Polarization Enhanced Deep Optical Dipole Trapping of $Λ$-cooled Polar Molecules

We demonstrate loading of SrF molecules into an optical dipole trap (ODT) via in-trap $Λ$-cooling. We find that this cooling can be optimized by a proper choice of relative ODT and $Λ$ beam polarizations. In this optimized configuration, we observe molecules with temperatures as low as 14(1) $μ$K in traps with depths up to 570 $μ$K. With optimized parameters, we transfer $\!\sim\!5$% of molecules from our radio-frequency magneto-optical trap into the ODT, at a density of $\sim\!2\times 10^{9}$ cm$^{-3}$, a phase space density of $\sim\!2\times 10^{-7}$, and with a trap lifetime of $\!\sim\!1$ s.

Electrostatic-lenses position-sensitive TOF MCP detector for beam diagnostics and new scheme for mass measurements at HIAF

A foil-microchannel plate (MCP) detector, which uses electrostatic lenses and possesses both good position and timing resolutions, has been designed and simulated for beam diagnostics and mass measurements at the next-generation heavy-ion-beam facility HIAF in China. Characterized by low energy loss and good performances of timing and position measurements, it would be located at focal planes in fragment separator HFRS for position monitoring, beam turning, B$ρ$ measurement, and trajectory reconstruction. Moreover, it will benefit the building-up of a magnetic-rigidity-energy-loss-time-of-flight (B$ρ$-$Δ$E-TOF) method at HFRS for high-precision in-flight particle identification (PID) of radioactive isotope (RI) beams on an event-by-event basis. Most importantly, the detector can be utilized for in-ring TOF and position measurements, beam-line TOF measurements at two achromatic foci, and position measurements at a dispersive focus of HFRS, thus making it possible to use two complementary mass measurement methods (isochronous mass spectrometry (IMS) at the storage ring SRing and magnetic-rigidity-time-of-flight (B$ρ$-TOF) at the beam-line HFRS) in one single experimental run.

Multistate Tuning of Third Harmonic Generation in Fano-Resonant Hybrid Dielectric Metasurfaces

Hybrid dielectric metasurfaces have emerged as a promising approach to enhancing near field confinement and thus achieving high optical nonlinearity using low loss dielectrics. Additional flexibility in design and fabrication of hybrid metasurfaces allows dynamic control of light, which is value-added for a wider range of applications. Here, we demonstrate a tunable and efficient third harmonic generation (THG) via hybrid metasurfaces with phase change material Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST) deposited on top of amorphous silicon nanostructutes. Fano resonance is excited to confine the incident light inside the hybrid metasurfaces, and an experimental quality factor ($Q$-factor) of 125 is achieved at the fundamental pump wavelength around 1210 nm. We demonstrate the switching between a turn-on state of Fano resonance in the amorphous state of GST and a turn-off state in its crystalline state and also gradual multistate tuning of THG emission at its intermediate state. We achieve a high THG conversion efficiency of $η = 2.9*10^{-6}$ %, which is more than ~32 times of that of a GST-based Fabry-Pèrot cavity under a similar pump laser power, thanks to the enhanced field confinement due to the Fano resonance. Our results show the strong potential of GST-based hybrid dielectric metasurfaces for efficient and tunable nonlinear optical devices.

A Comprehensive Review for MRF and CRF Approaches in Pathology Image Analysis

Pathology image analysis is an essential procedure for clinical diagnosis of many diseases. To boost the accuracy and objectivity of detection, nowadays, an increasing number of computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) system is proposed. Among these methods, random field models play an indispensable role in improving the analysis performance. In this review, we present a comprehensive overview of pathology image analysis based on the markov random fields (MRFs) and conditional random fields (CRFs), which are two popular random field models. Firstly, we introduce the background of two random fields and pathology images. Secondly, we summarize the basic mathematical knowledge of MRFs and CRFs from modelling to optimization. Then, a thorough review of the recent research on the MRFs and CRFs of pathology images analysis is presented. Finally, we investigate the popular methodologies in the related works and discuss the method migration among CAD field.

