Low-intensity pulsed ultrasound promotes mesenchymal stem cell transplantation-based articular cartilage regeneration via inhibiting the TNF signaling pathway

Background: Mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) transplantation therapy is highly investigated for the regenerative repair of cartilage defects. Low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) has the potential to promote chondrogenic differentiation of MSCs. However, its underlying mechanism remains unclear. Here, we investigated the promoting effects and mechanisms underlying LIPUS stimulation on the chondrogenic differentiation of human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (hUC-MSCs) and further evaluated its regenerative application value in articular cartilage defects in rats. Methods: LIPUS was applied to stimulate cultured hUC-MSCs and C28/I2 cells in vitro. Immunofluorescence staining, qPCR analysis, and transcriptome sequencing were used to detect mature cartilage-related markers of gene and protein expression for a comprehensive evaluation of differentiation. Injured articular cartilage rat models were established for further hUC-MSC transplantation and LIPUS stimulation in vivo. Histopathology and H&E staining were used to evaluate the repair effects of the injured articular cartilage with LIPUS stimulation. Results: The results showed that LIPUS stimulation with specific parameters effectively promoted the expression of mature cartilage-related genes and proteins, inhibited TNF-α gene expression in hUC-MSCs, and exhibited anti-inflammation in C28/I2 cells. In addition, the articular cartilage defects of rats were significantly repaired after hUC-MSC transplantation and LIPUS stimulation. Conclusions: Taken together, LIPUS stimulation could realize articular cartilage regeneration based on hUC-MSC transplantation due to the inhibition of the TNF signaling pathway, which is of clinical value for the relief of osteoarthritis.

LogAI: A Library for Log Analytics and Intelligence

Software and System logs record runtime information about processes executing within a system. These logs have become the most critical and ubiquitous forms of observability data that help developers understand system behavior, monitor system health and resolve issues. However, the volume of logs generated can be humongous (of the order of petabytes per day) especially for complex distributed systems, such as cloud, search engine, social media, etc. This has propelled a lot of research on developing AI-based log based analytics and intelligence solutions that can process huge volume of raw logs and generate insights. In order to enable users to perform multiple types of AI-based log analysis tasks in a uniform manner, we introduce LogAI (https://github.com/salesforce/logai), a one-stop open source library for log analytics and intelligence. LogAI supports tasks such as log summarization, log clustering and log anomaly detection. It adopts the OpenTelemetry data model, to enable compatibility with different log management platforms. LogAI provides a unified model interface and provides popular time-series, statistical learning and deep learning models. Alongside this, LogAI also provides an out-of-the-box GUI for users to conduct interactive analysis. With LogAI, we can also easily benchmark popular deep learning algorithms for log anomaly detection without putting in redundant effort to process the logs. We have opensourced LogAI to cater to a wide range of applications benefiting both academic research and industrial prototyping.

Anonymous Pattern Molecular Fingerprint and its Applications on Property Identification

Molecular fingerprints are significant cheminformatics tools to map molecules into vectorial space according to their characteristics in diverse functional groups, atom sequences, and other topological structures. In this paper, we set out to investigate a novel molecular fingerprint \emph{Anonymous-FP} that possesses abundant perception about the underlying interactions shaped in small, medium, and large molecular scale links. In detail, the possible inherent atom chains are sampled from each molecule and are extended in a certain anonymous pattern. After that, the molecular fingerprint \emph{Anonymous-FP} is encoded in virtue of the Natural Language Processing technique \emph{PV-DBOW}. \emph{Anonymous-FP} is studied on molecular property identification and has shown valuable advantages such as rich information content, high experimental performance, and full structural significance. During the experimental verification, the scale of the atom chain or its anonymous manner matters significantly to the overall representation ability of \emph{Anonymous-FP}. Generally, the typical scale $r = 8$ enhances the performance on a series of real-world molecules, and specifically, the accuracy could level up to above $93\%$ on all NCI datasets.

