Biomass Estimation and Uncertainty Quantification from Tree Height

We propose a tree-level biomass estimation model approximating allometric equations by LiDAR data. Since tree crown diameters estimation is challenging from spaceborne LiDAR measurements, we develop a model to correlate tree height with biomass on the individual tree level employing a Gaussian process regressor. In order to validate the proposed model, a set of 8,342 samples on tree height, trunk diameter, and biomass has been assembled. It covers seven biomes globally present. We reference our model to four other models based on both, the Jucker data and our own dataset. Although our approach deviates from standard biomass-height-diameter models, we demonstrate the Gaussian process regression model as a viable alternative. In addition, we decompose the uncertainty of tree biomass estimates into the model- and fitting-based contributions. We verify the Gaussian process regressor has the capacity to reduce the fitting uncertainty down to below 5%. Exploiting airborne LiDAR measurements and a field inventory survey on the ground, a stand-level (or plot-level) study confirms a low relative error of below 1% for our model. The Solar Upper Transition Region Imager (SUTRI) onboard the SATech-01 satellite

The Solar Upper Transition Region Imager (SUTRI) onboard the Space Advanced Technology demonstration satellite (SATech-01), which was launched to a sun-synchronous orbit at a height of 500 km in July 2022, aims to test the on-orbit performance of our newly developed Sc-Si multi-layer reflecting mirror and the 2kx2k EUV CMOS imaging camera and to take full-disk solar images at the Ne VII 46.5 nm spectral line with a filter width of 3 nm. SUTRI employs a Ritchey-Chretien optical system with an aperture of 18 cm. The on-orbit observations show that SUTRI images have a field of view of 41.6'x41.6' and a moderate spatial resolution of 8" without an image stabilization system. The normal cadence of SUTRI images is 30 s and the solar observation time is about 16 hours each day because the earth eclipse time accounts for about 1/3 of SATech-01's orbit period. Approximately 15 GB data is acquired each day and made available online after processing. SUTRI images are valuable as the Ne VII 46.5 nm line is formed at a temperature regime of 0.5 MK in the solar atmosphere, which has rarely been sampled by existing solar imagers. SUTRI observations will establish connections between structures in the lower solar atmosphere and corona, and advance our understanding of various types of solar activity such as flares, filament eruptions, coronal jets and coronal mass ejections.

Two-Loop Electroweak Corrections with Fermion Loops to $e^+ e^- \to ZH$

We present a complete calculation of the next-to-next-to-leading (NNLO) electroweak corrections involving closed fermion loops to the $e^+ e^- \to ZH$ process. This has been achieved by using a semi-numerical technique for the two-loop vertex and box diagrams, which is based on Feynman parameters and dispersion relations for one of the two sub-loops. UV divergences are treated with suitable subtraction terms. Numerical results for the unpolarized differential and integrated cross-section at center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}=240~\text{GeV}$ are provided. Combining the NNLO contributions with one and two closed fermions loops, they are found to increase the NLO cross-section by 0.7\%.

Unconventional Charge-density-wave Order in a Dilute d-band Semiconductor

Electron-lattice coupling effects in low dimensional materials give rise to charge density wave (CDW) order and phase transitions. These phenomena are critical ingredients for superconductivity and predominantly occur in metallic model systems such as doped cuprates, transition metal dichalcogenides, and more recently, in Kagome lattice materials. However, CDW in semiconducting systems, specifically at the limit of low carrier concentration region, is uncommon. Here, we combine electrical transport, synchrotron X-ray diffraction and optical spectroscopy to discover CDW order in a quasi-one-dimensional (1D), dilute d-band semiconductor, BaTiS3, which suggests the existence of strong electron-phonon coupling. The CDW state further undergoes an unusual transition featuring a sharp increase in carrier mobility. Our work establishes BaTiS3 as a unique platform to study the CDW physics in the dilute filling limit to explore novel electronic phases.

Evidence for a single-layer van der Waals multiferroic

Multiferroic materials have garnered wide interest for their exceptional static and dynamical magnetoelectric properties. In particular, type-II multiferroics exhibit an inversion-symmetry-breaking magnetic order which directly induces a ferroelectric polarization through various mechanisms, such as the spin-current or the inverse Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya effect. This intrinsic coupling between the magnetic and dipolar order parameters results in record-strength magnetoelectric effects. Two dimensional materials possessing such intrinsic multiferroic properties have been long sought for harnessing magnetoelectric coupling in nanoelectronic devices. Here, we report the discovery of type-II multiferroic order in a single atomic layer of the transition metal-based van der Waals material NiI2. The multiferroic state of NiI2 is characterized by a proper-screw spin helix with given handedness, which couples to the charge degrees of freedom to produce a chirality-controlled electrical polarization. We use circular dichroic Raman measurements to directly probe the magneto-chiral ground state and its electromagnon modes originating from dynamic magnetoelectric coupling. Using birefringence and second-harmonic generation measurements, we detect a highly anisotropic electronic state simultaneously breaking three-fold rotational and inversion symmetry, and supporting polar order. The evolution of the optical signatures as a function of temperature and layer number surprisingly reveals an ordered magnetic, polar state that persists down to the ultrathin limit of monolayer NiI2. These observations establish NiI2 and transition metal dihalides as a new platform for studying emergent multiferroic phenomena, chiral magnetic textures and ferroelectricity in the two-dimensional limit.

