Gift Contagion in Online Groups: Evidence From Virtual Red Packets

Gifts are important instruments for forming bonds in interpersonal relationships. Our study analyzes the phenomenon of gift contagion in online groups. Gift contagion encourages social bonds by prompting further gifts; it may also promote group interaction and solidarity. Using data on 36 million online red packet gifts on a large social site in East Asia, we leverage a natural experimental design to identify the social contagion of gift giving in online groups. Our natural experiment is enabled by the randomization of the gift amount allocation algorithm on the platform, which addresses the common challenge of causal identifications in observational data. Our study provides evidence of gift contagion: on average, receiving one additional dollar causes a recipient to send 18 cents back to the group within the subsequent 24 hours. Decomposing this effect, we find that it is mainly driven by the extensive margin -- more recipients are triggered to send red packets. Moreover, we find that this effect is stronger for "luckiest draw" recipients, suggesting the presence of a group norm regarding the next red packet sender. Finally, we investigate the moderating effects of group- and individual-level social network characteristics on gift contagion as well as the causal impact of receiving gifts on group network structure. Our study has implications for promoting group dynamics and designing marketing strategies for product adoption.

Time evolution of Einstein-Maxwell-scalar black holes after a thermal quench

We employ the holographic quench technique to drive Einstein-Maxwell-scalar (EMs) black holes out of equilibrium and study the real-time dynamics therein. From the fully nonlinear dynamical simulations, a dynamically unstable Reissner-Nordstr$\ddot{\text{o}}$m anti-de Sitter (RN-AdS) black hole can be scalarized spontaneously after an arbitrarily small quench. On the other hand, a dynamically stable scalarized black hole can be descalarized after a quench of sufficient strength. Interestingly, on the way to descalarization, the scalarized black hole behaves like a holographic superfluid, undergoing a dynamical transition from oscillatory to non-oscillatory decay. Such behaviors are related to the spectrums of quasi-normal modes of scalarized black holes, where the dominant mode migrates toward the imaginary axis with increasing quench strength. In addition, due to the $\mathbb Z_{2}$-symmetry preserved by the model, the ground state is degenerate. We find that there exists a threshold for the quench strength that induces a dynamical transition of the gravitational system from one degenerate ground state to the other. Near the threshold, the gravitational system is attracted to an excited state, that is, a RN-AdS black hole with dynamical instability.

Branches Mutual Promotion for End-to-End Weakly Supervised Semantic Segmentation

End-to-end weakly supervised semantic segmentation aims at optimizing a segmentation model in a single-stage training process based on only image annotations. Existing methods adopt an online-trained classification branch to provide pseudo annotations for supervising the segmentation branch. However, this strategy makes the classification branch dominate the whole concurrent training process, hindering these two branches from assisting each other. In our work, we treat these two branches equally by viewing them as diverse ways to generate the segmentation map, and add interactions on both their supervision and operation to achieve mutual promotion. For this purpose, a bidirectional supervision mechanism is elaborated to force the consistency between the outputs of these two branches. Thus, the segmentation branch can also give feedback to the classification branch to enhance the quality of localization seeds. Moreover, our method also designs interaction operations between these two branches to exchange their knowledge to assist each other. Experiments indicate our work outperforms existing end-to-end weakly supervised segmentation methods.

Enhancing Multi-modal and Multi-hop Question Answering via Structured Knowledge and Unified Retrieval-Generation

Multi-modal multi-hop question answering involves answering a question by reasoning over multiple input sources from different modalities. Existing methods often retrieve evidences separately and then use a language model to generate an answer based on the retrieved evidences, and thus do not adequately connect candidates and are unable to model the interdependent relations during retrieval. Moreover, the pipelined approaches of retrieval and generation might result in poor generation performance when retrieval performance is low. To address these issues, we propose a Structured Knowledge and Unified Retrieval-Generation (SKURG) approach. SKURG employs an Entity-centered Fusion Encoder to align sources from different modalities using shared entities. It then uses a unified Retrieval-Generation Decoder to integrate intermediate retrieval results for answer generation and also adaptively determine the number of retrieval steps. Extensive experiments on two representative multi-modal multi-hop QA datasets MultimodalQA and WebQA demonstrate that SKURG outperforms the state-of-the-art models in both source retrieval and answer generation performance with fewer parameters. Our code is available at https://github.com/HITsz-TMG/SKURG.

