Interacting Galilean and Finite-Energy Carroll Fermions

We present a unified derivation of the Galilean and Carrollian limits of the massive Dirac action based on a similarity transformation depending on the mass and the speed of light. The two choices of Dirac conjugation, combined with different mass scalings, generate distinct families of limiting actions. This construction recovers known Galilei and Carroll fermion models and yields new systems, one in each regime. We classify a sufficient set of boost-compatible local (self-)interactions, which includes Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL). The new Galilean free action possesses a local fermionic gauge symmetry that eliminates its local field content. A selected quartic interaction, preserving the Bargmann boost, explicitly breaks the original fermionic gauge symmetry so that the argument that eliminates the field content no longer applies. The NJL limit interaction merely deforms the realization of that gauge symmetry. We show that the energy parameter in several Carroll actions can be eliminated by a time-dependent phase redefinition; conversely, in the new Carrollian extension the energy cannot be removed.

On $\sqrt{T\overline{T}}$ deformed pathways: CFT to CCFT

We discuss the marginal $\sqrt{T\overline{T}}$ deformation of massless scalar field theories in two dimensions from a dynamical perspective. The operator flow equations for such deformations induce a particular Legendre Transformation between flowed Lagrangians and flowed Hamiltonians. The marginal deformation does not change the conformal symmetries of the theory, until some special points in the moduli space are reached, and the relativistic conformal algebra smoothly changes to the Carrollian conformal (equivalently BMS) one. We investigate this change of symmetry from both configuration space and phase space point of view, while keeping the notion of Legendre Transformation unchanged during the flow. By expanding the actions, in the extreme limits of the flow parameter, we recover the usual ``Electric'' Carroll theory and further uncover a novel ``Magnetic'' counterpart. We discuss the intriguing geometric understanding of such dynamical maps for the deformed theories, and also provide a concrete example for the same from a deformed string theory in flat space.

BMS$_{3}$ (Carrollian) field theories from a bound in the coupling of current-current deformations of CFT$_{2}$

Two types of Carrollian field theories are shown to emerge from finite current-current deformations of toroidal CFT$_{2}$'s when the deformation coupling is precisely fixed, up to a sign. In both cases the energy and momentum densities fulfill the BMS$_{3}$ algebra. Applying these results to the bosonic string, one finds that the electric-like deformation (positive coupling) reduces to the standard tensionless string. The magnetic-like deformation (negative coupling) yields to a new theory, still being relativistic, devoid of tension and endowed with an "inner Carrollian structure". Classical solutions describe a sort of "self-interacting null particle" moving along generic null curves of the original background metric, not necessarily geodesics. This magnetic-like theory is also shown to be recovered from inequivalent limits in the tension of the bosonic string. Electric- and magnetic-like deformations of toroidal CFT$_{2}$'s can be seen to correspond to limiting cases of continuous exactly marginal (trivial) deformations spanned by an SO(1,1) automorphism of the current algebra. Thus, the absolute value of the current-current deformation coupling is shown to be bounded. When the bound saturates, the deformation ceases to be exactly marginal, but still retains the full conformal symmetry in two alternative ultrarelativistic regimes.

Exotic Origins of Tensionless Superstrings

A new type of tensionless superstring theory, called the Inhomogeneous tensionless superstring, has been recently introduced. This is characterised by a residual symmetry algebra on the worldsheet richer in structure than the previously known symmetry algebra related to Homogeneous tensionless superstring. In this paper, we investigate theories of tensile superstring that the Inhomogeneous tensionless superstring with manifestly real fermions could arise from. We provide two different candidates for these parent tensile theories. The nature of the limit dictates that these theories have some exotic features.

A Tale of Three. Tensionless strings and vacuum structure

Within the premise of canonical quantisation, we re-examine the quantum structure of bosonic tensionless string theory. In the classical theory, the worldsheet metric degenerates and the Bondi-Metnzer-Sachs (BMS) algebra arises as the residual symmetries on fixing the tensionless equivalent of the conformal gauge. In the quantum regime, we find, on careful examination, that there are multiple ways to impose constraints to restrict the physical Hilbert space, which in turn lead to three distinct choices of tensionless vacua. We analyse these vacua in detail, commenting on various aspects like the central charges and the spectrum around each of them.

