A Comparative Study on Multichannel Speaker-Attributed Automatic Speech Recognition in Multi-party Meetings

Speaker-attributed automatic speech recognition (SA-ASR) in multi-party meeting scenarios is one of the most valuable and challenging ASR task. It was shown that single-channel frame-level diarization with serialized output training (SC-FD-SOT), single-channel word-level diarization with SOT (SC-WD-SOT) and joint training of single-channel target-speaker separation and ASR (SC-TS-ASR) can be exploited to partially solve this problem. In this paper, we propose three corresponding multichannel (MC) SA-ASR approaches, namely MC-FD-SOT, MC-WD-SOT and MC-TS-ASR. For different tasks/models, different multichannel data fusion strategies are considered, including channel-level cross-channel attention for MC-FD-SOT, frame-level cross-channel attention for MC-WD-SOT and neural beamforming for MC-TS-ASR. Results on the AliMeeting corpus reveal that our proposed models can consistently outperform the corresponding single-channel counterparts in terms of the speaker-dependent character error rate.

MDERank: A Masked Document Embedding Rank Approach for Unsupervised Keyphrase Extraction

Keyphrase extraction (KPE) automatically extracts phrases in a document that provide a concise summary of the core content, which benefits downstream information retrieval and NLP tasks. Previous state-of-the-art (SOTA) methods select candidate keyphrases based on the similarity between learned representations of the candidates and the document. They suffer performance degradation on long documents due to discrepancy between sequence lengths which causes mismatch between representations of keyphrase candidates and the document. In this work, we propose a novel unsupervised embedding-based KPE approach, Masked Document Embedding Rank (MDERank), to address this problem by leveraging a mask strategy and ranking candidates by the similarity between embeddings of the source document and the masked document. We further develop a KPE-oriented BERT (KPEBERT) model by proposing a novel self-supervised contrastive learning method, which is more compatible to MDERank than vanilla BERT. Comprehensive evaluations on six KPE benchmarks demonstrate that the proposed MDERank outperforms state-of-the-art unsupervised KPE approach by average 1.80 $F1@15$ improvement. MDERank further benefits from KPEBERT and overall achieves average 3.53 $F1@15$ improvement over the SOTA SIFRank. Our code is available at \url{https://github.com/LinhanZ/mderank}.

One-Pot Multi-Frame Denoising

The performance of learning-based denoising largely depends on clean supervision. However, it is difficult to obtain clean images in many scenes. On the contrary, the capture of multiple noisy frames for the same field of view is available and often natural in real life. Therefore, it is necessary to avoid the restriction of clean labels and make full use of noisy data for model training. So we propose an unsupervised learning strategy named one-pot denoising (OPD) for multi-frame images. OPD is the first proposed unsupervised multi-frame denoising (MFD) method. Different from the traditional supervision schemes including both supervised Noise2Clean (N2C) and unsupervised Noise2Noise (N2N), OPD executes mutual supervision among all of the multiple frames, which gives learning more diversity of supervision and allows models to mine deeper into the correlation among frames. N2N has also been proved to be actually a simplified case of the proposed OPD. From the perspectives of data allocation and loss function, two specific implementations, random coupling (RC) and alienation loss (AL), are respectively provided to accomplish OPD during model training. In practice, our experiments demonstrate that OPD behaves as the SOTA unsupervised denoising method and is comparable to supervised N2C methods for synthetic Gaussian and Poisson noise, and real-world optical coherence tomography (OCT) speckle noise.

A Graphical Point Process Framework for Understanding Removal Effects in Multi-Touch Attribution

Marketers employ various online advertising channels to reach customers, and they are particularly interested in attribution for measuring the degree to which individual touchpoints contribute to an eventual conversion. The availability of individual customer-level path-to-purchase data and the increasing number of online marketing channels and types of touchpoints bring new challenges to this fundamental problem. We aim to tackle the attribution problem with finer granularity by conducting attribution at the path level. To this end, we develop a novel graphical point process framework to study the direct conversion effects and the full relational structure among numerous types of touchpoints simultaneously. Utilizing the temporal point process of conversion and the graphical structure, we further propose graphical attribution methods to allocate proper path-level conversion credit, called the attribution score, to individual touchpoints or corresponding channels for each customer's path to purchase. Our proposed attribution methods consider the attribution score as the removal effect, and we use the rigorous probabilistic definition to derive two types of removal effects. We examine the performance of our proposed methods in extensive simulation studies and compare their performance with commonly used attribution models. We also demonstrate the performance of the proposed methods in a real-world attribution application.

