On the effectiveness of local vortex identification criteria in the compressed representation of wall-bounded turbulence

Compressing complex flows into a tangle of vortex filaments is the basic implication of the classical notion of the vortex representation. Various vortex identification criteria have been proposed to extract the vortex filaments from available velocity fields, which is an essential procedure in the practice of the vortex representation. This work focuses on the effectiveness of those identification criteria in the compressed representation of wall-bounded turbulence. Five local identification criteria regarding the vortex strength and three criteria for the vortex axis are considered. To facilitate the comparisons, this work first non-dimensionalize the criteria of the vortex strength based on their dimensions and root mean squares, with corresponding equivalent thresholds prescribed. The optimal definition for the vortex vector is discussed by trialling all the possible combinations of the identification criteria for the vortex strength and the vortex axis. The effectiveness of those criteria in the compressed representation is evaluated based on two principles: (1) efficient compression, which implies the less information required, the better for the representation; (2) accurate decompression, which stresses that the original velocity fields could be reconstructed based on the vortex representation in high accuracy. In practice, the alignment of the identified vortex axis and vortex isosurface, and the accuracy for decompressed velocity fields based on those criteria are quantitatively compared. The alignment degree is described by using the differential geometry method, and the decompressing process is implemented via the two-dimensional field-based linear stochastic estimation. The results of this work provide some reference for the applications of vortex identification criteria in wall-bounded turbulence.

Vortex-to-velocity reconstruction for wall-bounded turbulence via a data-driven model

Modelling the vortex structures and then translating them into the corresponding velocity fields are two essential aspects for the vortex-based modelling works in wall-bounded turbulence. This work develops a datadriven method, which allows an effective reconstruction for the velocity field based on a given vortex field. The vortex field is defined as a vector field by combining the swirl strength and the real eigenvector of the velocity gradient tensor. The distinctive properties for the vortex field are investigated, with the relationship between the vortex magnitude and orientation revealed by the differential geometry. The vortex-to-velocity reconstruction method incorporates the vortex-vortex and vortex-velocity correlation information and derives the inducing model functions under the framework of the linear stochastic estimation. Fast Fourier transformation is employed to improve the computation efficiency in implementation. The reconstruction accuracy is accessed and compared with the widely-used Biot-Savart law. Results show that the method can effectively recover the turbulent motions in a large scale range, which is very promising for the turbulence modelling. The method is also employed to investigate the inducing effects of vortices at different heights, and some revealing results are discussed and linked to the hot research topics in wall-bounded turbulence.

On the Chemical and Kinematic Consistency Between N-rich Metal-poor Field Stars and Enriched Populations in Globular Clusters

Interesting chemically peculiar field stars may reflect their stellar evolution history and their possible origin in a different environment from where they are found now, which is one of the most important research fields in Galactic archaeology. To explore this further, we have used the CN-CH bands around 4000 A to identify N-rich metal-poor field stars in LAMOST DR3. Here we expand our N-rich metal-poor field star sample to ~100 stars in LAMOST DR5, where 53 of them are newly found in this work. We investigate light elements of the common stars between our sample and APOGEE DR14. While Mg, Al, and Si abundances generally agree with the hypothesis that N-rich metal-poor field stars come from enriched populations in globular clusters, it is still inconclusive for C, N, and O. After integrating the orbits of our N-rich field stars and a control sample of normal metal-poor field stars, we find that N-rich field stars have different orbital parameter distributions compared to the control sample, specifically, apocentric distances, maximum vertical amplitude (Zmax), orbital energy, and z direction angular momentum (Lz). The orbital parameters of N-rich field stars indicate that most of them are inner-halo stars. The kinematics of N-rich field stars support their possible GC origin. The spatial and velocity distributions of our bona fide N-rich field star sample are important observational evidence to constrain simulations of the origin of these interesting objects.

