Probing scalar meson structures in $χ_{c1}$ decays into pseudoscalar and scalar

We evaluate the decay branching ratios of $χ_{c1}\to PS$, in a quark model parametrization scheme, where $P$ and $S$ stand for pseudoscalar and scalar meson, respectively. An interesting feature of this decay process is that the $c\bar{c}$ annihilate via the pQCD hair-pin diagram is supposed to be dominant. Hence, this decay process should be sensitive to the quark components of the final-state light mesons, and would provide a great opportunity for testing the mixing relations among the scalar mesons, i.e. $f_0(1370)$, $f_0(1500)$ and $f_0(1710)$, by tagging the final state pseudoscalar mesons.

The nature of X(3900) and recognition of open charm effects

We identify open charm effects in a direct production process $e^+e^-\to J/ψπ^0$. A unique feature of this process is that the $D\bar{D}^*+c.c.$ threshold is located at a relatively isolated energy region, i.e. $\sim 3.876 \ \mathrm{GeV}$, which is far away from the well-established charmonia $ψ(3770)$ and $ψ(4040)$. Therefore, the cross section line-shape of this reaction provides an opportunity for singling out the open charm effects. A model-independent narrow enhancement between the thresholds of $D^0\bar{D}^{*0}+c.c.$ and $D^+D^{*-}+c.c.$ is predicted. This study can also help understand the X(3900) enhancement recently observed by the Belle and BaBar Collaboration in $e^+e^-\to D\bar{D}+c.c.$ We also show that the open charm effects play a crucial role for our understanding of the long-standing "$ρπ$ puzzle".

Updated study of the $η_c$ and $η_c^\prime$ decays into light vector mesons

We re-investigate the exclusive decays of $η_c$ and $η_c^\prime$ to a pair of light vector mesons, i.e. $η_c (η_c')\to VV$. The long-distance intermediate meson loop (IML) effects are evaluated as a non-perturbative mechanism in addition to the short-distance $c\bar{c}$ annihilation contributions. We show that both processes can be reasonably well constrained with the help of the available experimental data. Since $η_c$ and $η_c'$ are the spin-0 partners of $J/ψ$ and $ψ'$, respectively, our study is useful for gaining insights into the pQCD helicity selection rule violations in charmonium decays and the long-standing "$ρπ$ puzzle".

Open charm effects in the explanation of the long-standing "$ρπ$ puzzle"

A detailed analysis of the open charm effects on the decays of $J/ψ(ψ^\prime)\to VP$ is presented, where $V$ stands for light vector meson and $P$ for light pseudoscalar meson. These are the channels that the so-called "12% rule" of perturbative QCD (pQCD) is obviously violated. Nevertheless, they are also the channels that violate the pQCD helicity selection rule (HSR) at leading order. In this work, we put constraints on the electromagnetic (EM) contribution, short-distance contribution from the $c\bar{c}$ annihilation at the wavefunction origin, and long-distance contribution from the open charm threshold effects on these two decays. We show that interferences among these amplitudes, in particular, the destructive interferences between the short-distance and long-distance strong amplitudes play a key role to evade the HSR and cause the significant deviations from the pQCD expected "12% rule".

On Quotients of Formal Power Series

Quotient is a basic operation of formal languages, which plays a key role in the construction of minimal deterministic finite automata (DFA) and the universal automata. In this paper, we extend this operation to formal power series and systemically investigate its implications in the study of weighted automata. In particular, we define two quotient operations for formal power series that coincide when calculated by a word. We term the first operation as (left or right) \emph{quotient}, and the second as (left or right) \emph{residual}. To support the definitions of quotients and residuals, the underlying semiring is restricted to complete semirings or complete c-semirings. Algebraical properties that are similar to the classical case are obtained in the formal power series case. Moreover, we show closure properties, under quotients and residuals, of regular series and weighted context-free series are similar as in formal languages. Using these operations, we define for each formal power series $A$ two weighted automata ${\cal M}_A$ and ${\cal U}_A$. Both weighted automata accepts $A$, and ${\cal M}_A$ is the minimal deterministic weighted automaton of $A$. The universality of ${\cal U}_A$ is justified and, in particular, we show that ${\cal M}_A$ is a sub-automaton of ${\cal U}_A$. Last but not least, an effective method to construct the universal automaton is also presented in this paper.

Rough solutions of Einstein vacuum equations in CMCSH gauge

In this paper, we consider very rough solutions to Cauchy problem for the Einstein vacuum equations in CMC spacial harmonic gauge, and obtain the local well-posedness result in $H^s, s>2$. The novelty of our approach lies in that, without resorting to the standard paradifferential regularization over the rough, Einstein metric $\bg$, we manage to implement the commuting vector field approach to prove Strichartz estimate for geometric wave equation $\Box_\bg ϕ=0$ directly.