Local quantum energy conditions in non-Lorentz-invariant quantum field theories

We provide the first example of local quantum energy conditions in quantum field theories that are not Lorentz invariant. We focus on field theories in two dimensions with infinite-dimensional symmetries, like the ones governed by the Bondi-van der Burg-Metzner-Sachs group that appear in the context of flat space holography. Reminiscent of holographic results on the quantum null energy condition, we prove that our new energy conditions saturate for states in the field theory that are dual to vacuum solutions of three-dimensional Einstein gravity with vanishing cosmological constant.

The tensionless path from closed to open strings

We reconsider the tensionless limit on bosonic closed string theory, where the 3d Bondi-Metzner-Sachs (BMS) algebra appears as symmetries on the worldsheet, as opposed to two copies of the Virasoro algebra in the case of the usual tensile theory. This is an ultra-relativistic limit on the worldsheet. We consider the induced representations of the BMS algebra in the oscillator basis and show that the limit takes the tensile closed string vacuum to the "induced" vacuum which is identified as a Neumann boundary state. Hence, rather remarkably, an open string emerges from closed strings in the tensionless limit. We also follow the perturbative states in the tensile theory in the limit and show that there is a Bose-Einstein like condensation of all perturbative states on this induced vacuum. This ties up nicely with the picture of the formation of a long string from a gas of strings in the Hagedorn temperature, where the effective string tension goes to zero.

Flatspace Chiral Supergravity

We propose a holographic duality between a 2 dimensional (2d) chiral superconformal field theory and a certain theory of supergravity in 3d with flatspace boundary conditions that is obtained as a double scaling limit of a parity breaking theory of supergravity. We show how the asymptotic symmetries of the bulk theory reduce from the "despotic" Super Bondi-Metzner-Sachs algebra (or equivalently the Inhomogeneous Super Galilean Conformal Algebra) to a single copy of the Super-Virasoro algebra in this limit and also reproduce the same reduction from a study of null vectors in the putative 2d dual field theory.

Inhomogeneous Tensionless Superstrings

We construct a novel tensionless limit of Superstring theory that realises the Inhomogeneous Super Galilean Conformal Algebra (SGCA$_I$) as the residual symmetries in the analogue of the conformal gauge, as opposed to previous constructions of the tensionless superstring, where a smaller symmetry algebra called the Homogeneous SGCA emerged as the residual gauge symmetry on the worldsheet. We obtain various features of the new tensionless theory intrinsically as well as from a systematic limit of the corresponding features of the tensile theory. We discuss why it is desirable and also natural to work with this new tensionless limit and the larger algebra.

Tensionless Superstrings: View from the Worldsheet

In this brief note, we show that the residual symmetries that arise in the analysis of the tensionless superstrings in the equivalent of the conformal gauge is (a trivial extension of) the recently discovered 3d Super Bondi-Metzner-Sachs algebra, discussed in the context of asymptotic symmetries of 3d Supergravity in flat-spacetimes. This helps us uncover a limiting approach to the construction of the tensionless superstring from the point of view of the worldsheet, analogous to the one we had adopted earlier for the closed tensionless bosonic string.

A Schrödinger approach to Newton-Cartan and Hořava-Lifshitz gravities

We define a `non-relativistic conformal method', based on a Schrödinger algebra with critical exponent z = 2, as the non-relativistic version of the relativistic conformal method. An important ingredient of this method is the occurrence of a complex compensating scalar field that transforms under both scale and central charge transformations. We apply this non-relativistic method to derive the curved space Newton-Cartan gravity equations of motion with twistless torsion. Moreover, we reproduce z = 2 Hořava-Lifshitz gravity by classifying all possible Schrödinger invariant scalar field theories of a complex scalar up to second order in time derivatives.

Tensionless Strings from Worldsheet Symmetries

We revisit the construction of the tensionless limit of closed bosonic string theory in the covariant formulation in the light of Galilean conformal symmetry that rises as the residual gauge symmetry on the tensionless worldsheet. We relate the analysis of the fundamentally tensionless theory to the tensionless limit that is viewed as a contraction of worldsheet coordinates. Analysis of the quantum regime uncovers interesting physics. The degrees of freedom that appear in the tensionless string are fundamentally different from the usual string states. Through a Bogoliubov transformation on the worldsheet, we link the tensionless vacuum to the usual tensile vacuum. As an application, we show that our analysis can be used to understand physics of strings at very high temperatures and propose that these new degrees of freedom are naturally connected with the long-string picture of the Hagedorn phase of free string theory. We also show that tensionless closed strings behave like open strings.
