Point Cloud Quality Assessment using 3D Saliency Maps

Point cloud quality assessment (PCQA) has become an appealing research field in recent days. Considering the importance of saliency detection in quality assessment, we propose an effective full-reference PCQA metric which makes the first attempt to utilize the saliency information to facilitate quality prediction, called point cloud quality assessment using 3D saliency maps (PQSM). Specifically, we first propose a projection-based point cloud saliency map generation method, in which depth information is introduced to better reflect the geometric characteristics of point clouds. Then, we construct point cloud local neighborhoods to derive three structural descriptors to indicate the geometry, color and saliency discrepancies. Finally, a saliency-based pooling strategy is proposed to generate the final quality score. Extensive experiments are performed on four independent PCQA databases. The results demonstrate that the proposed PQSM shows competitive performances compared to multiple state-of-the-art PCQA metrics.

Longitudinal Variability Analysis on Low-dose Abdominal CT with Deep Learning-based Segmentation

Metabolic health is increasingly implicated as a risk factor across conditions from cardiology to neurology, and efficiency assessment of body composition is critical to quantitatively characterizing these relationships. 2D low dose single slice computed tomography (CT) provides a high resolution, quantitative tissue map, albeit with a limited field of view. Although numerous potential analyses have been proposed in quantifying image context, there has been no comprehensive study for low-dose single slice CT longitudinal variability with automated segmentation. We studied a total of 1816 slices from 1469 subjects of Baltimore Longitudinal Study on Aging (BLSA) abdominal dataset using supervised deep learning-based segmentation and unsupervised clustering method. 300 out of 1469 subjects that have two year gap in their first two scans were pick out to evaluate longitudinal variability with measurements including intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and coefficient of variation (CV) in terms of tissues/organs size and mean intensity. We showed that our segmentation methods are stable in longitudinal settings with Dice ranged from 0.821 to 0.962 for thirteen target abdominal tissues structures. We observed high variability in most organ with ICC<0.5, low variability in the area of muscle, abdominal wall, fat and body mask with average ICC>0.8. We found that the variability in organ is highly related to the cross-sectional position of the 2D slice. Our efforts pave quantitative exploration and quality control to reduce uncertainties in longitudinal analysis.

Reducing Positional Variance in Cross-sectional Abdominal CT Slices with Deep Conditional Generative Models

2D low-dose single-slice abdominal computed tomography (CT) slice enables direct measurements of body composition, which are critical to quantitatively characterizing health relationships on aging. However, longitudinal analysis of body composition changes using 2D abdominal slices is challenging due to positional variance between longitudinal slices acquired in different years. To reduce the positional variance, we extend the conditional generative models to our C-SliceGen that takes an arbitrary axial slice in the abdominal region as the condition and generates a defined vertebral level slice by estimating the structural changes in the latent space. Experiments on 1170 subjects from an in-house dataset and 50 subjects from BTCV MICCAI Challenge 2015 show that our model can generate high quality images in terms of realism and similarity. External experiments on 20 subjects from the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging (BLSA) dataset that contains longitudinal single abdominal slices validate that our method can harmonize the slice positional variance in terms of muscle and visceral fat area. Our approach provides a promising direction of mapping slices from different vertebral levels to a target slice to reduce positional variance for single slice longitudinal analysis. Blind Quality Assessment of 3D Dense Point Clouds with Structure Guided Resampling

Objective quality assessment of 3D point clouds is essential for the development of immersive multimedia systems in real-world applications. Despite the success of perceptual quality evaluation for 2D images and videos, blind/no-reference metrics are still scarce for 3D point clouds with large-scale irregularly distributed 3D points. Therefore, in this paper, we propose an objective point cloud quality index with Structure Guided Resampling (SGR) to automatically evaluate the perceptually visual quality of 3D dense point clouds. The proposed SGR is a general-purpose blind quality assessment method without the assistance of any reference information. Specifically, considering that the human visual system (HVS) is highly sensitive to structure information, we first exploit the unique normal vectors of point clouds to execute regional pre-processing which consists of keypoint resampling and local region construction. Then, we extract three groups of quality-related features, including: 1) geometry density features; 2) color naturalness features; 3) angular consistency features. Both the cognitive peculiarities of the human brain and naturalness regularity are involved in the designed quality-aware features that can capture the most vital aspects of distorted 3D point clouds. Extensive experiments on several publicly available subjective point cloud quality databases validate that our proposed SGR can compete with state-of-the-art full-reference, reduced-reference, and no-reference quality assessment algorithms.

