Dynamics of Marangoni-Driven Elliptical Janus Particles

We investigate the spontaneous motion of an elliptical Janus particle, driven by Marangoni forces, on a water surface to understand how particle shape and size influence its dynamics. The Janus particle is one-half infused with a substance such as camphor, which lowers the surface tension upon release onto the water surface. The resulting surface tension gradient generates Marangoni forces that propel the particle. For fully camphor-infused (non-Janus) particles, previous studies have shown that motion occurs along the short axis of the ellipse. However, for Janus particles, our experiments reveal a much richer steady-state dynamics, depending on both the particle's eccentricity and size. To understand these dynamics, we develop a numerical model that captures the connection between the spatio-temporal evolution of the camphor concentration field and the Marangoni force driving the particle. Using this model, we simulate the motion of particles with varying eccentricities - from nearly circular to highly elongated shapes. The simulations qualitatively reproduce all the trajectories observed in experiments and provide insights into how particle geometry influences the dynamics of chemically driven anisotropic particles. With the help of the numerical model, we compute a full phase diagram characterising the dynamical states as a function of surfactant properties.

Predictive modelling of disease propagation in a mobile, connected community

We present numerical results obtained from the modelling of a stochastic, highly connected and mobile community. The spread of attributes like health, disease among the community members is simulated using cellular automata on a planar 2 dimensional bounded space. With remarkably few assumptions, we are able to predict the future course of propagation of such disease as a function of time and the fine-tuning of parameters related to the interaction among the automata.

Coexisting synchronous and asynchronous states in locally coupled array of oscillators by partial self-feedback control

We report the emergence of coexisting synchronous and asynchronous subpopulations of oscillators in one dimensional arrays of identical oscillators by applying a self-feedback control. When a self-feedback is applied to a subpopulation of the array, similar to chimera states, it splits into two/more sub-subpopulations coexisting in coherent and incoherent states for a range of self-feedback strength. By tuning the coupling between the nearest neighbors and the amount of self-feedback in the perturbed subpopulation, the size of the coherent and the incoherent sub-subpopulations in the array can be controlled, although the exact size of them is unpredictable. We present numerical evidence using the Landau-Stuart (LS) system and the Kuramoto-Sakaguchi (KS) phase model.

Noise invoked resonances near a homoclinic bifurcation in the glow discharge plasma

Stochastic Resonance (SR) and Coherence Resonance (CR) have been studied experimentally in the discharge plasma close to a homoclinic bifurcation. For the SR phenomena, it is observed that a superimposed subthreshold periodic signal can be recovered via stochastic modulations of the discharge voltage. Furthermore, it is realized that even in the absence of a subthreshold deterministic signal, the system dynamics can be recovered and optimized using noise. This effect is defined as CR in the literature. In the present experiments, induction of SR and CR are quantified using the Absolute Mean Difference (AMD) and Normalized Variance (NV) techniques respectively. AMD is a new statistical tool to quantify regularity in the stochastic resonance and is independent of lag.
