Transformer-Squared: Self-adaptive LLMs

Self-adaptive large language models (LLMs) aim to solve the challenges posed by traditional fine-tuning methods, which are often computationally intensive and static in their ability to handle diverse tasks. We introduce Transformer-Squared, a novel self-adaptation framework that adapts LLMs for unseen tasks in real-time by selectively adjusting only the singular components of their weight matrices. During inference, Transformer-Squared employs a two-pass mechanism: first, a dispatch system identifies the task properties, and then task-specific 'expert' vectors, trained using reinforcement learning, are dynamically mixed to obtain targeted behavior for the incoming prompt. Our method consistently outperforms ubiquitous approaches such as LoRA, with fewer parameters and greater efficiency. Furthermore, Transformer-Squared demonstrates versatility across different LLM architectures and modalities, including vision-language tasks. Transformer-Squared represents a significant leap forward, offering a scalable, efficient solution for enhancing the adaptability and task-specific performance of LLMs, paving the way for truly dynamic, self-organizing AI systems.

FovealNet: Advancing AI-Driven Gaze Tracking Solutions for Optimized Foveated Rendering System Performance in Virtual Reality

Leveraging real-time eye-tracking, foveated rendering optimizes hardware efficiency and enhances visual quality virtual reality (VR). This approach leverages eye-tracking techniques to determine where the user is looking, allowing the system to render high-resolution graphics only in the foveal region-the small area of the retina where visual acuity is highest, while the peripheral view is rendered at lower resolution. However, modern deep learning-based gaze-tracking solutions often exhibit a long-tail distribution of tracking errors, which can degrade user experience and reduce the benefits of foveated rendering by causing misalignment and decreased visual quality. This paper introduces \textit{FovealNet}, an advanced AI-driven gaze tracking framework designed to optimize system performance by strategically enhancing gaze tracking accuracy. To further reduce the implementation cost of the gaze tracking algorithm, FovealNet employs an event-based cropping method that eliminates over $64.8\%$ of irrelevant pixels from the input image. Additionally, it incorporates a simple yet effective token-pruning strategy that dynamically removes tokens on the fly without compromising tracking accuracy. Finally, to support different runtime rendering configurations, we propose a system performance-aware multi-resolution training strategy, allowing the gaze tracking DNN to adapt and optimize overall system performance more effectively. Evaluation results demonstrate that FovealNet achieves at least $1.42\times$ speed up compared to previous methods and 13\% increase in perceptual quality for foveated output.

Aurora-M: Open Source Continual Pre-training for Multilingual Language and Code

Pretrained language models are an integral part of AI applications, but their high computational cost for training limits accessibility. Initiatives such as Bloom and StarCoder aim to democratize access to pretrained models for collaborative community development. Despite these efforts, such models encounter challenges such as limited multilingual capabilities, risks of catastrophic forgetting during continual pretraining, and the high costs of training models from scratch, alongside the need to align with AI safety standards and regulatory frameworks. This paper presents Aurora-M, a 15B parameter multilingual open-source model trained on English, Finnish, Hindi, Japanese, Vietnamese, and code. Continually pretrained from StarCoderPlus on 435B additional tokens, Aurora-M surpasses 2T tokens in total training token count. It is the first open-source multilingual model fine-tuned on human-reviewed safety instructions, thus aligning its development not only with conventional red-teaming considerations, but also with the specific concerns articulated in the Biden-Harris Executive Order on the Safe, Secure, and Trustworthy Development and Use of Artificial Intelligence. We evaluate Aurora-M across a wide range of tasks and languages, showcasing its robustness against catastrophic forgetting and its superior performance in multilingual settings, particularly in safety evaluations. We open-source Aurora-M and its variants to encourage responsible open-source development of large language models at https://huggingface.co/aurora-m.

Computer Vision-Driven Gesture Recognition: Toward Natural and Intuitive Human-Computer

This study mainly explores the application of natural gesture recognition based on computer vision in human-computer interaction, aiming to improve the fluency and naturalness of human-computer interaction through gesture recognition technology. In the fields of virtual reality, augmented reality and smart home, traditional input methods have gradually failed to meet the needs of users for interactive experience. As an intuitive and convenient interaction method, gestures have received more and more attention. This paper proposes a gesture recognition method based on a three-dimensional hand skeleton model. By simulating the three-dimensional spatial distribution of hand joints, a simplified hand skeleton structure is constructed. By connecting the palm and each finger joint, a dynamic and static gesture model of the hand is formed, which further improves the accuracy and efficiency of gesture recognition. Experimental results show that this method can effectively recognize various gestures and maintain high recognition accuracy and real-time response capabilities in different environments. In addition, combined with multimodal technologies such as eye tracking, the intelligence level of the gesture recognition system can be further improved, bringing a richer and more intuitive user experience. In the future, with the continuous development of computer vision, deep learning and multimodal interaction technology, natural interaction based on gestures will play an important role in a wider range of application scenarios and promote revolutionary progress in human-computer interaction.