Lithium-rich Giants in LAMOST Survey. I. The Catalog

Standard stellar evolution model predicts a severe depletion of lithium (Li) abundance during the first dredge up process (FDU). Yet a small fraction of giant stars are still found to preserve a considerable amount of Li in their atmospheres after the FDU. Those giants are usually identified as Li-rich by a widely used criterion, A(Li) > 1.5 dex. A large number of works dedicated to searching for investigating this minority of the giant family, and the amount of Li-rich giants, has been largely expanded on, especially in the era of big data. In this paper, we present a catalog of Li-rich giants found from the Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) survey with Li abundances derived from a template-matching method developed for LAMOST low-resolution spectra.

Post-processing techniques of 4D flow MRI: velocity and wall shear stress

As the original velocity field obtained from four-dimensional (4D) flow magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contains considerable amount of noises and errors, the available Divergence-free smoothing (DFS) method can be used to process the 4D flow MRI data for reducing noises, eliminating errors, fixing missing data and eventually providing the smoothed flow field. However, the traditional DFS does not have the ability to deal with the flow in the near wall region of vessel, especially for satisfying the no-slip boundary condition. In this study, therefore, an improved DFS method with specific near wall treatment is introduced for processing with 4D flow MRI inner flow with curved wall boundary as the blood flows. On the other hand, due to the coarse resolution of 4D flow MRI, velocity gradients in the near wall region are normally underestimated. As a result, a special wall function is required for accurately computing wall shear stress (WSS).

Uncertainty Quantification for High Dimensional Sparse Nonparametric Additive Models

Statistical inference in high dimensional settings has recently attracted enormous attention within the literature. However, most published work focuses on the parametric linear regression problem. This paper considers an important extension of this problem: statistical inference for high dimensional sparse nonparametric additive models. To be more precise, this paper develops a methodology for constructing a probability density function on the set of all candidate models. This methodology can also be applied to construct confidence intervals for various quantities of interest (such as noise variance) and confidence bands for the additive functions. This methodology is derived using a generalized fiducial inference framework. It is shown that results produced by the proposed methodology enjoy correct asymptotic frequentist properties. Empirical results obtained from numerical experimentation verify this theoretical claim. Lastly, the methodology is applied to a gene expression data set and discovers new findings for which most existing methods based on parametric linear modeling failed to observe.

Computational Investigations of the Lithium Superoxide Dimer Rearrangement on Noisy Quantum Devices

Currently available noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) devices are limited by the number of qubits that can be used for quantum chemistry calculations on molecules. We show herein that the number of qubits required for simulations on a quantum computer can be reduced by limiting the number of orbitals in the active space. Thus, we have utilized ansätze that approximate exact classical matrix eigenvalue decomposition methods (Full Configuration Interaction). Such methods are appropriate for computations with the Variational Quantum Eigensolver algorithm to perform computational investigations on the rearrangement of the lithium superoxide dimer with both quantum simulators and quantum devices. These results demonstrate that, even with a limited orbital active space, quantum simulators are capable of obtaining energy values that are similar to the exact ones. However, calculations on quantum hardware underestimate energies even after the application of readout error mitigation.

Single frame wide-field Nanoscopy based on Ghost Imaging via Sparsity Constraints (GISC Nanoscopy)

The applications of present nanoscopy techniques for live cell imaging are limited by the long sampling time and low emitter density. Here we developed a new single frame wide-field nanoscopy based on ghost imaging via sparsity constraints (GISC Nanoscopy), in which a spatial random phase modulator is applied in a wide-field microscopy to achieve random measurement for fluorescence signals. This new method can effectively utilize the sparsity of fluorescence emitters to dramatically enhance the imaging resolution to 80 nm by compressive sensing (CS) reconstruction for one raw image. The ultra-high emitter density of 143 μm-2 has been achieved while the precision of single-molecule localization below 25 nm has been maintained. Thereby working with high-density of photo-switchable fluorophores GISC nanoscopy can reduce orders of magnitude sampling frames compared with previous single-molecule localization based super-resolution imaging methods.

First Detection of Photons with Energy Beyond 100 TeV from an Astrophysical Source

We report on the highest energy photons from the Crab Nebula observed by the Tibet air shower array with the underground water-Cherenkov-type muon detector array. Based on the criterion of muon number measured in an air shower, we successfully suppress 99.92% of the cosmic-ray background events with energies $E>100$ TeV. As a result, we observed 24 photon-like events with $E>100$ TeV against 5.5 background events, which corresponds to 5.6$σ$ statistical significance. This is the first detection of photons with $E>100$ TeV from an astrophysical source.