Pushing the limits of self-supervised speaker verification using regularized distillation framework

Training robust speaker verification systems without speaker labels has long been a challenging task. Previous studies observed a large performance gap between self-supervised and fully supervised methods. In this paper, we apply a non-contrastive self-supervised learning framework called DIstillation with NO labels (DINO) and propose two regularization terms applied to embeddings in DINO. One regularization term guarantees the diversity of the embeddings, while the other regularization term decorrelates the variables of each embedding. The effectiveness of various data augmentation techniques are explored, on both time and frequency domain. A range of experiments conducted on the VoxCeleb datasets demonstrate the superiority of the regularized DINO framework in speaker verification. Our method achieves the state-of-the-art speaker verification performance under a single-stage self-supervised setting on VoxCeleb. Code has been made publicly available at https://github.com/alibaba-damo-academy/3D-Speaker.

An Enhanced Res2Net with Local and Global Feature Fusion for Speaker Verification

Effective fusion of multi-scale features is crucial for improving speaker verification performance. While most existing methods aggregate multi-scale features in a layer-wise manner via simple operations, such as summation or concatenation. This paper proposes a novel architecture called Enhanced Res2Net (ERes2Net), which incorporates both local and global feature fusion techniques to improve the performance. The local feature fusion (LFF) fuses the features within one single residual block to extract the local signal. The global feature fusion (GFF) takes acoustic features of different scales as input to aggregate global signal. To facilitate effective feature fusion in both LFF and GFF, an attentional feature fusion module is employed in the ERes2Net architecture, replacing summation or concatenation operations. A range of experiments conducted on the VoxCeleb datasets demonstrate the superiority of the ERes2Net in speaker verification. Code has been made publicly available at https://github.com/alibaba-damo-academy/3D-Speaker.

DePA: Improving Non-autoregressive Machine Translation with Dependency-Aware Decoder

Non-autoregressive machine translation (NAT) models have lower translation quality than autoregressive translation (AT) models because NAT decoders do not depend on previous target tokens in the decoder input. We propose a novel and general Dependency-Aware Decoder (DePA) to enhance target dependency modeling in the decoder of fully NAT models from two perspectives: decoder self-attention and decoder input. First, we propose an autoregressive forward-backward pre-training phase before NAT training, which enables the NAT decoder to gradually learn bidirectional target dependencies for the final NAT training. Second, we transform the decoder input from the source language representation space to the target language representation space through a novel attentive transformation process, which enables the decoder to better capture target dependencies. DePA can be applied to any fully NAT models. Extensive experiments show that DePA consistently improves highly competitive and state-of-the-art fully NAT models on widely used WMT and IWSLT benchmarks by up to 1.88 BLEU gain, while maintaining the inference latency comparable to other fully NAT models.

Hyperspectral Image Super-Resolution via Dual-domain Network Based on Hybrid Convolution

Since the number of incident energies is limited, it is difficult to directly acquire hyperspectral images (HSI) with high spatial resolution. Considering the high dimensionality and correlation of HSI, super-resolution (SR) of HSI remains a challenge in the absence of auxiliary high-resolution images. Furthermore, it is very important to extract the spatial features effectively and make full use of the spectral information. This paper proposes a novel HSI super-resolution algorithm, termed dual-domain network based on hybrid convolution (SRDNet). Specifically, a dual-domain network is designed to fully exploit the spatial-spectral and frequency information among the hyper-spectral data. To capture inter-spectral self-similarity, a self-attention learning mechanism (HSL) is devised in the spatial domain. Meanwhile the pyramid structure is applied to increase the acceptance field of attention, which further reinforces the feature representation ability of the network. Moreover, to further improve the perceptual quality of HSI, a frequency loss(HFL) is introduced to optimize the model in the frequency domain. The dynamic weighting mechanism drives the network to gradually refine the generated frequency and excessive smoothing caused by spatial loss. Finally, In order to better fully obtain the mapping relationship between high-resolution space and low-resolution space, a hybrid module of 2D and 3D units with progressive upsampling strategy is utilized in our method. Experiments on a widely used benchmark dataset illustrate that the proposed SRDNet method enhances the texture information of HSI and is superior to state-of-the-art methods.