Mapping Diffuse Emission in Lyman UV band

The CAFE (Census of warm-hot intergalactic medium, Accretion, and Feedback Explorer) and LyRIC (Lyman UV Radiation from Interstellar medium and Circum-galactic medium) have been proposed to the space agencies in China respectively. CAFE was first proposed in 2015 as a joint scientific CAS-ESA small space mission. LyRIC was proposed in 2019 as an independent external payload operating on the Chinese Space Station. Both missions are dedicated to mapping the Lyman UV emission (ionized oxygen (O VI) resonance lines at 103.2 and 103.8 nm, and Lyman series) for the diffuse sources in our Galaxy and the circum-galactic mediums of the nearby galaxies. We present the primary science objectives, mission concepts, the enabling technologies, as well as the current status.

An XMCD study of magnetism and valence state in iron-substituted strontium titanate

Room temperature ferromagnetism was characterized for thin films of SrTi$_{0.6}$Fe$_{0.4}$O$_{3-δ}$ grown by pulsed laser deposition on SrTiO$_{3}$ and Si substrates under different oxygen pressures and after annealing under oxygen and vacuum conditions. X-ray magnetic circular dichroism demonstrated that the magnetization originated from Fe$^{2+}$ cations, whereas Fe$^{3+}$ and Ti$^{4+}$ did not contribute. Films with the highest magnetic moment (0.8 μB per Fe) had the highest measured Fe$^{2+}$:Fe${^3+}$ ratio of 0.1 corresponding to the largest concentration of oxygen vacancies (δ = 0.19). Post-growth annealing treatments under oxidizing and reducing conditions demonstrated quenching and partial recovery of magnetism respectively, and a change in Fe valence states. The study elucidates the microscopic origin of magnetism in highly Fe-substituted SrTi$_{1-x}$Fe$_x$O$_{3-δ}$ perovskite oxides and demonstrates that the magnetic moment, which correlates with the relative content of Fe$^{2+}$ and Fe$^{3+}$, can be controlled via the oxygen content, either during growth or by post-growth annealing.

Giant enhancement of interlayer exchange in an ultrathin 2D magnet

Following the recent isolation of monolayer CrI3, there has been a surge of new two-dimensional van der Waals magnetic materials, whose incorporation in van der Waals heterostructures offers a new platform for spintronics, proximity magnetism, and quantum spin liquids. A primary question in this burgeoning field is how exfoliating crystals to the few-layer limit influences their magnetism. Studies on CrI3 have shown a different magnetic ground state for ultrathin exfoliated films but the origin is not yet understood. Here, we use electron tunneling through few-layer crystals of the layered antiferromagnetic insulator CrCl3 to probe its magnetic order, finding a ten-fold enhancement in the interlayer exchange compared to bulk crystals. Moreover, temperature- and polarization-dependent Raman spectroscopy reveal that the crystallographic phase transition of bulk crystals does not occur in exfoliated films. This results in a different low temperature stacking order and, we hypothesize, increased interlayer exchange. Our study provides new insight into the connection between stacking order and interlayer interactions in novel two-dimensional magnets, which may be relevant for correlating stacking faults and mechanical deformations with the magnetic ground states of other more exotic layered magnets, such as RuCl3.

SAR Image Colorization: Converting Single-Polarization to Fully Polarimetric Using Deep Neural Networks

A deep neural networks based method is proposed to convert single polarization grayscale SAR image to fully polarimetric. It consists of two components: a feature extractor network to extract hierarchical multi-scale spatial features of grayscale SAR image, followed by a feature translator network to map spatial feature to polarimetric feature with which the polarimetric covariance matrix of each pixel can be reconstructed. Both qualitative and quantitative experiments with real fully polarimetric data are conducted to show the efficacy of the proposed method. The reconstructed full-pol SAR image agrees well with the true full-pol image. Existing PolSAR applications such as model-based decomposition and unsupervised classification can be applied directly to the reconstructed full-pol SAR images. This framework can be easily extended to reconstruction of full-pol data from compact-pol data. The experiment results also show that the proposed method could be potentially used for interference removal on the cross-polarization channel.

Study of Black Phosphorus Using Angle-Resolved Polarized Raman Spectroscopy with 442 nm Excitation

We investigated 10 to 200 nm thick black phosphorus flakes on SiO2/Si and polyimide substrates by Angle-resolved Polarized Raman spectra (ARPRS) using 442 nm excitation wavelength. The results revealed that ARPRS with 442 nm excitation can provide unambiguous, convenient, non-destructive and fast determination of BP's crystallographic orientation. The substrate and thickness dependencies of Raman spectra and Raman tensor elements were studied. These dependencies were shown to be influenced by Raman excitation laser heating effect. By comparing with in-situ Raman measurements at elevated temperatures, we were able to quantify the laser-heating effect, which is significant and hard to avoid for Raman measurements of BP on polyimide substrates due to the poor thermal conductivity of the substrate. Thermal processing by substrate heating was shown to have a significant impact on BP on SiO2/Si substrate, but not for BP on polyimide due to smaller thermal expansion mismatch. Our results give important insights on Raman Spectroscopy characterizations of BP on different substrates.