BudgetFusion: Perceptually-Guided Adaptive Diffusion Models

Diffusion models have shown unprecedented success in the task of text-to-image generation. While these models are capable of generating high-quality and realistic images, the complexity of sequential denoising has raised societal concerns regarding high computational demands and energy consumption. In response, various efforts have been made to improve inference efficiency. However, most of the existing efforts have taken a fixed approach with neural network simplification or text prompt optimization. Are the quality improvements from all denoising computations equally perceivable to humans? We observed that images from different text prompts may require different computational efforts given the desired content. The observation motivates us to present BudgetFusion, a novel model that suggests the most perceptually efficient number of diffusion steps before a diffusion model starts to generate an image. This is achieved by predicting multi-level perceptual metrics relative to diffusion steps. With the popular Stable Diffusion as an example, we conduct both numerical analyses and user studies. Our experiments show that BudgetFusion saves up to five seconds per prompt without compromising perceptual similarity. We hope this work can initiate efforts toward answering a core question: how much do humans perceptually gain from images created by a generative model, per watt of energy?

Emma-X: An Embodied Multimodal Action Model with Grounded Chain of Thought and Look-ahead Spatial Reasoning

Traditional reinforcement learning-based robotic control methods are often task-specific and fail to generalize across diverse environments or unseen objects and instructions. Visual Language Models (VLMs) demonstrate strong scene understanding and planning capabilities but lack the ability to generate actionable policies tailored to specific robotic embodiments. To address this, Visual-Language-Action (VLA) models have emerged, yet they face challenges in long-horizon spatial reasoning and grounded task planning. In this work, we propose the Embodied Multimodal Action Model with Grounded Chain of Thought and Look-ahead Spatial Reasoning, Emma-X. Emma-X leverages our constructed hierarchical embodiment dataset based on BridgeV2, containing 60,000 robot manipulation trajectories auto-annotated with grounded task reasoning and spatial guidance. Additionally, we introduce a trajectory segmentation strategy based on gripper states and motion trajectories, which can help mitigate hallucination in grounding subtask reasoning generation. Experimental results demonstrate that Emma-X achieves superior performance over competitive baselines, particularly in real-world robotic tasks requiring spatial reasoning.

Bayesian Variable Selection for High-Dimensional Mediation Analysis: Application to Metabolomics Data in Epidemiological Studies

In epidemiological research, causal models incorporating potential mediators along a pathway are crucial for understanding how exposures influence health outcomes. This work is motivated by integrated epidemiological and blood biomarker studies, investigating the relationship between long-term adherence to a Mediterranean diet and cardiometabolic health, with plasma metabolomes as potential mediators. Analyzing causal mediation in such high-dimensional omics data presents substantial challenges, including complex dependencies among mediators and the need for advanced regularization or Bayesian techniques to ensure stable and interpretable estimation and selection of indirect effects. To this end, we propose a novel Bayesian framework for identifying active pathways and estimating indirect effects in the presence of high-dimensional multivariate mediators. Our approach adopts a multivariate stochastic search variable selection method, tailored for such complex mediation scenarios. Central to our method is the introduction of a set of priors for the selection: a Markov random field prior and sequential subsetting Bernoulli priors. The first prior's Markov property leverages the inherent correlations among mediators, thereby increasing power to detect mediated effects. The sequential subsetting aspect of the second prior encourages the simultaneous selection of relevant mediators and their corresponding indirect effects from the two model parts, providing a more coherent and efficient variable selection framework, specific to mediation analysis. Comprehensive simulation studies demonstrate that the proposed method provides superior power in detecting active mediating pathways. We further illustrate the practical utility of the method through its application to metabolome data from two cohort studies, highlighting its effectiveness in real data setting.

Group-wise normalization in differential abundance analysis of microbiome samples

A key challenge in differential abundance analysis of microbial samples is that the counts for each sample are compositional, resulting in biased comparisons of the absolute abundance across study groups. Normalization-based differential abundance analysis methods rely on external normalization factors that account for the compositionality by standardizing the counts onto a common numerical scale. However, existing normalization methods have struggled at maintaining the false discovery rate in settings where the variance or compositional bias is large. This article proposes a novel framework for normalization that can reduce bias in differential abundance analysis by re-conceptualizing normalization as a group-level task. We present two normalization methods within the group-wise framework: group-wise relative log expression (G-RLE) and fold-truncated sum scaling (FTSS). G-RLE and FTSS achieve higher statistical power for identifying differentially abundant taxa than existing methods in model-based and synthetic data simulation settings, while maintaining the false discovery rate in challenging scenarios where existing methods suffer. The best results are obtained from using FTSS normalization with the differential abundance analysis method MetagenomeSeq. Code for implementing the methods and replicating the analysis can be found at our GitHub page (https://github.com/dclarkboucher/microbiome_groupwise_normalization).