Deep learning-based photoacoustic imaging of vascular network through thick porous media

Photoacoustic imaging (PAI) is a promising approach to realize in vivo transcranial cerebral vascular imaging. However, the strong attenuation and distortion of the photoacoustic wave caused by the thick porous skull greatly affect the imaging quality. In this study, we designed a convolutional neural network (CNN) with a U-Net architecture to extract the effective photoacoustic information hidden in the speckle patterns; obtained vascular network images datasets under porous media through simulation and experiment, and trained the network weights respectively. The results show that the proposed neural network can learn the mapping relationship between the speckle pattern and the target; extract the photoacoustic signals of some vessels submerged in noise to reconstruct high-quality images with a sharp outline of the vessel and clean background. Compared with the traditional photoacoustic reconstruction method, the deep learning-based reconstruction algorithms can achieve better performance, the mean absolute error (MAE), Structural SIMilarity (SSIM) and peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) of reconstructed images have been greatly improved. In conclusion, the proposed neural network can effectively extract valid information from highly blurred speckle patterns for the rapid reconstruction of target images, which offers promising applications in transcranial photoacoustic imaging.

Deep learning enables accurate sound redistribution via nonlocal metasurfaces

Conventional acoustic metasurfaces are constructed with gradiently ``local'' phase shift profiles provided by subunits. The local strategy implies the ignorance of the mutual coupling between subunits, which limits the efficiency of targeted sound manipulation, especially in complex environments. By taking into account the ``nonlocal'' interaction among subunits, nonlocal metasurface offers an opportunity for accurate control of sound propagation, but the requirement of the consideration of gathering coupling among all subunits, not just the nearest-neighbor coupling, greatly increases the complexity of the system and therefore hinders the explorations of functionalities of nonlocal metasurfaces. In this work, empowered by deep learning algorithms, the complex gathering coupling can be learned efficiently from the preset dataset so that the functionalities of nonlocal metasurfaces can be significantly uncovered. As an example, we demonstrate that nonlocal metasurfaces, which can redirect an incident wave into multi-channel reflections with arbitrary energy ratios, can be accurately predicted by deep learning algorithms. Compared to the theory, the relative error of the energy ratios is less than 1\%. Furthermore, experiments witness three-channel reflection with three types of energy ratios of (1, 0, 0), (1/2, 0, 1/2), and (1/3, 1/3, 1/3), proving the validity of the deep learning enabled nonlocal metasurfaces. Our work might blaze a new trail in the design of acoustic functional devices, especially for the cases containing complex wave-matter interactions.

Physical-Layer Security for Frequency Diverse Array Based Directional Modulation in Fluctuating Two-Ray Fading Channels

The frequency diverse array (FDA) based directional modulation (DM) technology plays an important role in the implementation of the physical-layer security (PLS) transmission of 5G and beyond communication system. In order to meet the tremendous increase in mobile data traffic, a new design consuming less memory for the FDA-DM-based PLS transmission is urgently demanded. In this paper, an analytical symmetrical multi-carrier FDA model is proposed in three dimensions, namely, range, azimuth angle, and elevation angle, which differs from the conventional analytical approach with only range and azimuth angle considered. Then, a single-point (SP) artificial noise (AN) aided FDA-DM scheme is proposed, which reduces memory consumption of FDA-DM systems significantly compared with the conventional zero-forcing (ZF) and singular value decomposition (SVD) approaches. Moreover, the PLS performance of the proposed low-memory-consumption FDA-DM scheme is analyzed in fluctuating two-ray (FTR) fading channels for the first time, including bit error rate (BER), secrecy rate (SR), and secrecy outage probability (SOP). More importantly, the closed-form expressions for the lower bound of the average SR and the upper bound of the SOP are derived, respectively. The effectiveness of the analytical expressions is verified by numerical simulations. This work opens a way to lower the memory requirements for the DM-based PLS transmission of 5G and beyond communication system.

A Two-Ray Multipath Model for Frequency Diverse Array-Based Directional Modulation in MISOME Wiretap Channels

A two-ray multipath model for frequency diverse array (FDA)-based directional modulation (DM) is proposed in multi-input single-output multi-eavesdropper (MISOME) wiretap channels for the first time. The excitation factors of the FDA and the weighting coefficients of the inserted artificial noise (AN) are jointly designed in a way which imposes no impact on the desired receiver while simultaneously distorting the received signals of eavesdroppers. Secrecy rate is analyzed for the proposed two-ray multipath FDA-based DM model. Numerical simulations verify the capability of physical layer secure (PLS) transmissions of the proposed FDA-DM model in two-ray multipath MISOME wiretap channels.

