Pressure-Induced Large Volume Collapse, Plane-to-Chain, Insulator to Metal Transition in CaMn$_2$Bi$_2$

In-situ high pressure single crystal X-ray diffraction study reveals that the quantum material CaMn$_2$Bi$_2$ undergoes a unique plane to chain structural transition between 2 and 3 GPa, accompanied by a large volume collapse. CaMn2Bi2 displays a new structure type above 2.3 GPa, with the puckered Mn honeycomb lattice of the trigonal ambient-pressure structure converting to one-dimensional (1D) zigzag chains in the high-pressure monoclinic structure. Single crystal measurements reveal that the pressure-induced structural transformation is accompanied by a dramatic two order of magnitude drop of resistivity; although the ambient pressure phase displays semiconducting behavior at low temperatures, metallic temperature dependent resistivity is observed for the high pressure phase, as, surprisingly, are two resistivity anomalies with opposite pressure dependences. Based on the electronic structure calculations, we hypothesized that the newly emerged electronic state under high pressure is associated with a Fermi surface instability of the quasi-1D Mn chains, while we infer that the other is a magnetic transition. Assessment of the total energies for hypothetical magnetic structures for high pressure CaMn$_2$Bi$_2$ indicates that ferrimagnetism is thermodynamically favored.

Simultaneous band gap narrowing and carrier lifetime prolongation of organic-inorganic trihalide perovskites

The organic-inorganic hybrid lead trihalide perovskites have been emerging as the most attractive photovoltaic material. As regulated by Shockley-Queisser theory, a formidable materials science challenge for the next level improvement requires further band gap narrowing for broader absorption in solar spectrum, while retaining or even synergistically prolonging the carrier lifetime, a critical factor responsible for attaining the near-band gap photovoltage. Herein, by applying controllable hydrostatic pressure we have achieved unprecedented simultaneous enhancement in both band gap narrowing and carrier lifetime prolongation (up to 70~100% increase) under mild pressures at ~0.3 GPa. The pressure-induced modulation on pure hybrid perovskites without introducing any adverse chemical or thermal effect clearly demonstrates the importance of band edges on the photon-electron interaction and maps a pioneering route towards a further boost in their photovoltaic performance.

Brillouin scattering and molecular dynamics study of the elastic properties of Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3

We report the complete set of elastic constants and the bulk modulus for single crystal Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3 (PMN) at room temperature obtained from Brillouin spectroscopy and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The bulk modulus from Brillouin is found to be 103 GPa, in a good agreement with earlier x-ray studies. We also derived the refractive index along all principal axes and found PMN to be optically isotropic, with a refractive index of 2.52 +/- 0.02. PMN shows mechanical anisotropy with A=1.7. The MD simulations of PMN using the random site model overestimate the elastic constants by 20-50 GPa and the bulk modulus is 148 GPa, but the mechanical anisotropy matches the Brillouin results of A = 1.7. We also determined the elastic constants for various models of PMN and we find variation in the elastic constants based on chemical ordering.
