MugenNet: A Novel Combined Convolution Neural Network and Transformer Network with its Application for Colonic Polyp Image Segmentation

Biomedical image segmentation is a very important part in disease diagnosis. The term "colonic polyps" refers to polypoid lesions that occur on the surface of the colonic mucosa within the intestinal lumen. In clinical practice, early detection of polyps is conducted through colonoscopy examinations and biomedical image processing. Therefore, the accurate polyp image segmentation is of great significance in colonoscopy examinations. Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) is a common automatic segmentation method, but its main disadvantage is the long training time. Transformer utilizes a self-attention mechanism, which essentially assigns different importance weights to each piece of information, thus achieving high computational efficiency during segmentation. However, a potential drawback is the risk of information loss. In the study reported in this paper, based on the well-known hybridization principle, we proposed a method to combine CNN and Transformer to retain the strengths of both, and we applied this method to build a system called MugenNet for colonic polyp image segmentation. We conducted a comprehensive experiment to compare MugenNet with other CNN models on five publicly available datasets. The ablation experiment on MugentNet was conducted as well. The experimental results show that MugenNet achieves significantly higher processing speed and accuracy compared with CNN alone. The generalized implication with our work is a method to optimally combine two complimentary methods of machine learning.

PyroTrack: Belief-Based Deep Reinforcement Learning Path Planning for Aerial Wildfire Monitoring in Partially Observable Environments

Motivated by agility, 3D mobility, and low-risk operation compared to human-operated management systems of autonomous unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), this work studies UAV-based active wildfire monitoring where a UAV detects fire incidents in remote areas and tracks the fire frontline. A UAV path planning solution is proposed considering realistic wildfire management missions, where a single low-altitude drone with limited power and flight time is available. Noting the limited field of view of commercial low-altitude UAVs, the problem formulates as a partially observable Markov decision process (POMDP), in which wildfire progression outside the field of view causes inaccurate state representation that prevents the UAV from finding the optimal path to track the fire front in limited time. Common deep reinforcement learning (DRL)-based trajectory planning solutions require diverse drone-recorded wildfire data to generalize pre-trained models to real-time systems, which is not currently available at a diverse and standard scale. To narrow down the gap caused by partial observability in the space of possible policies, a belief-based state representation with broad, extensive simulated data is proposed where the beliefs (i.e., ignition probabilities of different grid areas) are updated using a Bayesian framework for the cells within the field of view. The performance of the proposed solution in terms of the ratio of detected fire cells and monitored ignited area (MIA) is evaluated in a complex fire scenario with multiple rapidly growing fire batches, indicating that the belief state representation outperforms the observation state representation both in fire coverage and the distance to fire frontline.

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces for THz: Hardware Impairments and Switching Technologies

The demand for unprecedented performance in the upcoming 6G wireless networks is fomenting the research on THz communications empowered by Reconfigurable Inteligent Surfaces (RISs). A wide range of use cases have been proposed, most of them, assuming high-level RIS models that overlook some of the hardware impairments that this technology faces. The expectation is that the emergent reconfigurable THz technologies will eventually overcome its current limitations. This disassociation from the hardware may mask nonphysical assumptions, perceived as hardware limitations. In this paper, a top-down approach bounded by physical constraints is presented, distilling from system-level specifications, hardware requirements, and upper bounds for the RIS-aided system performance. We consider D-band indoor and outdoor scenarios where a more realistic assessment of the state-of-the-art solution can be made. The goal is to highlight the intricacies of the design procedure based on sound assumptions for the RIS performance. For a given signal range and angular coverage, we quantify the required RIS size, number of switching elements, and maximum achievable bandwidth and capacity.