Improving BERT with Hybrid Pooling Network and Drop Mask

Transformer-based pre-trained language models, such as BERT, achieve great success in various natural language understanding tasks. Prior research found that BERT captures a rich hierarchy of linguistic information at different layers. However, the vanilla BERT uses the same self-attention mechanism for each layer to model the different contextual features. In this paper, we propose a HybridBERT model which combines self-attention and pooling networks to encode different contextual features in each layer. Additionally, we propose a simple DropMask method to address the mismatch between pre-training and fine-tuning caused by excessive use of special mask tokens during Masked Language Modeling pre-training. Experiments show that HybridBERT outperforms BERT in pre-training with lower loss, faster training speed (8% relative), lower memory cost (13% relative), and also in transfer learning with 1.5% relative higher accuracies on downstream tasks. Additionally, DropMask improves accuracies of BERT on downstream tasks across various masking rates.

Super-resolution imaging through a multimode fiber: the physical upsampling of speckle-driven

Following recent advancements in multimode fiber (MMF), miniaturization of imaging endoscopes has proven crucial for minimally invasive surgery in vivo. Recent progress enabled by super-resolution imaging methods with a data-driven deep learning (DL) framework has balanced the relationship between the core size and resolution. However, most of the DL approaches lack attention to the physical properties of the speckle, which is crucial for reconciling the relationship between the magnification of super-resolution imaging and the quality of reconstruction quality. In the paper, we find that the interferometric process of speckle formation is an essential basis for creating DL models with super-resolution imaging. It physically realizes the upsampling of low-resolution (LR) images and enhances the perceptual capabilities of the models. The finding experimentally validates the role played by the physical upsampling of speckle-driven, effectively complementing the lack of information in data-driven. Experimentally, we break the restriction of the poor reconstruction quality at great magnification by inputting the same size of the speckle with the size of the high-resolution (HR) image to the model. The guidance of our research for endoscopic imaging may accelerate the further development of minimally invasive surgery.

Nonlinear dynamics of hot, cold and bald Einstein-Maxwell-scalar black holes in AdS spacetime

We investigate the dynamical transition processes of an Einstein-Maxwell-scalar gravitational system between two local ground states and an excited state in the anti-de Sitter spacetime. From the linear perturbation theory, only the excited state possesses a single unstable mode, indicating the dynamical instability. Such an instability is associated with the tachyonic instability due to the presence of an effective potential well near the event horizon. From the nonlinear dynamics simulation, through the scalar field accretion mechanism, the critical phenomena in the transition process of the gravitational system between the two local ground states are revealed. The threshold of the accretion strength indicates the existence of a dynamical barrier in this transition process, which depends on the coupling strength between the scalar and Maxwell fields. On the other hand, for the unstable excited state, there exists a special kind of critical dynamics with a zero threshold for the perturbation strength. The perturbations of different signs push the gravitational system to fall into different local ground states. Interestingly, in an extended parameter space, there exist specific parameters such that the perturbations of non-zero amplitude fail to trigger the single unstable mode of the excited state.

FedBone: Towards Large-Scale Federated Multi-Task Learning

Heterogeneous federated multi-task learning (HFMTL) is a federated learning technique that combines heterogeneous tasks of different clients to achieve more accurate, comprehensive predictions. In real-world applications, visual and natural language tasks typically require large-scale models to extract high-level abstract features. However, large-scale models cannot be directly applied to existing federated multi-task learning methods. Existing HFML methods also disregard the impact of gradient conflicts on multi-task optimization during the federated aggregation process. In this work, we propose an innovative framework called FedBone, which enables the construction of large-scale models with better generalization from the perspective of server-client split learning and gradient projection. We split the entire model into two components: a large-scale general model (referred to as the general model) on the cloud server and multiple task-specific models (referred to as the client model) on edge clients, solving the problem of insufficient computing power on edge clients. The conflicting gradient projection technique is used to enhance the generalization of the large-scale general model between different tasks. The proposed framework is evaluated on two benchmark datasets and a real ophthalmic dataset. Comprehensive results demonstrate that FedBone efficiently adapts to heterogeneous local tasks of each client and outperforms existing federated learning algorithms in most dense prediction and classification tasks with off-the-shelf computational resources on the client side.

On Panja-Prasad conjecture

In the present paper we shall investigate the Waring's problem for upper triangular matrix algebras. The main result is the following: Let $n\geq 2$ and $m\geq 1$ be integers. Let $p(x_1,\ldots,x_m)$ be a noncommutative polynomial with zero constant term over an infinite field $K$. Let $T_n(K)$ be the set of all $n\times n$ upper triangular matrices over $K$. Suppose $1<r<n-1$, where $r$ is the order of $p$. We have that $p(T_n(K))+p(T_n(K))=J^r$, where $J$ is the Jacobson radical of $T_n(K)$. If $r=n-2$, then $p(T_n(K))=J^{n-2}$. This gives a definitive solution of a conjecture proposed by Panja and Prasad.