Optimizing Gesture Recognition for Seamless UI Interaction Using Convolutional Neural Networks

This study introduces an advanced gesture recognition and user interface (UI) interaction system powered by deep learning, highlighting its transformative impact on UI design and functionality. By utilizing optimized convolutional neural networks (CNNs), the system achieves high-precision gesture recognition, significantly improving user interactions with digital interfaces. The process begins with preprocessing collected gesture images to meet CNN input requirements, followed by sophisticated feature extraction and classification techniques. To address class imbalance, we employ Focal Loss as the loss function, ensuring robust model performance across diverse gesture types. Experimental results demonstrate notable improvements in model metrics, with the Area Under the Curve (AUC) and Recall metrics improving as we transition from simpler models like VGG16 to more advanced ones such as DenseNet. Our enhanced model achieves strong AUC and Recall values, outperforming standard benchmarks. Notably, the system's ability to support real-time and efficient gesture recognition paves the way for a new era in UI design, where intuitive user gestures can be seamlessly integrated into everyday technology use, reducing the learning curve and enhancing user satisfaction. The implications of this development extend beyond technical performance to fundamentally reshape user-technology interactions, underscoring the critical role of gesture-based interfaces in the next generation of UI development. Such advancements promise to significantly enhance smart life experiences, positioning gesture recognition as a key driver in the evolution of user-centric interfaces.

Detect an Object At Once without Fine-tuning

When presented with one or a few photos of a previously unseen object, humans can instantly recognize it in different scenes. Although the human brain mechanism behind this phenomenon is still not fully understood, this work introduces a novel technical realization of this task. It consists of two phases: (1) generating a Similarity Density Map (SDM) by convolving the scene image with the given object image patch(es) so that the highlight areas in the SDM indicate the possible locations; (2) obtaining the object occupied areas in the scene through a Region Alignment Network (RAN). The RAN is constructed on a backbone of Deep Siamese Network (DSN), and different from the traditional DSNs, it aims to obtain the object accurate regions by regressing the location and area differences between the ground truths and the predicted ones indicated by the highlight areas in SDM. By pre-learning from labels annotated in traditional datasets, the SDM-RAN can detect previously unknown objects without fine-tuning. Experiments were conducted on the MS COCO, PASCAL VOC datasets. The results indicate that the proposed method outperforms state-of-the-art methods on the same task.

Curve Shortening Flow of Space Curves with Convex Projections

We show that under Space Curve Shortening flow any closed immersed curve in $\mathbb R^n$ whose projection onto $\mathbb{R}^2\times\{\vec{0}\}$ is convex remains smooth until it shrinks to a point. Throughout its evolution, the projection of the curve onto $\mathbb{R}^2\times\{\vec{0}\}$ remains convex. As an application, we show that any closed immersed curve in $\mathbb R^n$ can be perturbed to an immersed curve in $\mathbb R^{n+2}$ whose evolution by Space Curve Shortening shrinks to a point.

Low Latency Point Cloud Rendering with Learned Splatting

Point cloud is a critical 3D representation with many emerging applications. Because of the point sparsity and irregularity, high-quality rendering of point clouds is challenging and often requires complex computations to recover the continuous surface representation. On the other hand, to avoid visual discomfort, the motion-to-photon latency has to be very short, under 10 ms. Existing rendering solutions lack in either quality or speed. To tackle these challenges, we present a framework that unlocks interactive, free-viewing and high-fidelity point cloud rendering. We train a generic neural network to estimate 3D elliptical Gaussians from arbitrary point clouds and use differentiable surface splatting to render smooth texture and surface normal for arbitrary views. Our approach does not require per-scene optimization, and enable real-time rendering of dynamic point cloud. Experimental results demonstrate the proposed solution enjoys superior visual quality and speed, as well as generalizability to different scene content and robustness to compression artifacts. Can-Do! A Dataset and Neuro-Symbolic Grounded Framework for Embodied Planning with Large Multimodal Models

Large multimodal models have demonstrated impressive problem-solving abilities in vision and language tasks, and have the potential to encode extensive world knowledge. However, it remains an open challenge for these models to perceive, reason, plan, and act in realistic environments. In this work, we introduce Can-Do, a benchmark dataset designed to evaluate embodied planning abilities through more diverse and complex scenarios than previous datasets. Our dataset includes 400 multimodal samples, each consisting of natural language user instructions, visual images depicting the environment, state changes, and corresponding action plans. The data encompasses diverse aspects of commonsense knowledge, physical understanding, and safety awareness. Our fine-grained analysis reveals that state-of-the-art models, including GPT-4V, face bottlenecks in visual perception, comprehension, and reasoning abilities. To address these challenges, we propose NeuroGround, a neurosymbolic framework that first grounds the plan generation in the perceived environment states and then leverages symbolic planning engines to augment the model-generated plans. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of our framework compared to strong baselines. Our code and dataset are available at https://embodied-planning.github.io.

