Contribution Evaluation of Heterogeneous Participants in Federated Learning via Prototypical Representations

Contribution evaluation in federated learning (FL) has become a pivotal research area due to its applicability across various domains, such as detecting low-quality datasets, enhancing model robustness, and designing incentive mechanisms. Existing contribution evaluation methods, which primarily rely on data volume, model similarity, and auxiliary test datasets, have shown success in diverse scenarios. However, their effectiveness often diminishes due to the heterogeneity of data distributions, presenting a significant challenge to their applicability. In response, this paper explores contribution evaluation in FL from an entirely new perspective of representation. In this work, we propose a new method for the contribution evaluation of heterogeneous participants in federated learning (FLCE), which introduces a novel indicator \emph{class contribution momentum} to conduct refined contribution evaluation. Our core idea is the construction and application of the class contribution momentum indicator from individual, relative, and holistic perspectives, thereby achieving an effective and efficient contribution evaluation of heterogeneous participants without relying on an auxiliary test dataset. Extensive experimental results demonstrate the superiority of our method in terms of fidelity, effectiveness, efficiency, and heterogeneity across various scenarios.

CT-Bound: Robust Boundary Detection From Noisy Images Via Hybrid Convolution and Transformer Neural Networks

We present CT-Bound, a robust and fast boundary detection method for very noisy images using a hybrid Convolution and Transformer neural network. The proposed architecture decomposes boundary estimation into two tasks: local detection and global regularization. During the local detection, the model uses a convolutional architecture to predict the boundary structure of each image patch in the form of a pre-defined local boundary representation, the field-of-junctions (FoJ). Then, it uses a feed-forward transformer architecture to globally refine the boundary structures of each patch to generate an edge map and a smoothed color map simultaneously. Our quantitative analysis shows that CT-Bound outperforms the previous best algorithms in edge detection on very noisy images. It also increases the edge detection accuracy of FoJ-based methods while having a 3-time speed improvement. Finally, we demonstrate that CT-Bound can produce boundary and color maps on real captured images without extra fine-tuning and real-time boundary map and color map videos at ten frames per second.

Unlearnable Examples for Diffusion Models: Protect Data from Unauthorized Exploitation

Diffusion models have demonstrated remarkable performance in image generation tasks, paving the way for powerful AIGC applications. However, these widely-used generative models can also raise security and privacy concerns, such as copyright infringement, and sensitive data leakage. To tackle these issues, we propose a method, Unlearnable Diffusion Perturbation, to safeguard images from unauthorized exploitation. Our approach involves designing an algorithm to generate sample-wise perturbation noise for each image to be protected. This imperceptible protective noise makes the data almost unlearnable for diffusion models, i.e., diffusion models trained or fine-tuned on the protected data cannot generate high-quality and diverse images related to the protected training data. Theoretically, we frame this as a max-min optimization problem and introduce EUDP, a noise scheduler-based method to enhance the effectiveness of the protective noise. We evaluate our methods on both Denoising Diffusion Probabilistic Model and Latent Diffusion Models, demonstrating that training diffusion models on the protected data lead to a significant reduction in the quality of the generated images. Especially, the experimental results on Stable Diffusion demonstrate that our method effectively safeguards images from being used to train Diffusion Models in various tasks, such as training specific objects and styles. This achievement holds significant importance in real-world scenarios, as it contributes to the protection of privacy and copyright against AI-generated content.

Can Protective Perturbation Safeguard Personal Data from Being Exploited by Stable Diffusion?

Stable Diffusion has established itself as a foundation model in generative AI artistic applications, receiving widespread research and application. Some recent fine-tuning methods have made it feasible for individuals to implant personalized concepts onto the basic Stable Diffusion model with minimal computational costs on small datasets. However, these innovations have also given rise to issues like facial privacy forgery and artistic copyright infringement. In recent studies, researchers have explored the addition of imperceptible adversarial perturbations to images to prevent potential unauthorized exploitation and infringements when personal data is used for fine-tuning Stable Diffusion. Although these studies have demonstrated the ability to protect images, it is essential to consider that these methods may not be entirely applicable in real-world scenarios. In this paper, we systematically evaluate the use of perturbations to protect images within a practical threat model. The results suggest that these approaches may not be sufficient to safeguard image privacy and copyright effectively. Furthermore, we introduce a purification method capable of removing protected perturbations while preserving the original image structure to the greatest extent possible. Experiments reveal that Stable Diffusion can effectively learn from purified images over all protective methods.

