A complex-analytic characterization of Lagrangian immersions in $\mathbb C^n$ with transverse double points

Given a compact smooth totally real immersed $n$-submanifold $M\subset\mathbb C^n$ with only finitely many transverse double points, it is known that if $M$ is Lagrangian with respect to some K{\"a}hler form on $\mathbb C^n$, then it is rationally convex in $\mathbb C^n$ (Gayet, 2000), but the converse is not true (Mitrea, 2020). We show that $M$ is Lagrangian with respect to some K{\"a}hler form on $\mathbb C^n$ if and only if $M$ is rationally convex {\em and} at each double point, the pair of transverse tangent planes to $M$ satisfies the following diagonalizability condition: there is a complex linear transformation on $\mathbb C^n$ that maps the pair to $\left(\mathbb R^n,(D+i)\mathbb R^n\right)$ for some real diagonal $n\times n$ matrix $D$.

Polynomially convex embeddings and CR singularities of real manifolds

It is proved that any smooth manifold $\mathcal M$ of dimension $m$ admits a smooth polynomially convex embedding into $\mathbb C^n$ when $n\geq \lfloor 5m/4\rfloor$. Further, such embeddings are dense in the space of smooth maps from $\mathcal M$ into $\mathbb C^n$ in the $\mathcal C^3$-topology. The components of any such embedding give smooth generators of the algebra of complex-valued continuous functions on $\mathcal M$. A key ingredient of the proof is a coordinate-free description of certain notions of (non)degeneracy, as defined by Webster and Coffman, for CR-singularities of order one of an embedded real manifold in $\mathbb C^n$. The main result is obtained by inductively perturbing each stratum of degeneracy to produce a global polynomially convex embedding.

A (Hilbert) geometric algorithm for approximating the halfspace depth of a point in a convex body

Halfspace (or Tukey) depth is a fundamental and robust measure of centrality of data points in multivariate datasets. Computing the depth of a point with respect to the uniform distribution on an open convex body in $\mathbb{R}^d$ is a natural algorithmic problem. While the coarser task of testing membership in convex bodies has been extensively studied, the refined problem of evaluating depth has received comparatively little attention in the literature. In this work, we present an algorithm for approximating the halfspace depth of a point in an open convex body $K \subset \mathbb{R}^d.$ To the best of our knowledge, this is the first deterministic algorithm for this problem. As part of our approach, we design an algorithm for answering approximate membership queries for the depth-trimmed regions of $K$ (i.e., the superlevel sets of the depth function). Our data structure is inspired by recent work of Abdelkader and Mount [SOSA 2024], wherein approximate membership queries for $K$ are answered using geometric structures derived from the Hilbert metric on $K.$ A key component underlying our data structure is a novel quantitative comparison between the depth-trimmed regions and the Hilbert metric balls of $K$. Lastly, to highlight the computational expense of the problem, we present an algorithm for determining the exact depth of a point in an open planar convex polygon presented as the intersection of finitely many halfplanes.

Hypersurface Convexity and Extension of K\"ahler Forms

The following generalization of a result of S. Nemirovski is proved: if $X$ is either a projective or a Stein manifold and $K\subset X$ is a compact sublevel set of a strictly plurisubharmonic function $\varphi$ defined in a neighborhood of $K$, then $X\setminus K$ is a union of positive divisors if and only if $dd^c\varphi$ extends to a Hodge form on $X$. For an arbitrary compact subset $K\subsetneq X$, this gives that $X\setminus K$ is a union of positive divisors if and only if $K$ admits a neighbourhood basis of sublevel sets of strictly plurisubharmonic functions with the $dd^c$-extension property.

On the dimension of bundle-valued Bergman spaces on compact Riemann surfaces

Given a holomorphic vector bundle $E$ over a compact Riemann surface $M$, and an open set $D$ in $M$, we prove that the Bergman space of holomorphic sections of the restriction of $E$ to $D$ must either coincide with the space of global holomorphic sections of $E$, or be infinite dimensional. Moreover, we characterize the latter entirely in terms of potential-theoretic properties of $D$.

Volume Approximation of Strongly ${\mathbb C}$-Convex Domains by Random Polyhedra

Polyhedral-type approximations of convex-like domains in $\mathbb{C}^d$ have been considered recently by the second author. In particular, the decay rate of the error in optimal volume approximation as a function of the number of facets has been obtained. In this article, we take these studies further by investigating polyhedra constructed using random points (Poisson or binomial process) on the boundary of a strongly $\mathbb{C}$-convex domain. We determine the rate of error in volume approximation of the domain by random polyhedra, and conjecture the precise value of the minimal limiting constant. Analogous to the real case, the exponent appearing in the error rate of random volume approximation coincides with that of optimal volume approximation, and can be interpreted in terms of the Hausdorff dimension of a naturally-occurring metric space. Moreover, the limiting constant is conjectured to depend on the M\"obius-Fefferman measure, which is a complex analogue of the Blaschke surface area measure. Finally, we also prove $L^1$-convergence, variance bounds, and normal approximation.

Constructing Group-Invariant CR Mappings

We construct CR mappings between spheres that are invariant under actions of finite unitary groups. In particular, we combine a tensoring procedure with D'Angelo's construction of a canonical group-invariant CR mapping to obtain new invariant mappings. We also explore possible gap phenomena in this setting.