FedSup: A Communication-Efficient Federated Learning Fatigue Driving Behaviors Supervision Framework

With the proliferation of edge smart devices and the Internet of Vehicles (IoV) technologies, intelligent fatigue detection has become one of the most-used methods in our daily driving. To improve the performance of the detection model, a series of techniques have been developed. However, existing work still leaves much to be desired, such as privacy disclosure and communication cost. To address these issues, we propose FedSup, a client-edge-cloud framework for privacy and efficient fatigue detection. Inspired by the federated learning technique, FedSup intelligently utilizes the collaboration between client, edge, and cloud server to realizing dynamic model optimization while protecting edge data privacy. Moreover, to reduce the unnecessary system communication overhead, we further propose a Bayesian convolutional neural network (BCNN) approximation strategy on the clients and an uncertainty weighted aggregation algorithm on the cloud to enhance the central model training efficiency. Extensive experiments demonstrate that the FedSup framework is suitable for IoV scenarios and outperforms other mainstream methods.

The Design of the User Interfaces for Privacy Enhancements for Android

We present the design and design rationale for the user interfaces for Privacy Enhancements for Android (PE for Android). These UIs are built around two core ideas, namely that developers should explicitly declare the purpose of why sensitive data is being used, and these permission-purpose pairs should be split by first party and third party uses. We also present a taxonomy of purposes and ways of how these ideas can be deployed in the existing Android ecosystem.

Recent Advances in Adversarial Training for Adversarial Robustness

Adversarial training is one of the most effective approaches defending against adversarial examples for deep learning models. Unlike other defense strategies, adversarial training aims to promote the robustness of models intrinsically. During the last few years, adversarial training has been studied and discussed from various aspects. A variety of improvements and developments of adversarial training are proposed, which were, however, neglected in existing surveys. For the first time in this survey, we systematically review the recent progress on adversarial training for adversarial robustness with a novel taxonomy. Then we discuss the generalization problems in adversarial training from three perspectives. Finally, we highlight the challenges which are not fully tackled and present potential future directions.

Super-exponential scrambling of Out-of-time-ordered correlators

Out-of-time-ordered correlators (OTOCs) are an effective tool in characterizing black hole chaos, many-body thermalization and quantum dynamics instability. Previous research findings have shown that the OTOCs' exponential growth (EG) marks the limit for quantum systems. However, we report in this letter a periodically-modulated nonlinear Schrödinger system, in which we interestingly find a novel way of information scrambling: super-EG. We show that the quantum OTOCs' growth, which stems from the quantum chaotic dynamics, will increase in a super-exponential way. We also find that in the classical limit, the hyper-chaos revealed by a linearly-increasing Lyapunov exponent actually triggers the super-EG of classical OTOCs. The results in this paper break the restraints of EG as the limit for quantum systems, which give us new insight into the nature of information scrambling in various fields of physics from black hole to many-body system.

Characterizing the excited-state quantum phase transition via the dynamical and statistical properties of the diagonal entropy

Using the diagonal entropy, we analyze the dynamical signatures of the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick (LMG) model excited-state quantum phase transition (ESQPT). We first show that the time evolution of the diagonal entropy behaves as an efficient indicator of the presence of an ESQPT. We further consider the diagonal entropy as a random variable over a certain time interval and we find that its associated probability distribution provides a clear distinction between the different phases of ESQPT. We observe that the probability distribution of the diagonal entropy at the ESQPT critical point has an universal form, well described by a beta distribution, and we demonstrate that a reliable detection of the ESQPT can be obtained from the diagonal entropy central moments.

A bottom-up quantification of flexibility potential from the thermal energy storage in electric space heating

Non-generating resources such as thermostatically controlled loads (TCLs) can arbitrage energy prices and provide balancing reserves when aggregated due to their thermal energy storage capacity. Based on a performed survey of Swedish single- and two-family dwellings with electric heating, this paper quantifies the potential of TCLs to provide reserves to the power system in Sweden. To this end, dwellings with heat pumps and direct electric heaters are modeled as thermal energy storage equivalents that can be included in a linear two-stage problem formulation. We approach the operational flexibility of the TCLs by modeling a risk-averse aggregator that controls decentralized TCLs and aims to maximize its own profit. The results show a potential of 2 GW/0.1Hz averaged over a year, and up to 6.4 GW/0.1Hz peak capacity. Based on a sensitivity analysis we derive policy implications regarding market timing and activation signal.

