. Moreover, the existence and the uniqueness of solutions to the Dirichlet boundary value problem is proved.

Sobolev spaces on locally compact abelian groups

Motivated by a class of nonlinear equations of interest for string theory, we introduce Sobolev spaces on arbitrary locally compact abelian groups and we examine some of their properties. Specifically, we focus on analogs of the Sobolev embedding and Rellich- Kondrachov compactness theorems. As an application, we prove the existence of continuous solutions to a generalized euclidean bosonic string equation possed on an arbitrary compact abelian group.
