Asymptotic behavior of a matter filled universe with exotic topology

The ADM formalism together with a constant mean curvature (CMC) temporal gauge is used to derive the monotonic decay of a weak Lyapunov function of the Einstein dynamical equations in an expanding universe with a positive cosmological constant and matter sources satisfying suitable energy conditions. While such a Lyapunov function does not, in general, represent a true Hamiltonian of the matter-coupled gravity dynamics (unlike in the vacuum case when it does), it can nevertheless be used to study the asymptotic behavior of the spacetimes. The Lyapunov function attains its infimum only in the limit that the matter sources be `turned off` or, at least, become asymptotically negligible provided that the universe model does not re-collapse and form singularities. Later we specialize our result to the case of a perfect fluid which satisfies the desired energy conditions. However, even in this special case, we show using Shutz's velocity potential formalism cast into Hamiltonian form that unlike the vacuum spacetimes (with or without a positive cosmological constant), construction of a true Hamiltonian for the dynamics in constant mean curvature temporal gauge is difficult and therefore the Lyapunov function does not have a straightforward physical interpretation. Nevertheless, we show, for the fluid with equation of state $P=(γ-1)ρ$ ($1\leqγ\leq2$), that the general results obtained hold true and the infimum of the weak Lyapunov function can be related to the Sigma constant, a topological invariant of the manifold. Utilizing these results, some general conclusions are drawn regarding the asymptotic state of the universe and the dynamical control of the allowed spatial topologies in the cosmological models.

The nonlinear stability of n+1 dimensional FLRW spacetimes

We prove nonlinear Lyapunov stability of a family of `$n+1$'-dimensional cosmological models of general relativity locally isometric to the Friedman Lemaître Robertson Walker (FLRW) spacetimes including a positive cosmological constant. In particular, we show that the perturbed solutions to the Einstein-Euler field equations around a class of spatially compact FLRW metrics (for which the spatial slices are compact negative Einstein spaces in general and hyperbolic for the physically relevant $n=3$ case) arising from regular Cauchy data remain uniformly bounded and decay to a family of metrics with constant negative spatial scalar curvature. To accomplish this result, we employ an energy method for the coupled Einstein-Euler field equations in constant mean extrinsic curvature spatial harmonic gauge (CMCSH). In order to handle Euler's equations, we construct energy from a current that is similar to the one derived by Christodoulou \cite{christodoulou} (and which coincides with Christodoulou's current on the Minkowski space) and show that this energy controls the desired norm of the fluid degrees of freedom. The use of a fluid energy current together with the CMCSH gauge condition casts the Einstein-Euler field equations into a coupled elliptic-hyperbolic system. Utilizing the estimates derived from the elliptic equations, we first show that the gravity-fluid energy functional remains uniformly bounded in the expanding direction. Using this uniform boundedness property, we later obtain sharp decay estimates if a positive cosmological constant $Λ$ is included, which suggests that the accelerated expansion of the physical universe that is induced by the positive cosmological constant is sufficient to control the non-linearities in the case of small data. A few physical consequences of this stability result are discussed.

Aspects of Quasi-local energy for gravity coupled to gauge fields

We study the aspects of quasi-local energy associated with a $2-$surface $Σ$ bounding a space-like domain $Ω$ of a physical $3+1$ dimensional spacetime in the regime of gravity coupled to a gauge field. The Wang-Yau quasi-local energy together with an additional term arising due to the coupling of gravity to a gauge field constitutes the total energy ($\mathcal{QLE}$) contained within the membrane $Σ=\partialΩ$. We specialize in the Kerr-Newman family of spacetimes which contains a U(1) gauge field coupled to gravity and an outer horizon. Through explicit calculations, we show that the total energy satisfies a weaker version of a Bekenstein type inequality $\mathcal{QLE}> \frac{Q^{2}}{2R}$ for large spherical membranes, $Q$ is the charge and $R$ is the radius of the membrane. Turning off the angular momentum (Reissner Nordström) yields $\mathcal{QLE}> \frac{Q^{2}}{2R}$ for all constant radii membranes containing the horizon and in such case the charge factor appearing in the right-hand side exactly equals to that of Bekenstein's inequality. Moreover, we show that the total quasi-local energy monotonically decays from $2M_{irr}+V_{Q}$ ($M_{irr}$ is the irreducible mass, $V_{Q}$ is the electric potential energy) at the outer horizon to $M$ ($M$ is the ADM mass) at the space-like infinity under the assumption of a small angular momentum of the black hole.

Local well-posedness of the Einstein-Yang-Mills system in CMCSHGC gauge

We study the local well-posedness of the Einstein-Yang-Mills equations in constant mean extrinsic curvature spatial harmonic generalized Coulomb gauge (CMCSHGC). In this choice of gauge, the complete Einstein-Yang-Mills equations reduce to a coupled elliptic-hyperbolic system. Utilizing the method developed by Andersson and Moncrief \cite{andersson2003elliptic}, we establish the existence of a unique, local, continuous-in-time solution of this coupled system. This yields an `in time' continuation criteria of the solutions which is to be used in the potential future proof of an improved continuation criteria for this coupled system utilizing Moncrief's light cone estimate technique.