Dynamic mutation enhanced greedy strategy for wavefront shaping

Optical focusing through scattering media has important implications for optical applications in medicine, communications, and detection. In recent years, many wavefront shaping methods have been successfully applied to the field, among which the population optimization algorithm has achieved remarkable results. However, the current population optimization algorithm has some drawbacks: 1. the offspring do not fully inherit the good genes from the parent. 2. more efforts are needed to tune the parameters. In this paper, we propose the mutate greedy algorithm. It combines greedy strategies and real-time feedback of mutation rates to generate offspring. In wavefront shaping, people can realize high enhancement and fast convergence without a parameter-tuning process.

Descalarization by Quenching Charged Hairy Black Hole in asymptotically AdS spacetime

In this work, we study the real-time dynamics of the charged hairy black hole with the time-dependent source of scalar field in asymptotically anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetime. The numerical results reveal a novel descalarization mechanism. In order to obtain the hairy black hole as the initial data for the quench process, we first analyze the quasi-normal modes of the massive complex scalar field on the Reissner-Nordström anti-de Sitter (RN-AdS) black hole background. We find the dominant unstable modes for large and small RN-AdS black holes come from the zero-damped modes and AdS modes, respectively. Then, the unstable RN-AdS black holes are perturbed to trigger the transition to hairy black holes. With the hairy black hole in hand, we specify a time dependent scalar source for the system. As the source is turned on, the electric charge, energy and scalar condensation of the system start to oscillate with the entropy increasing monotonically. Finally, with the decay of the scalar source, the system gradually settles down to a new state. Interestingly, the final state of the evolution could be a hairy black hole with less scalar condensation, a RN-AdS black hole or a Schwarzschild-AdS black hole, which depends on the quench strength. However, as long as the quench strength is large enough, the system always loses all the electric charge and converges to the Schwarzschild-AdS black hole.

Holographic Einstein Ring of a Charged AdS Black Hole

Taking into account that the real quantum materials are engineered generically at a finite chemical potential, we investigate the Einstein ring structure for the lensed response of the complex scalar field as a probe wave on the charged AdS black hole in the context of AdS/CFT. On the one hand, we find that the resulting Einstein ring radius has no variation with the chemical potential, which is similar to the behavior for the weakly interacting quantum system. On the other hand, not only can such a ring exist well within the screen, but also the temperature dependence of its radius exhibits a distinct feature in the sense that it displays an appreciable increase at low temperatures while the ring keeps unchanged right at the edge of the screen for the weakly interacting system. Note that such a Einstein ring emerges in the large frequencies and can be well captured by the photon sphere away from the black hole horizon in the geometric optics approximation, thus such a distinct feature may be regarded as a universal behavior associated with the high energy modes of the strongly coupled system which has a gravity dual.

Critical Dynamics in Holographic First-Order Phase Transition

We study the critical phenomena of the dynamical transition from a metastable state to a stable state in the model of first-order phase transition via two different triggering mechanisms. Three universal stages during the fully nonlinear evolution are extracted. On the one side, by perturbing the scalar source, an isolated seed nucleus is injected into an initial homogeneous state in the supercooled region. For critical parameters of the seed nucleus, the real-time dynamics reveal that the system will converge to a critically unstable state. For supercritical parameters, the system exhibits a phase separation, while for subcritical parameters falls back to homogeneous. The shape independence of the seed nucleus is also investigated, which implies that the critical phenomena are universal. On the other side, we propose a novel mechanism to render the critical phenomena via a collision of two gravitational shock waves on the dual geometries. Specifying a collision velocity, the initial system can be also attracted to a critically unstable state. Aside from these dynamical constructions, we also quantitatively analyze the critical nucleus preventing the system from reaching the final phase separation. We find the depth of the critical nucleus increases almost linearly with the temperature, which implies that the hotter the supercooled state is, the harder for it to trigger phase separation.

