A Deep Learning Approach to Predicting Ventilator Parameters for Mechanically Ventilated Septic Patients

We develop a deep learning approach to predicting a set of ventilator parameters for a mechanically ventilated septic patient using a long and short term memory (LSTM) recurrent neural network (RNN) model. We focus on short-term predictions of a set of ventilator parameters for the septic patient in emergency intensive care unit (EICU). The short-term predictability of the model provides attending physicians with early warnings to make timely adjustment to the treatment of the patient in the EICU. The patient specific deep learning model can be trained on any given critically ill patient, making it an intelligent aide for physicians to use in emergent medical situations.

Accelerated numerical algorithms for steady states of Gross-Pitaevskii equations coupled with microwaves

We present two accelerated numerical algorithms for single-component and binary Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equations coupled with microwaves (electromagnetic fields) in steady state. One is based on a normalized gradient flow formulation, called the ASGF method, while the other on a perturbed, projected conjugate gradient approach for the nonlinear constrained optimization, called the PPNCG method. The coupled GP equations are nonlocal in space, describing pseudo-spinor Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) interacting with an electromagnetic field. Our interest in this study is to develop efficient, iterative numerical methods for steady symmetric and central vortex states of the nonlocal GP equation systems. In the algorithms, the GP equations are discretized by a Legendre-Galerkin spectral method in a polar coordinate in two-dimensional (2D) space. The new algorithms are shown to outperform the existing ones through a host of benchmark examples, among which the PPNCG method performs the best. Additional numerical simulations of the central vortex states are provided to demonstrate the usefulness and efficiency of the new algorithms.

CM-Net: Concentric Mask based Arbitrary-Shaped Text Detection

Recently fast arbitrary-shaped text detection has become an attractive research topic. However, most existing methods are non-real-time, which may fall short in intelligent systems. Although a few real-time text methods are proposed, the detection accuracy is far behind non-real-time methods. To improve the detection accuracy and speed simultaneously, we propose a novel fast and accurate text detection framework, namely CM-Net, which is constructed based on a new text representation method and a multi-perspective feature (MPF) module. The former can fit arbitrary-shaped text contours by concentric mask (CM) in an efficient and robust way. The latter encourages the network to learn more CM-related discriminative features from multiple perspectives and brings no extra computational cost. Benefiting the advantages of CM and MPF, the proposed CM-Net only needs to predict one CM of the text instance to rebuild the text contour and achieves the best balance between detection accuracy and speed compared with previous works. Moreover, to ensure that multi-perspective features are effectively learned, the multi-factor constraints loss is proposed. Extensive experiments demonstrate the proposed CM is efficient and robust to fit arbitrary-shaped text instances, and also validate the effectiveness of MPF and constraints loss for discriminative text features recognition. Furthermore, experimental results show that the proposed CM-Net is superior to existing state-of-the-art (SOTA) real-time text detection methods in both detection speed and accuracy on MSRA-TD500, CTW1500, Total-Text, and ICDAR2015 datasets.

Pressure-Induced Superconductivity and Structural Phase Transitions in Magnetic Topological Insulator Candidate MnSb4Te7

The magnetic van der Waals crystals (MnX2Te4)m(X2Te3)n (X = Sb, Bi) have drawn significant attention due to their rich topological properties and the tenability by external magnetic field. In this work, we report on the discovery of superconductivity in magnetic topological insulator candidate MnSb4Te7 (m = 1, n = 1) via the application of high pressure. The antiferromagnetic ordering is robust to pressure until 8 GPa and then fully suppressed. The carrier type converts from hole- to electron-type accompanied with structural phase transition at around 15 GPa. Superconductivity emerges near the critical pressure 30 GPa where MnSb4Te7 converted into a simple cubic phase. Interestingly, MnSb4Te7 shows a dome-like phase diagram with a maximum Tc of 2.2 K at 50.7 GPa. The results demonstrate that MnSb4Te7 with nontrivial topology of electronic states display new ground states upon compression.

Fishtail effect and the vortex phase diagram of high-entropy alloy superconductor

High-entropy alloy (HEA) is an attracting topic raising in materials science and condensed matter physics. Although several types of superconductors have been discovered in HEAs, the critical currents (Jc) of HEA superconductors remain uncharacterized up to now. Here, we systematically study the current-carrying ability of (TaNb)0.7(HfZrTi)0.5 HEA at various heat treatment conditions. We obtained the high upper critical field and large current carrying ability, which point to optimistic applications. Interestingly, the fishtail or second peak effect was found for the first time in HEA superconductors, and the position of the vortex pinning force shows a maximum at 0.72 of the reduced field, which is quite different from the cuprates and iron-based high-Tc superconductors. Together with the resistive measurements, the vortex phase diagram is obtained for HEA superconductor.

