Odd-dimensional Extremal Rotating Black Holes with All Equal Angular Momenta and Small Electric Charges

We consider Einstein-Maxwell gravity in diverse dimensions and construct the small charge perturbation to the extremal rotating black holes with all equal angular momenta in odd $D=2n+1$ dimensions. Exact solutions exist at the next-to-leading order (NLO), and they are analytic, allowing us to obtain the charge corrections to thermodynamic quantities at this order. Irrational exponents in the near-horizon power-series expansion emerge at the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO). We show, by numerical computation, that these horizon geometries can indeed be integrated out to asymptotic Minkowski spacetime, thereby proving the existence of the unusual singular horizon behavior of the extremal charged rotating black holes.

Vulnerability of Horizon Regularity: Horizon as a Natural Boundary

We consider Einstein gravity extended with Riemann-squared term and construct the leading-order perturbative solution to the rotating black hole with all equal angular momenta in $D=7$. We find that in the extremal limit, the linear perturbation involves irrational powers in the near-horizon expansion. We argue that, despite that all curvature tensor invariants are regular on the horizon, the irrational power implies that the inside of the horizon is destroyed and the horizon becomes the natural boundary of the spacetime. We demonstrate that this vulnerability of the horizon regularity is an innate part of Einstein theory, and can arise in Einstein theory with minimally coupled matter. However, in fine-tuned theories such as supergravities, the black hole inside is preserved, which may be one of the criteria for a consistent theory of quantum gravity. We also show that the vulnerability occurs in general higher dimensions, which only a few sporadically distributed dimensions can evade.

General Solutions of Einstein Gravity at $D\rightarrow 2$

Einstein gravity at $D\rightarrow 2$ limit can be obtained from the Kaluza-Klein procedure by taking the dimensions of the internal space to zero while keeping only the breathing mode. The resulting scalar-tensor theory can be further reduced to JT gravity or the Liouville CFT at the large central charge limit, bridging the two important 2d models. We study the general solutions of the theory, including black holes and wormholes for both positive and negative cosmological constants. We obtain the on-shell action of the nearly AdS$_2$ and show that for suitable boundary slices, the Schwarzian action governs the leading-order dynamics at the finite boundary cutoff in later time. For positive cosmological constant, we find that the scalar is well defined on the 2-sphere.