On the dimension of Bergman spaces on $\mathbb{P}^1$

Inspired by a result by Sz\H{o}ke, we give potential-theoretic characterizations of the dimension of the Bergman space of holomorphic sections of a restriction of a holomorphic line bundle of $\mathbb{P}^1$ to some open set $D\subset\mathbb{P}^1$.

Polynomially convex embeddings of odd-dimensional closed manifolds

It is shown that any smooth closed orientable manifold of dimension $2k + 1$, $k \geq 2$, admits a smooth polynomially convex embedding into $\mathbb C^{3k}$. This improves by $1$ the previously known lower bound of $3k+1$ on the possible ambient complex dimension for such embeddings (which is sharp when $k=1$). It is further shown that the embeddings produced have the property that all continuous functions on the image can be uniformly approximated by holomorphic polynomials. Lastly, the same technique is modified to construct embeddings whose images have nontrivial hulls containing no nontrivial analytic disks. The distinguishing feature of this dimensional setting is the appearance of nonisolated CR-singularities, which cannot be tackled using only local analytic methods (as done in earlier results of this kind), and a topological approach is required.

Hardy Spaces for a Class of Singular Domains

We set a framework for the study of Hardy spaces inherited by complements of analytic hypersurfaces in domains with a prior Hardy space structure. The inherited structure is a filtration, various aspects of which are studied in specific settings. For punctured planar domains, we prove a generalization of a famous rigidity lemma of Kerzman and Stein. A stabilization phenomenon is observed for egg domains. Finally, using proper holomorphic maps, we derive a filtration of Hardy spaces for certain power-generalized Hartogs triangles, although these domains fall outside the scope of the original framework.

Stability of the hull(s) of an $n$-sphere in $\mathbb{C}^n$

We study the (global) Bishop problem for small perturbations of $\mathbf{S}^n$ --- the unit sphere of $\mathbb{C}\times\mathbb{R}^{n-1}$ --- in $\mathbb{C}^n$. We show that if $S\subset\mathbb{C}^n$ is a sufficiently-small perturbation of $\mathbf{S}^n$ (in the $\mathcal{C}^3$-norm), then $S$ bounds an $(n+1)$-dimensional ball $M\subset\mathbb{C}^n$ that is foliated by analytic disks attached to $S$. Furthermore, if $S$ is either smooth or real analytic, then so is $M$ (upto its boundary). Finally, if $S$ is real analytic (and satisfies a mild condition), then $M$ is both the envelope of holomorphy and the polynomially convex hull of $S$. This generalizes the previously known case of $n=2$ (CR singularities are isolated) to higher dimensions (CR singularities are nonisolated).

The Rational Hull of Rudin's Klein Bottle

In this note, a general result for determining the rational hulls of fibered sets in $\mathbb{C}^2$ is established. We use this to compute the rational hull of Rudin's Klein bottle, the first explicit example of a totally real nonorientable surface in $\mathbb{C}^2$. In contrast to its polynomial hull, which was shown to contain an open set by the first author in 2012, its rational hull is shown to be two-dimensional. Using the same method, we also compute the rational hulls of some other surfaces in $\mathbb{C}^2$.

Polynomially Convex Embeddings of Even-Dimensional Compact Manifolds

The totally-real embeddability of any $2k$-dimensional compact manifold $M$ into $\mathbb C^n$, $n\geq 3k$, has several consequences: the genericity of polynomially convex embeddings of $M$ into $\mathbb C^n$, the existence of $n$ smooth generators for the Banach algebra $\mathcal C(M)$, the existence of nonpolynomially convex embeddings with no analytic disks in their hulls, and the existence of special plurisubharmonic defining functions. We show that these results can be recovered even when $n=3k-1$, $k>1$, despite the presence of complex tangencies, thus lowering the known bound for the optimal $n$ in these (related but inequivalent) questions.

A nonpolynomially convex isotropic two-torus with no attached discs

We show --- with the means of a real-analytic example in $\mathbb{C}^3$ --- that Gromov's theorem on the presence of attached holomorphic discs for compact Lagrangian manifolds is not true in the isotropic (subcritical) case, even in the absence of an obvious obstruction, i.e, polynomial convexity.

Rational and Polynomial Density on Compact Real Manifolds

We establish a characterization for an $m$-manifold $M$ to admit $n$ functions $f_1$,...,$f_n$ and $n'$ functions $g_1,...,g_{n'}$ in $\mathcal{C}^\infty(M)$ so that every element of $\mathcal{C}^k(M)$ can be approximated by rational combinations of $f_1,...,f_n$ and polynomial combinations of $g_1,...,g_{n'}$. As an application, we show that the optimal value of $n$ and $n'$ for all manifolds of dimension $m$ is [3m/2], when $k\geq 1$ and $m\geq 2$.

Volume Approximations of Strictly Pseudoconvex Domains

In convex geometry, the Blaschke surface area measure on the boundary of a convex domain can be interpreted in terms of the complexity of approximating polyhedra. In response to a question raised by D. Barrett, this approach is formulated in the holomorphic setting to establish an alternate interpretation of Fefferman's hypersurface measure on boundaries of strictly pseudoconvex domains in $\mathbb{C}^2$. In particular, it is shown that Fefferman's measure can be recovered from the Bergman kernel of the domain. A connection with the geometry of the Heisenberg group, emerging from these results, is also discussed.