Stable and Efficient Policy Evaluation

Policy evaluation algorithms are essential to reinforcement learning due to their ability to predict the performance of a policy. However, there are two long-standing issues lying in this prediction problem that need to be tackled: off-policy stability and on-policy efficiency. The conventional temporal difference (TD) algorithm is known to perform very well in the on-policy setting, yet is not off-policy stable. On the other hand, the gradient TD and emphatic TD algorithms are off-policy stable, but are not on-policy efficient. This paper introduces novel algorithms that are both off-policy stable and on-policy efficient by using the oblique projection method. The empirical experimental results on various domains validate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

The rapid progress of photorealistic synthesis techniques has reached a critical point where the boundary between real and manipulated images starts to blur. Recently, a mega-scale deep face forgery dataset, ForgeryNet which comprised of 2.9 million images and 221,247 videos has been released. It is by far the largest publicly available in terms of data-scale, manipulations (7 image-level approaches, 8 video-level approaches), perturbations (36 independent and more mixed perturbations), and annotations (6.3 million classification labels, 2.9 million manipulated area annotations, and 221,247 temporal forgery segment labels). This paper reports methods and results in the ForgeryNet - Face Forgery Analysis Challenge 2021, which employs the ForgeryNet benchmark. The model evaluation is conducted offline on the private test set. A total of 186 participants registered for the competition, and 11 teams made valid submissions. We will analyze the top-ranked solutions and present some discussion on future work directions.

Pressure induced superconductivity in WB2 and ReB2 through modifying the B layers

The recent discovery of superconductivity up to 32 K in the pressurized MoB2 reignites the interests in exploring high-Tc superconductors in transition-metal diborides. Inspired by that work, we turn our attention to the 5d transition-metal diborides. Here we systematically investigate the responses of both structural and physical properties of WB2 and ReB2 to external pressure, which possess different types of boron layers. Similar to MoB2, the pressure-induced superconductivity was also observed in WB2 above 60 GPa with a maximum Tc of 15 K at 100 GPa, while no superconductivity was detected in ReB2 in this pressure range. Interestingly, the structures at ambient pressure for both WB2 and ReB2 persist to high pressure without structural phase transitions. Theoretical calculations suggest that the ratio of flat boron layers in this class of transition-metal diborides may be crucial for the appearance of high Tc. The combined theoretical and experimental results highlight the effect of geometry of boron layers on superconductivity and shed light on the exploration of novel high-Tc superconductors in borides.

Adaptive Shrink-Mask for Text Detection

Existing real-time text detectors reconstruct text contours by shrink-masks directly, which simplifies the framework and can make the model run fast. However, the strong dependence on predicted shrink-masks leads to unstable detection results. Moreover, the discrimination of shrink-masks is a pixelwise prediction task. Supervising the network by shrink-masks only will lose much semantic context, which leads to the false detection of shrink-masks. To address these problems, we construct an efficient text detection network, Adaptive Shrink-Mask for Text Detection (ASMTD), which improves the accuracy during training and reduces the complexity of the inference process. At first, the Adaptive Shrink-Mask (ASM) is proposed to represent texts by shrink-masks and independent adaptive offsets. It weakens the coupling of texts to shrink-masks, which improves the robustness of detection results. Then, the Super-pixel Window (SPW) is designed to supervise the network. It utilizes the surroundings of each pixel to improve the reliability of predicted shrink-masks and does not appear during testing. In the end, a lightweight feature merging branch is constructed to reduce the computational cost. As demonstrated in the experiments, our method is superior to existing state-of-the-art (SOTA) methods in both detection accuracy and speed on multiple benchmarks.

Quantum oscillations in Noncentrosymmetric Weyl semimetals RAlSi (R = Sm and Ce)

Weyl semimetal (WSM) as a new type of quantum state of matter hosting low energy relativistic quasiparticles, has attracted significant attention for both scientific community and potential quantum device applications. Here, we report a comprehensive investigation of the structural, magnetic and transport properties of noncentrosymmetric RAlSi (R = Sm, Ce), which have been predicted to be new magnetic WSM candidates. Both samples exhibit non-saturated magnetoresistance (MR), with ~ 900% for SmAlSi and 80% for CeAlSi at 1.8 K, 9 T. The carrier densities of SmAlSi and CeAlSi display remarkable change around magnetic transition temperatures, signifying that the electronic states are sensitive to magnetic ordering of rare earth elements. At low temperatures, SmAlSi reveals prominent Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillations associated with the nontrivial Berry phase. High pressure experiments demonstrate that the magnetic order is robust and survival under high pressure. Our results would yield valuable insights of WSM physics and potentials in application to the next-generation spintronic devices in RAX family.