$1$-Bit SubTHz RIS with Planar Tightly Coupled Dipoles: Beam Shaping and Prototypes

In this paper, a proof-of-concept study of a $1$-bit wideband reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) comprising planar tightly coupled dipoles (PTCD) is presented. The developed RIS operates at subTHz frequencies and a $3$-dB gain bandwidth of $27.4\%$ with the center frequency at $102$ GHz is shown to be obtainable via full-wave electromagnetic simulations. The binary phase shift offered by each RIS unit element is enabled by changing the polarization of the reflected wave by $180^\circ$. The proposed PTCD-based RIS has a planar configuration with one dielectric layer bonded to a ground plane, and hence, it can be fabricated by using cost-effective printed circuit board (PCB) technology. We analytically calculate the response of the entire designed RIS and showcase that a good agreement between that result and equivalent full-wave simulations is obtained. To efficiently compute the $1$-bit RIS response for different pointing directions, thus, designing a directive beam codebook, we devise a fast approximate beamforming optimization approach, which is compared with time-consuming full-wave simulations. Finally, to prove our concept, we present several passive prototypes with frozen beams for the proposed $1$-bit wideband RIS.

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces for THz: Hardware Design and Signal Processing Challenges

Wireless communications in the THz frequency band is an envisioned revolutionary technology for sixth Generation (6G) networks. However, such frequencies impose certain coverage and device design challenges that need to be efficiently overcome. To this end, the development of cost- and energy-efficient approaches for scaling these networks to realistic scenarios constitute a necessity. Among the recent research trends contributing to these objectives belongs the technology of Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RISs). In fact, several high-level descriptions of THz systems based on RISs have been populating the literature. Nevertheless, hardware implementations of those systems are still very scarce, and not at the scale intended for most envisioned THz scenarios. In this paper, we overview some of the most significant hardware design and signal processing challenges with THz RISs, and present a preliminary analysis of their impact on the overall link budget and system performance, conducted in the framework of the ongoing TERRAMETA project.

Distribution of neighboring values of the Liouville and Möbius functions

Let $λ(n)$ and $μ(n)$ denote the Liouville function and the Möbius function, respectively. In this study, relationships between the values of $λ(n)$ and $λ(n+h)$ up to $n\leq10^8$ for $1\leq h\leq1,000$ are explored. Chowla's conjecture predicts that the conditional expectation of $λ(n+h)$ given $λ(n)=1$ for $1\leq n\leq X$ converges to the conditional expectation of $λ(n+h)$ given $λ(n)=-1$ for $1\leq n\leq X$ as $X\rightarrow\infty$. However, for finite $X$, these conditional expectations are different. The observed difference, together with the significant difference in $χ^2$ tests of independence, reveals hidden additive properties among the values of the Liouville function. Similarly, such additive structures for $μ(n)$ for square-free $n$'s are identified. These findings pave the way for developing possible, and hopefully efficient, additive algorithms for these functions. The potential existence of fast, additive algorithms for $λ(n)$ and $μ(n)$ may eventually provide scientific evidence supporting the belief that prime factorization of large integers should not be too difficult. For $1\leq h\leq1,000$, the study also tested the convergence speeds of Chowla's conjecture and found no relation on $h$.

Low-rank Adaptation of Large Language Model Rescoring for Parameter-Efficient Speech Recognition

We propose a neural language modeling system based on low-rank adaptation (LoRA) for speech recognition output rescoring. Although pretrained language models (LMs) like BERT have shown superior performance in second-pass rescoring, the high computational cost of scaling up the pretraining stage and adapting the pretrained models to specific domains limit their practical use in rescoring. Here we present a method based on low-rank decomposition to train a rescoring BERT model and adapt it to new domains using only a fraction (0.08%) of the pretrained parameters. These inserted matrices are optimized through a discriminative training objective along with a correlation-based regularization loss. The proposed low-rank adaptation Rescore-BERT (LoRB) architecture is evaluated on LibriSpeech and internal datasets with decreased training times by factors between 5.4 and 3.6.