Improving Whisper's Recognition Performance for Under-Represented Language Kazakh Leveraging Unpaired Speech and Text

Whisper and other large-scale automatic speech recognition models have made significant progress in performance. However, their performance on many low-resource languages, such as Kazakh, is not satisfactory. It is worth researching how to utilize low-cost data to improve the performance of Whisper on under-represented languages. In this study, we utilized easily accessible unpaired speech and text data and combined the language model GPT with Whisper on Kazakh. We implemented end of transcript (EOT) judgment modification and hallucination penalty to improve the performance of speech recognition. Further, we employed the decoding average token log probability as a criterion to select samples from unlabeled speech data and used pseudo-labeled data to fine-tune the model to further improve its performance. Ultimately, we achieved more than 10\% absolute WER reduction in multiple experiments, and the whole process has the potential to be generalized to other under-represented languages.

Shadow of Kerr black hole surrounded by a cloud of strings in Rastall gravity and constraints from M87*

Motivated by the first image of a black hole captured by the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT), there has been a surge of research using observations of black hole shadows to test theories of gravity. In this paper, we carry out a study related to the shadow of Kerr black holes surrounded by a cloud of strings in Rastall gravity, which deviates from the Kerr black hole due to the presence of the string parameter $a_0$ and the parameter $β$. The horizons, ergospheres, and photon region of the black hole are shown. Moreover, we explore the shadow and observations of the black hole, which are closely linked to the parameters $a_0$ and $β$. By treating \text{M87*} as a Kerr black hole surrounded by a cloud of strings under Rastall gravity, we constrain the black hole parameters using the EHT observations. For a given $β$, the circularity deviation of the black hole obeys $ΔC\lesssim0.1$ in all regions. The angular diameter $θ_{d}=42\pm3μas$ provides the upper bound of parameters $a$ and $a_0$ for fixed $β$. The shadow axis ratio satisfies the observation data of EHT ($1<D_x\lesssim4/3$) in the whole space for a given $β$. These results are consistent with the public information from EHT. In other words, candidates for real astrophysical black holes can be Kerr black holes surrounded by a cloud of strings in Rastall gravity.

Laser cooling of a fermionic molecule

Only bosonic molecular species have been directly laser cooled to date, primarily due to an abundance of bosonic isotopes in nature and to their simpler hyperfine structure. Fermionic molecules provide new opportunities for ultracold chemistry, quantum simulation, and precision measurements. Here we report direct laser cooling of a fermionic molecular isotopologue, calcium monodeuteride (CaD). With a nuclear spin I = 1, only 5 hyperfine states need to be addressed for rotational closure in optical cycling. These hyperfine states are unresolved for typical experimental linewidths. We present a method for efficiently producing alkaline-earth metal hydrides and deuterides. We demonstrate rotational closure and show magnetically assisted Sisyphus cooling in one dimension for a beam of CaD molecules. Our results indicate that the experimental complexity for laser cooling CaD is similar to that of calcium monohydride (CaH). Laser cooling of CaD is a promising first step for production of ultracold and trapped atomic deuterium.

Quasinormal modes, Hawking radiation and absorption of the massless scalar field for Bardeen black hole surrounded by perfect fluid dark matter

We study the quasinormal modes, Hawking radiation and absorption cross-section of the Bardeen black hole surrounded by perfect fluid dark matter for a massless scalar field. Our results show that the oscillation frequency of quasinormal modes is enhanced as magnetic charge $g$ or the dark matter parameter $α$ increases. For damping rate of quasinormal modes, the influence of them is different. Specifically, the increase of dark matter parameter $α$ makes the damping rate increasing at first and then decreasing. While the damping rate is continuously decreasing with the increase of the magnetic charge $g$. Moreover, we find that the increase of the dark matter parameter $α$ enhances the power emission spectrum whereas magnetic charge $g$ suppresses it. This means that the lifespan of black holes increases for smaller value of $α$ and larger value of $g$ when other parameters are fixed. Finally, the absorption cross-section of the considered black hole is calculated with the help of the partial wave approach. Our results suggest that the absorption cross-section decreases with the dark matter parameter $α$ or the magnetic charge $g$ increasing.
