Dynamics of bi-stripes and a colossal metal-insulator transition in the bi-layer manganite La$_{2-2x}$Sr$_{1+2x}$Mn$_{2}$O$_{7}$ (x~0.59)

In correlated electron materials, electrons often self-organize and form a variety of patterns with potential ordering of charges, spins, and orbitals, which are believed to be closely connected to many novel properties of these materials including superconductivity, metal-insulator transitions, and the CMR effect. How these real-space patterns affect the conductivity and other properties of materials (which are usually described in momentum space) is one of the major challenges of modern condensed matter physics. Moreover, although the presence of static stripes is indisputable, the existence (and potential impacts) of fluctuating stripes in such compounds is a subject of great debate. Here we present the electronic excitations of La$_{2-2x}$Sr$_{1+2x}$Mn$_{2}$O$_{7}$ (x ~ 0.59) probed by angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES), from which we demonstrate that a novel type of ordering, termed bi-stripes, can exhibit either static or fluctuating order as a function of temperature. We found that the static bi-stripe order is especially damaging to electrical conductivity, completely localizing the electrons in the bi-stripe regions, while the fluctuating stripes can coexist with mobile carriers. This physics drives a novel phase transition with colossal conductivity changes as a function of temperature. Our finding suggests that quantum stripes can give rise to electronic properties significantly different from their static counterparts. Inducing transition between them can turn on remarkable electronic phenomena, enriching our understanding of correlated electron systems as well as opening a window for potential applications in electronic devices.

Reply to "the Comment on `Gauge Invariance and kT-Factorization of Exclusive Processes'"

A new method is proposed to calculate wave functions in $k_T$-factorization in \cite{LiMi} as a comment about our paper \cite{FMW}. We point out that the results obtained with the method are in conflict with the translation invariance and depend on the chosen contours for loop-integrals. Therefore, the method is in principle unacceptable and the results with the method cannot be correct.

Electric Field Enhanced Hydrogen Storage on BN Sheet

Using density functional theory we show that an applied electric field substantially improves the hydrogen storage properties of a BN sheet by polarizing the hydrogen molecules as well as the substrate. The adsorption energy of a single H2 molecule in the presence of an electric field of 0.05 a.u. is 0.48 eV compared to 0.07 eV in its absence. When one layer of H2 molecules is adsorbed, the binding energy per H2 molecule increases from 0.03 eV in the field-free case to 0.14 eV/H2 in the presence of an electric field of 0.045 a.u. The corresponding gravimetric density of 7.5 wt % is consistent with the 6 wt % system target set by DOE for 2010. Once the applied electric field is removed, the stored H2 molecules can be easily released, thus making the storage reversible.

Gauge Invariance and k_T-Factorization of Exclusive Processes

In the $k_T$-factorization for exclusive processes, the nontrivial $k_T$-dependence of perturbative coefficients, or hard parts, is obtained by taking off-shell partons. This brings up the question of whether the $k_T$-factorization is gauge invariant. We study the $k_T$-factorization for the case $πγ^* \to γ$ at one-loop in a general covariant gauge. Our results show that the hard part contains a light-cone singularity that is absent in the Feynman gauge, which indicates that the $k_T$-factorization is {\it not} gauge invariant. These divergent contributions come from the $k_T$-dependent wave function of $π$ and are not related to a special process. Because of this fact the $k_T$-factorization for any process is not gauge invariant and is violated. Our study also indicates that the $k_T$-factorization used widely for exclusive B-decays is not gauge invariant and is violated.

Inconsistences of the k_T-Factorization in Exclusive B-Meson Decays

The k_T-factorization has been widely used for exclusive decays of B-mesons. In this factorization the pertubative coefficients are extracted from scattering of off-shell partons. Because the off-shellness of partons the extracted pertubative coefficients in general are not gauge-invariant. We show that these perturbative coefficients contain gauge-dependent singularities beyond tree-level. This leads to that the k_T-factorization is gauge-dependent and violated in the general covariant gauge. This is not consistent with expectations of physics. In the factorization there exist two different wave functions for a B-meson in general. We show that the two wave functions satisfy different evolution equations whose solutions are used to re-sum large log's. Based on this fact, the rseummation of large log's at leading log approximation in the widely used k_T-factorization with only one wave function is inconsistent.

