Structural and magnetic properties of CeZnAl$_3$ single crystals

We have synthesized single crystals of CeZnAl$_3$, which is a new member of the family of the Ce-based intermetallics Ce$TX_3$ ($T$ = transition metal, $X$= Si, Ge, Al), crystallizing in the non-centrosymmetric tetragonal BaNiSn$_3$-type structure. Magnetization, specific heat and resistivity measurements all show that CeZnAl$_3$ orders magnetically below around 4.4 K. Furthermore, magnetization measurements exhibit a hysteresis loop at low temperatures and fields, indicating the presence of a ferromagnetic component in the magnetic state. This points to a different nature of the magnetism in CeZnAl$_3$ compared to the other isostructural Ce$T$Al$_3$ compounds. Resistivity measurements under pressures up to 1.8 GPa show a moderate suppression of the ordering temperature with pressure, suggesting that measurements to higher pressures are required to look for quantum critical behavior.

Quenching of fluorescence for linear alkylbenzene

Linear alkylbenzene (LAB) based liquid scintillator is adopted as the central detector for the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) liquid scintillator detectors. A quenching factor measurement instrument is designed based on the Compton scattering process. Two different quenchers for the liquid scintillator have been investigated and the result shows that the scintillation light of the JUNO liquid scintillator can be quenched to a level. The emission spectrum with the absence of the quencher is also showing a desired behavior.

Proper dissipative torques in antiferromagnetic dynamics

There is little doubt that the magnetization dynamics of ferromagnetic systems is governed by the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation or its generalization with various spin torques. In contrast, there are several sets of dynamic equations for two-sublattice antiferromagnets (AFMs) in literature that have different forms of dissipative torques and no proper dynamic equations for multi-sublattice AFMs and ferrimagnets in general. Here we introduce the general Rayleigh dissipation functional into the Lagrange equation and derive the proper form of the dissipative torques in the phenomenological equations for the AFMs with multiple sublattices. A new type of dissipative torque arising from inter-sublattice drag effect is discovered that has important influences on magnon lifetime and domain wall motion. In particular, our theory unifies different dynamic equations of AFMs in literature.

Polarization entanglement purification of nonlocal microwave photons based on the cross-Kerr effect in circuit QED

Microwave photons have become very important qubits in quantum communication as the first quantum satellite has been launched successfully. Therefore, it is a necessary and meaningful task for ensuring the high security and efficiency of microwave-based quantum communication in practice. Here, we present an original polarization entanglement purification protocol for nonlocal microwave photons based on the cross-Kerr effect in circuit quantum electrodynamics (QED). Our protocol can solve the problem that the purity of maximally entangled states used for constructing quantum channels will decrease due to decoherence from environment noise. This task is accomplished by means of the polarization parity-check quantum nondemolition (QND) detector, the bit-flipping operation, and the linear microwave elements. The QND detector is composed of several cross-Kerr effect systems which can be realized by coupling two superconducting transmission line resonators to a superconducting molecule with the N-type level structure. We give the applicable experimental parameters of QND measurement system in circuit QED and analyze the fidelities. Our protocol has good applications in long-distance quantum communication assisted by microwave photons in the future, such as satellite quantum communication.

Hybrid Precoder and Combiner Design with Low Resolution Phase Shifters in mmWave MIMO Systems

Millimeter wave (mmWave) communications have been considered as a key technology for next generation cellular systems and Wi-Fi networks because of its advances in providing orders-of-magnitude wider bandwidth than current wireless networks. Economical and energy efficient analog/digial hybrid precoding and combining transceivers have been often proposed for mmWave massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems to overcome the severe propagation loss of mmWave channels. One major shortcoming of existing solutions lies in the assumption of infinite or high-resolution phase shifters (PSs) to realize the analog beamformers. However, low-resolution PSs are typically adopted in practice to reduce the hardware cost and power consumption. Motivated by this fact, in this paper, we investigate the practical design of hybrid precoders and combiners with low-resolution PSs in mmWave MIMO systems. In particular, we propose an iterative algorithm which successively designs the low-resolution analog precoder and combiner pair for each data stream, aiming at conditionally maximizing the spectral efficiency. Then, the digital precoder and combiner are computed based on the obtained effective baseband channel to further enhance the spectral efficiency. In an effort to achieve an even more hardware-efficient large antenna array, we also investigate the design of hybrid beamformers with one-bit resolution (binary) PSs, and present a novel binary analog precoder and combiner optimization algorithm with quadratic complexity in the number of antennas. The proposed low-resolution hybrid beamforming design is further extended to multiuser MIMO communication systems. Simulation results demonstrate the performance advantages of the proposed algorithms compared to existing low-resolution hybrid beamforming designs, particularly for the one-bit resolution PS scenario.

