A Piecewise Convexification Method for Non-Convex Multi-Objective Optimization Programs with Box Constraints

This paper presents a piecewise convexification method for solving non-convex multi-objective optimization problems with box constraints. Based on the ideas of the $α$-based Branch and Bound (${\rm αBB}$) method of global optimization and the interval subdivision, a series of convex relaxation sub-multiobjective problems for this non-convex multi-objective optimization problem are firstly obtained, and these sub-problems constitute a piecewise convexification problem of the original problem on the whole box. We then construct the (approximate, weakly) efficient solution set of this piecewise convexification problem, and use these sets to approximate the globally (weakly) efficient solution set of the original problem. Furthermore, we propose a piecewise convexification algorithm and show that this algorithm can also obtain approximate globally efficient solutions by calculating a finite subset of the efficient solution set of the multi-objective convex sub-problems only. Finally, its performance is demonstrated with various test instances.

MoO2/C composites prepared by tartaric acid and glucose-assisted sol-gel processes as anode materials for Lithium-ion batteries

MoO2/C-composites have been fabricated for the first time by a tartaric acid/glucose-assisted sol-gel method with post-annealing at 500 °C for 1 h in N2 flow. The synthesized materials were fully characterized with respect to structure, morphology, and electrochemical properties. Compared with tartaric acid-assisted products, the adoption of glucose as carbon source effectively increases the carbon content in the composites. Irrespective of the organic component, the composites exhibit low crystallinity and small grain size. This results in good electrochemical performance of the anode materials as confirmed for the glucose-assisted materials which after additional post treatment delivers a competitive electrochemical capacity.

Sol-gel synthesis of Li3VO4/C composites as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries

Li3VO4/C composites have been synthesized by a sol-gel method and post-annealing at 650 °C for 1 h in N2 flow using either tartaric acid, malic acid, or glucose as both chelating agents and carbon source. The presence of these organic additives crucially affects morphology and crystallite size of the final product. It is found that the electrochemical properties of Li3VO4/C as anode material for Li-ion batteries (LIBs) are influenced by the morphology, texture and carbon content of the material. When using carboxylic acids as carbon source composites with mesoporous structure and a high surface area are obtained that display an enhanced electrochemical activity. Initially, reversible capacity of about 400 mAh g-1 is obtained. In contrast, Li3VO4/C synthesized with glucose outperforms in terms of cycling stability. It exhibits a discharge capacity of 299 mAh g-1 after 100 cycles corresponding to an excellent capacity retention of 96 %. The favorable effect of carbon composites on the electrochemical performance of Li3VO4 is shown.

A 3D Non-Stationary GBSM for Vehicular Visible Light Communication MISO Channels

The potential of using visible light communication (VLC) technologies for vehicular communication networks has recently attracted much attention. The underlying VLC channels, as a foundation for the proper design and optimization of vehicular VLC communication systems, have not yet been sufficiently investigated. Vehicular VLC link impairments can have a significant impact on the system performance and capacity. Such impairments include the optical wireless channel distortion and background noise. This paper proposes a novel three-dimensional (3D) regular-shaped geometry-based stochastic model (RS-GBSM) for vehicular VLC multiple-input single-output (MISO) channels. The proposed 3D RS-GBSM combines a two-sphere model and an elliptic-cylinder model. Both the line-of-sight (LoS) and single-bounced (SB) components are considered. The proposed model jointly considers the azimuth and elevation angles by using von-Mises-Fisher (VMF) distribution. Based on the proposed model, the relationship between the communication range and the received optical power is analyzed and validated by simulations. The impact of the elevation angle in the 3D model on the received optical power is investigated by comparing with the received optical power of the corresponding two-dimensional (2D) model. Furthermore, the background noise is also modeled to evaluate the system's signal-to-noise ratio (SNR).