Rhythm-controllable Attention with High Robustness for Long Sentence Speech Synthesis

Regressive Text-to-Speech (TTS) system utilizes attention mechanism to generate alignment between text and acoustic feature sequence. Alignment determines synthesis robustness (e.g, the occurence of skipping, repeating, and collapse) and rhythm via duration control. However, current attention algorithms used in speech synthesis cannot control rhythm using external duration information to generate natural speech while ensuring robustness. In this study, we propose Rhythm-controllable Attention (RC-Attention) based on Tracotron2, which improves robustness and naturalness simultaneously. Proposed attention adopts a trainable scalar learned from four kinds of information to achieve rhythm control, which makes rhythm control more robust and natural, even when synthesized sentences are extremely longer than training corpus. We use word errors counting and AB preference test to measure robustness of proposed method and naturalness of synthesized speech, respectively. Results shows that RC-Attention has the lowest word error rate of nearly 0.6%, compared with 11.8% for baseline system. Moreover, nearly 60% subjects prefer to the speech synthesized with RC-Attention to that with Forward Attention, because the former has more natural rhythm.

PROCTER: PROnunciation-aware ConTextual adaptER for personalized speech recognition in neural transducers

End-to-End (E2E) automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems used in voice assistants often have difficulties recognizing infrequent words personalized to the user, such as names and places. Rare words often have non-trivial pronunciations, and in such cases, human knowledge in the form of a pronunciation lexicon can be useful. We propose a PROnunCiation-aware conTextual adaptER (PROCTER) that dynamically injects lexicon knowledge into an RNN-T model by adding a phonemic embedding along with a textual embedding. The experimental results show that the proposed PROCTER architecture outperforms the baseline RNN-T model by improving the word error rate (WER) by 44% and 57% when measured on personalized entities and personalized rare entities, respectively, while increasing the model size (number of trainable parameters) by only 1%. Furthermore, when evaluated in a zero-shot setting to recognize personalized device names, we observe 7% WER improvement with PROCTER, as compared to only 1% WER improvement with text-only contextual attention

Insight-HXMT and GECAM-C observations of the brightest-of-all-time GRB 221009A

GRB 221009A is the brightest gamma-ray burst ever detected since the discovery of this kind of energetic explosions. However, an accurate measurement of the prompt emission properties of this burst is very challenging due to its exceptional brightness. With joint observations of \textit{Insight}-HXMT and GECAM-C, we made an unprecedentedly accurate measurement of the emission during the first $\sim$1800 s of GRB 221009A, including its precursor, main emission (ME, which dominates the burst in flux), flaring emission and early afterglow, in the hard X-ray to soft gamma-ray band from $\sim$ 10 keV to $\sim$ 6 MeV. Based on the GECAM-C unsaturated data of the ME, we measure a record-breaking isotropic equivalent energy ($E_{\rm iso}$) of $\bf \sim 1.5 \times 10^{55}$ erg, which is about eight times the total rest-mass energy of the Sun. The early afterglow data require a significant jet break between 650 s and 1100 s, most likely at $\sim950$ s from the afterglow starting time $T_{AG}$, which corresponds to a jet opening angle of $\sim {0.7^\circ} \ (η_γn)^{1/8}$, where $n$ is the ambient medium density in units of $\rm cm^{-3}$ and $η_γ$ is the ratio between $γ$-ray energy and afterglow kinetic energy. The beaming-corrected total $γ$-ray energy $E_γ$ is $\sim 1.15 \times10^{51} \ (η_γn)^{1/4}$ erg, which is typical for long GRBs. These results suggest that this GRB may have a special central engine, which could launch and collimate a very narrowly beamed jet with an ordinary energy budget, leading to exceptionally luminous gamma-ray radiation per unit solid angle. Alternatively, more GRBs might have such a narrow and bright beam, which are missed by an unfavorable viewing angle or have been detected without distance measurement.

