Strong Coupling Superconductivity in Iron-Chalcogenide FeTe$_{0.55}$Se$_{0.45}$

The superconducting order parameter in the iron-chalcogenide superconductor FeTe$_{0.55}$Se$_{0.45}$ ($T_\textrm{c}$ = 14.2 K) is investigated by point-contact Andreev reflection spectroscopy. The energy gap magnitude (3.8 meV at 1.70 K) and temperature dependence as extracted from the Andreev conductance spectra reveal strong-coupling superconductivity and is consistent with $s$-wave order parameter symmetry. No clear evidence for multiple order parameters or interference from multiple bands is observed. A conductance enhancement persists above $T_\textrm{c}$ to $\sim 18-20$ K and possible origins, including novel quasiparticle scattering due to strong antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations, are discussed.

Improved axisymmetric lattice Boltzmann scheme

This paper proposes an improved lattice Boltzmann scheme for incompressible axisymmetric flows. The scheme has the following features. First, it is still within the framework of the standard lattice Boltzmann method using the single-particle density distribution function and consistent with the philosophy of the lattice Boltzmann method. Second, the source term of the scheme is simple and contains no velocity gradient terms. Owing to this feature, the scheme is easy to implement. In addition, the singularity problem at the axis can be appropriately handled without affecting an important advantage of the lattice Boltzmann method: the easy treatment of boundary conditions. The scheme is tested by simulating Hagen-Poiseuille flow, three-dimensional Womersley flow, Wheeler benchmark problem in crystal growth, and lid-driven rotational flow in cylindrical cavities. It is found that the numerical results agree well with the analytical solutions and/or the results reported in previous studies.

The symmetry energy in nuclear reactions

New results for the strength of the symmetry energy are presented which illustrate the complementary aspects encountered in reactions probing nuclear densities below and above saturation. A systematic study of isotopic effects in spectator fragmentation was performed at the ALADIN spectrometer with 124Sn primary and 107Sn and 124La secondary beams of 600 MeV/nucleon incident energy. The analysis within the Statistical Fragmentation Model shows that the symmetry-term coefficient entering the liquid-drop description of the emerging fragments decreases significantly as the multiplicity of fragments and light particles from the disintegration of the produced spectator systems increases. Higher densities were probed in the FOPI/LAND study of nucleon and light-particle flows in central and mid-peripheral collisions of 197Au+197Au nuclei at 400 MeV/nucleon incident energy. From the comparison of the measured neutron and hydrogen squeeze-out ratios with predictions of the UrQMD model a moderately soft symmetry term with a density dependence of the potential term proportional to (rho/rho_0)^{gamma} with gamma = 0.9 +- 0.3 is favored.

Neutron-proton elliptic flow in Au + Au

The elliptic flow of neutrons, protons and light complex particles in reactions of neutron-rich systems at relativistic energies is proposed as an observable sensitive to the strength of the symmetry term in the equation of state at supra-normal densities. Preliminary results from a study of the existing FOPI/LAND data for 197Au + 197Au collisions at 400 A MeV with the UrQMD model favor a moderately soft symmetry term with a density dependence of the potential term proportional to (rho/rho_0)^gamma with gamma = 0.9 +- 0.3.

Lattice-Boltzmann model for axisymmetric thermal flows

In this brief report, a thermal lattice-Boltzmann (LB) model is presented for axisymmetric thermal flows in the incompressible limit. The model is based on the double-distribution-function LB method, which has attracted much attention since its emergence for its excellent numerical stability. Compared with the existing axisymmetric thermal LB models, the present model is simpler and retains the inherent features of the standard LB method. Numerical simulations are carried out for the thermally developing laminar flows in circular ducts and the natural convection in an annulus between two coaxial vertical cylinders. The Nusselt number obtained from the simulations agrees well with the analytical solutions and/or the results reported in previous studies.

Polarization Variability Arising from Clumps in the Winds of Wolf-Rayet Stars

The polarimetric and photometric variability of Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars as caused by clumps in the winds, is revisited. In the model which is improved from Li et al. 2000, the radial expansion of the thickness is accounted for, but we retain the dependence on the beta velocity law, stellar occultation effects. We again search for parameters that can yield results consistent with observations in regards to the mean polarization, the ratio of polarimetric to photometric variability, and the volume filling factor. Clump generation and spatial distribution are randomized by the Monte Carlo method so as to produce clumps which are, in the mean, distributed uniformly in space and have time intervals with a Gaussian distribution. The generated clumps move radially outward with a velocity law determined by a beta index, and the angular size of the clumps is assumed to keep fixed. By fitting the observational results and the volume filling factor, the clump velocity law index beta and clump ejection rate are inferred, and are found to be well constrained. In addition, the subpeak features on broad emission lines seem to support the clump ejection rate. Meanwhile, the fraction of the total mass loss rate that is contained in the clumps is obtained by fitting the observed polarization. We conclude that this picture for the clump properties produces a valuable diagnostic of WR wind structure.