Cosmological Forecast of the Void Size Function Measurement from the CSST Spectroscopic Survey

Void size function (VSF) contains information of the cosmic large-scale structure (LSS), and can be used to derive the properties of dark energy and dark matter. We predict the VSFs measured from the spectroscopic galaxy survey operated by the China Space Station Telescope (CSST), and study the strength of cosmological constraint. We employ a high-resolution Jiutian simulation to get CSST galaxy mock samples based on an improved semi-analytical model. We identify voids from this galaxy catalog using the watershed algorithm without assuming a spherical shape, and estimate the VSFs at different redshift bins from $z=0.5$ to 1.1. We propose a void selection method based on the ellipticity, and assume the void linear underdensity threshold $δ_{\rm v}$ in the theoretical model is redshift-dependent and set it as a free parameter in each redshift bin. The Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method is adopted to implement the constraints on the cosmological and void parameters. We find that the CSST VSF measurement can constrain the cosmological parameters to a few percent level. The best-fit values of $δ_{\rm v}$ are ranging from $\sim-0.4$ to $-0.1$ as the redshift increases from 0.5 to 1.1, which has a distinct difference from the theoretical calculation with $δ_{\rm v}\simeq-2.7$ assuming the spherical evolution and using particles as tracer. Our method can provide a good reference for void identification and selection in the VSF analysis of the spectroscopic galaxy surveys.

AutoSurvey: Large Language Models Can Automatically Write Surveys

This paper introduces AutoSurvey, a speedy and well-organized methodology for automating the creation of comprehensive literature surveys in rapidly evolving fields like artificial intelligence. Traditional survey paper creation faces challenges due to the vast volume and complexity of information, prompting the need for efficient survey methods. While large language models (LLMs) offer promise in automating this process, challenges such as context window limitations, parametric knowledge constraints, and the lack of evaluation benchmarks remain. AutoSurvey addresses these challenges through a systematic approach that involves initial retrieval and outline generation, subsection drafting by specialized LLMs, integration and refinement, and rigorous evaluation and iteration. Our contributions include a comprehensive solution to the survey problem, a reliable evaluation method, and experimental validation demonstrating AutoSurvey's effectiveness. We open our resources at \url{https://github.com/AutoSurveys/AutoSurvey}.

Prompt-based Visual Alignment for Zero-shot Policy Transfer

Overfitting in RL has become one of the main obstacles to applications in reinforcement learning(RL). Existing methods do not provide explicit semantic constrain for the feature extractor, hindering the agent from learning a unified cross-domain representation and resulting in performance degradation on unseen domains. Besides, abundant data from multiple domains are needed. To address these issues, in this work, we propose prompt-based visual alignment (PVA), a robust framework to mitigate the detrimental domain bias in the image for zero-shot policy transfer. Inspired that Visual-Language Model (VLM) can serve as a bridge to connect both text space and image space, we leverage the semantic information contained in a text sequence as an explicit constraint to train a visual aligner. Thus, the visual aligner can map images from multiple domains to a unified domain and achieve good generalization performance. To better depict semantic information, prompt tuning is applied to learn a sequence of learnable tokens. With explicit constraints of semantic information, PVA can learn unified cross-domain representation under limited access to cross-domain data and achieves great zero-shot generalization ability in unseen domains. We verify PVA on a vision-based autonomous driving task with CARLA simulator. Experiments show that the agent generalizes well on unseen domains under limited access to multi-domain data.

JWST's first glimpse of a z > 2 forming cluster reveals a top-heavy stellar mass function

