Robust and clean Majorana zero mode in the vortex core of high-temperature superconductor (Li0.84Fe0.16)OHFeSe

The Majorana fermion, which is its own anti-particle and obeys non-abelian statistics, plays a critical role in topological quantum computing. It can be realized as a bound state at zero energy, called a Majorana zero mode (MZM), in the vortex core of a topological superconductor, or at the ends of a nanowire when both superconductivity and strong spin orbital coupling are present. A MZM can be detected as a zero-bias conductance peak (ZBCP) in tunneling spectroscopy. However, in practice, clean and robust MZMs have not been realized in the vortices of a superconductor, due to contamination from impurity states or other closely-packed Caroli-de Gennes-Matricon (CdGM) states, which hampers further manipulations of Majorana fermions. Here using scanning tunneling spectroscopy, we show that a ZBCP well separated from the other discrete CdGM states exists ubiquitously in the cores of free vortices in the defect free regions of (Li0.84Fe0.16)OHFeSe, which has a superconducting transition temperature of 42 K. Moreover, a Dirac-cone-type surface state is observed by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, and its topological nature is confirmed by band calculations. The observed ZBCP can be naturally attributed to a MZM arising from this chiral topological surface states of a bulk superconductor. (Li0.84Fe0.16)OHFeSe thus provides an ideal platform for studying MZMs and topological quantum computing.

Spin-triplet $f$-wave pairing in twisted bilayer graphene near 1/4 filling

We investigate the twisted bilayer graphene by a two-orbital Hubbard model on the honeycomb lattice. The model is studied near 1/4 band filling by using the singular-mode functional renormalization group theory. Spin-triplet $f$-wave pairing is found from weak to moderate coupling limit of the local interactions, and is associated with the Hund's rule coupling and incommensurate spin fluctuations at moderate momenta.

Chiral and helical $p$-wave superconductivity in doped bilayer BiH

We investigate the superconductivity (SC) driven by correlation effects in electron-doped bilayer BiH near a type-II van Hove singularity (vHS). By functional renormalization group, we find triplet $p$-wave pairing prevails in the interaction parameter space, except for spin density wave (SDW) closer to the vHS or when the interaction is too strong. Because of the large atomic spin-orbital coupling (SOC), the $p$-wave pairing occurs between equal-spin electrons, and is chiral and two-fold degenerate. The chiral state supports in-gap edge states, even though the low energy bands in the SC state are topologically trivial. The absence of mirror symmetry allows Rashba SOC that couples unequal spins, but we find its effect is of very high order, and can only drive the chiral $p$-wave into helical $p$-wave deep in the SC state. Interestingly, there is a six-fold degeneracy in the helical states, reflected by the relative phase angle $θ=nπ/3$ (for integer $n$) between the spin components of the helical pairing function. The phase angle is shown to be stable in the vortex state.

Theory of the Evolution of Superconductivity in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ under Anisotropic Strain

Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ is a leading candidate for chiral $p$-wave superconductivity. The detailed mechanism of superconductivity in this material is still the subject of intense investigations. Since superconductivity is sensitive to the topology of the Fermi surface (the contour of zero-energy quasi-particle excitations in the momentum space in the normal state), changing this topology can provide a strong test of theory. Recent experiments tuned the Fermi surface topology efficiently by applying planar anisotropic strain. Using functional renormalization group theory, we study the superconductivity and competing orders in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ under strain. We find a rapid initial increase in the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$, which can be associated with the evolution of the Fermi surface toward a Lifshitz reconstruction under increasing strain. Before the Lifshitz reconstruction is reached, however, the system switches from the superconducting state to a spin density wave state. The theory agrees well with recent strain experiments showing an enhancement of $T_c$ followed by an intriguing sudden drop.

