Solving Constrained Horn Clauses Using Dependence-Disjoint Expansions

Recursion-free Constrained Horn Clauses (CHCs) are logic-programming problems that can model safety properties of programs with bounded iteration and recursion. In addition, many CHC solvers reduce recursive systems to a series of recursion-free CHC systems that can each be solved efficiently. In this paper, we define a novel class of recursion-free systems, named Clause-Dependence Disjoint (CDD), that generalizes classes defined in previous work. The advantage of this class is that many CDD systems are smaller than systems which express the same constraints but are part of a different class. This advantage in size allows CDD systems to be solved more efficiently than their counterparts in other classes. We implemented a CHC solver named Shara. Shara solves arbitrary CHC systems by reducing the input to a series of CDD systems. Our evaluation indicates that Shara outperforms state-of-the-art implementations in many practical cases.

Observation of Quantum Interference and Coherent Control in a Photochemical Reaction

Coherent control of reactants remains a longstanding challenge in quantum chemistry. In particular, we have studied laser-induced molecular formation (photoassociation) in a Raman-dressed spin-orbit-coupled 87Rb Bose-Einstein condensate, whose spin quantum state is a superposition of multiple bare spin components. In contrast to the notably different photoassociation-induced fractional atom losses observed for the bare spin components of a statistical mixture, a superposition state with a comparable spin composition displays the same fractional loss on every spin component. We interpret this as the superposition state itself undergoing photoassociation. For superposition states induced by a large Raman coupling and zero Raman detuning, we observe a nearly complete suppression of the photoassociation rate. This suppression is consistent with a model based upon quantum destructive interference between two photoassociation pathways for colliding atoms with different spin combinations. This model also explains the measured dependence of the photoassociation rate on the Raman detuning at a moderate Raman coupling. Our work thus suggests that preparing atoms in quantum superpositions may represent a powerful new technique to coherently control photochemical reactions.

Frustration induced quasi-many-body localization without disorder

Motivated by the question of whether disorder is a prerequisite for localization to occur in quantum many-body systems, we study a frustrated one-dimensional spin chain, which supports localized many-body eigenstates in the absence of disorder. When the system is prepared in an initial state with one domain wall, it exhibits characteristic signatures of quasi-many-body localization (quasi- MBL), including initial state memory retention, an exponentially increasing lifetime with enlarging the size of the system, a logarithmic growth of entanglement entropy, and a logarithmic light cone of an out-of-time-ordered correlator. We further show that the localized many-body eigenstates can be manipulated as pseudospin-1/2s and thus could potentially serve as qubits. Our findings suggest a new route of using frustration to access quasi-MBL and preserve quantum coherence.

64-Qubit Quantum Circuit Simulation

Classical simulations of quantum circuits are limited in both space and time when the qubit count is above 50, the realm where quantum supremacy reigns. However, recently, for the low depth circuit with more than 50 qubits, there are several methods of simulation proposed by teams at Google and IBM. Here, we present a scheme of simulation which can extract a large amount of measurement outcomes within a short time, achieving a 64-qubit simulation of a universal random circuit of depth 22 using a 128-node cluster, and 56- and 42-qubit circuits on a single PC. We also estimate that a 72-qubit circuit of depth 23 can be simulated in about 16 h on a supercomputer identical to that used by the IBM team. Moreover, the simulation processes are exceedingly separable, hence parallelizable, involving just a few inter-process communications. Our work enables simulating more qubits with less hardware burden and provides a new perspective for classical simulations.

Dynamical Quantum Phase Transitions in Interacting Atomic Interferometers

Particle-wave duality has allowed physicists to establish atomic interferometers as celebrated complements to their optical counterparts in a broad range of quantum devices. However, interactions naturally lead to decoherence and have been considered as a longstanding obstacle in implementing atomic interferometers in precision measurements. Here, we show that interactions lead to dynamical quantum phase transitions between Schrödinger's cats in an atomic interferometer. These transition points result from zeros of Loschmidt echo, which approach the real axis of the complex time plane in the large particle number limit, and signify pair condensates, another type of exotic quantum states featured with prevailing two-body correlations. Our work suggests interacting atomic interferometers as a new tool for exploring dynamical quantum phase transitions and creating highly entangled states to beat the standard quantum limit.