Mode-Dependent Damping in Metallic Antiferromagnets Due to Inter-Sublattice Spin Pumping

Damping in magnetization dynamics characterizes the dissipation of magnetic energy and is essential for improving the performance of spintronics-based devices. While the damping of ferromagnets has been well studied and can be artificially controlled in practice, the damping parameters of antiferromagnetic materials are nevertheless little known for their physical mechanisms or numerical values. Here we calculate the damping parameters in antiferromagnetic dynamics using the generalized scattering theory of magnetization dissipation combined with the first-principles transport computation. For the PtMn, IrMn, PdMn and FeMn metallic antiferromagnets, the damping coefficient associated with the motion of magnetization ($α_m$) is one to three orders of magnitude larger than the other damping coefficient associated with the variation of the Néel order ($α_n$), in sharp contrast to the assumptions made in the literature.

Quenching Measurements and Modeling of a Boron-Loaded Organic Liquid Scintillator

Organic liquid scintillators are used in a wide variety of applications in experimental nuclear and particle physics. Boron-loaded scintillators are particularly useful for detecting neutron captures, due to the high thermal neutron capture cross section of $^{10}$B. These scintillators are commonly used in neutron detectors, including the DarkSide-50 neutron veto, where the neutron may produce a signal when it scatters off protons in the scintillator or when it captures on $^{10}$B. Reconstructing the energy of these recoils is complicated by scintillation quenching. Understanding how nuclear recoils are quenched in these scintillators is an important and difficult problem. In this article, we present a set of measurements of neutron-induced proton recoils in a boron-loaded organic liquid scintillator at recoil energies ranging from 57--467 keV, and we compare these measurements to predictions from different quenching models. We find that a modified Birks' model whose denominator is quadratic in $dE/dx$ best describes the measurements, with $χ^2$/NDF$=1.6$. This result will help model nuclear recoil scintillation in similar detectors and can be used to improve their neutron tagging efficiency.

Toward QoE-Driven Dynamic Control Scheme Switching for Time-Delayed Teleoperation Systems: A Dedicated Case Study

Networked teleoperation with haptic feedback is a prime example for the emerging Tactile Internet, which requires a careful orchestration of haptic communication and control. One major challenge in this context is how to maximize the user's quality-of-experience (QoE) while ensuring at the same time the stability of the global control loop in the presence of communication delay. In this paper, we propose a dynamic control scheme switching strategy for teleoperation systems, which maximizes the QoE for time-varying communication delay. In order to validate the feasibility of the proposed approach, we perform a dedicated case study for a virtual teleoperation environment consisting of a one-dimensional spring-damper system, and conduct extensive subjective tests under various delay conditions for two control schemes: (1) teleoperation with the time-domain passivity approach (TDPA), which is highly delay-sensitive but supports highly dynamic interaction between the operator and a potentially quickly changing remote environment; (2) model-mediated teleoperation (MMT), which is tolerable to relatively larger communication delays, but unsuitable for quickly changing, highly dynamic remote environments. For both schemes, we use recently proposed extensions, which incorporate perceptual data reduction to reduce the required packet rate between the operator and the teleoperator. One key contribution of this paper lies in the exploration of the intrinsic relationship among QoE, communication delay and the control schemes which provides a fundamental guidance, not only to this research, but also to the future joint optimization of communication and control for time-delayed teleoperation systems.

Joint Hybrid Precoder and Combiner Design for mmWave Spatial Multiplexing Transmission

Millimeter-wave (mmWave) communications have been considered as a key technology for future 5G wireless networks because of the orders-of-magnitude wider bandwidth than current cellular bands. In this paper, we consider the problem of codebook-based joint analog-digital hybrid precoder and combiner design for spatial multiplexing transmission in a mmWave multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system. We propose to jointly select analog precoder and combiner pair for each data stream successively aiming at maximizing the channel gain while suppressing the interference between different data streams. After all analog precoder/combiner pairs have been determined, we can obtain the effective baseband channel. Then, the digital precoder and combiner are computed based on the obtained effective baseband channel to further mitigate the interference and maximize the sum-rate. Simulation results demonstrate that our proposed algorithm exhibits prominent advantages in combating interference between different data streams and offer satisfactory performance improvement compared to the existing codebook-based hybrid beamforming schemes.