Personality-Driven Social Multimedia Content Recommendation

Social media marketing plays a vital role in promoting brand and product values to wide audiences. In order to boost their advertising revenues, global media buying platforms such as Facebook Ads constantly reduce the reach of branded organic posts, pushing brands to spend more on paid media ads. In order to run organic and paid social media marketing efficiently, it is necessary to understand the audience, tailoring the content to fit their interests and online behaviours, which is impossible to do manually at a large scale. At the same time, various personality type categorization schemes such as the Myers-Briggs Personality Type indicator make it possible to reveal the dependencies between personality traits and user content preferences on a wider scale by categorizing audience behaviours in a unified and structured manner. This problem is yet to be studied in depth by the research community, while the level of impact of different personality traits on content recommendation accuracy has not been widely utilised and comprehensively evaluated so far. Specifically, in this work we investigate the impact of human personality traits on the content recommendation model by applying a novel personality-driven multi-view content recommender system called Personality Content Marketing Recommender Engine, or PersiC. Our experimental results and real-world case study demonstrate not just PersiC's ability to perform efficient human personality-driven multi-view content recommendation, but also allow for actionable digital ad strategy recommendations, which when deployed are able to improve digital advertising efficiency by over 420% as compared to the original human-guided approach.

Point Cloud Quality Assessment: Dataset Construction and Learning-based No-Reference Metric

Full-reference (FR) point cloud quality assessment (PCQA) has achieved impressive progress in recent years. However, in many cases, obtaining the reference point clouds is difficult, so no-reference (NR) metrics have become a research hotspot. Few researches about NR-PCQA are carried out due to the lack of a large-scale PCQA dataset. In this paper, we first build a large-scale PCQA dataset named LS-PCQA, which includes 104 reference point clouds and more than 22,000 distorted samples. In the dataset, each reference point cloud is augmented with 31 types of impairments (e.g., Gaussian noise, contrast distortion, local missing, and compression loss) at 7 distortion levels. Besides, each distorted point cloud is assigned with a pseudo quality score as its substitute of Mean Opinion Score (MOS). Inspired by the hierarchical perception system and considering the intrinsic attributes of point clouds, we propose a NR metric ResSCNN based on sparse convolutional neural network (CNN) to accurately estimate the subjective quality of point clouds. We conduct several experiments to evaluate the performance of the proposed NR metric. The results demonstrate that ResSCNN exhibits the state-of-the-art (SOTA) performance among all the existing NR-PCQA metrics and even outperforms some FR metrics. The dataset presented in this work will be made publicly accessible at http://smt.sjtu.edu.cn. The source code for the proposed ResSCNN can be found at https://github.com/lyp22/ResSCNN.

Pseudo-Label Guided Multi-Contrast Generalization for Non-Contrast Organ-Aware Segmentation

Non-contrast computed tomography (NCCT) is commonly acquired for lung cancer screening, assessment of general abdominal pain or suspected renal stones, trauma evaluation, and many other indications. However, the absence of contrast limits distinguishing organ in-between boundaries. In this paper, we propose a novel unsupervised approach that leverages pairwise contrast-enhanced CT (CECT) context to compute non-contrast segmentation without ground-truth label. Unlike generative adversarial approaches, we compute the pairwise morphological context with CECT to provide teacher guidance instead of generating fake anatomical context. Additionally, we further augment the intensity correlations in 'organ-specific' settings and increase the sensitivity to organ-aware boundary. We validate our approach on multi-organ segmentation with paired non-contrast & contrast-enhanced CT scans using five-fold cross-validation. Full external validations are performed on an independent non-contrast cohort for aorta segmentation. Compared with current abdominal organs segmentation state-of-the-art in fully supervised setting, our proposed pipeline achieves a significantly higher Dice by 3.98% (internal multi-organ annotated), and 8.00% (external aorta annotated) for abdominal organs segmentation. The code and pretrained models are publicly available at https://github.com/MASILab/ContrastMix.

