$β$-Decay Half-Lives Serve as Novel Evidence for the New Magic Number \(N=32\)

Conventional signatures of nuclear magic number, including low-lying quadrupole collectivity and mass systematics, face significant challenges when probing emergent shell closures near the drip line. However, $β$-decay half-lives are among the first experimental observables measurable following the discovery of neutron-rich isotopes. This letter demonstrates that $β$-decay half-lives provide evidence for the emergent magic number $N=32$. The observed half-life pattern around the $N=32$ can be attributed to the occupation probabilities of orbitals above this shell gap, which directly reflect the gap's magnitude. Our results reveal a pronounced $N=32$ shell gap in Ca isotopes and a weaker yet apparent gap in K isotopes, consistent with mass and electromagnetic transition data. Furthermore, the analysis indicates no prominent closed-shell signature at $N=32$ in Ar and Cl isotopes.

High-Precision Mass Measurements of Proton-Rich Rh, Pd, Cd isotopes in the vicinity of 100Sn and Impact on X-Ray Burst and Supernova Nucleosynthesis

Using the ZeroDegree multi-reflection time-of-flight mass spectrograph of the CRISMASS project at RIKEN Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory, we performed high-precision mass measurements of proton-rich nuclei near the doubly magic nucleus 100Sn, achieving uncertainties on the order of 10 keV. The masses of 91Rh, 92Pd, and 96Cd were determined for the first time with high precision, and the accuracy of several additional masses was substantially improved. Incorporating the new data into X-ray burst simulations significantly reduces the abundance uncertainties in the $A$ = 90-100 region, shifting the reaction flow toward $A$ = 90 production and suppressing the synthesis of heavier nuclei. Further investigation of the $νp$-process indicates that 99Rh plays a significant role in the reaction flow within the mass region studied. These high-precision mass measurements refine the mass surface near 100Sn and provide critical constraints on models of proton-rich nucleosynthesis.

A high-lying isomer in ^{92}Zr with lifetime modulated by the atomic charge states: a proposed approach for a nuclear gamma-ray laser

The nuclides ^{92}Zr are produced and transported by using a radioactive beam line to a lowbackground detection station. After a flight time of about 1.14 μs, the ions are implanted into a carbon foil, and four γ rays deexciting the 8+ state in ^{92}Zr are observed in coincidence with the implantation signals within a few nanoseconds. We conjecture that there exists an isomer located slightly above the 8^{+} state in ^{92}Zr. The isomeric lifetime in highly charged states is extended significantly due to the blocking of internal conversion decay channels, enabling its survival over the transportation. During the slowing-down process in the carbon foil, the ^{92}Zr ions capture electron and evolve toward neutral atoms, and consequently the lifetime is restored to a normal short value. Such a high-lying isomer depopulated by a low-energy transition may provide unique opportunity to develop nuclear γ laser.