Reconfigurable Multi-UAV Formation Using Angle-Encoded PSO

In this paper, we propose an algorithm for the formation of multiple UAVs used in vision-based inspection of infrastructure. A path planning algorithm is first developed by using a variant of the particle swarm optimisation, named theta-PSO, to generate a feasible path for the overall formation configuration taken into account the constraints for visual inspection. Here, we introduced a cost function that includes various constraints on flight safety and visual inspection. A reconfigurable topology is then added based on the use of intermediate waypoints to allow the formation to avoid collision with obstacles during operation. The planned path and formation are then combined to derive the trajectory and velocity profiles for each UAV. Experiments have been conducted for the task of inspecting a light rail bridge. The results confirmed the validity and effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Crack Detection Using Enhanced Thresholding on UAV based Collected Images

This paper proposes a thresholding approach for crack detection in an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) based infrastructure inspection system. The proposed algorithm performs recursively on the intensity histogram of UAV-taken images to exploit their crack-pixels appearing at the low intensity interval. A quantified criterion of interclass contrast is proposed and employed as an object cost and stop condition for the recursive process. Experiments on different datasets show that our algorithm outperforms different segmentation approaches to accurately extract crack features of some commercial buildings.

Enhancement of photovoltaic efficiency by insertion of a polyoxometalate layer at the anode of an organic solar cell

In this article the Wells-Dawson polyoxometalate K6[P2W18O62] is grown as an interfacial layer between indium tin oxide and bulk heterojunction of poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) and [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM). The structure of the POM layers depends on the thickness and shows a highly anisotropic surface organization. The films have been characterized by atomic force microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) to gain insight into their macroscopic organization and better understand their electronic properties. Then, they were put at the anodic interface of a P3HT:PCBM organic solar cell and characterized on an optical bench. The photovoltaic efficiency is discussed in terms of the benefit of the polyoxometalate at the anodic interface of an organic photovoltaic cell.

Grain boundary phases in bcc metals

We report a computational discovery of novel grain boundary structures and multiple grain boundary phases in elemental bcc tungsten. While grain boundary structures created by the γ-surface method as a union of two perfect half crystals have been studied extensively, it is known that the method has limitations and does not always predict the correct ground states. Here, we use a newly developed computational tool, based on evolutionary algorithms, to perform a grand-canonical search of a high-angle symmetric tilt boundary in tungsten, and we find new ground states and multiple phases that cannot be described using the conventional structural unit model. We use MD simulations to demonstrate that the new structures can coexist at finite temperature in a closed system, confirming these are examples of different GB phases. The new ground state is confirmed by first-principles calculations.

Novel magnesium borides and their superconductivity

With the motivation of searching for new superconductors in the Mg-B system, we performed ab initio evolutionary searches for all the stable compounds in this binary system in the pressure range of 0-200 GPa. We found previously unknown, yet thermodynamically stable, compositions MgB$_3$ and Mg$_3$B$_{10}$. Experimentally known MgB$_2$ is stable in the entire pressure range 0-200 GPa, while MgB$_7$ and MgB$_{12}$ are stable at pressures below 90 GPa and 35 GPa, respectively. We predict a reentrant behavior for MgB$_4$, which becomes unstable against decomposition into MgB$_2$ and MgB$_7$ at 4 GPa and then becomes stable above 61 GPa. We find ubiquity of phases with boron sandwich structures analogous to the AlB$_2$-type structure. However, with the exception of MgB$_2$, all other magnesium borides have low electron-phonon coupling constants $λ$ of 0.32 to 0.39 and are predicted to have T$_c$ below 3 K.

Swift follow-up observations of candidate gravitational-wave transient events

We present the first multi-wavelength follow-up observations of two candidate gravitational-wave (GW) transient events recorded by LIGO and Virgo in their 2009-2010 science run. The events were selected with low latency by the network of GW detectors and their candidate sky locations were observed by the Swift observatory. Image transient detection was used to analyze the collected electromagnetic data, which were found to be consistent with background. Off-line analysis of the GW data alone has also established that the selected GW events show no evidence of an astrophysical origin; one of them is consistent with background and the other one was a test, part of a "blind injection challenge". With this work we demonstrate the feasibility of rapid follow-ups of GW transients and establish the sensitivity improvement joint electromagnetic and GW observations could bring. This is a first step toward an electromagnetic follow-up program in the regime of routine detections with the advanced GW instruments expected within this decade. In that regime multi-wavelength observations will play a significant role in completing the astrophysical identification of GW sources. We present the methods and results from this first combined analysis and discuss its implications in terms of sensitivity for the present and future instruments.