Clusters and their progenitors (protoclusters) at z = 2-4, the peak epoch of star formation, are ideal laboratories to study the formation process of both the clusters themselves and their member galaxies. However, a complete census of their member galaxies has been challenging due to observational difficulties. Here we present new JWST/NIRCam observations targeting the distant cluster CLJ1001 at z = 2.51 from the COSMOS-Web program, which, in combination with previous narrowband imaging targeting H-alpha emitters and deep millimeter surveys of CO emitters, provide a complete view of massive galaxy assembly in CLJ1001. In particular, JWST reveals a population of massive, extremely red cluster members in the long-wavelength bands that were invisible in previous Hubble Space Telescope (HST)/F160W imaging (HST-dark members). Based on this highly complete spectroscopic sample of member galaxies, we show that the spatial distribution of galaxies in CLJ1001 exhibits a strong central concentration, with the central galaxy density already resembling that of low-z clusters. Moreover, we reveal a "top-heavy" stellar mass function for the star-forming galaxies (SFGs), with an overabundance of massive SFGs piled up in the cluster core. These features strongly suggest that CLJ1001 is caught in a rapid transition, with many of its massive SFGs likely soon becoming quiescent. In the context of cluster formation, these findings suggest that the earliest clusters form from the inside out and top to bottom, with the massive galaxies in the core assembling first, followed by the less massive ones in the outskirts.

Effectiveness of halo and galaxy properties in reducing the scatter in the stellar-to-halo mass relation

The stellar-to-halo mass relation (SHMR) is a fundamental relationship between galaxies and their host dark matter haloes. In this study, we examine the scatter in this relation for primary galaxies in the semi-analytic L-Galaxies model and two cosmological hydrodynamical simulations, \eagle{} and \tng{}. We find that in low-mass haloes, more massive galaxies tend to reside in haloes with higher concentration, earlier formation time, greater environmental density, earlier major mergers, and, to have older stellar populations, which is consistent with findings in various studies. Quantitative analysis reveals the varying significance of halo and galaxy properties in determining SHMR scatter across simulations and models. In \eagle{} and \tng{}, halo concentration and formation time primarily influence SHMR scatter for haloes with $M_{\rm h}<10^{12}~\rm M_\odot$, but the influence diminishes at high mass. Baryonic processes play a more significant role in \lgal{}. For halos with $M_{\rm h} <10^{11}~\rm M_\odot$ and $10^{12}~\rm M_\odot 10^{13}~\rm M_\odot$, supermassive black hole mass becomes more important. Interestingly, it is found that AGN feedback may increase the amplitude of the scatter and decrease the dependence on halo properties at high masses.

Luban: Building Open-Ended Creative Agents via Autonomous Embodied Verification

Building open agents has always been the ultimate goal in AI research, and creative agents are the more enticing. Existing LLM agents excel at long-horizon tasks with well-defined goals (e.g., `mine diamonds' in Minecraft). However, they encounter difficulties on creative tasks with open goals and abstract criteria due to the inability to bridge the gap between them, thus lacking feedback for self-improvement in solving the task. In this work, we introduce autonomous embodied verification techniques for agents to fill the gap, laying the groundwork for creative tasks. Specifically, we propose the Luban agent target creative building tasks in Minecraft, which equips with two-level autonomous embodied verification inspired by human design practices: (1) visual verification of 3D structural speculates, which comes from agent synthesized CAD modeling programs; (2) pragmatic verification of the creation by generating and verifying environment-relevant functionality programs based on the abstract criteria. Extensive multi-dimensional human studies and Elo ratings show that the Luban completes diverse creative building tasks in our proposed benchmark and outperforms other baselines ($33\%$ to $100\%$) in both visualization and pragmatism. Additional demos on the real-world robotic arm show the creation potential of the Luban in the physical world.

PerLLM: Personalized Inference Scheduling with Edge-Cloud Collaboration for Diverse LLM Services

With the rapid growth in the number of large language model (LLM) users, it is difficult for bandwidth-constrained cloud servers to simultaneously process massive LLM services in real-time. Recently, edge-cloud infrastructures have been used to improve the processing efficiency of large-scale LLM services. However, the diversity of task requirements and the dynamics of resources pose great challenges to inference scheduling, leading to the wastage of many resources. In this paper, we present PerLLM, a personalized inference scheduling framework with edge-cloud collaboration designed for diverse LLM services. For the complexity of multiple constraints and the decision-making process of edge-cloud collaboration, we integrate the upper confidence bound algorithm based on the constraint satisfaction mechanism in PerLLM. For diverse LLM services, PerLLM can optimize service scheduling and resource allocation solutions within the edge-cloud infrastructure to meet processing time requirements while minimizing energy costs. Experimental results from different model deployments show that PerLLM can effectively meet the processing time requirements of personalized services. Compared to other methods, PerLLM achieves 2.2x, 2.1x, and 1.6x throughput and reduces the energy cost by more than 50%.