High-resolution spectroscopic analysis of a large sample of Li-rich giants found by LAMOST

The discovery of Li-rich giant has cast a new challenge for the standard stellar evolution models, and to resolve this issue, the number of this type object has been rapidly increased because of the development of worldwide surveys these days. Taking advantage of the Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope survey, 44 newly Li-rich giants are reported, which are confirmed with high-resolution observations. Based on the high-resolution and high signal-to-noise spectra, we derived the atmospheric parameters and elemental abundances with the spectral synthesis method. We performed a detailed analysis of their evolutionary stages, infrared excess, projected rotational velocity (v sin i), and the stellar population. We find that (1) The Li-rich giants concentrate at the evolutionary status of the red giant branch bump, red clump, and asymptotic giant branch; (2) Three of them are fast rotators and none exhibit infrared excess. Our results imply that the origins of Li enrichment are most likely to be associated with the extra mixing in the stellar interior, and the external sources maybe only make a minor contribution. Moreover, various Li-rich episodes take place at different evolutionary stages.

Semi-classical analysis with new Galilean transformations for a Gross--Pitaevskii system with non-zero conditions at infinity

Recently, a rich variety of the micro-phenomena of the superfluid passing an obstacle has been observed in the binary mixture of rotating Bose--Einstein condensates (BECs). Among such phenomena, the interaction of dark--bright solitons is one of the most important issues. In this work we investigate the semi-classical limit for a coupled system of Gross--Pitaevskii (GP) equations with rotating fields and trap potentials in a two-dimensional exterior domain, where the superfluid is non-vanishing at infinity. We establish a new Galilean type transformation and follow the argument of the modulated energy functional (a Lyapunov type functional) in \cite{ll08,lz05} to control the propagation of mass densities and linear momenta of the solution via a compressible Euler equation with Coriolis force in a semi-classical regime. Moreover, the effect of the rotating field on the superfluid in the region far away from the obstacle is precisely described.

The nature of the Li enrichment in the most Li-rich giant star

About one percent of giants\upcite{Brown1989} are detected to have anomalously high lithium (Li) abundances in their atmospheres, conflicting directly with the prediction of the standard stellar evolution models\upcite{Iben1967}, and making the production and evolution of Li more intriguing, not only in the sense of the Big Bang nucleosynthesis\upcite{Cyburt2016,Spite1982} or the Galactic medium\upcite{Tajitsu2015}, but also the evolution of stars. Decades of efforts have been put into explaining why such outliers exist\upcite{Sackmann1999, Denissenkov2004, Charbonnel2010}, yet the origins of Li-rich giants are still being debated. Here we report the discovery of the most Li-rich giant known to date, with a super-high Li abundance of 4.51. This rare phenomenon was snapshotted together with another short-term event that the star is experiencing its luminosity bump on the red giant branch. Such high Li abundance indicates that the star might be at the very beginning of its Li-rich phase, which provides a great opportunity to investigate the origin and evolution of Li in the Galaxy. A detailed nuclear simulation is presented with up-to-date reaction rates to recreate the Li enriching process in this star. Our results provide tight constraints on both observational and theoretical points of view, suggesting that low-mass giants can produce Li inside themselves to a super high level via $^{7}$Be transportation during the red giant phase.

Recoil-ion momentum spectroscopy of photoionization of cold rubidium atoms in a strong laser field

We study photoionization of cold rubidium atoms in a strong infrared laser field using a magneto-optical trap (MOT) recoil ion momentum spectrometer. Three types of cold rubidium target are provided, operating in two-dimension (2D) MOT, 2D molasses, and 3D MOT with densities in the orders of $10^7$ atoms/cm$^3$, $10^8$ atoms/cm$^3$, and $10^9$ atoms/cm$^3$, respectively. The density profile and the temperature of 3D MOT are characterized using the absorption imaging and photoionization. The momentum distributions of Rb$^+$ created by absorption of two- or three-photon illuminate a dipole-like double-peak structure, in good agreement with the results in the strong field approximation. The yielding momentum resolution of $0.12 \pm 0.03$ a.u. is achieved in comparison with theoretical calculations, exhibiting the great prospects for the study of electron correlations in alkali metal atoms through interaction with strong laser pulses.