Facial Aging and Rejuvenation by Conditional Multi-Adversarial Autoencoder with Ordinal Regression

Facial aging and facial rejuvenation analyze a given face photograph to predict a future look or estimate a past look of the person. To achieve this, it is critical to preserve human identity and the corresponding aging progression and regression with high accuracy. However, existing methods cannot simultaneously handle these two objectives well. We propose a novel generative adversarial network based approach, named the Conditional Multi-Adversarial AutoEncoder with Ordinal Regression (CMAAE-OR). It utilizes an age estimation technique to control the aging accuracy and takes a high-level feature representation to preserve personalized identity. Specifically, the face is first mapped to a latent vector through a convolutional encoder. The latent vector is then projected onto the face manifold conditional on the age through a deconvolutional generator. The latent vector preserves personalized face features and the age controls facial aging and rejuvenation. A discriminator and an ordinal regression are imposed on the encoder and the generator in tandem, making the generated face images to be more photorealistic while simultaneously exhibiting desirable aging effects. Besides, a high-level feature representation is utilized to preserve personalized identity of the generated face. Experiments on two benchmark datasets demonstrate appealing performance of the proposed method over the state-of-the-art.

From Nodal Ring Topological Superfluids to Spiral Majorana Modes in Cold Atomic Systems

In this work, we consider a 3D cubic optical lattice composed of coupled 1D wires with 1D spin-orbit coupling. When the s-wave pairing is induced through Feshbach resonance, the system becomes a topological superfluid with ring nodes, which are the ring nodal degeneracies in the bulk, and supports a large number of surface Majorana zero energy modes. The large number of surface Majorana modes remain at zero energy even in the presence of disorder due to the protection from a chiral symmetry. When the chiral symmetry is broken, the system becomes a Weyl topological superfluid with Majorana arcs. With 3D spin-orbit coupling, the Weyl superfluid becomes a novel gapless phase with spiral Majorana modes on the surface. The spatial resolved radio frequency spectroscopy is suggested to detect this novel nodal ring topological superfluid phase.

Asymptotics of spectral gaps of quasi-periodic Schrödinger operators

For non-critical almost Mathieu operators with Diophantine frequency, we establish exponential asymptotics on the size of spectral gaps, and show that the spectrum is homogeneous. We also prove the homogeneity of the spectrum for Schödinger operators with (measure-theoretically) typical quasi-periodic analytic potentials and fixed strong Diophantine frequency. As applications, we show the discrete version of Deift's conjecture \cite{Deift, Deift17} for subcritical analytic quasi-periodic initial data and solve a series of open problems of Damanik-Goldstein et al \cite{BDGL, DGL1, dgsv, Go} and Kotani \cite{Kot97}.

Unfolding multi-particle quantum correlations hidden in decoherence

Quantum coherence is a fundamental characteristic to distinguish quantum systems from their classical counterparts. Though quantum coherence persists in isolated non-interacting systems, interactions inevitably lead to decoherence, which is in general believed to cause the lost of quantum correlations. Here, we show that, accompanying to the single-particle decoherence, interactions build up quantum correlations on the two-, three-, and multi-particle levels. Using the quantitative solutions of the quantum dynamics of a condensate occupying two modes, such as two bands of an optical lattice, we find out that such dynamically emergent multi-particle correlations not only reveal how interactions control the quantum coherence of a many-body system in a highly intriguing means, but also evince the rise of exotic fragmented condensates, which are difficult to access at the ground state. We further develop a generic interferometry that can be used in experiments to measure high order correlation functions directly.