Stepwise ionization of Mo$^{14+}$ ions in EBIT: The importance of the metastable level

The visible spectrum of Mo$^{15+}$ ions was measured using a high-temperature superconducting electron-beam ion trap at the Shanghai EBIT Laboratory, with an electron beam energy $E_{e}$=400 eV, significantly lower than the ionization potential (IP=544.0 eV) of Mo$^{14+}$ ions in the ground state. To expound on the experiment, the energy level structure, radiative transition properties, electron-impact excitation, and electron-impact ionization cross section for both the ground state and low-lying excited state of the Mo$^{14+}$ ions were calculated using Dirac-Fock-Slater method with a local central potential and distorted wave approximation. The results demonstrated reasonable agreement with both available experimental and theoretical data. Through an analysis of the related atomic processes of Mo$^{14+}$ ion, a scenario involving the stepwise ionization of the metastable state 3p$^{6}$3d$^{9}$4s was proposed to explain the presence of the Mo$^{15+}$ ions with a lower energy of the incident electron. Finally, the significance of the metastable levels in ionizing Mo$^{14+}$ ions is highlighted.

Polarized radio emission of RRAT J1854+0306

Polarized radio emission of RRAT J1854+0306 is investigated with single pulses using Five-hundred-meter-Aperture Spherical Telescope. Its emission is characterized by nulls, narrow and weak pulses, and occasional wide and intense bursts with a nulling fraction of 53.2%. Its burst emission is typically of one rotation, and occasionally of two or three or even five rotations at the most, but without significant periodicity. The integrated pulse profile has an 'S'-shaped position angle curve that is superposed with orthogonal modes, from which geometry parameters are obtained. Individual pulses exhibit diverse profile morphology with single, double, or multiple peaks. The intensity and width of these pulses are highly correlated, and bright pulses generally have wide profiles with multiple peaks. These nulling behaviours, profile morphology, and polarization demonstrate that a rotating radio transient has the same physical origins as the normal pulsars.

CSST Strong Lensing Preparation: a Framework for Detecting Strong Lenses in the Multi-color Imaging Survey by the China Survey Space Telescope (CSST)

Strong gravitational lensing is a powerful tool for investigating dark matter and dark energy properties. With the advent of large-scale sky surveys, we can discover strong lensing systems on an unprecedented scale, which requires efficient tools to extract them from billions of astronomical objects. The existing mainstream lens-finding tools are based on machine learning algorithms and applied to cut-out-centered galaxies. However, according to the design and survey strategy of optical surveys by CSST, preparing cutouts with multiple bands requires considerable efforts. To overcome these challenges, we have developed a framework based on a hierarchical visual Transformer with a sliding window technique to search for strong lensing systems within entire images. Moreover, given that multi-color images of strong lensing systems can provide insights into their physical characteristics, our framework is specifically crafted to identify strong lensing systems in images with any number of channels. As evaluated using CSST mock data based on an Semi-Analytic Model named CosmoDC2, our framework achieves precision and recall rates of 0.98 and 0.90, respectively. To evaluate the effectiveness of our method in real observations, we have applied it to a subset of images from the DESI Legacy Imaging Surveys and media images from Euclid Early Release Observations. 61 new strong lensing system candidates are discovered by our method. However, we also identified false positives arising primarily from the simplified galaxy morphology assumptions within the simulation. This underscores the practical limitations of our approach while simultaneously highlighting potential avenues for future improvements.

FT2Ra: A Fine-Tuning-Inspired Approach to Retrieval-Augmented Code Completion

The rise of code pre-trained models has significantly enhanced various coding tasks, such as code completion, and tools like GitHub Copilot. However, the substantial size of these models, especially large models, poses a significant challenge when it comes to fine-tuning them for specific downstream tasks. As an alternative approach, retrieval-based methods have emerged as a promising solution, augmenting model predictions without the need for fine-tuning. Despite their potential, a significant challenge is that the designs of these methods often rely on heuristics, leaving critical questions about what information should be stored or retrieved and how to interpolate such information for augmenting predictions. To tackle this challenge, we first perform a theoretical analysis of the fine-tuning process, highlighting the importance of delta logits as a catalyst for improving model predictions. Building on this insight, we develop a novel retrieval-based method, FT2Ra, which aims to mimic genuine fine-tuning. While FT2Ra adopts a retrieval-based mechanism, it uniquely adopts a paradigm with a learning rate and multi-epoch retrievals, which is similar to fine-tuning.In token-level completion, which represents a relatively easier task, FT2Ra achieves a 4.29% improvement in accuracy compared to the best baseline method on UniXcoder. In the more challenging line-level completion task, we observe a substantial more than twice increase in Exact Match (EM) performance, indicating the significant advantages of our theoretical analysis. Notably, even when operating without actual fine-tuning, FT2Ra exhibits competitive performance compared to the models with real fine-tuning.