Annotation and Detection of Emotion in Text-based Dialogue Systems with CNN

Knowledge of users' emotion states helps improve human-computer interaction. In this work, we presented EmoNet, an emotion detector of Chinese daily dialogues based on deep convolutional neural networks. In order to maintain the original linguistic features, such as the order, commonly used methods like segmentation and keywords extraction were not adopted, instead we increased the depth of CNN and tried to let CNN learn inner linguistic relationships. Our main contribution is that we presented a new model and a new pipeline which can be used in multi-language environment to solve sentimental problems. Experimental results shows EmoNet has a great capacity in learning the emotion of dialogues and achieves a better result than other state of art detectors do.

Sign-changing solutions for the stationary Kirchhoff problems involving the fractional Laplacian in \mathcal{R}^N

In this paper, we study the existence of least energy sign-changing solutions for a Kirchhoff-type problem involving the fractional Laplacian operator. By using the constraint variational method and quantitative deformation lemma, we obtain a least energy nodal solution ub for the given problem. Moreover, we show that the energy of ub is strictly larger than twice the ground state energy. We also give a convergence property of u_b as b goes to 0, where b is regarded as a parameter.

Performance of new 8-inch photomultiplier tube used for the Tibet muon-detector array

A new hybrid experiment has been constructed to measure the chemical composition of cosmic rays around the "knee" in the wide energy range by the Tibet AS$γ$ collaboration at Tibet, China, since 2014. They consist of a high-energy air-shower-core array (YAC-II), a high-density air-shower array (Tibet-III) and a large underground water-Cherenkov muon-detector array (MD). In order to obtain the primary proton, helium and iron spectra and their "knee" positions in the energy range lower than $10^{16}$ eV, each of PMTs equipped to the MD cell is required to measure the number of photons capable of covering a wide dynamic range of 100 - $10^{6}$ photoelectrons (PEs) according to Monte Carlo simulations. In this paper, we firstly compare the characteristic features between R5912-PMT made by Japan Hamamatsu and CR365-PMT made by Beijing Hamamatsu. This is the first comparison between R5912-PMT and CR365-PMT. If there exists no serious difference, we will then add two 8-inch-in-diameter PMTs to meet our requirements in each MD cell, which are responsible for the range of 100 - 10000 PEs and 2000 - 1000000 PEs, respectively. That is, MD cell is expected to be able to measure the number of muons over 6 orders of magnitude.

Does Offline Political Segregation Affect the Filter Bubble? An Empirical Analysis of Information Diversity for Dutch and Turkish Twitter Users

From a liberal perspective, pluralism and viewpoint diversity are seen as a necessary condition for a well-functioning democracy. Recently, there have been claims that viewpoint diversity is diminishing in online social networks, putting users in a "bubble", where they receive political information which they agree with. The contributions from our investigations are fivefold: (1) we introduce different dimensions of the highly complex value viewpoint diversity using political theory; (2) we provide an overview of the metrics used in the literature of viewpoint diversity analysis; (3) we operationalize new metrics using the theory and provide a framework to analyze viewpoint diversity in Twitter for different political cultures; (4) we share our results for a case study on minorities we performed for Turkish and Dutch Twitter users; (5) we show that minority users cannot reach a large percentage of Turkish Twitter users. With the last of these contributions, using theory from communication scholars and philosophers, we show how minority access is missing from the typical dimensions of viewpoint diversity studied by computer scientists and the impact it has on viewpoint diversity analysis.

Stability of symmetric vortices for two-component Ginzburg-Landau systems

We study Ginzburg-Landau equations for a complex vector order parameter. We consider the Dirichlet problem in the disk in the plane with a symmetric, degree-one boundary condition, and study its stability, in the sense of the spectrum of the second variation of the energy. We find that the stability of the degree-one equivariant solution depends on both the Ginzburg-Landau parameter as well as the sign of the interaction term in the energy.