On the non-blow up of energy critical nonlinear massless scalar fields in `3+1' dimensional globally hyperbolic spacetimes: Light cone estimates

Here we prove a global existence theorem for the solutions of the semi-linear wave equation with critical non-linearity admitting a positive definite Hamiltonian. Formulating a parametrix for the wave equation in a globally hyperbolic curved spacetime, we derive an apriori pointwise bound for the solution of the nonlinear wave equation in terms of the initial energy, from which the global existence follows in a straightforward way. This is accomplished in two steps. First, based on Moncrief's light cone formulation we derive an expression for the scalar field in terms of integrals over the past light cone from an arbitrary spacetime point to an `initial', Cauchy hypersurface and additional integrals over the intersection of this cone with the initial hypersurface. Secondly, we obtain apriori estimates for the energy associated with three quasi-local approximate time-like conformal Killing and one approximate Killing vector fields. Utilizing these naturally defined energies associated with the physical stress-energy tensor together with the integral equation, we show that the spacetime $L^{\infty}$ norm of the scalar field remains bounded in terms of the initial data and continues to be so as long as the spacetime remains singularity/Cauchy-horizon free.

The linear stability of the Einstein-Euler system on negative Einstein spaces

Here we prove the linear stability of a family of `$n+1$'-dimensional Friedmann Lemaître Robertson Walker (FLRW) cosmological models of general relativity. We show that the solutions to the linearized Einstein-Euler field equations around a class of FLRW metrics with compact spatial topology (negative Einstein spaces and in particular hyperbolic for $n=3$) arising from regular initial data remain uniformly bounded and decay to a family of metrics with constant negative spatial scalar curvature. Utilizing a Hodge decomposition of the fluid's $n-$velocity 1-form, the linearized Einstein-Euler system becomes elliptic-hyperbolic (and non-autonomous) in the CMCSH gauge facilitating an application of an energy type argument. Utilizing the estimates derived from the associated elliptic equations, we first prove the uniform boundedness of a Lyapunov functional (controlling appropriate norm of the data) in the expanding direction. Utilizing the uniform boundedness, we later obtain a sharp decay estimate which suggests that expansion of this particular universe model may be sufficient to control the non-linearities (including possible shock formation) of the Einstein-Euler system in a potential future proof of the fully non-linear stability. In addition, the rotational and harmonic parts of the fluid's $n-$velocity field couple to the remaining degrees of freedom in higher orders, which once again indicates a straightforward extension of current analysis to the fully non-linear setting in the sufficiently small data limit. In addition, our results require a certain integrability condition on the expansion factor and a suitable range of the adiabatic index $γ_{a}$ ($(1,\frac{n+1}{n})$ i.e., $(1,\frac{4}{3})$ in the physically relevant `$3+1$' universe) if the equation of state $p=(γ_{a}-1)ρ$ is chosen.

Einstein flow with matter sources: stability and convergence

Two recent articles \cite{ashtekar2015general, moncrief2019could} suggested an interesting dynamical mechanism within the framework of the vacuum Einstein flow (or Einstein-$Λ$ flow if a positive cosmological constant $Λ$ is included) which suggests that many closed (compact without boundary) manifolds that do not support homogeneous and isotropic metrics \textit{at all} will nevertheless evolve to be asymptotically compatible with the observed approximate homogeneity and isotropy of the physical universe. These studies however did not include matter sources. Therefore the aim of the present study is to include suitable matter sources and investigate whether one is able to draw a similar conclusion.

Attractors of the `n+1' dimensional Einstein-$Λ$ flow

Here we prove a global existence theorem for sufficiently small however fully nonlinear perturbations of a family of background solutions of the $`n+1$' vacuum Einstein equations in the presence of a positive cosmological constant $Λ$. With the advent of dark energy driven accelerated expansion of the universe, it is of fundamental importance in mathematical cosmology to include a positive cosmological constant, the simplest form of the dark energy in the vacuum Einstein equations. Such Einsteinian evolution is here designated as the `Einstein-$Λ$' flow. We study the background solutions of this `Einstein-$Λ$' flow in $`n+1$' dimensional spacetimes in constant mean curvature spatial harmonic gauge, $n\geq3$ and establish both linear and non-linear stability of such solutions. In the cases of number of spatial dimensions being strictly greater than $3$, the finite dimensional Einstein muduli spaces form the center manifold of the dynamics. A suitable shadow gauge condition \cite{andersson2011einstein} is implemented in order to treat these cases. In addition, the autonomous character of the suitably re-scaled Einstein flow breaks down as a consequence of including $Λ(>0)$. We construct a Lyapunov function (controlling a suitable norm of the small data) similar to a wave equation type energy for the non-linear non-autonomous evolution of the small data and prove its decay in the direction of cosmological expansion. Our results demonstrate the future stability and geodesic completeness of the perturbed spacetimes, and show that the scale-free geometry converges to an element of the Einstein moduli space (a point for $n=3$ and a finite dimensional space for $n>3$), which has significant consequence for the cosmic topology while restricting to the case of $n=3$.

Wave Packets in Curved Space: Curvature-Field Coupling

Elastic wave propagation is a century-old problem. Unlike on a flat manifold, analytical solution is not well established for a curved manifold. In this study we take a step towards building an analytical framework for solving the elastic wave propagation problem on an arbitrary manifold which admits a Riemannian metric with a global non-zero scalar curvature. We demonstrate the accuracy of the method by solving for some test cases, and also discuss some interesting physical insight that comes from solving the wave equations for non-vanishing curvature.

Could the Universe have an Exotic Topology?

A recent article uncovered a surprising dynamical mechanism at work within the (vacuum) Einstein `flow' that strongly suggests that many closed 3-manifolds that do not admit a locally homogeneous and isotropic metric \textit{at all} will nevertheless evolve, under Einsteinian evolution, in such a way as to be \textit{asymptotically} compatible with the observed, approximate, spatial homogeneity and isotropy of the universe \cite{Moncrief:2015}. Since this previous article, however, ignored the potential influence of \textit{dark-energy} and its correspondent accelerated expansion upon the conclusions drawn, we analyze herein the modifications to the foregoing argument necessitated by the inclusion of a \textit{positive} cosmological constant --- the simplest viable model for dark energy.