The Long-term Monitoring Results of Insight-HXMT in the First 4 Yr Galactic Plane Scanning Survey

The first X-ray source catalog of Insight-HXMT Galactic Plane (|b|<10deg) Scanning Survey (GPSS) is presented based on the data accumulated from June 2017 to August 2021. The 4 yr limit sensitivities at main energy bands can reach 8.2x10^(-12) erg/s/cm^2} (2-6 keV), 4.21x10^(-11) erg/s/cm^2 (7-40 keV) and 2.78x10^(-11) erg/s/cm^2 (25-100 keV). More than 1300 sources have been monitored at a wide band (1$-$100\,keV), of which 223 sources have a signal-to-noise ratio greater than 5. We combined the GPSS data of Insight-HXMT and MAXI and found it is feasible to obtain more complete long-term light curves from their scanning results. The flux variabilities at different energy bands of the 223 bright sources are analyzed based on the excess variances. It is found that the fluxes of X-ray binaries are more active than those of supernova remnants and isolated pulsars. Different types of binaries, e.g., low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs), high-mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs), neutron star binaries, and black hole binaries, also distinctively show different regularities. In addition, the relations between the hardness ratio (HR) and excess variances, and HR and source types are analyzed. It is obvious that the HRs of HMXBs tend to be harder than those of LMXBs and HMXBs tend to be more active than those of LMXBs.

A Localization Method of High Energy Transients for All-Sky Gamma-Ray Monitor

Fast and reliable localization of high-energy transients is crucial for characterizing the burst properties and guiding the follow-up observations. Localization based on the relative counts of different detectors has been widely used for all-sky gamma-ray monitors. There are two major methods for this counts distribution localization: $χ^{2}$ minimization method and the Bayesian method. Here we propose a modified Bayesian method that could take advantage of both the accuracy of the Bayesian method and the simplicity of the $χ^{2}$ method. With comprehensive simulations, we find that our Bayesian method with Poisson likelihood is generally more applicable for various bursts than $χ^{2}$ method, especially for weak bursts. We further proposed a location-spectrum iteration approach based on the Bayesian inference, which could alleviate the problems caused by the spectral difference between the burst and location templates. Our method is very suitable for scenarios with limited computation resources or time-sensitive applications, such as in-flight localization software, and low-latency localization for rapid follow-up observations.

AutoAttention: Automatic Field Pair Selection for Attention in User Behavior Modeling

In Click-through rate (CTR) prediction models, a user's interest is usually represented as a fixed-length vector based on her history behaviors. Recently, several methods are proposed to learn an attentive weight for each user behavior and conduct weighted sum pooling. However, these methods only manually select several fields from the target item side as the query to interact with the behaviors, neglecting the other target item fields, as well as user and context fields. Directly including all these fields in the attention may introduce noise and deteriorate the performance. In this paper, we propose a novel model named AutoAttention, which includes all item/user/context side fields as the query, and assigns a learnable weight for each field pair between behavior fields and query fields. Pruning on these field pairs via these learnable weights lead to automatic field pair selection, so as to identify and remove noisy field pairs. Though including more fields, the computation cost of AutoAttention is still low due to using a simple attention function and field pair selection. Extensive experiments on the public dataset and Tencent's production dataset demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

SLAM-TKA: Real-time Intra-operative Measurement of Tibial Resection Plane in Conventional Total Knee Arthroplasty

Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is a common orthopaedic surgery to replace a damaged knee joint with artificial implants. The inaccuracy of achieving the planned implant position can result in the risk of implant component aseptic loosening, wear out, and even a joint revision, and those failures most of the time occur on the tibial side in the conventional jig-based TKA (CON-TKA). This study aims to precisely evaluate the accuracy of the proximal tibial resection plane intra-operatively in real-time such that the evaluation processing changes very little on the CON-TKA operative procedure. Two X-ray radiographs captured during the proximal tibial resection phase together with a pre-operative patient-specific tibia 3D mesh model segmented from computed tomography (CT) scans and a trocar pin 3D mesh model are used in the proposed simultaneous localisation and mapping (SLAM) system to estimate the proximal tibial resection plane. Validations using both simulation and in-vivo datasets are performed to demonstrate the robustness and the potential clinical value of the proposed algorithm.

