Boundary contributions to the hypervirial theorem

It is shown that under certain boundary conditions the virial theorem has to be modified. We analyze the origin of the extra term and compute it in particular examples. The Coulomb and harmonic oscillator with point interaction have been studied in the light of this generalization of the virial theorem.

A Family of Non-commutative geometries

It is shown that the non-commutativity in quantum Hall system may get modified. The self-adjoint extension of the corresponding Hamiltonian leads to a family of non-commutative geometries labeled by the self-adjoint extension parameters. We explicitly perform an exact calculation using a singular interaction and show that, when projected to a certain Landau level, the emergent non-commutative geometries of the projected coordinates belong to a one parameter family. There is a possibility of obtaining the filling fraction of fractional quantum Hall effect by suitably choosing the value of the self-adjoint extension parameter.

Physical realization for Riemann zeros from black hole physics

According to a conjecture attributed to Polya and Hilbert, there is a self-adjoint operator whose eigenvalues are the the nontrivial zeros of the Riemann zeta function. We show that the near-horizon dynamics of a massive scalar field in the Schwarzscild black hole spacetime, under a reasonable boundary condition, gives rise to normal mode frequencies that coincide with the nontrivial Riemann zeros. In achieving this result, we exploit the Bekenstein conjecture of black hole area quantization, and argue that it is responsible for the breaking of the continuous scale symmetry of the near horizon dynamics into a discrete one.

Scalar field dynamics in warped AdS_3 black hole background

We study the normal modes of a scalar field in the background of a warped AdS_3 black hole which arises in topologically massive gravity. We discuss the normal mode spectrum using the brick wall boundary condition. In addition, we investigate the possibility of a more general boundary condition for the scalar field.

Observations on spacetime symmetry and non-commutativity

We consider both the co-ordinates and momenta to be non-commutative and define a non-commutative version of Lorentz symmetry which has a smooth limit to the standard Lorentz symmetry. The Poincar\acute{e} algebra in this spacetime has also been discussed.

Non-commutativity as a measure of inequivalent quantization

We show that the strength of non-commutativity could play a role in determining the boundary condition of a physical problem. As a toy model we consider the inverse square problem in non-commutative space. The scale invariance of the system is known to be explicitly broken by the scale of non-commutativity Θ. The resulting problem in non-commutative space is analyzed. It is shown that despite the presence of higher singular potential coming from the leading term of the expansion of the potential to first order in Θ, it can have a self-adjoint extensions. The boundary conditions are obtained, belong to a 1-parameter family and related to the strength of non-commutativity.

Non-hermitian models in higher dimensions

It is know that PT-symmetric models have real spectra provided the symmetry is not spontaneously broken. Even pseudo-hermitian models have real spectra, which enlarge the the class of non-hermitian models possessing real spectra. We however consider non-hermitian models in higher dimensions which are not necessarily explicit PT-symmetric nor pseudo-hermitian. We show that the models may generate real spectra depending upon the coupling constants of the Hamiltonian. Our models thus further generalize the class of non-hermitian systems, which possess real spectra.

Hydrino like states in graphene and Aharonov-Bohm field

We study the dynamics of fermions on graphene in presence of Coulomb impurities and Aharonov-Bohm field. Special emphasis is given to the formation of hydrino like states and its lifting of degeneracy due to the presence of AB field. The flux of the AB field can be tuned to make the low angular momentum hydrino states stable against decay. The zero limit physics of the two coupling constants α_G and Φinvolved in the system is discussed.

Normal mode analysis for scalar fields in BTZ black hole background

We analyze the possibility of inequivalent boundary conditions for a scalar field propagating in the BTZ black hole space-time. We find that for certain ranges of the black hole parameters, the Klein-Gordon operator admits a one-parameter family of self-adjoint extensions. For this range, the BTZ space-time is not quantum mechanically complete. We suggest a physically motivated method for determining the spectra of the Klein-Gordon operator.

Non-Hermitian quantum mechanics in non-commutative space

We study non Hermitian quantum systems in noncommutative space as well as a \cal{PT}-symmetric deformation of this space. Specifically, a \mathcal{PT}-symmetric harmonic oscillator together with iC(x_1+x_2) interaction is discussed in this space and solutions are obtained. It is shown that in the \cal{PT} deformed noncommutative space the Hamiltonian may or may not possess real eigenvalues depending on the choice of the noncommutative parameters. However, it is shown that in standard noncommutative space, the iC(x_1+x_2) interaction generates only real eigenvalues despite the fact that the Hamiltonian is not \mathcal{PT}-symmetric. A complex interacting anisotropic oscillator system has also been discussed.

Conformal anomaly in non-hermitian quantum mechanics

A model of an electron and a Dirac monopole interacting through an axially symmetric non-hermitian but \mathcal{PT}-symmetric potential is discussed in detail. The intriguing localization of the wave-packet as a result of the anomalous breaking of the scale symmetry is shown to provide a scale for the system. The symmetry algebra for the system, which is the conformal algebra SO(2,1), is discussed and is shown to belong to the enveloping algebra of the combined algebra, composed of the Virosoro algebra, \{L_n, n\in \mathbb{N}\} and an abelian algebra, \{P_n,n\in \mathbb{N}\}.

