Galaxy growth in the concordance $Λ$CDM cosmology

We use galaxy and dark halo data from the public database for the Millennium Simulation to study the growth of galaxies in the De Lucia et al. (2006) model for galaxy formation. Previous work has shown this model to reproduce many aspects of the systematic properties and the clustering of real galaxies, both in the nearby universe and at high redshift. It assumes the stellar masses of galaxies to increase through three processes, major mergers, the accretion of smaller satellite systems, and star formation. We show the relative importance of these three modes to be a strong function of stellar mass and of redshift. Galaxy growth through major mergers depends strongly on stellar mass, but only weakly on redshift. Except for massive systems, minor mergers contribute more to galaxy growth than major mergers at all redshifts and at all stellar masses. For galaxies significantly less massive than the Milky Way, star formation dominates the growth at all epochs. For galaxies significantly more massive than the Milky Way, growth through mergers is the dominant process at all epochs. At a stellar mass of $6\times 10^{10}M_\odot$, star formation dominates at $z>1$ and mergers at later times. At every stellar mass, the growth rates through star formation increase rapidly with increasing redshift. Specific star formation rates are a decreasing function of stellar mass not only at $z=0$ but also at all higher redshifts. For comparison, we carry out a similar analysis of the growth of dark matter halos. In contrast to the galaxies, growth rates depend strongly on redshift, but only weakly on mass. They agree qualitatively with analytic predictions for halo growth.

Short-range interaction of strongly nonlocal spatial optical solitons

A novel phenomenon is discovered that the short-range interaction between strongly nonlocal spatial solitons depends sinusoidally on their phase difference. The two neighbouring solitons at close proximate can be inter-trapped via the strong nonlocality, and propagate together as a whole. The trajectory of the propagation is a straight line with its slope controlled by the phase difference. The experimental results carried out in nematic liquid crystals agree quantitatively with the prediction. Our study suggests that the phenomenon to steer optical beams by controlling the phase difference could be used in all-optical information processing.

Perturbative analysis of generally nonlocal spatial optical solitons

In analogy to a perturbed harmonic oscillator, we calculate the fundamental and some other higher order soliton solutions of the nonlocal nonlinear Schroedinger equation (NNLSE) in the second approximation in the generally nonlocal case. Comparing with numerical simulations we show that soliton solutions in the 2nd approximation can describe the generally nonlocal soliton states of the NNLSE more exactly than that in the zeroth approximation. We show that for the nonlocal case of an exponential-decay type nonlocal response the Gaussian-function-like soliton solutions can't describe the nonlocal soliton states exactly even in the strongly nonlocal case. The properties of such nonlocal solitons are investigated. In the strongly nonlocal limit, the soliton's power and phase constant are both in inverse proportion to the 4th power of its beam width for the nonlocal case of a Gaussian function type nonlocal response, and are both in inverse proportion to the 3th power of its beam width for the nonlocal case of an exponential-decay type nonlocal response.

Nonlocality-controlled interaction of spatial solitons in nematic liquid crystals

We demonstrate experimentally that the interactions between a pair of nonlocal spatial optical solitons in a nematic liquid crystal (NLC) can be controlled by the degree of nonlocality. For a given beam width, the degree of nonlocality can be modulated by varying the pretilt angle of NLC molecules via the change of the bias. When the pretilt angle is smaller than pi/4, the nonlocality is strong enough to guarantee the independence of the interactions on the phase difference of the solitons. As the pretilt angle increases, the degree of nonlocality decreases. When the degree is below its critical value, the two solitons behavior in the way like their local counterpart: the two in-phase solitons attract and the two out-of-phase solitons repulse.

Classification of Cosmological Trajectories

In the context of effective Friedmann equation we classify the cosmologies in multi-scalar models with an arbitrary scalar potential $V$ according to their geometric properties. It is shown that all flat cosmologies are geodesics with respect to a conformally rescaled metric on the `augmented' target space. Non-flat cosmologies with V=0 are also investigated. It is shown that geodesics in a `doubly-augmented' target space yield cosmological trajectories for any curvature $k$ when projected onto a given hypersurface.

Friedmann cosmology on codimension 2 brane with time dependent tension

A solution of codimension 2 brane is found for which 4 dimensional Friedmann cosmology is recovered on the brane with time dependent tension, in the Einstein frame. The effective parameter $p/ρ$ of equation of state on the brane can be quintessence like, de Sitter like or phantom like, depending on integration constants of the solution.

Gauss-Bonnet Black Holes in dS Spaces

We study the thermodynamic properties associated with black hole horizon and cosmological horizon for the Gauss-Bonnet solution in de Sitter space. When the Gauss-Bonnet coefficient is positive, a locally stable small black hole appears in the case of spacetime dimension $d=5$, the stable small black hole disappears and the Gauss-Bonnet black hole is always unstable quantum mechanically when $d \ge 6$. On the other hand, the cosmological horizon is found always locally stable independent of the spacetime dimension. But the solution is not globally preferred, instead the pure de Sitter space is globally preferred. When the Gauss-Bonnet coefficient is negative, there is a constraint on the value of the coefficient, beyond which the gravity theory is not well defined. As a result, there is not only an upper bound on the size of black hole horizon radius at which the black hole horizon and cosmological horizon coincide with each other, but also a lower bound depending on the Gauss-Bonnet coefficient and spacetime dimension. Within the physical phase space, the black hole horizon is always thermodynamically unstable and the cosmological horizon is always stable, further, as the case of the positive coefficient, the pure de Sitter space is still globally preferred. This result is consistent with the argument that the pure de Sitter space corresponds to an UV fixed point of dual field theory.