An Insight-HXMT view of the mHz quasi-regular modulation phenomenon in the black hole X-ray binary 4U 1630-47

Here we report the spectral-timing results of the black hole X-ray binary 4U 1630-47 during its 2021 outburst using observations from the Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope. Type-C quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) in 1.6--4.2 Hz and quasi-regular modulation (QRM) near 60 mHz are detected during the outburst. The mHz QRM has a fractional rms of 10%--16% in the 8--35 keV energy band with a Q factor (frequency/width) of 2--4. Benefiting from the broad energy band of hxmt, we study the energy dependence of the 60 mHz QRM in 1--100 keV for the first time. We find that the fractional rms of the mHz QRM increases with photon energy, while the time lags of the mHz QRM are soft and decrease with photon energy. Fast recurrence of the mHz QRM, in a timescale of less than one hour, has been observed during the outburst. During this period, the corresponding energy spectra moderately change when the source transitions from the QRM state to the non-QRM state. The QRM phenomena also shows a dependence with the accretion rate. We suggest that the QRM could be caused by an unknown accretion instability aroused from the corona.

Efficient Algorithms for Stochastic Ridepooling Assignment with Mixed Fleets

Ride-pooling, which accommodates multiple passenger requests in a single trip, has the potential to significantly increase fleet utilization in shared mobility platforms. The ride-pooling assignment problem finds optimal co-riders to maximize the total utility or profit on a shareability graph, a hypergraph representing the matching compatibility between available vehicles and pending requests. With mixed fleets due to the introduction of automated or premium vehicles, fleet sizing and relocation decisions should be made before the requests are revealed. Due to the immense size of the underlying shareability graph and demand uncertainty, it is impractical to use exact methods to calculate the optimal trip assignments. Two approximation algorithms for mid-capacity and high-capacity vehicles are proposed in this paper; The respective approximation ratios are $\frac1{p^2}$ and $\frac{e-1}{(2e+o(1)) p \ln p}$, where $p$ is the maximum vehicle capacity plus one. The performance of these algorithms is validated using a mixed autonomy on-demand mobility simulator. These efficient algorithms serve as a stepping stone for a variety of multimodal and multiclass on-demand mobility applications.

Quasi-periodic oscillations of the X-ray burst from the magnetar SGR J1935+2154 and associated with the fast radio burst FRB 200428

The origin(s) and mechanism(s) of fast radio bursts (FRBs), which are short radio pulses from cosmological distances, have remained a major puzzle since their discovery. We report a strong Quasi-Periodic Oscillation(QPO) of 40 Hz in the X-ray burst from the magnetar SGR J1935+2154 and associated with FRB 200428, significantly detected with the Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (Insight-HXMT) and also hinted by the Konus-Wind data. QPOs from magnetar bursts have only been rarely detected; our 3.4 sigma (p-value is 2.9e-4) detection of the QPO reported here reveals the strongest QPO signal observed from magnetars (except in some very rare giant flares), making this X-ray burst unique among magnetar bursts. The two X-ray spikes coinciding with the two FRB pulses are also among the peaks of the QPO. Our results suggest that at least some FRBs are related to strong oscillation processes of neutron stars. We also show that we may overestimate the significance of the QPO signal and underestimate the errors of QPO parameters if QPO exists only in a fraction of the time series of a X-ray burst which we use to calculate the Leahy-normalized periodogram.

The First Insight-HXMT Gamma-Ray Burst Catalog: The First Four Years

The Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (Insight-HXMT), is China's first X-ray astronomy satellite launched on June 15, 2017. The anti-coincidence CsI detectors of the High Energy X-ray telescope (HE) onboard Insight-HXMT could serve as an all-sky gamma-ray monitor in about 0.2-3 MeV. In its first four years of operation, Insight-HXMT has detected 322 Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) by offline search pipeline including blind search and targeted search. For the GOLDEN sample of Insight-HXMT GRBs, joint analyses were performed with other GRB missions, including Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (Fermi/GBM), Swift Burst Alert Telescope (Swift/BAT) and Gravitational wave high-energy Electromagnetic Counterpart All-sky Monitor (GECAM). It shows that Insight-HXMT can provide better constraint on GRB spectrum at higher energy band. The properties of Insight-HXMT GRBs are reported in detail, including their trigger time, duration, spectral parameters, peak fluxes of different time scales and fluence. This catalog is an official product of the Insight-HXMT GRB team.