Reasoning about Dependence, Preference and Coalitional Power

This paper presents a logic of preference and functional dependence (LPFD) and its hybrid extension (HLPFD), both of whose sound and strongly complete axiomatization are provided. The decidability of LPFD is also proved. The application of LPFD and HLPFD to modelling cooperative games in strategic and coalitional forms is explored. The resulted framework provides a unified view on Nash equilibrium, Pareto optimality and the core. The philosophical relevance of these game-theoretical notions to discussions of collective agency is made explicit. Some key connections with other logics are also revealed, for example, the coalition logic, the logic functional dependence and the logic of ceteris paribus preference.

Dynamical transitions in scalarization and descalarization through black hole accretion

We present the first fully nonlinear study on the accretion of scalar fields onto a seed black hole in anti-de Sitter spacetime in Einstein-Maxwell-scalar theory. Intrinsic critical phenomena in the dynamical transition between the bald and scalarized black holes are disclosed. In scalarizations, the transition is discontinuous and a metastable black hole acts as an attractor at the threshold. We construct a new physical mechanism to dynamically descalarize an isolated scalarized black hole. The first results on critical phenomena in descalarizations are revealed. The dynamical descalarizations can be either discontinuous or continuous at the threshold, distinguished by whether or not an attractor appears.

Fast optical refocusing through multimode fiber bend using Cake-Cutting Hadamard encoding algorithm to improve robustness

Multimode fibres offer the advantages of high resolution and miniaturization over single mode fibers in the field of optical imaging. However, multimode fibre's imaging is susceptible to perturbations of MMF that can lead to secondary spatial distortions in the transmitted image. Perturbations include random disturbances in the fiber as well as environmental noise. Here, we exploit the fast focusing capability of the Cake-Cutting Hadamard coding algorithm to counteract the effects of perturbations and improve the system's robustness. Simulation shows that it can approach the theoretical enhancement at 2000 measurements. Experimental results show that the algorithm can help the system to refocus in a short time when MMFs are perturbed. This research will further contribute to using multimode fibres in medicine, communication, and detection.

Dynamical development of proton cumulants and correlation functions in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 7.7$ GeV from a multiphase transport model

Higher-order cumulants of the distributions of conserved charges, such as net-baryon number, are sensitive to the quantum chromodynamics(QCD) phase transition and the QCD critical point. We calculate the cumulants and correlation functions of proton, antiproton, and net-proton multiplicity distributions in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 7.7$ GeV using a multiphase transport model(AMPT). The AMPT model can basically describe the trends of cumulants, cumulant ratios, (normalized) correlation functions of the proton and net-proton measured by the STAR experiment. The multiproton (baryon) correlations in the AMPT model are consistent with the expectation from baryon number conservation. We demonstrate that multiproton (baryon) correlations suffer the dynamical evolution of heavy-ion collisions. Our results provide a baseline for searching for the possible critical behaviors at the critical end point in relativistic heavy-ion collisions.

Bagging Regional Classification Activation Maps for Weakly Supervised Object Localization

Classification activation map (CAM), utilizing the classification structure to generate pixel-wise localization maps, is a crucial mechanism for weakly supervised object localization (WSOL). However, CAM directly uses the classifier trained on image-level features to locate objects, making it prefers to discern global discriminative factors rather than regional object cues. Thus only the discriminative locations are activated when feeding pixel-level features into this classifier. To solve this issue, this paper elaborates a plug-and-play mechanism called BagCAMs to better project a well-trained classifier for the localization task without refining or re-training the baseline structure. Our BagCAMs adopts a proposed regional localizer generation (RLG) strategy to define a set of regional localizers and then derive them from a well-trained classifier. These regional localizers can be viewed as the base learner that only discerns region-wise object factors for localization tasks, and their results can be effectively weighted by our BagCAMs to form the final localization map. Experiments indicate that adopting our proposed BagCAMs can improve the performance of baseline WSOL methods to a great extent and obtains state-of-the-art performance on three WSOL benchmarks. Code are released at https://github.com/zh460045050/BagCAMs.