Hybrid Precoder and Combiner Design with One-Bit Quantized Phase Shifters in mmWave MIMO Systems

Analog/digital hybrid precoder and combiner have been widely used in millimeter wave (mmWave) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems due to its energy-efficient and economic superiorities. Infinite resolution of phase shifters (PSs) for the analog beamformer can achieve very close performance compared to the full-digital scheme but will result in high complexity and intensive power consumption. Thus, more cost effective and energy efficient low resolution PSs are typically used in practical mmWave MIMO systems. In this paper, we consider the joint hybrid precoder and combiner design with one-bit quantized PSs in mmWave MIMO systems. We propose to firstly design the analog precoder and combiner pair for each data stream successively, aiming at conditionally maximizing the spectral efficiency. We present a novel binary analog precoder and combiner optimization algorithm under a Rank-1 approximation of the interference-included equivalent channel with lower than quadratic complexity. Then the digital precoder and combiner are computed based on the obtained baseband effective channel to further enhance the spectral efficiency. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm outperforms the existing one-bit PSs based hybrid beamforming scheme.

Iterative Hybrid Precoder and Combiner Design for mmWave MIMO-OFDM Systems

This paper investigates the problem of hybrid precoder and combiner design for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems operating in millimeter-wave (mmWave) bands. We propose a novel iterative scheme to design the codebook-based analog precoder and combiner in forward and reverse channels. During each iteration, we apply compressive sensing (CS) technology to efficiently estimate the equivalent MIMO-OFDM mmWave channel. Then, the analog precoder or combiner is obtained based on the orthogonal matching pursuit (OMP) algorithm to alleviate the interference between different data streams as well as maximize the spectral efficiency. The digital precoder and combiner are finally obtained based on the effective baseband channel to further enhance the spectral efficiency. Simulation results demonstrate the proposed iterative hybrid precoder and combiner algorithm has significant performance advantages.

Transmit Filter and Artificial Noise Design for Secure MIMO-OFDM Systems

Physical layer security has been considered as an important security approach in wireless communications to protect legitimate transmission from passive eavesdroppers. This paper investigates the physical layer security of a wireless multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) communication system in the presence of a multiple-antenna eavesdropper. We first propose a transmit-filter-assisted secure MIMO-OFDM system which can destroy the orthogonality of eavesdropper's signals. Our proposed transmit filter can disturb the reception of eavesdropper while maintaining the quality of legitimate transmission. Then, we propose another artificial noise (AN)-assisted secure MIMO-OFDM system to further improve the security of the legitimate transmission. The time-domain AN signal is designed to disturb the reception of eavesdropper while the legitimate transmission will not be affected. Simulation results are presented to demonstrate the security performance of the proposed transmit filter design and AN-assisted scheme in the MIMO-OFDM system.

Hybrid Procoder and Combiner Design for Secure Transmission in mmWave MIMO Systems

Millimeter wave (mmWave) communications have been considered as a key technology for future 5G wireless networks. In order to overcome the severe propagation loss of mmWave channel, mmWave multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with analog/digital hybrid precoding and combining transceiver architecture have been widely considered. However, physical layer security (PLS) in mmWave MIMO systems and the secure hybrid beamformer design have not been well investigated. In this paper, we consider the problem of hybrid precoder and combiner design for secure transmission in mmWave MIMO systems in order to protect the legitimate transmission from eavesdropping. When eavesdropper's channel state information (CSI) is known, we first propose a joint analog precoder and combiner design algorithm which can prevent the information leakage to the eavesdropper. Then, the digital precoder and combiner are computed based on the obtained effective baseband channel to further maximize the secrecy rate. Next, if prior knowledge of the eavesdropper's CSI is unavailable, we develop an artificial noise (AN)-based hybrid beamforming approach, which can jam eavesdropper's reception while maintaining the quality-of-service (QoS) of intended receiver at the pre-specified level. Simulation results demonstrate that our proposed algorithms offer significant secrecy performance improvement compared with other hybrid beamforming algorithms.