Thermal Management in Large Bi2212 Mesas used for Terahertz Sources

We present a thermal analysis of a patterned mesa on a Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 (Bi2212) single crystal that is based on tunneling characteristics of the c-axis stack of ~800 intrinsic Josephson junctions in the mesa. Despite the large mesa volume (e.g., 40x300x1.2 micron3) and power dissipation that result in selfheating and backbending of the current-voltage curve (I-V), there are accessible bias conditions for which significant polarized THz-wave emission can be observed. We estimate the mesa temperature by equating the quasiparticle resistance, Rqp(T), to the ratio V/I over the entire I-V including the backbending region. These temperatures are used to predict the unpolarized black-body radiation reaching our bolometer and there is substantial agreement over the entire I-V. As such, backbending results from the particular Rqp(T) for Bi2212, as first discussed by Fenton, rather than a significant suppression of the energy gap. This model also correctly predicts the observed disappearance of backbending above ~60 K.

Fabrication and Test of Pixelated CZT Detectors with Different Pixel Pitches and Thicknesses

The main methods grown Cadmium Zinc Telluride (CZT) crystals with high yield and excellent homogeneity are Modified Horizontal Bridgman (MHB) and High Pressure Bridgman (HPB) processes, respectively. In this contribution, the readout system based on two 32-channel NCI-ASICs for pixellated CZT detector arrays has been developed and tested. The CZT detectors supplied by Orbotech (MHB) and eV products (HPB) are tested by NCI-ASIC readout system. The CZT detectors have an array of 8x8 or 11x11 pixel anodes fabricated on the anode surface with the area up to 2 cm x2 cm and the thickness of CZT detectors ranges from 0.5 cm to 1 cm. Energy spectra resolution and electron mobility-lifetime products of 8x8 pixels CZT detector with different thicknesses have been investigated.

Local Structure of Thermoelectric Ca3Co4O9

We have combined temperature dependent local structural measurements with first principles density functional calculations to develop a three dimensional local structure model of the misfit system [Ca2CoO3][CoO2]1.61 (referred to as Ca3Co4O9) which has a rock salt structure stacked incommensurately on a hexagonal CoO2 lattice. The local structural measurements reveal a low coordination of Co(2)-O bonds in the rock salt layer with large static structural disorder. The temperature dependence of the Co(1)-Co(1) bond correlations in the CoO2 layer are found to be normal above ~75K and with a very small static disorder component. An anomalous enhancement in the Co(1)-Co(1) correlations occurs at the onset of long-range magnetic order. Density functional computations suggest that the reduction of the coordination of Co(2) is due to the formation of chains of Co(2)Ox in the a-b plane linked to the Ca-O layers by c-axis Co(2)-O bonds. The reduced dimensionality introduced by the chain-like structure in the rock salt layer and high atomic order in the C

Evidence for unusual superconducting correlations coexisting with stripe order in La(1.875)Ba(0.125)CuO(4)

We present new x-ray and neutron scattering measurements of stripe order in La(1.875)Ba(0.125)CuO(4), along with low-field susceptibility, thermal conductivity, and specific heat data. We compare these with previously reported results for resistivity and thermopower. Temperature-dependent features indicating transitions (or crossovers) are correlated among the various experimental quantities. Taking into account recent spectroscopic studies, we argue that the most likely interpretation of the complete collection of results is that an unusual form of two-dimensional superconducting correlations appears together with the onset of spin-stripe order. Recent theoretical proposals for a sinusoidally-modulated superconducting state compatible with stripe order provide an intriguing explanation of our results and motivate further experimental tests. We also discuss evidence for one-dimensional pairing correlations that appear together with the charge order. With regard to the overall phenomenology, we consider the degree to which similar behavior may have been observed in other cuprates, and describe possible connections to various puzzling phenomena in cuprate superconductors.

Spin-orbit interaction effect in the electronic structure of \BiTe \ observed by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy

The electronic structure of $p$-type doped \BiTe is studied by angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) to experimentally confirm the mechanism responsible for the high thermoelectric figure of merit. Our ARPES study shows that the band edges are located off the $Γ$-Z line in the Brillouin zone, which provides direct observation that the spin-orbit interaction is a key factor to understand the electronic structure and the corresponding thermoelectric properties of \BiTe. Successive time dependent ARPES measurement also reveals that the electron-like bands crossing E$_F$ near the $\underlineΓ$ point are formed in an hour after cleaving the crystals. We interpret these as surface states induced by surface band bending, possibly due to quintuple inter-layer distance change of \BiTe.