CFL: Cluster Federated Learning in Large-scale Peer-to-Peer Networks

Federated learning (FL) has sparked extensive interest in exploiting the private data on clients' local devices. However, the parameter server setting of FL not only has high bandwidth requirements, but also poses data privacy issues and a single point of failure. In this paper, we propose an efficient and privacy-preserving protocol, dubbed CFL, which is the first fine-grained global model training for FL in large-scale peer-to-peer (P2P) networks. Unlike previous FL in P2P networks, CFL aggregates local model update parameters hierarchically, which improves the communication efficiency facing large amounts of clients. Also, the aggregation in CFL is performed in a secure manner by introducing the authenticated encryption scheme, whose key is established through a random pairwise key scheme enhanced by a proposed voting-based key revocation mechanism. Rigorous analyses show that CFL guarantees the privacy and data integrity and authenticity of local model update parameters under two widespread threat models. More importantly, the proposed key revocation mechanism can effectively resist hijack attacks, thereby ensuring the confidentiality of the communication keys. Ingenious experiments on the Trec06p and Trec07 datasets show that the global model trained by CFL has good classification accuracy, model generalization, and rapid convergence rate, and the dropout-robustness of the system is achieved. Compared to the first global model training protocol for FL in P2P networks, PPT, CFL improves communication efficiency by 43.25%. Also, CFL outperforms PPT in terms of computational efficiency.

Chiral Assemblies of Pinwheel Superlattices on Substrates

The unique topology and physics of chiral superlattices make their self-assembly from nanoparticles a holy grail for (meta)materials. Here we show that tetrahedral gold nanoparticles can spontaneously transform from a perovskite-like low-density phase with corner-to-corner connections into pinwheel assemblies with corner-to-edge connections and denser packing. While the corner-sharing assemblies are achiral, pinwheel superlattices become strongly mirror-asymmetric on solid substrates as demonstrated by chirality measures. Liquid-phase transmission electron microscopy and computational models show that van der Waals and electrostatic interactions between nanoparticles control thermodynamic equilibrium. Variable corner-to-edge connections among tetrahedra enable fine-tuning of chirality. The domains of the bilayer superlattices display strong chiroptical activity identified by photon-induced near-field electron microscopy and finite-difference time-domain simulations. The simplicity and versatility of the substrate-supported chiral superlattices facilitate manufacturing of metastructured coatings with unusual optical, mechanical and electronic characteristics.

PRISM: Pre-trained Indeterminate Speaker Representation Model for Speaker Diarization and Speaker Verification

Speaker embedding has been a fundamental feature for speaker-related tasks such as verification, clustering, and diarization. Traditionally, speaker embeddings are represented as fixed vectors in high-dimensional space. This could lead to biased estimations, especially when handling shorter utterances. In this paper we propose to represent a speaker utterance as "floating" vector whose state is indeterminate without knowing the context. The state of a speaker representation is jointly determined by itself, other speech from the same speaker, as well as other speakers it is being compared to. The content of the speech also contributes to determining the final state of a speaker representation. We pre-train an indeterminate speaker representation model that estimates the state of an utterance based on the context. The pre-trained model can be fine-tuned for downstream tasks such as speaker verification, speaker clustering, and speaker diarization. Substantial improvements are observed across all downstream tasks.

Dap-FL: Federated Learning flourishes by adaptive tuning and secure aggregation

Federated learning (FL), an attractive and promising distributed machine learning paradigm, has sparked extensive interest in exploiting tremendous data stored on ubiquitous mobile devices. However, conventional FL suffers severely from resource heterogeneity, as clients with weak computational and communication capability may be unable to complete local training using the same local training hyper-parameters. In this paper, we propose Dap-FL, a deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG)-assisted adaptive FL system, in which local learning rates and local training epochs are adaptively adjusted by all resource-heterogeneous clients through locally deployed DDPG-assisted adaptive hyper-parameter selection schemes. Particularly, the rationality of the proposed hyper-parameter selection scheme is confirmed through rigorous mathematical proof. Besides, due to the thoughtlessness of security consideration of adaptive FL systems in previous studies, we introduce the Paillier cryptosystem to aggregate local models in a secure and privacy-preserving manner. Rigorous analyses show that the proposed Dap-FL system could guarantee the security of clients' private local models against chosen-plaintext attacks and chosen-message attacks in a widely used honest-but-curious participants and active adversaries security model. In addition, through ingenious and extensive experiments, the proposed Dap-FL achieves higher global model prediction accuracy and faster convergence rates than conventional FL, and the comprehensiveness of the adjusted local training hyper-parameters is validated. More importantly, experimental results also show that the proposed Dap-FL achieves higher model prediction accuracy than two state-of-the-art RL-assisted FL methods, i.e., 6.03% higher than DDPG-based FL and 7.85% higher than DQN-based FL.