WFRFT-aided Power-efficient Multi-beam Directional Modulation Schemes Based on Frequency Diverse Array

The artificial noise (AN) aided multi-beam directional modulation (DM) technology is capable of wireless physical layer secure (PLS) transmissions for multiple desired receivers in free space. The application of AN, however, makes it less power-efficient for such a DM system. To address this problem, the weighted fractional Fourier transform (WFRFT) technology is employed in this paper to achieve power-efficient multi-beam DM transmissions. Specifically, a power-efficient multi-beam WFRFT-DM scheme with cooperative receivers and a power-efficient multi-beam WFRFT-DM scheme with independent receivers are proposed based on frequency diverse array (FDA), respectively. The bit error rate (BER), secrecy rate, and robustness of the proposed multi-beam WFRFT-DM schemes are analyzed. Simulations demonstrate that 1) the proposed multi-beam WFRFT-DM schemes are more power-efficient than the conventional multi-beam AN-DM scheme; 2) the transmission security can also be guaranteed even if the eavesdroppers are located close to or the same as the desired receivers; and 3) the proposed multi-beam WFRFT-DM schemes are capable of independent transmissions for different desired receivers with different modulations.

SVD-Aided Multi-Beam Directional Modulation Scheme Based on Frequency Diverse Array

With the assistance of singular value decomposition (SVD), a multi-beam directional modulation (DM) scheme based on symmetrical multi-carrier frequency diverse array (FDA) is proposed. The proposed DM scheme is capable of achieving range-angle dependent physical layer secure (PLS) transmissions in free space with much lower complexity than the conventional zero-forcing (ZF) method. Theoretical and simulated results about secrecy rate and complexity verify the improved computational efficiency and considerable memory savings despite a very small penalty of secrecy rate.

Scalable, "Dip-and-dry" Fabrication of a Wide-Angle Plasmonic Selective Absorber for High-efficiency Solar-Thermal Energy Conversion

A galvanic displacement reaction-based, room-temperature "dip-and-dry" technique is demonstrated for fabricating selectively solar-absorbing plasmonic nanostructure-coated foils (PNFs). The technique, which allows for facile tuning of the PNFs' spectral reflectance to suit different radiative and thermal environments, yields PNFs which exhibit excellent, wide-angle solar absorptance (0.96 at 15°, to 0.97 at 35°, to 0.79 at 80°) and low hemispherical thermal emittance (0.10) without the aid of antireflection coatings. The thermal emittance is on par with those of notable selective solar absorbers (SSAs) in the literature, while the wide-angle solar absorptance surpasses those of previously reported SSAs with comparable optical selectivities. In addition, the PNFs show promising mechanical and thermal stabilities at temperatures of up to 200°C. Along with the performance of the PNFs, the simplicity, inexpensiveness and environment-friendliness of the "dip-and-dry" technique makes it an appealing alternative to current methods for fabricating selective solar absorbers.

High-Resolution Angle Tracking for Mobile Wideband Millimeter-Wave Systems with Antenna Array Calibration

Millimeter-wave (mmWave) systems use directional beams to support high-rate data communications. Small misalignment between the transmit and receive beams (e.g., due to the mobility) can result in significant drop of the received signal quality especially in line-of-sight communication channels. In this paper, we propose and evaluate high-resolution angle tracking strategies for wideband mmWave systems with mobility. We custom design pairs of auxiliary beams as the tracking beams, and use them to capture the angle variations, towards which the steering directions of the data beams are adjusted. Different from conventional beam tracking designs, the proposed framework neither depends on the angle variation model nor requires an on-grid assumption. For practical implementation of the proposed methods, we examine the impact of the array calibration errors on the auxiliary beam pair design. Numerical results reveal that by employing the proposed methods, good angle tracking performance can be achieved under various antenna array configurations, channel models, and mobility conditions.