No-Reference Point Cloud Quality Assessment via Domain Adaptation

We present a novel no-reference quality assessment metric, the image transferred point cloud quality assessment (IT-PCQA), for 3D point clouds. For quality assessment, deep neural network (DNN) has shown compelling performance on no-reference metric design. However, the most challenging issue for no-reference PCQA is that we lack large-scale subjective databases to drive robust networks. Our motivation is that the human visual system (HVS) is the decision-maker regardless of the type of media for quality assessment. Leveraging the rich subjective scores of the natural images, we can quest the evaluation criteria of human perception via DNN and transfer the capability of prediction to 3D point clouds. In particular, we treat natural images as the source domain and point clouds as the target domain, and infer point cloud quality via unsupervised adversarial domain adaptation. To extract effective latent features and minimize the domain discrepancy, we propose a hierarchical feature encoder and a conditional-discriminative network. Considering that the ultimate purpose is regressing objective score, we introduce a novel conditional cross entropy loss in the conditional-discriminative network to penalize the negative samples which hinder the convergence of the quality regression network. Experimental results show that the proposed method can achieve higher performance than traditional no-reference metrics, even comparable results with full-reference metrics. The proposed method also suggests the feasibility of assessing the quality of specific media content without the expensive and cumbersome subjective evaluations. Code is available at https://github.com/Qi-Yangsjtu/IT-PCQA.

Characterizing Renal Structures with 3D Block Aggregate Transformers

Efficiently quantifying renal structures can provide distinct spatial context and facilitate biomarker discovery for kidney morphology. However, the development and evaluation of the transformer model to segment the renal cortex, medulla, and collecting system remains challenging due to data inefficiency. Inspired by the hierarchical structures in vision transformer, we propose a novel method using a 3D block aggregation transformer for segmenting kidney components on contrast-enhanced CT scans. We construct the first cohort of renal substructures segmentation dataset with 116 subjects under institutional review board (IRB) approval. Our method yields the state-of-the-art performance (Dice of 0.8467) against the baseline approach of 0.8308 with the data-efficient design. The Pearson R achieves 0.9891 between the proposed method and manual standards and indicates the strong correlation and reproducibility for volumetric analysis. We extend the proposed method to the public KiTS dataset, the method leads to improved accuracy compared to transformer-based approaches. We show that the 3D block aggregation transformer can achieve local communication between sequence representations without modifying self-attention, and it can serve as an accurate and efficient quantification tool for characterizing renal structures.

Semantic-Aware Contrastive Learning for Multi-object Medical Image Segmentation

Medical image segmentation, or computing voxelwise semantic masks, is a fundamental yet challenging task to compute a voxel-level semantic mask. To increase the ability of encoder-decoder neural networks to perform this task across large clinical cohorts, contrastive learning provides an opportunity to stabilize model initialization and enhance encoders without labels. However, multiple target objects (with different semantic meanings) may exist in a single image, which poses a problem for adapting traditional contrastive learning methods from prevalent 'image-level classification' to 'pixel-level segmentation'. In this paper, we propose a simple semantic-aware contrastive learning approach leveraging attention masks to advance multi-object semantic segmentation. Briefly, we embed different semantic objects to different clusters rather than the traditional image-level embeddings. We evaluate our proposed method on a multi-organ medical image segmentation task with both in-house data and MICCAI Challenge 2015 BTCV datasets. Compared with current state-of-the-art training strategies, our proposed pipeline yields a substantial improvement of 5.53% and 6.09% on Dice score for both medical image segmentation cohorts respectively (p-value<0.01). The performance of the proposed method is further assessed on natural images via the PASCAL VOC 2012 dataset, and achieves a substantial improvement of 2.75% on mIoU (p-value<0.01).

Which One is Better: Assessing Objective Metrics for Point Cloud Compression

Point cloud compression (PCC) has made remarkable achievement in recent years. In the mean time, point cloud quality assessment (PCQA) also realize gratifying development. Some recently emerged metrics present robust performance on public point cloud assessment databases. However, these metrics have not been evaluated specifically for PCC to verify whether they exhibit consistent performance with the subjective perception. In this paper, we establish a new dataset for compression evaluation first, which contains 175 compressed point clouds in total, deriving from 7 compression algorithms with 5 compression levels. Then leveraging the proposed dataset, we evaluate the performance of the existing PCQA metrics in terms of different compression types. The results demonstrate some deficiencies of existing metrics in compression evaluation.

Active Reinforcement Learning over MDPs

The past decade has seen the rapid development of Reinforcement Learning, which acquires impressive performance with numerous training resources. However, one of the greatest challenges in RL is generalization efficiency (i.e., generalization performance in a unit time). This paper proposes a framework of Active Reinforcement Learning (ARL) over MDPs to improve generalization efficiency in a limited resource by instance selection. Given a number of instances, the algorithm chooses out valuable instances as training sets while training the policy, thereby costing fewer resources. Unlike existing approaches, we attempt to actively select and use training data rather than train on all the given data, thereby costing fewer resources. Furthermore, we introduce a general instance evaluation metrics and selection mechanism into the framework. Experiments results reveal that the proposed framework with Proximal Policy Optimization as policy optimizer can effectively improve generalization efficiency than unselect-ed and unbiased selected methods.