Precision predictions for Z'-production at the CERN LHC: QCD matrix elements, parton showers, and joint resummation

We improve the theoretical predictions for the production of extra neutral gauge bosons at hadron colliders by implementing the Z' bosons in the MC@NLO generator and by computing their differential and total cross sections in joint p_T and threshold resummation. The two improved predictions are found to be in excellent agreement with each other for mass spectra, p_T spectra, and total cross sections, while the PYTHIA parton and ``power'' shower predictions usually employed for experimental analyses show significant shortcomings both in normalization and shape. The theoretical uncertainties from scale and parton density variations and non-perturbative effects are found to be 9%, 8%, and less than 5%, respectively, and thus under good control. The implementation of our improved predictions in terms of the new MC@NLO generator or resummed K factors in the analysis chains of the Tevatron and LHC experiments should be straightforward and lead to more precise determinations or limits of the Z' boson masses and/or couplings.

X-ray Emission from Magnetically Torqued Disks of Oe/Be Stars

We focus attention on the Oe/Be stars to test the concept that the disks of these stars form by magnetic channeling of wind material toward the equator. Calculations are made of the X-rays expected from the Magnetically Torqued Disk (MTD) model for Be stars discussed by Cassinelli et al. (2002), by Maheswaran (2003), and by Brown et al. (2004). The dominant parameters in the model are the $β$ value of the velocity law, the rotation rate of the star, $S_o$, and the ratio of the magnetic field energy density to the disk gravitational energy density, $γ$. The model predictions are compared with the $ROSAT$ observations obtained for an O9.5 star $ζ$ Oph from \Berghofer et al. (1996) and for 7 Be stars from Cohen et al. (1997). Extra considerations are also given here to the well studied Oe star $ζ$ Oph for which we have $Chandra$ observations of the X-ray line profiles of the triad of He-like lines from the ion Mg XI.

Two-Dimensional Superconducting Fluctuations in Stripe-Ordered La(1.875)Ba(0.125)CuO(4)

Recent spectroscopic observations of a d-wave-like gap in stripe-ordered La(2-x)Ba(x)CuO(4) with x=1/8 have led us to critically analyze the anisotropic transport and magnetization properties of this material. The data suggest that concomitant with the spin ordering is an electronic decoupling of the CuO(2) planes. We observe a transition (or crossover) to a state of two-dimensional (2D) fluctuating superconductivity, which eventually reaches a 2D superconducting state below a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition. Thus, it appears that the stripe order in La(2-x)Ba(x)CuO(4) frustrates three-dimensional superconducting phase order, but is fully compatible with 2D superconductivity and an enhanced T_c.

Non-left-handed transmission and bianisotropic effect in a [pi]-shaped metallic metamaterials

A [pi]-shaped metallic metamaterial (geometrically, a combination medium of C-shaped resonators and continuous wires) is proposed to numerically investigate its transmission band near the resonant frequency, where otherwise it should be a negative-permeability (or negative-permittivity) stop band if either the C-shaped or continuous-wire constituent is separately considered. However, in contrast to the left-handed materials (LHMs)composed of split-ring resonators and wires as well as other metallic LHMs, this resonant transmission is a non-left-handed one as a result of the intrinsic bianisotropic effect attributed to the electrically asymmetric configuration of this [pi]-shaped metamaterial.

ARPES Study of the Metal-Insulator Transition in Bismuth Cobaltates

We present an angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) study of a Mott-Hubbard-type bismuth cobaltate system across a metal-insulator transition. By varying the amount of Pb substitution, and by doping with Sr or Ba cation, a range of insulating to metallic properties is obtained. We observe a systematic change in the spectral weight of the coherent and incoherent parts, accompanied by an energy shift of the incoherent part. The band dispersion also shows the emergence of a weakly dispersing state at the Fermi energy with increasing conductivity. These changes correspond with the changes in the temperature-dependent resistivity behavior. We address the nature of the coherent-incoherent parts in relation to the peak-dip-hump feature seen in cuprates superconductors.

Charge order, metallic behavior and superconductivity in La_{2-x}Ba_xCuO_4 with x=1/8

The ab-plane optical properties of a cleaved single crystal of La_{2-x}Ba_xCuO_4 for x=1/8 (T_c ~ 2.4 K) have been measured over a wide frequency and temperature range. The low-frequency conductivity is Drude-like and shows a metallic response with decreasing temperature. However, below ~ 60 K, corresponding to the onset of charge-stripe order, there is a rapid loss of spectral weight below about 40 meV. The gapping of single-particle excitations looks surprisingly similar to that observed in superconducting La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_4, including the presence of a residual Drude peak with reduced weight; the main difference is that the lost spectral weight moves to high, rather than zero, frequency, reflecting the absence of a bulk superconducting condensate.