Mid-Infrared Photometry and Spectra of Three High Mass Protostellar Candidates at IRAS 18151-1208 and IRAS 20343+4129

We present arcsecond-scale mid-ir photometry (in the 10.5 micron N band and at 24.8 microns), and low resolution spectra in the N band (R~100) of a candidate high mass protostellar object (HMPO) in IRAS 18151-1208 and of two HMPO candidates in IRAS 20343+4129, IRS 1 and IRS 3. In addition we present high resolution mid-ir spectra (R~80000) of the two HMPO candidates in IRAS 20343+4129. These data are fitted with simple models to estimate the masses of gas and dust associated with the mid-ir emitting clumps, the column densities of overlying absorbing dust and gas, the luminosities of the HMPO candidates, and the likely spectral type of the HMPO candidate for which [Ne II] 12.8 micron emission was detected (IRAS 20343+4129 IRS 3). We suggest that IRAS 18151-1208 is a pre-ultracompact HII region HMPO, IRAS 20343+4129 IRS 1 is an embedded young stellar object with the luminosity of a B3 star, and IRAS 20343+4129 IRS 3 is a B2 ZAMS star that has formed an ultracompact HII region and disrupted its natal envelope.

W51 IRS 2: A Massive Jet Emerging from a Molecular Cloud into an H II Region

We have mapped [Ne II] (12.8um) and [S IV] (10.5um) emission from W51 IRS 2 with TEXES on Gemini North, and we compare these data to VLA free-free observations and VLT near-infrared images. With 0.5" spatial and 4 km/s spectral resolution we are able to separate the ionized gas into several components: an extended H II region on the front surface of the molecular cloud, several embedded compact H II regions, and a streamer of high velocity gas. We interpret the high velocity streamer as a precessing or fan-like jet, which has emerged from the molecular cloud into an OB star cluster where it is being ionized.

EMMA - A New Underground Cosmic-Ray Experiment

A new type of cosmic-ray experiment is under construction in the Pyhäsalmi mine in the underground laboratory of the University of Oulu, Finland. It aims to study the composition of cosmic rays at and above the knee region. The experiment, called EMMA, will cover approximately 150 square-metres of detector area. The array is capable of measuring the multiplicity and the lateral distribution of underground muons, and the arrival direction of the air shower. The full-size detector is expected to run by the end of 2007.

R=100,000 Mid-IR Spectroscopy of UCHII Regions: High Resolution is Worth it!

Ultracompact HII regions are signposts of massive star formation and their properties provide diagnostics for the characteristics of very young O stars embedded in molecular clouds. While radio observations have given us a good picture of the morphology of these regions, they have not provided clear information about the kinematics. Using high spectral resolution observations of the 12.8 micron [NeII] line, it has been possible for the first time to trace the internal kinematics of several ultracompact HII regions. We find that the motions in the cometary ultracompact HII regions MonR2 and G29.96-0.02 are highly organized. The velocity patterns are consistent with parabolic ionized flows along a neutral boundary layer.

Kinematics of Ultracompact HII Regions Revealed: High Spectral and Spatial Resolution Mapping of the 12.8 micron [NeII] Line in Monoceros R2

We present the first results of a study of the kinematics and morphology of ultracompact HII regions using a new observational technique. We used very high spatial (1.5") and spectral (3.4 km/s)resolution observations of the [NeII] line at 12.8 microns to study the ionized gas in Monoceros R2. The [NeII] emission shows an HII region with highest emission measure in a ~24" shell. Line widths are as narrow as 8 km/s at some positions. In places where the lines are complex and broader, the additional width is most likely due to overlap of narrower features along the line of sight. The global kinematics suggest that the 24" shell is expanding at ~10 km/s. However, the spectral profiles toward the southeast side of the shell are not consistent with a simple expansion picture.

TEXES: A Sensitive High-Resolution Grating Spectrograph for the Mid-Infrared

We discuss the design and performance of TEXES, the Texas Echelon Cross Echelle Spectrograph. TEXES is a mid-infrared (5-25 um) spectrograph with several operating modes: high-resolution, cross-dispersed with a resolving power of R=100,000, 0.5% spectral coverage, and a ~1.5 by 8" slit; medium-resolution long-slit with R~15,000, 0.5% coverage, and a ~1.5 by 45" slit; low-resolution long-slit with (delta lambda)~0.004 um, 0.25 um coverage, and a ~1.5 by 45" slit; and source acquisition imaging with 0.33" pixels and a 25 by 25" field of view on a 3m telescope. TEXES has been used at the McDonald Observatory 2.7m and the IRTF 3m telescopes, and has proven to be both sensitive and versatile.