Gas-rich Ultra-diffuse Galaxies Are Originated from High Specific Angular Momentum

Ultra-diffuse galaxies, characterized by comparable effective radii to the Milky Way but possessing 100-1,000 times fewer stars, offer a unique opportunity to garner novel insights into the mechanisms governing galaxy formation. Nevertheless, the existing corpus of observational and simulation studies has not yet yielded a definitive constraint or comprehensive consensus on the formation mechanisms underlying ultra-diffuse galaxies. In this study, we delve into the properties of ultra-diffuse galaxies enriched with neutral hydrogen using a semi-analytic method, with the explicit aim of constraining existing ultra-diffuse galaxy formation models. We find that the gas-rich ultra-diffuse galaxies are statistically not failed $L^{\star}$ galaxies nor dark matter deficient galaxies. In statistical terms, these ultra-diffuse galaxies exhibit comparable halo concentration, but higher baryonic mass fraction, as well as higher stellar and gas specific angular momentum, in comparison to typical dwarf galaxy counterparts. Our analysis unveils that higher gas specific angular momentum serves as the underlying factor elucidating the observed heightened baryonic mass fractions, diminished star formation efficiency, expanded stellar disk sizes, and reduced stellar densities in ultra-diffuse galaxies. Our findings make significant contributions to advancing our knowledge of ultra-diffuse galaxy formation and shed light on the intricate interplay between gas dynamics and the evolution of galaxies.

Simulating emission line galaxies for the next generation of large-scale structure surveys

We investigate emission line galaxies across cosmic time by combining the modified L-Galaxies semi-analytical galaxy formation model with the JiuTian cosmological simulation. We improve the tidal disruption model of satellite galaxies in L-Galaxies to address the time dependence problem. We utilise the public code CLOUDY to compute emission line ratios for a grid of HII region models. The emission line models assume the same initial mass function as that used to generate the spectral energy distribution of semi-analytical galaxies, ensuring a coherent treatment for modelling the full galaxy spectrum. By incorporating these emission line ratios with galaxy properties, we reproduce observed luminosity functions for H$α$, H$β$, [OII], and [OIII] in the local Universe and at high redshifts. We also find good agreement between model predictions and observations for auto-correlation and cross-correlation functions of [OII]-selected galaxies, as well as their luminosity dependence. The bias of emission line galaxies depends on both luminosity and redshift. At lower redshifts, it remains constant with increasing luminosity up to around $\sim 10^{42.5}\rm \, erg\,s^{-1}$ and then rises steeply for higher luminosities. The transition luminosity increases with redshift and becomes insignificant above $z$=1.5. Generally, galaxy bias shows an increasing trend with redshift. However, for luminous galaxies, the bias is higher at low redshifts, as the strong luminosity dependence observed at low redshifts diminishes at higher redshifts. We provide a fitting formula for the bias of emission line galaxies as a function of luminosity and redshift, which can be utilised for large-scale structure studies with future galaxy surveys.

Generative Quanta Color Imaging

The astonishing development of single-photon cameras has created an unprecedented opportunity for scientific and industrial imaging. However, the high data throughput generated by these 1-bit sensors creates a significant bottleneck for low-power applications. In this paper, we explore the possibility of generating a color image from a single binary frame of a single-photon camera. We evidently find this problem being particularly difficult to standard colorization approaches due to the substantial degree of exposure variation. The core innovation of our paper is an exposure synthesis model framed under a neural ordinary differential equation (Neural ODE) that allows us to generate a continuum of exposures from a single observation. This innovation ensures consistent exposure in binary images that colorizers take on, resulting in notably enhanced colorization. We demonstrate applications of the method in single-image and burst colorization and show superior generative performance over baselines. Project website can be found at https://vishal-s-p.github.io/projects/2023/generative_quanta_color.html.