$s$-wave Contacts of Quantum Gases in Quasi-one and Quasi-two Dimensions

In quasi-one- or quasi-two-dimensional traps with strong transverse confinements, quantum gases behave like strictly one- or two-dimensional systems at large length scales. However, at short distance, the two-body scattering intrinsically has three-dimensional characteristics such that an exact description of any universal thermodynamic relation requires three-dimensional contacts, no matter how strong the confinement is. A fundamental question arises as to whether one- or two-dimensional contacts, which were originally defined for strictly one or two dimensions, are capable of describing quantum gases in quasi-one- or quasi-two-dimensional traps. Here, we point out an exact relation between the three- and low-dimensional contacts in these highly anisotropic traps. Such relation allows us to directly connect physical quantities at different length scales, and to characterise the quasi-one- or quasi-two-dimensional traps using universal thermodynamic relations that were derived for strict one or two dimensions.

Sharp Holder continuity of the Lyapunov exponent of finitely differentiable quasi-periodic cocycles

We show that if the base frequency is Diophantine, then the Lyapunov exponent of a $C^{k}$ quasi-periodic $SL(2,\mathbb{R})$ cocycle is $1/2$-Hölder continuous in the almost reducible regime, if $k$ is large enough. As a consequence, we show that if the frequency is Diophantine, $k$ is large enough, and the potential is $C^k$ small, then the integrated density of states of the corresponding quasi-periodic Schrödinger operator is $1/2$-Hölder continuous.

Completely Automated Equivalence Proofs

Verifying partial (i.e., termination-insensitive) equivalence of programs has significant practical applications in software development and education. Conventional equivalence verifiers typically rely on a combination of given relational summaries and suggested synchronization points; such information can be extremely difficult for programmers without a background in formal methods to provide for pairs of programs with dissimilar logic. In this work, we propose a completely automated verifier for determining partial equivalence, named Pequod. Pequod automatically synthesizes expressive proofs of equivalence conventionally only achievable via careful, manual constructions of product programs To do so, Pequod syntheses relational proofs for selected pairs of program paths and combines the per-path relational proofs to synthesize relational program invariants. To evaluate Pequod, we implemented it as a tool that targets Java Virtual Machine bytecode and applied it to verify the equivalence of hundreds of pairs of solutions submitted by students for problems hosted on popular online coding platforms, most of which could not be verified by existing techniques.

Genericity of mode-locking for quasiperiodically forced circle maps

We show that a generic quasiperiodically forced circle homeomorphism is mode-locked: the rotation number in the fibres is rationally related to the rotation number in the base and it is stable under small perturbations of the system. As a consequence, this implies that for a generic parameter family of quasiperiodically forced circle homeomorphisms satisfying a twist condition, the graph of the rotation number as a function of the parameter is a devil's staircase.

Weyl points and topological nodal superfluids in a face-centered cubic optical lattice

We point out that a face-centered cubic (FCC) optical lattice, which can be realised by a simple scheme using three lasers, provides one a highly controllable platform for creating Weyl points and topological nodal superfluids in ultracold atoms. In non-interacting systems, Weyl points automatically arise in the Floquet band structure when shaking such FCC lattices, and sophisticated design of the tunnelling is not required. More interestingly, in the presence of attractive interaction between two hyperfine spin states, which experience the same shaken FCC lattice, a three-dimensional topological nodal superfluid emerges, and Weyl points show up as the gapless points in the quasiparticle spectrum. One could either create a double Weyl point of charge 2, or split it to two Weyl points of charge 1, which can be moved in the momentum space by tuning the interactions. Correspondingly, the Fermi arcs at the surface may be linked with each other or separated as individual ones.

Linearization of quasiperiodically forced circle flow beyond Brjuno condition

We prove that an analytic quasiperiodically forced circle flow with a not super-Liouvillean base frequency and which is close enough to some constant rotation is $C^{\infty}$ rotations reducible, provided its fibered rotation number is Diophantine with respect to the base frequency. As a corollary, we obtain that among such systems, the linearizable ones and those displaying mode-locking are locally dense for the $C^\infty$-topology.