Resummation of Large Logarithms in $γ^* π^0 \to γ$

In the collinear factorization of the form factor for the transition $γ^* π^0 \to γ$ the hard part contains double log terms as $\ln^2 x$ with $x$ as the momentum fraction of partons from 0 to 1. A simple exponentiation for resummation leads to divergent results. We study the resummation of these $\ln^2 x$ terms. We show that the $\ln^2 x$ terms come partly from the light-cone wave function(LCWF) and partly from the form factor. We introduce a jet factor to factorize the $\ln^2 x$ term in the form factor. To handel the $\ln^2 x$ terms from the LCWF we introduce a nonstandard light-cone wave function(NLCWF) with the gauge links off the light-cone direction. An interesting relation between two wave function is found. With the introduced NLCWF and the jet factor we can re-factorize the form factor and obtain a new hard part which does not contain terms with $\ln^2 x$. Beside the renormalization scale $μ$ the introduce NLCWF and jet factor have extra scales to characterize their $x$-behaviors. Using the evolutions of the extra scales and the relation we can do the resummation perturbatively in sense that the LCWF is the only nonpertubative object in the resumed formula. Our results with some models of LCWF show that there is a significant difference between numerical predictions with the resummation and that without the resummation, and the resummed predictions can describe the experimental data.

Transverse-Momentum Dependent Factorization for gamma^* pi^0 to gamma

With a consistent definition of transverse-momentum dependent (TMD) light-cone wave function, we show that the amplitude for the process $γ^* π^0 \toγ$ can be factorized when the virtuality of the initial photon is large. In contrast to the collinear factorization in which the amplitude is factorized as a convolution of the standard light-cone wave function and a hard part, the TMD factorization yields a convolution of a TMD light-cone wave function, a soft factor and a hard part. We explicitly show that the TMD factorization holds at one loop level. It is expected that the factorization holds beyond one-loop level because the cancelation of soft divergences is on a diagram-by-diagram basis. We also show that the TMD factorization helps to resum large logarithms of type $\ln^2x$.

On Transverse-Momentum Dependent Light-Cone Wave Functions of Light Mesons

Transverse-momentum dependent (TMD) light-cone wave functions of a light meson are important ingredients in the TMD QCD factorization of exclusive processes. This factorization allows one conveniently resum Sudakov logarithms appearing in collinear factorization. The TMD light-cone wave functions are not simply related to the standard light-cone wave functions in collinear factorization by integrating them over the transverse momentum. We explore relations between TMD light-cone wave functions and those in the collinear factorization. Two factorized relations can be found. One is helpful for constructing models for TMD light-cone wave functions, and the other can be used for resummation. These relations will be useful to establish a link between two types of factorization.

Transverse Momentum Dependent Factorization for Radiative Leptonic Decay of B-Meson

With a consistent definition of transverse-momentum-dependent(TMD) light-cone wave function of $B$-meson, we show that the amplitude of the radiative leptonic B-decay can be factorized at one-loop level as a convolution with the wave function and a perturbative coefficient function, combined with a soft factor. In this TMD factorization, the transverse momenta of partons in the $B$-meson are taken into account and all soft divergences are contained in the wave function and the soft factor. The coefficient function is infrared-safe. The factorization works on a diagram-by-diagram basis and is possible to extend beyond one loop. With the factorization the large logarithms in the perturbative function can be simply resummed. Our work shows that the result of collinear factorization for the decay can be derived from that of TMD factorization. Therefore, the two factorizations for the case here are simply related to each other.

Current induced local spin polarization due to the spin-orbit coupling in a two dimensional narrow strip

The current induced local spin polarization due to weak Rashba spin-orbit coupling in narrow strip is studied. In the presence of longitudinal charge current, local spin polarizations appear in the sample. The spin polarization perpendicular to the plane has opposite sign near the two edges. The in-plane spin polarization in the direction perpendicular to the sample edges also appears, but does not change sign across the sample. From our scaling analysis based on increasing the strip width, the out-of-plane spin polarization is important mainly in a system of mesoscopic size, and thus appears not to be associated with the spin-Hall effect in bulk samples.

Transverse Momentum Dependent Light-Cone Wave Function of B-Meson and Relation to the Momentum Integrated One

A direct generalization of the transverse momentum integrated(TMI) light-cone wave function to define a transverse momentum dependent(TMD) light-cone wave function will cause light-cone singularities and they spoil TMD factorization. We motivate a definition in which the light-cone singularities are regularized with non-light like Wilson lines. The defined TMD light-cone wave function has some interesting relations to the corresponding TMI one. When the transverse momentum is very large, the TMD light-cone wave function is determined perturbatively in term of the TMI one. In the impact $b$-space with a small $b$, the TMD light-cone wave function can be factorized in terms of the TMI one. In this letter we study these relations. By-products of our study are the renormalization evolution of the TMI light-cone wave function and the Collins-Soper equation of the TMD light-cone wave function, the later will be useful for resumming Sudakov logarithms.