Magnetic excitations in quasi-one dimensional helimagnets: Magnon decays and in uence of the inter-chain interactions

We present a comprehensive study of the magnetic properties of the long-range ordered quasi-one dimensional $J_{1}$-$J_{2}$ systems with a newly developed torque equilibrium spin-wave expansion approach, which can describe the spin Casimir and magnon decay effects in a unified framework. While the framework does not lose the generality, our discussion will be restricted to two representative types of inter-chain coupling systems: $J_{3}$- or $J_{4}$-system respectively. In spite of the long-range spiral order, the dynamical properties of these systems turn out to be highly nontrivial due to the incommensurate noncollinear spin configuration and the strong quantum fluctuation effects enhanced by the frustration and low-dimensionality. Both the systems show prominent spin Casimir effects induced by the vacuum fluctuation of the spin waves and related modification of the ordering vector, Lifshitz point's position and sublattice magnetization. Significant and spontaneous magnon decay effects are manifested in the quantum corrections to the excitation spectrum. By adjusting the strength of magnetic anisotropy and varying the approximation scheme, it is revealed that these striking distinct features are quite robust and have deep connection with both the spin Casimir and the magnon decay effects. Thus these special consequences of the inter-chain coupling on the spin wave dynamics may be served as a set of probes for different types of inter-chain couplings in experiments. At last, to guide experimental measurements such as inelastic neutron scattering in realistic materials and complement our theoretical framework, we develop the analytical theory of the dynamical structure factor within the torque equilibrium formulism and provide the explicit results of the quasi-one dimensional $J_{1}$-$J_{2}$ systems.

Spin Casimir Effect in Non-collinear Quantum Antiferromagnets

The Casimir effect is a general phenomenon in physics, which arises when the vacuum fluctuation of an arbitrary field is modified by static or slowly varying boundary. However, its spin version is rarely addressed, mainly due to the fact that a macroscopic boundary in quantum spin systems is hard to define. In this article, we explore the spin Casimir effect induced by the zero-point fluctuation of spin waves in a general non-collinear ordered quantum antiferromagnet. This spin Casimir effect results in a spin torque between local spins and further causes various singular and divergent results in the framework of spin-wave theory, which invalidate the standard $1/S$ expansion procedure. To avoid this dilemma, we develop a self-consistent spin-wave expansion approach, which preserves the spin-wave expansion away from singularities and divergence. A detailed spin-wave analysis of the antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 Heisenberg model on a spatially anisotropic triangular lattice is undertaken within our approach. Our results indicate that the spiral order is only stable in the region $0.5<α<1.2$, where $α$ is the ratio of the coupling constants. In addition, the instability in the region $1.2<α<2$ is owing to the spin Casimir effect instead of the vanishing sublattice magnetization. And this extended spiral instable region may host some quantum disordered phases besides the quantum order by disorder induced Neel phase. Furthermore, our method provides an efficient and convenient tool that can estimate the correct exchange parameters and outline the quantum phase diagrams, which can be useful for experimental fitting processes in frustrated quantum magnets.

Quantum impurities in channel mixing baths

We propose a versatile strategy for numerical renormalization group solution of general channel-mixing Kondo and Anderson models beyond previous reach, opening the door toward broad applications in protocol non-perturbative machineries, such as dynamical cluster approximation and cluster dynamical mean field theory, for strongly correlated electron systems. We illustrate the strategy by investigating the quantum phase transitions in two quantum impurity models with cases untouched before.

Pairing with dominant triplet component and possible weak topological superconductivity in BiS$_2$-based superconductors

We show that the newly discovered BiS$_2$-based superconductors may have a dominant triplet pairing component, in addition to a subdominant singlet component arising from the spin-orbital coupling. The pairing respects time-reversal symmetry. The dominant triplet gap causes gap sign changes between the spin-split Fermi pockets. Within a pocket, the gap function respects $d^*_{x^2-y^2}$-wave symmetry, where the star indicates joint spin-lattice rotations. Below the Lifshitz filling level the gap is nodelss and the superconducting state is weak topological. Above the Lifshitz points the gap becomes nodal. The dominant triplet pairing is consistent with the experimental upper critical field exceeding the Pauli limit.
