Optical and Raman spectroscopy studies on Fe-based superconductors

A brief review of optical and Raman studies on the Fe-based superconductors is given, with special emphasis on the competing phenomenon in this system. Optical investigations on ReFeAsO (Re=rare-earth element) and AFe$_2$As$_2$ (A=alkaline-earth metal) families provide clear evidence for the gap formation in the broken symmetry states, including the partial gaps in the spin-density wave states of parent compounds, and the pairing gaps in the superconducting states for doped compounds. Especially, the superconducting gap has an s-wave pairing lineshape in hole-doped BaFe$_2$As$_2$. Optical phonons at zone center detected by Raman and infrared techniques are classified for several Fe-based compounds. Related issues, such as the electron-phonon coupling and the effect of spin-density wave and superconducting transitions on phonons, are also discussed. Meanwhile, open questions including the \emph{T}-dependent mid-infrared peak at 0.6-0.7 eV, electronic correlation, and the similarities/differences between high-\Tc cuprates and Fe-based superconductors are also briefly discussed. Important results from other experimental probes are compared with optical data to better understand the spin-density wave properties, the superconductivity, and the multi-band character in Fe-based compounds.

Spin-Peierls-like transition in AFe$_2$As$_2$(A=Ba, Sr)

From first-principles density functional theory calculations combined with varying temperature Raman experiments, we show that AFe$_2$As$_2$ (A=Ba, Sr), the parent compound of the FeAs based superconductors of the new structural family, undergoes a spin-Peierls-like phase transition at low temperature. The coupling between the phonons and frustrated spins is proved to be the main cause of the structural transition from the tetragonal to orthorhombic phase. These results well explain the magnetic and structural phase transitions in AFe$_2$As$_2$(A=Ba, Sr) recently observed by neutron scattering.

Raman spectra in iron-based quaternary CeO$_{1-x}$F$_x$FeAs and LaO$_{1-x}$F$_x$FeAs

Raman spectra have been measured on iron-based quaternary CeO$_{1-x}$F$_x$FeAs and LaO$_{1-x}$F$_x$FeAs with varying fluorine doping at room temperatures. A group analysis has been made to clarify the optical modes. Based on the first principle calculations, the observed phonon modes can be assigned accordingly. In LaO$_{1-x}$F$_x$FeAs, the E$_g$ and A$_{1g}$ modes related to the vibrations of La, are suppressed with increasing F doping. However F doping only has a small effect on the E$_g$ and A$_{1g}$ modes of Fe and As. The Raman modes of La and As are absent in rare-earth substituted CeO$_{1-x}$F$_x$FeAs, and the E$_g$ mode of oxygen, corresponding to the in-plane vibration of oxygen, moves to around 450 cm$^{-1}$ and shows a very sharp peak. Electronic scattering background is low and electron-phonon coupling is not evident for the observed phonon modes. Three features are found above 500 cm$^{-1}$, which may be associated with multi-phonon process. Nevertheless it is also possible that they are related to magnetic fluctuations or interband transitions of d orbitals considering their energies.

Phonon softening and "forbidden" mode observed by Raman scattering in Na0.5CoO2

Polarized Raman scattering measurements have been performed on Na0.5CoO2 single crystal from 8 to 305 K. Both the A1g and E1g phonon modes show a softening below Tc1 ~ 83 K. Additionally, the A1g phonon mode, which is forbidden in the scattering geometry of cross polarization for the triangular CoO2 layers, appears below Tc1. In contrast, the metal-insulator transition at Tc2 ~ 46 K has only secondary effect on the Raman spectra. The phonon softening and the ``forbidden'' Raman intensity follow closely magnetic order parameter and the gap function at the Fermi surface, indicating that the distortion of CoO6 octahedra at Tc1, instead of the Na ordering at ~350 K, is the relevant structural component of the 83 K phase transition.