A General Effective Theory for Dense Quark Matter

A general effective action for quark matter at nonzero temperature and/or nonzero density is derived. Irrelevant quark modes are distinguished from relevant quark modes, and hard from soft gluon modes, by introducing two separate cut-offs in momentum space, one for quarks, $Λ_q$, and one for gluons, $Λ_g$. Irrelevant quark modes and hard gluon modes are then exactly integrated out in the functional integral representation of the QCD partition function. Depending on the specific choice for $Λ_q$ and $Λ_g$, the resulting effective action contains well-known effective actions for hot and/or dense quark matter, for instance the ``Hard Thermal Loop'' (HTL) or the ``Hard Dense Loop'' (HDL) action, as well as the high-density effective theory proposed by Hong and others.

Mixing and Screening of Photons and Gluons in a Color Superconductor

We calculate the Debye and Meissner masses of photons and gluons for a spin-one color superconductor in the polar and color-spin-locked phases as well as for a spin-zero color superconductor in the 2SC and color-flavor-locked phases. A general derivation for photon-gluon mixing is provided in terms of the QCD partition function. We show qualitatively and quantitatively which of the gauge bosons attain a mass via the Anderson-Higgs mechanism. Contrary to the spin-zero phases, both spin-one phases exhibit an electromagnetic Meissner effect.

On Unique Predictions for Single Spin Azimuthal Asymmetry

Theoretically there are two approaches to predict single spin azimuthal asymmetries. One is to take transverse momenta of partons into account by using transverse momentum dependent parton distributions, while another is to take asymmetries as a twist-3 effect. The nonperturbative effects in these approaches are parameterized with different matrix elements and predictions can be different. Recently, gauge invariant definitions of transverse momentum dependent parton distributions were derived. With these definitions it can be shown that there are relations between nonperturbative matrix elements in two approaches. These relations may enable us to unify two approaches and to have unique predictions for single spin azimuthal asymmetries. In this letter we derive these relations by using time-reversal symmetry and show that even with these relations the single spin azimuthal asymmetry in Drell-Yan process is predicted differently in different approaches.

From the Dyson-Schwinger to the Transport Equation in the Background Field Gauge of QCD

The non-equilibrium quantum field dynamics is usually described in the closed-time-path formalism. The initial state correlations are introduced into the generating functional by non-local source terms. We propose a functional approach to the Dyson-Schwinger equation, which treats the non-local and local source terms in the same way. In this approach, the generating functional is formulated for the connected Green functions and one-particle-irreducible vertices. The great advantages of our approach over the widely used two-particle-irreducible method are that it is much simpler and that it is easy to implement the procedure in a computer program to automatically generate the Feynman diagrams for a given process. The method is then applied to a pure gluon plasma to derive the gauge-covariant transport equation from the Dyson-Schwinger equation in the background covariant gauge. We discuss the structure of the kinetic equation and show its relationship with the classical one. We derive the gauge-covariant collision part and present an approximation in the vicinity of equilibrium. The role of the non-local source kernel in the non-equilibrium system is discussed in the context of a free scalar field.

Corrections For Two Photon Decays of chi_{c0} and chi_{c2} and Color Octet Contributions

Using the fact that the c-quark inside a charmonium moves with a small velocity v in the charmonium rest-frame, one can employ an expansion in v to study decays of charmonia and results at the leading order for chi_{c0,2} --> gamma gamma exist in the literature. We study corrections at the next-to-leading order in the framework of nonrelativistic QCD(NRQCD) factorization. The study presented here is different than previous approaches where chi_{c0,2} is taken as a bound-state of a c cbar pair and a nonrelativistic wave-function is used for the pair. We find that the corrections are consist not only of relativistic corrections, but also of corrections from Fock state components of chi_{c0,2} in which the c cbar pair is in a color-octet state. For chi_{c2} there is also a contribution from a Fock state component in which the pair is in a F-wave state. We determine the factorization formula for decay widths in the form of NRQCD matrix elements representing nonperturbative effects related to chi_{c0,2}, and calculate the perturbative coefficients at tree-level. Because the NRQCD matrix elements are unknown, a detailed prediction for the decay chi_{c0,2} --> gamma gamma can not be made, but the effect of these corrections can be determined at certain level. Estimations show that the effect is significant and can not be neglected.

Kinetic Equation for Gluons in the Background Gauge of QCD

We derive the quantum kinetic equation for a pure gluon plasma, applying the background field and closed-time-path method. The derivation is more general and transparent than earlier works. A term in the equation is found which, as in the classical case, corresponds to the color charge precession for partons moving in the gauge field.

Critical exponents of the two-layer Ising model

The symmetric two-layer Ising model (TLIM) is studied by the corner transfer matrix renormalisation group method. The critical points and critical exponents are calculated. It is found that the TLIM belongs to the same universality class as the Ising model. The shift exponent is calculated to be 1.773, which is consistent with the theoretical prediction 1.75 with 1.3% deviation.