Optimizing Information Freshness in Two-Hop Status Update Systems under a Resource Constraint

In this paper, we investigate the age minimization problem for a two-hop relay system, under a resource constraint on the average number of forwarding operations at the relay. We first design an optimal policy by modelling the considered scheduling problem as a constrained Markov decision process (CMDP) problem. Based on the observed multi-threshold structure of the optimal policy, we then devise a low-complexity double threshold relaying (DTR) policy with only two thresholds, one for relay's AoI and the other one for the age gain between destination and relay. We derive approximate closed-form expressions of the average AoI at the destination, and the average number of forwarding operations at the relay for the DTR policy, by modelling the tangled evolution of age at relay and destination as a Markov chain (MC). Numerical results validate all the theoretical analysis, and show that the low-complexity DTR policy can achieve near optimal performance compared with the optimal CMDP-based policy. Moreover, the relay should always consider the threshold for its local age to maintain a low age at the destination. When the resource constraint is relatively tight, it further needs to consider the threshold on the age gain to ensure that only those packets that can decrease destination's age dramatically will be forwarded.

Electron-Ion Collider in China

Lepton scattering is an established ideal tool for studying inner structure of small particles such as nucleons as well as nuclei. As a future high energy nuclear physics project, an Electron-ion collider in China (EicC) has been proposed. It will be constructed based on an upgraded heavy-ion accelerator, High Intensity heavy-ion Accelerator Facility (HIAF) which is currently under construction, together with a new electron ring. The proposed collider will provide highly polarized electrons (with a polarization of $\sim$80%) and protons (with a polarization of $\sim$70%) with variable center of mass energies from 15 to 20 GeV and the luminosity of (2-3) $\times$ 10$^{33}$ cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$. Polarized deuterons and Helium-3, as well as unpolarized ion beams from Carbon to Uranium, will be also available at the EicC. The main foci of the EicC will be precision measurements of the structure of the nucleon in the sea quark region, including 3D tomography of nucleon; the partonic structure of nuclei and the parton interaction with the nuclear environment; the exotic states, especially those with heavy flavor quark contents. In addition, issues fundamental to understanding the origin of mass could be addressed by measurements of heavy quarkonia near-threshold production at the EicC. In order to achieve the above-mentioned physics goals, a hermetical detector system will be constructed with cutting-edge technologies. This document is the result of collective contributions and valuable inputs from experts across the globe. The EicC physics program complements the ongoing scientific programs at the Jefferson Laboratory and the future EIC project in the United States. The success of this project will also advance both nuclear and particle physics as well as accelerator and detector technology in China.

Deciphering the nature of X(3872) in heavy ion collisions

Exploring the nature of exotic multiquark candidates such as the $X(3872)$ plays a pivotal role in understanding quantum chromodynamics (QCD). Despite significant efforts, consensus on their internal structures is still lacking. As a prime example, it remains a pressing open question to decipher the $X(3872)$ state between two popular exotic configurations: a loose hadronic molecule or a compact tetraquark. We demonstrate a novel approach to help address this problem by studying the $X(3872)$ production in heavy ion collisions, where a hot fireball with ample light as well as charm (anti-)quarks is available for producing the exotics. Adopting a multiphase transport model (AMPT) for describing such collisions and implementing appropriate production mechanism of either molecule or tetraquark picture, we compute and compare a series of observables for $X(3872)$ in Pb-Pb collisions at the Large Hadron Collider. We find the fireball volume plays a crucial role, leading to a 2-order-of-magnitude difference in the $X(3872)$ yield and a markedly different centrality dependence between hadronic molecules and compact tetraquarks, thus offering a unique opportunity for distinguishing the two scenarios. We also make the first prediction of $X(3872)$ elliptic flow coefficient to be tested by future experimental measurements.

The Tight Bound for Pure Price of Anarchy in an Extended Miner's Dilemma Game

Pool block withholding attack is performed among mining pools in digital cryptocurrencies, such as Bitcoin. Instead of mining honestly, pools can be incentivized to infiltrate their own miners into other pools. These infiltrators report partial solutions but withhold full solutions, share block rewards but make no contribution to block mining. The block withholding attack among mining pools can be modeled as a non-cooperative game called "the miner's dilemm", which reduces effective mining power in the system and leads to potential systemic instability in the blockchain. However, existing literature on the game-theoretic properties of this attack only gives a preliminary analysis, e.g., an upper bound of 3 for the pure price of anarchy (PPoA) in this game, with two pools involved and no miner betraying. Pure price of anarchy is a measurement of how much mining power is wasted in the miner's dilemma game. Further tightening its upper bound will bring us more insight into the structure of this game, so as to design mechanisms to reduce the systemic loss caused by mutual attacks. In this paper, we give a tight bound of (1, 2] for the pure price of anarchy. Moreover, we show the tight bound holds in a more general setting, in which infiltrators may betray. We also prove the existence and uniqueness of pure Nash equilibrium in this setting. Inspired by experiments on the game among three mining pools, we conjecture that similar results hold in the N-player miner's dilemma game (N>=2).