Noisy Softplus: an activation function that enables SNNs to be trained as ANNs

We extended the work of proposed activation function, Noisy Softplus, to fit into training of layered up spiking neural networks (SNNs). Thus, any ANN employing Noisy Softplus neurons, even of deep architecture, can be trained simply by the traditional algorithm, for example Back Propagation (BP), and the trained weights can be directly used in the spiking version of the same network without any conversion. Furthermore, the training method can be generalised to other activation units, for instance Rectified Linear Units (ReLU), to train deep SNNs off-line. This research is crucial to provide an effective approach for SNN training, and to increase the classification accuracy of SNNs with biological characteristics and to close the gap between the performance of SNNs and ANNs.

Universal quantum gates for photon-atom hybrid systems assisted by bad cavities

We present two deterministic schemes for constructing a CNOT gate and a Toffoli gate on photon-atom and photon-atom-atom hybrid quantum systems assisted by bad cavities, respectively. They are achieved by cavity-assisted photon scattering and work in the intermediate coupling region with bad cavities, which relaxes the difficulty of their implementation in experiment. Also, bad cavities are feasible for fast quantum operations and reading out information. Compared with previous works, our schemes do not need any auxiliary qubits and measurements. Moreover, the schematic setups for these gates are simple, especially that for our Toffoli gate as only a quarter wave packet is used to interact the photon with each of the atoms every time. These atom-cavity systems can be used as the quantum nodes in long-distance quantum communication as their relatively long coherence time is suitable for multi-time operations between the photon and the system. Our calculations show that the average fidelities and efficiencies of our two universal hybrid quantum gates are high with current experimental technology.

Study of a sealed high gas pressure THGEM detector and response of Alpha particle spectra

A sealed high gas pressure detector working in pure argon is assembled. It consists of a 5 cm $\times$ 5 cm PCB THGEM (THick Gaseous Electron Multipliers). The detector structure and experimental setup are described. The performances under high pressure of 2 atm mainly consist in selecting optimal voltages for ionization region and induction region. The dependence of the shape of Alpha particle spectra measured with relative gas gain on gas pressure (1.3 $\sim$ 2.0 atm) has been studied. The 8 groups of relative gas gain versus working voltage of THGEM expressed by weighting filed $E/P$ are normalized, being consistent with theory. The results show that the air tightness of the chamber is good measured by a sensitive barometer and checked with gas gain. The experimental results are compared with Monte Carlo simulation on energy deposition without gas gain involved.

Hyperentanglement purification for two-photon six-qubit quantum systems

Recently, two-photon six-qubit hyperentangled states were produced in experiment and they can improve the channel capacity of quantum communication largely. Here we present a scheme for the hyperentanglement purification of nonlocal two-photon systems in three degrees of freedom (DOFs), including the polarization, the first-longitudinal-momentum, and the second longitudinal momentum DOFs. Our hyperentanglement purification protocol (hyper-EPP) is constructed with two steps resorting to parity-check quantum nondemolition measurement on the three DOFs and SWAP gates, respectively. With these two steps, the bit-flip errors in the three DOFs can be corrected efficiently. Also, we show that using SWAP gates is a universal method for hyper-EPP in the polarization DOF and multiple longitudinal momentum DOFs. The implementation of our hyper-EPP is assisted by nitrogen-vacancy centers in optical microcavities, which could be achieved with current techniques. It is useful for long-distance high-capacity quantum communication with two-photon six-qubit hyperentanglement.

Random-Training-Assisted Pilot Spoofing Detection and Secure Transmission

The pilot spoofing attack is considered as an active eavesdropping activity launched by an adversary during the reverse channel training phase. By transmitting the same pilot signal as the legitimate user, the pilot spoofing attack is able to degrade the quality of legitimate transmission and, more severely, facilitate eavesdropping. In an effort to detect the pilot spoofing attack and minimize its damages, in this paper we propose a novel random-training-assisted (RTA) pilot spoofing detection algorithm. In particular, we develop a new training mechanism by adding a random training phase after the conventional pilot training phase. By examining the difference of the estimated legitimate channels during these two phases, the pilot spoofing attack can be detected accurately. If no spoofing attack is detected, we present a computationally efficient channel estimation enhancement algorithm to further improve the channel estimation accuracy. If the existence of the pilot spoofing attack is identified, a zero-forcing (ZF)-based secure transmission scheme is proposed to protect the confidential information from the active eavesdropper. Extensive simulation results demonstrate that the proposed RTA scheme can achieve efficient pilot spoofing detection, accurate channel estimation, and secure transmission.
