Fast Attention-Based Simplification of LiDAR Point Clouds for Object Detection and Classification

LiDAR point clouds are widely used in autonomous driving and consist of large numbers of 3D points captured at high frequency to represent surrounding objects such as vehicles, pedestrians, and traffic signs. While this dense data enables accurate perception, it also increases computational cost and power consumption, which can limit real-time deployment. Existing point cloud sampling methods typically face a trade-off: very fast approaches tend to reduce accuracy, while more accurate methods are computationally expensive. To address this limitation, we propose an efficient learned point cloud simplification method for LiDAR data. The method combines a feature embedding module with an attention-based sampling module to prioritize task-relevant regions and is trained end-to-end. We evaluate the method against farthest point sampling (FPS) and random sampling (RS) on 3D object detection on the KITTI dataset and on object classification across four datasets. The method was consistently faster than FPS and achieved similar, and in some settings better, accuracy, with the largest gains under aggressive downsampling. It was slower than RS, but it typically preserved accuracy more reliably at high sampling ratios.

Investigations on Cmc2$_1$-Si$_2$P$_2$X structures and physical properties by first-principles calculations

The new structures, Cmc2$_1$-Si$_2$P$_2$X (X=S, Se, Te, and Po), are predicted, and their mechanical, electronic and optical properties are investigated with the density functional theory, by first principles calculations. The elastic constants of the four compounds are calculated by the stress-strain method. The calculations of the elastic stability criteria and phonon dispersion spectra imply that they are mechanically and dynamically stable at zero pressure. The mechanical parameters, such as shear moduli $G$, bulk moduli $B$, Young's moduli $E$ and Poisson's ratios $v$ are evaluated by the Voigt-Reuss-Hill approach. The Cmc2$_1$-Si$_2$P$_2$X has the largest hardness due to the largest Young's modulus in the four compounds, and it is a covalent crystal. The anisotropies of their mechanical properties are also analyzed. The band structures and densities of states, which are calculated by using HSE06, show that Cmc2$_1$-Si$_2$P$_2$X compounds are indirect bandgap semiconductors, and the values of the band gaps decrease with increasing atomic number from S, Se, Te, to Po. In addition, the longitudinal sound velocity and transverse sound velocity for Cmc2$_1$-Si$_2$P$_2$X have been investigated. The dielectric constant, electron energy loss, refractive index, reflectivity, absorption and conductivity are analyzed to gain the optical properties of Si$_2$P$_2$X.

The structural, mechanical, electronic, optical and thermodynamic properties of t-X$_{3}$As$_{4}$ (X $=$ Si, Ge and Sn) by first-principles calculations

The structural, mechanical, electronic, optical and thermodynamic properties of the t-X$_{\mathrm{3}}$As$_{\mathrm{4}}$ (X $=$ Si, Ge and Sn) with tetragonal structure have been investigated by first principles calculations. Our calculated results show that these compounds are mechanically and dynamically stable. By the study of elastic anisotropy, it is found that the anisotropic of the t-Sn$_{\mathrm{3}}$As$_{\mathrm{4}}$ is stronger than that of t-Si$_{\mathrm{3}}$As$_{\mathrm{4}}$ and t-Ge$_{\mathrm{3}}$As$_{\mathrm{4}}$. The band structures and density of states show that the t-X$_{\mathrm{3}}$As$_{\mathrm{4}}$ (Si, Ge and Sn) are semiconductors with narrow band gaps. Based on the analyses of electron density difference, in t-X$_{\mathrm{3}}$As$_{\mathrm{4}}$ As atoms get electrons, X atoms lose electrons. The calculated static dielectric constants, $\varepsilon_{1} (0)$, are 15.5, 20.0 and 15.1 eV for t-X$_{\mathrm{3}}$As$_{\mathrm{4}}$ (X $=$ Si, Ge and Sn), respectively. The Dulong-Petit limit of t-X$_{\mathrm{3}}$As$_{\mathrm{4}}$ is about 10 J mol$^{\mathrm{-1}}$K$^{\mathrm{-1}}$. The thermodynamic stability successively decreases from t-Si$_{\mathrm{3}}$As$_{\mathrm{4}}$ to t-Ge$_{\mathrm{3}}$As$_{\mathrm{4}}$ to t-Sn$_{\mathrm{3}}$As$_{\mathrm{4}}$.