Initial-state temperature of light meson emission source from squared momentum transfer spectra in high-energy collisions

The squared momentum transfer spectra of light mesons, $π^0$, $π^+$, $η$, and $ρ^0$, produced in high-energy virtual photon-proton ($γ^{*} p$) $\rightarrow {\rm meson + nucleon}$ process in electron-proton ($ep$) collisions measured by the CLAS Collaboration are analyzed by the Monte Carlo calculations, where the transfer undergoes from the incident $γ^*$ to emitted meson or equivalently from the target proton to emitted nucleon. In the calculations, the Erlang distribution from a multi-source thermal model is used to describe the transverse momentum spectra of emitted particles. Our results show that the average transverse momentum ($\langle p_T\rangle$) and the initial-state temperature ($T_i$) increase from lower squared photon virtuality ($Q^2$) and Bjorken variable ($x_B$) to higher one. This renders that the excitation degree of emission source, which is described by $\langle p_T\rangle$ and $T_i$, increases with increasing of $Q^2$ and $x_B$.

Pressure-induced Superconductivity in Noncentrosymmetric Weyl Semimetals LaAlX (X = Si and Ge)

In topological materials, Dirac fermions can split into two Weyl fermions with opposite chiralities due to the breaking of space inversion symmetry, while in non-centrosymmetric superconductors, novel superconducting electron pairing mechanisms arise because of the antisymmetric spin-orbit coupling. In this work, we report the pressure-introduced superconductivity in a typical noncentrosymmetric Weyl semimetal LaAlX (X=Si and Ge). Superconductivity was observed at around 65 GPa without structural phase transition. A typical dome-shape phase diagram is obtained with the maximum Tc of 2.5 K (2.1 K) for LaAlSi (LaAlGe). Furthermore, the application of pressure does not destroy the nontrivial band topology of LaAlSi up to 80.4 GPa, making such materials as potential candidates for realizing topological superconductivity. Our discovery of superconductivity in LaAlX (X=Si and Ge) will provide critical insight in noncentrosymmetric superconductors and stimulate further study on superconductivity in Weyl semimetals.

Domain-adaptive Crowd Counting via High-quality Image Translation and Density Reconstruction

Recently, crowd counting using supervised learning achieves a remarkable improvement. Nevertheless, most counters rely on a large amount of manually labeled data. With the release of synthetic crowd data, a potential alternative is transferring knowledge from them to real data without any manual label. However, there is no method to effectively suppress domain gaps and output elaborate density maps during the transferring. To remedy the above problems, this paper proposes a Domain-Adaptive Crowd Counting (DACC) framework, which consists of a high-quality image translation and density map reconstruction. To be specific, the former focuses on translating synthetic data to realistic images, which prompts the translation quality by segregating domain-shared/independent features and designing content-aware consistency loss. The latter aims at generating pseudo labels on real scenes to improve the prediction quality. Next, we retrain a final counter using these pseudo labels. Adaptation experiments on six real-world datasets demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms the state-of-the-art methods.

Unsupervised Domain Adaptive Learning via Synthetic Data for Person Re-identification

Person re-identification (re-ID) has gained more and more attention due to its widespread applications in intelligent video surveillance. Unfortunately, the mainstream deep learning methods still need a large quantity of labeled data to train models, and annotating data is an expensive work in real-world scenarios. In addition, due to domain gaps between different datasets, the performance is dramatically decreased when re-ID models pre-trained on label-rich datasets (source domain) are directly applied to other unlabeled datasets (target domain). In this paper, we attempt to remedy these problems from two aspects, namely data and methodology. Firstly, we develop a data collector to automatically generate synthetic re-ID samples in a computer game, and construct a data labeler to simultaneously annotate them, which free humans from heavy data collections and annotations. Based on them, we build two synthetic person re-ID datasets with different scales, "GSPR" and "mini-GSPR" datasets. Secondly, we propose a synthesis-based multi-domain collaborative refinement (SMCR) network, which contains a synthetic pretraining module and two collaborative-refinement modules to implement sufficient learning for the valuable knowledge from multiple domains. Extensive experiments show that our proposed framework obtains significant performance improvements over the state-of-the-art methods on multiple unsupervised domain adaptation tasks of person re-ID.

Non-Fungible Token (NFT): Overview, Evaluation, Opportunities and Challenges

The Non-Fungible Token (NFT) market is mushrooming in recent years. The concept of NFT originally comes from a token standard of Ethereum, aiming to distinguish each token with distinguishable signs. This type of token can be bound with virtual/digital properties as their unique identifications. With NFTs, all marked properties can be freely traded with customized values according to their ages, rarity, liquidity, etc. It has greatly stimulated the prosperity of the decentralized application (DApp) market. At the time of writing (May 2021), the total money used on completed NFT sales has reached $34,530,649.86$ USD. The thousandfold return on its increasing market draws huge attention worldwide. However, the development of the NFT ecosystem is still in its early stage, and the technologies of NFTs are pre-mature. Newcomers may get lost in their frenetic evolution due to the lack of systematic summaries. In this technical report, we explore the NFT ecosystems in several aspects. We start with an overview of state-of-the-art NFT solutions, then provide their technical components, protocols, standards, and desired proprieties. Afterward, we give a security evolution, with discussions on the perspectives of their design models, opportunities, and challenges. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first systematic study on the current NFT ecosystems.