TFN: An Interpretable Neural Network with Time-Frequency Transform Embedded for Intelligent Fault Diagnosis

Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) are widely used in fault diagnosis of mechanical systems due to their powerful feature extraction and classification capabilities. However, the CNN is a typical black-box model, and the mechanism of CNN's decision-making are not clear, which limits its application in high-reliability-required fault diagnosis scenarios. To tackle this issue, we propose a novel interpretable neural network termed as Time-Frequency Network (TFN), where the physically meaningful time-frequency transform (TFT) method is embedded into the traditional convolutional layer as an adaptive preprocessing layer. This preprocessing layer named as time-frequency convolutional (TFconv) layer, is constrained by a well-designed kernel function to extract fault-related time-frequency information. It not only improves the diagnostic performance but also reveals the logical foundation of the CNN prediction in the frequency domain. Different TFT methods correspond to different kernel functions of the TFconv layer. In this study, four typical TFT methods are considered to formulate the TFNs and their effectiveness and interpretability are proved through three mechanical fault diagnosis experiments. Experimental results also show that the proposed TFconv layer can be easily generalized to other CNNs with different depths. The code of TFN is available on https://github.com/ChenQian0618/TFN.

Type I critical dynamical scalarization and descalarization in Einstein-Maxwell-scalar theory

We investigated the critical dynamical scalarization and descalarization of black holes within the framework of the Einstein-Maxwell-scalar theory featuring higher-order coupling functions. Both the critical scalarization and descalarization displayed first-order phase transitions. When examining the nonlinear dynamics near the threshold, we always observed critical solutions that are linearly unstable static scalarized black holes. The critical dynamical scalarization and descalarization share certain similarities with the type I critical gravitational collapse. However, their initial configurations, critical solutions, and final outcomes differ significantly. To provide further insights into the dynamical results, we conducted a comparative analysis involving static solutions and perturbative analysis.

CAM++: A Fast and Efficient Network for Speaker Verification Using Context-Aware Masking

Time delay neural network (TDNN) has been proven to be efficient for speaker verification. One of its successful variants, ECAPA-TDNN, achieved state-of-the-art performance at the cost of much higher computational complexity and slower inference speed. This makes it inadequate for scenarios with demanding inference rate and limited computational resources. We are thus interested in finding an architecture that can achieve the performance of ECAPA-TDNN and the efficiency of vanilla TDNN. In this paper, we propose an efficient network based on context-aware masking, namely CAM++, which uses densely connected time delay neural network (D-TDNN) as backbone and adopts a novel multi-granularity pooling to capture contextual information at different levels. Extensive experiments on two public benchmarks, VoxCeleb and CN-Celeb, demonstrate that the proposed architecture outperforms other mainstream speaker verification systems with lower computational cost and faster inference speed.

Spin network Entanglement and Bulk-Boundary Map in Loop Quantum Gravity

This thesis is dedicated to the study of open spin networks. We formulate quasi-local descriptions of loop quantum gravity. We investigate the coarse-graining procedure via tracing over bulk degrees of freedom, which encodes all that we can know about the quantum state of geometry from probing the boundary. We prove a boundary-to bulk universal reconstruction procedure, to be understood as a purification of the mixed boundary state into a pure bulk state. We then move to define multipartite entanglement in spin networks, and show the computation of entanglement excitation from holonomy operator, which also allows us to glimpse bulk curvature from entanglement. Moreover, by investigating another coarse-graining procedure - via gauge-fixing, which does not trace over any bulk degrees of freedom, we show a new interesting connection between bulk geometry and boundary observables via the dynamics of entanglement. Finally, we define the spin network entanglement between spin sub-networks, which correspond to spatial sub-regions. We then generalize the coarse-graining approach, and prove that the entanglement between spin sub-networks is preserved under the coarse-graining (via gauge-fixing).

Gradient Domain Weighted Guided Image Filtering

Guided image filter is a well-known local filter in image processing. However, the presence of halo artifacts is a common issue associated with this type of filter. This paper proposes an algorithm that utilizes gradient information to accurately identify the edges of an image. Furthermore, the algorithm uses weighted information to distinguish flat areas from edge areas, resulting in sharper edges and reduced blur in flat areas. This approach mitigates the excessive blurring near edges that often leads to halo artifacts. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm significantly suppresses halo artifacts at the edges, making it highly effective for both image denoising and detail enhancement.