Two-Faced Humans on Twitter and Facebook: Harvesting Social Multimedia for Human Personality Profiling

Human personality traits are the key drivers behind our decision-making, influencing our life path on a daily basis. Inference of personality traits, such as Myers-Briggs Personality Type, as well as an understanding of dependencies between personality traits and users' behavior on various social media platforms is of crucial importance to modern research and industry applications. The emergence of diverse and cross-purpose social media avenues makes it possible to perform user personality profiling automatically and efficiently based on data represented across multiple data modalities. However, the research efforts on personality profiling from multi-source multi-modal social media data are relatively sparse, and the level of impact of different social network data on machine learning performance has yet to be comprehensively evaluated. Furthermore, there is not such dataset in the research community to benchmark. This study is one of the first attempts towards bridging such an important research gap. Specifically, in this work, we infer the Myers-Briggs Personality Type indicators, by applying a novel multi-view fusion framework, called "PERS" and comparing the performance results not just across data modalities but also with respect to different social network data sources. Our experimental results demonstrate the PERS's ability to learn from multi-view data for personality profiling by efficiently leveraging on the significantly different data arriving from diverse social multimedia sources. We have also found that the selection of a machine learning approach is of crucial importance when choosing social network data sources and that people tend to reveal multiple facets of their personality in different social media avenues. Our released social multimedia dataset facilitates future research on this direction.

APAN: Asynchronous Propagation Attention Network for Real-time Temporal Graph Embedding

Limited by the time complexity of querying k-hop neighbors in a graph database, most graph algorithms cannot be deployed online and execute millisecond-level inference. This problem dramatically limits the potential of applying graph algorithms in certain areas, such as financial fraud detection. Therefore, we propose Asynchronous Propagation Attention Network, an asynchronous continuous time dynamic graph algorithm for real-time temporal graph embedding. Traditional graph models usually execute two serial operations: first graph computation and then model inference. We decouple model inference and graph computation step so that the heavy graph query operations will not damage the speed of model inference. Extensive experiments demonstrate that the proposed method can achieve competitive performance and 8.7 times inference speed improvement in the meantime.

SoMin.ai: Personality-Driven Content Generation Platform

In this technical demonstration, we showcase the World's first personality-driven marketing content generation platform, called SoMin.ai. The platform combines deep multi-view personality profiling framework and style generative adversarial networks facilitating the automatic creation of content that appeals to different human personality types. The platform can be used for the enhancement of the social networking user experience as well as for content marketing routines. Guided by the MBTI personality type, automatically derived from a user social network content, SoMin.ai generates new social media content based on the preferences of other users with a similar personality type aiming at enhancing the user experience on social networking venues as well diversifying the efforts of marketers when crafting new content for digital marketing campaigns. The real-time user feedback to the platform via the platform's GUI fine-tunes the content generation model and the evaluation results demonstrate the promising performance of the proposed multi-view personality profiling framework when being applied in the content generation scenario. By leveraging content generation at a large scale, marketers will be able to execute more effective digital marketing campaigns at a lower cost.

Inferring Point Cloud Quality via Graph Similarity

We propose the GraphSIM -- an objective metric to accurately predict the subjective quality of point cloud with superimposed geometry and color impairments. Motivated by the facts that human vision system is more sensitive to the high spatial-frequency components (e.g., contours, edges), and weighs more to the local structural variations rather individual point intensity, we first extract geometric keypoints by resampling the reference point cloud geometry information to form the object skeleton; we then construct local graphs centered at these keypoints for both reference and distorted point clouds, followed by collectively aggregating color gradient moments (e.g., zeroth, first, and second) that are derived between all other points and centered keypoint in the same local graph for significant feature similarity (a.k.a., local significance) measurement; Final similarity index is obtained by pooling the local graph significance across all color channels and by averaging across all graphs. Our GraphSIM is validated using two large and independent point cloud assessment datasets that involve a wide range of impairments (e.g., re-sampling, compression, additive noise), reliably demonstrating the state-of-the-art performance for all distortions with noticeable gains in predicting the subjective mean opinion score (MOS), compared with those point-wise distance-based metrics adopted in standardization reference software. Ablation studies have further shown that GraphSIM is generalized to various scenarios with consistent performance by examining its key modules and parameters.