First-principles study of optical, elastic anisotropic and thermodynamic properties of TiN under high temperature and high pressure

The optical, elastic anisotropic and thermodynamic properties of TiN in the NaCl (B1) structure are analyzed in detail in the temperature range from 0 to 2000 K and the pressure range from 0 to 20 GPa. From the calculated dielectric constants, a first order isostructural phase transition between 29 and 30 GPa is found for TiN. The absorption spectra exhibit high values ranging from the far infrared region to the ultra-violet one. The anisotropy value of Young's modulus of TiN is smaller than that of c-BN at 0 GPa and the anisotropy of TiN clearly increases with an increase of pressure. The effects of pressure and temperature on the bulk modulus, Grüneisen parameter, Gibbs free energy, and Debye temperature are significant. The Grüneisen parameter of TiN is much larger than that of c-BN. At temperatures below 1000 K, TiN's heat capacity is much larger than that of c-BN.

Counting Near Infrared Photons with Microwave Kinetic Inductance Detectors

We demonstrate photon counting at 1550 nm wavelength using microwave kinetic inductance detectors (MKIDs) made from TiN/Ti/TiN trilayer films with superconducting transition temperature Tc ~ 1.4 K. The detectors have a lumped-element design with a large interdigitated capacitor (IDC) covered by aluminum and inductive photon absorbers whose volume ranges from 0.4 um^3 to 20 um^3. We find that the energy resolution improves as the absorber volume is reduced. We have achieved an energy resolution of 0.22 eV and resolved up to 7 photons per pulse, both greatly improved from previously reported results at 1550 nm wavelength using MKIDs. Further improvements are possible by optimizing the optical coupling to maximize photon absorption into the inductive absorber.

Aligned copper nanorod arrays for highly efficient generation of intense ultra-broadband THz pulses

We demonstrate an intense broadband terahertz (THz) source based on the interaction of relativistic-intensity femtosecond lasers with aligned copper nanorod array targets. For copper nanorod targets with length 5 μm, a maximum 13.8 times enhancement in the THz pulse energy (in $\leq$ 20 THz spectral range) is measured as compared to that with a thick plane copper target under the same laser conditions. A further increase in the nanorod length leads to a decrease in the THz pulse energy at medium frequencies ($\leq$ 20THz) and increase of the electromagnetic pulse energy in the high-frequency range (from 20 - 200 THz). For the latter, we measure a maximum energy enhancement of 28 times for the nanorod targets of length 60 μm . Particle-in-cell simulations reveal that THz pulses are mostly generated by coherent transition radiation of laser produced hot electrons, which are efficiently enhanced with the use of nanorod targets. Good agreement is found between the simulation and experimental results.

Results from electrostatic calibrations for measuring the Casimir force in the cylinder-plane geometry

We report on measurements performed on an apparatus aimed to study the Casimir force in the cylinder-plane configuration. The electrostatic calibrations evidence anomalous behaviors in the dependence of the electrostatic force and the minimizing potential upon distance. We discuss analogies and differences of these anomalies with respect to those already observed in the sphere-plane configuration. At the smallest explored distances we observe frequency shifts of non-Coulombian nature preventing the measurement of the Casimir force in the same range. We also report on measurement performed in the parallel plane configuration, showing that the dependence on distance of the minimizing potential, if present at all, is milder than in the sphere-plane or cylinder-plane geometries. General considerations on the interplay between the distance-dependent minimizing potential and the precision of Casimir force measurements in the range relevant to detect the thermal corrections for all geometries are finally reported.

Development of an apparatus for cooling 6Li-87Rb Fermi-Bose mixtures in a light-assisted magnetic trap

We describe an experimental setup designed to produce ultracold trapped gas clouds of fermionic 6Li and bosonic 87Rb. This combination of alkali metals has the potential to reach deeper Fermi degeneracy with respect to other mixtures since it allows for improved heat capacity matching which optimizes sympathetic cooling efficiency. Atomic beams of the two species are independently produced and then decelerated by Zeeman slowers. The slowed atoms are collected into a magneto-optical trap and then transferred into a quadrupole magnetic trap. An ultracold Fermi gas with temperature in the 10^-3 T_F range should be attainable through selective confinement of the two species via a properly detuned laser beam focused in the center of the magnetic trap.
