Highly anisotropic interlayer magnetoresistance in ZrSiS nodal-line Dirac semimetal

We instigate the angle-dependent magnetoresistance (AMR) of the layered nodal-line Dirac semimetal ZrSiS for the in-plane and out-of-plane current directions. This material has recently revealed an intriguing butterfly-shaped in-plane AMR that is not well understood. Our measurements of the polar out-of-plane AMR show a surprisingly different response with a pronounced cusp-like feature. The maximum of the cusp-like anisotropy is reached when the magnetic field is oriented in the $a$-$b$ plane. Moreover, the AMR for the azimuthal out-of-plane current direction exhibits a very strong four-fold $a$-$b$ plane anisotropy. Combining the Fermi surfaces calculated from first principles with the Boltzmann's semiclassical transport theory we reproduce and explain all the prominent features of the unusual behavior of the in-plane and out-of-plane AMR. We are also able to clarify the origin of the strong non-saturating transverse magnetoresistance as an effect of imperfect charge-carrier compensation and open orbits. Finally, by combining our theoretical model and experimental data we estimate the average relaxation time of $2.6\times10^{-14}$~s and the mean free path of $15$~nm at 1.8~K in our samples of ZrSiS.

Observation of a nodal chain with Dirac surface states in TiB2

Topological nodal-line semimetals (TNLSMs) are characterized by symmetry-protected band crossings extending along one-dimensional lines in momentum space. The nodal lines exhibit a variety of possible configurations, such as nodal ring, nodal link, nodal chain, and nodal knot. Here, using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we observe nodal rings in the orthogonal kz = 0 and kx = 0 planes of the Brillouin zone in TiB2. The nodal rings connect with each other on the intersecting line Γ-K of the orthogonal planes, forming a remarkable nodal-chain structure. Furthermore, we observe surface states (SSs) on the (001) cleaved surface, which are consistent with the calculated SSs considering the contribution from both Ti and B terminations. The calculated SSs have novel Dirac-cone-like band structures, which are distinct from the usual drumhead SSs with a single flat band proposed in other TNLSMs.

Trivial topological phase of CaAgP and the topological nodal-line transition in CaAg(P1-xAsx)

By performing angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and first-principles calculations, we address the topological phase of CaAgP and investigate the topological phase transition in CaAg(P1-xAsx). We reveal that in CaAgP, the bulk band gap and surface states with a large bandwidth are topologically trivial, in agreement with hybrid density functional theory calculations. The calculations also indicate that application of "negative" hydrostatic pressure can transform trivial semiconducting CaAgP into an ideal topological nodal-line semimetal phase. The topological transition can be realized by partial isovalent P/As substitution at x = 0.38.

Manipulation of type-I and type-II Dirac points in PdTe2 superconductor by external pressure

A pair of type-II Dirac cones in PdTe$_2$ was recently predicted by theories and confirmed in experiments, making PdTe$_2$ the first material that processes both superconductivity and type-II Dirac fermions. In this work, we study the evolution of Dirac cones in PdTe$_2$ under hydrostatic pressure by the first-principles calculations. Our results show that the pair of type-II Dirac points disappears at 6.1 GPa. Interestingly, a new pair of type-I Dirac points from the same two bands emerges at 4.7 GPa. Due to the distinctive band structures compared with those of PtSe$_2$ and PtTe$_2$, the two types of Dirac points can coexist in PdTe$_2$ under proper pressure (4.7-6.1 GPa). The emergence of type-I Dirac cones and the disappearance of type-II Dirac ones are attributed to the increase/decrease of the energy of the states at $Γ$ and $A$ point, which have the anti-bonding/bonding characters of interlayer Te-Te atoms. On the other hand, we find that the superconductivity of PdTe$_2$ slightly decreases with pressure. The pressure-induced different types of Dirac cones combined with superconductivity may open a promising way to investigate the complex interactions between Dirac fermions and superconducting quasi-particles.

Observation of Large Topologically Trivial Fermi-Arcs in the Candidate Type-II Weyl Semimetal WTe2

We report angle-resolved photoemission experiments resolving the distinct electronic structure of the inequivalent top and bottom (001) surfaces of WTe2. On both surfaces, we identify a surface state that forms a large Fermi-arc emerging out of the bulk electron pocket. Using surface electronic structure calculations, we show that these Fermi arcs are topologically trivial and that their existence is independent of the presence of type-II Weyl points in the bulk band structure. This implies that the observation of surface Fermi arcs alone does not allow the identification of WTe2 as a topological Weyl semimetal. We further use the identification of the two different surfaces to clarify the number of Fermi surface sheets in WTe2.

Fermi arcs and their topological character in the candidate type-II Weyl semimetal MoTe2

We report a combined experimental and theoretical study of the candidate type-II Weyl semimetal MoTe2. Using laser-based angle-resolved photoemission we resolve multiple distinct Fermi arcs on the inequivalent top and bottom (001) surfaces. All surface states observed experimentally are reproduced by an electronic structure calculation for the experimental crystal structure that predicts a topological Weyl semimetal state with 8 type-II Weyl points. We further use systematic electronic structure calculations simulating different Weyl point arrangements to discuss the robustness of the identified Weyl semimetal state and the topological character of Fermi arcs in MoTe2.

Continuous magnetic phase transition in half-frustrated Ca2Os2O7

We present the specific heat, magnetization, optical spectroscopy measurements and the firstprinciple calculations on the Weberite structure Ca2Os2O7 single crystal/polycrystalline sample. The Ca2Os2O7 shows a Curie-Weiss nature at high temperature and goes into a ferrimagnetic insulating state at 327 K on cooling. A λ-like peak is observed at 327 K in the specific heat implying a second-order phase transition. The vanishing electronic specific heat at low temperature suggests a full energy gap. At high temperature above the transition, small amount of itinerant carriers with short life time τare observed, which is gapped at 20 K with a direct gap of 0:24 eV . Our first principle calculations indicate that the anti-ferromagnetic (AFM) correlation with intermediate Coulomb repulsion U could effectively split Os(4b) t2g bands and push them away from Fermi level(EF). On the other hand, a non-collinear magnetic interaction is needed to push the Os(4c) bands away from EF, which could be induced by Os(4c)-Os(4c) frustration. Therefore, AFM correlation, Coulomb repulsion U and non-collinear interaction all play important roles for the insulating ground state in Ca2Os2O7.