Optimizing Information Freshness for Cooperative IoT Systems with Stochastic Arrivals

This paper considers a cooperative Internet of Things (IoT) system with a source aiming to transmit randomly generated status updates to a designated destination as timely as possible under the help of a relay. We adopt a recently proposed concept, the age of information (AoI), to characterize the timeliness of the status updates. In the considered system, delivering the status updates via the one-hop direct link will have a shorter transmission time at the cost of incurring a higher error probability, while the delivery of status updates through the two-hop relay link could be more reliable at the cost of suffering longer transmission time. Thus, it is important to design the relaying protocol of the considered system for optimizing the information freshness. Considering the limited capabilities of IoT devices, we propose two low-complexity age-oriented relaying (AoR) protocols, i.e., the source-prioritized AoR (SP-AoR) protocol and the relay-prioritized AoR (RP-AoR) protocol, to reduce the AoI of the considered system. By carefully analyzing the evolution of the instantaneous AoI, we derive closed-form expressions of the average AoI for both proposed AoR protocols. We further optimize the generation probability of the status updates at the source in both protocols. Simulation results validate our theoretical analysis, and demonstrate that the two proposed protocols outperform each other under various system parameters. Moreover, the protocol with better performance can achieve near-optimal performance compared with the optimal scheduling policy attained by applying the Markov decision process (MDP) tool.

Contraband Materials Detection Within Volumetric 3D Computed Tomography Baggage Security Screening Imagery

Automatic prohibited object detection within 2D/3D X-ray Computed Tomography (CT) has been studied in literature to enhance the aviation security screening at checkpoints. Deep Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) have demonstrated superior performance in 2D X-ray imagery. However, there exists very limited proof of how deep neural networks perform in materials detection within volumetric 3D CT baggage screening imagery. We attempt to close this gap by applying Deep Neural Networks in 3D contraband substance detection based on their material signatures. Specifically, we formulate it as a 3D semantic segmentation problem to identify material types for all voxels based on which contraband materials can be detected. To this end, we firstly investigate 3D CNN based semantic segmentation algorithms such as 3D U-Net and its variants. In contrast to the original dense representation form of volumetric 3D CT data, we propose to convert the CT volumes into sparse point clouds which allows the use of point cloud processing approaches such as PointNet++ towards more efficient processing. Experimental results on a publicly available dataset (NEU ATR) demonstrate the effectiveness of both 3D U-Net and PointNet++ in materials detection in 3D CT imagery for baggage security screening.

Chaotic diffusion of complex trajectory and its quantum signature

We investigate both the quantum and classical dynamics of a non-Hermitian system via a kicked rotor model with $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry. For the quantum dynamics, both the mean momentum and mean square of momentum exhibits the staircase growth with time when the system parameter is in the neighborhood of the $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry breaking point. If the system parameter is very larger than the $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry breaking point, the accelerator mode results in the directed spreading of the wavepackets as well as the ballistic diffusion in momentum space. For the classical dynamics, the non-Hermitian kicking potential leads to exponentially-fast increase of classical complex trajectories. As a consequence, the imaginary part of trajectories exponentially diffuses with time, while the real part exhibits the normal diffusion. Our analytical prediction of the exponential diffusion of imaginary momentum and its breakdown time is in good agreement with numerical results. The quantum signature of the chaotic diffusion of the complex trajectories is reflected by the dynamics of the out-of-time-order correlators (OTOC). In the semiclassical regime, the rate the exponential increase of the OTOC is equal with that of the exponential diffusion of complex trajectories.

Robot Learning via Human Adversarial Games

Much work in robotics has focused on "human-in-the-loop" learning techniques that improve the efficiency of the learning process. However, these algorithms have made the strong assumption of a cooperating human supervisor that assists the robot. In reality, human observers tend to also act in an adversarial manner towards deployed robotic systems. We show that this can in fact improve the robustness of the learned models by proposing a physical framework that leverages perturbations applied by a human adversary, guiding the robot towards more robust models. In a manipulation task, we show that grasping success improves significantly when the robot trains with a human adversary as compared to training in a self-supervised manner.