Inverse square problem and so(2,1) symmetry in noncommutative space

We study the quantum mechanics of a system with inverse square potential in noncommutative space. Both the coordinates and momentums are considered to be noncommutative, which breaks the original so(2,1) symmetry. The energy levels and eigenfunctions are obtained. The generators of the so(2,1) algebra are also studied in noncommutative phase space and the commutators are calculated, which shows that the so(2,1) algebra obtained in noncommutative space is not closed. However the commutative limit Θ,\barΘ\to 0 for the algebra smoothly goes to the standard so(2,1) algebra.

Noncommutative oscillator, symmetry and Landau problem

Isotropic oscillator on a plane is discussed where both the coordinate and momentum space are considered to be noncommutative. We also discuss the symmetry properties of the oscillator for three separate cases when both the noncommutative parameters Θand \barΘ satisfy specific relations. We compare the Landau problem with the isotropic oscillator on noncommutative space and obtain a relation between the two noncommutative parameters with the magnetic field of the Landau problem.

Localization at threshold in noncommutative space

The ground state energy of a scale symmetric system usually does not possess any lower bound, thus making the system quantum mechanically unstable. Self-adjointness and renormalization techniques usually provide the system a scale and thus making the ground state bounded from below. We on the other hand use noncommutative quantum mechanics and exploit the noncommutative parameter Θas a scale for a scale symmetric system. The resulting Hamiltonian for the system then allows an unusual bound state at the threshold of the energy, E=0. Apart from the Hamiltonian \hat{H} we also compute the other two generators of the so(2,1) algebra, the dilation \hat{D} and the conformal generator \hat{K} in the noncommutative space. The so(2,1) algebra is not closed in the noncommutative space, but the limit Θ\to 0 smoothly goes to the so(2,1) algebra restoring the conformal symmetry. We also discuss the system for large noncommutative parameter.

Lower bound of minimal time evolution in quantum mechanics

We show that the total time of evolution from the initial quantum state to final quantum state and then back to the initial state, i.e., making a round trip along the great circle over S^2, must have a lower bound in quantum mechanics, if the difference between two eigenstates of the 2\times 2 Hamiltonian is kept fixed. Even the non-hermitian quantum mechanics can not reduce it to arbitrarily small value. In fact, we show that whether one uses a hermitian Hamiltonian or a non-hermitian, the required minimal total time of evolution is same. It is argued that in hermitian quantum mechanics the condition for minimal time evolution can be understood as a constraint coming from the orthogonality of the polarization vector \bf P of the evolving quantum state ρ={1/2}(\bf 1+ \bf{P}\cdot\boldsymbolσ) with the vector \boldsymbol{\mathcal O}(Θ) of the 2\times 2 hermitian Hamiltonians H ={1/2}({\mathcal O}_0\boldsymbol{1}+ \boldsymbol{\mathcal O}(Θ)\cdot\boldsymbolσ) and it is shown that the Hamiltonian H can be parameterized by two independent parameters {\mathcal O}_0 and Θ.

Dirac spinors in solenoidal field and self adjoint extensions of its Hamiltonian

We discuss Dirac equation (DE) and its solution in presence of solenoid (infinitely long) field in (3+1) dimensions. Starting with a very restricted domain for the Hamiltonian, we show that a 1-parameter family of self adjoint extensions (SAE) are necessary to make sure the correct evolution of the Dirac spinors. Within the extended domain bound state (BS) and scattering state (SS) solutions are obtained. We argue that the existence of bound state in such system is basically due the breaking of classical scaling symmetry by the quantization procedure. A remarkable effect of the scaling anomaly is that it puts an open bound on both sides of the Dirac sea, i.e., E\in(-M,M) for ν^2[0,1)! We also study the issue of relationship between scattering state and bound state in the region ν^2 \in[0,1) and recovered the bound state solution and eigenvalue from the scattering state solution.

Quantization of exciton in magnetic field background

The possible mismatch between the theoretical and experimental absorption of the edge peaks in semiconductors in a magnetic field background may arise due to the approximation scheme used to analytically calculate the absorption coefficient. As a possible remedy we suggest to consider nontrivial boundary conditions on x-y plane by in-equivalently quantizing the exciton in background magnetic field. This inequivalent quantization is based on von Neumann's method of self-adjoint extension, which is characterized by a parameter Σ. We obtain bound state solution and scattering state solution, which in general depend upon the self-adjoint extension parameter Σ. The parameter Σcan be used to fine tune the optical absorption coefficient K(Σ) to match with the experiment.

Atom capture by nanotube and scaling anomaly

The existence of bound state of the polarizable neutral atom in the inverse square potential created by the electric field of single walled charged carbon nanotube (SWNT) is shown to be theoretically possible. The consideration of inequivalent boundary conditions due to self-adjoint extensions lead to this nontrivial bound state solution. It is also shown that the scaling anomaly is responsible for the existence of bound state. Binding of the polarizable atoms in the coupling constant interval η^2\in[0,1) may be responsible for the smearing of the edge of steps in quantized conductance, which has not been considered so far in literature.