The Initial-Final Mass Relation among White Dwarfs in Wide Binaries

We present the initial-final mass relation derived from 10 white dwarfs in wide binaries that consist of a main sequence star and a white dwarf. The temperature and gravity of each white dwarf was measured by fitting theoretical model atmospheres to the observed spectrum using a $χ^{2}$ fitting algorithm. The cooling time and mass was obtained using theoretical cooling tracks. The total age of each binary was estimated from the chromospheric activity of its main sequence component to an uncertainty of about 0.17 dex in log \textit{t} The difference between the total age and white dwarf cooling time is taken as the main sequence lifetime of each white dwarf. The initial mass of each white dwarf was then determined using stellar evolution tracks with a corresponding metallicity derived from spectra of their main sequence companions, thus yielding the initial-final mass relation. Most of the initial masses of the white dwarf components are between 1 - 2 M$_{\odot}$. Our results suggest a correlation between the metallicity of a white dwarf's progenitor and the amount of post-main-sequence mass loss it experiences - at least among progenitors with masses in the range of 1 - 2 M$_{\odot}$. A comparison of our observations to theoretical models suggests that low mass stars preferentially lose mass on the red giant branch.

Cooperative Secret Key Generation from Phase Estimation in Narrowband Fading Channels

By exploiting multipath fading channels as a source of common randomness, physical layer (PHY) based key generation protocols allow two terminals with correlated observations to generate secret keys with information-theoretical security. The state of the art, however, still suffers from major limitations, e.g., low key generation rate, lower entropy of key bits and a high reliance on node mobility. In this paper, a novel cooperative key generation protocol is developed to facilitate high-rate key generation in narrowband fading channels, where two keying nodes extract the phase randomness of the fading channel with the aid of relay node(s). For the first time, we explicitly consider the effect of estimation methods on the extraction of secret key bits from the underlying fading channels and focus on a popular statistical method--maximum likelihood estimation (MLE). The performance of the cooperative key generation scheme is extensively evaluated theoretically. We successfully establish both a theoretical upper bound on the maximum secret key rate from mutual information of correlated random sources and a more practical upper bound from Cramer-Rao bound (CRB) in estimation theory. Numerical examples and simulation studies are also presented to demonstrate the performance of the cooperative key generation system. The results show that the key rate can be improved by a couple of orders of magnitude compared to the existing approaches.

Open charm effects in $e^+e^-\to J/ψη$, $J/ψπ^0$ and $ϕη_c$

We propose to study the open charm effects in $e^+ e^-\to J/ψη$, $J/ψπ^0$ and $ϕη_c$. We show that the exclusive cross section lineshapes of these processes would be strongly affected by the open charm effects. Since the final state light meson productions are through soft gluon radiations, we assume a recognition of this soft process via charmed meson loops at hadronic level. A unique feature among these three reactions is that the $D\bar{D^*}+c.c.$ open channel is located in a relatively isolated energy, i.e. $\sim 3.876$ GeV, which is sufficiently far away from the known charmonia $ψ(3770)$ and $ψ(4040)$. Therefore, the cross section lineshapes of these reactions may provide an opportunity for singling out the open charm effects with relatively well-defined charmonium contributions. In particular, we find that reaction $e^+ e^-\to J/ψπ^0$ is sensitive to the open charm $D\bar{D^*}+c.c.$ Due to the dominance of the isospin-0 component at the charmonium energy region, we predict an enhanced model-independent cusp effect between the thresholds of $D^0\bar{D}^0+c.c.$ and $D^+ D^{*-}+c.c.$ This study can also help us to understand the X(3900) enhancement recently observed by Belle Collaboration in $e^+ e^-\to D\bar{D}+c.c.$

The Effect of Macromolecular Crowding, Ionic Strength and Calcium Binding on Calmodulin Dynamics

The flexibility in the structure of calmodulin (CaM) allows its binding to over 300 target proteins in the cell. To investigate the structure-function relationship of CaM, we combined methods of computer simulation and experiments based on circular dichroism (CD) to investigate the structural characteristics of CaM that influence its target recognition in crowded cell-like conditions. We developed a unique multiscale solution of charges computed from quantum chemistry, together with protein reconstruction, coarse-grained molecular simulations, and statistical physics, to represent the charge distribution in the transition from apoCaM to holoCaM upon calcium binding. Computationally, we found that increased levels of macromolecular crowding, in addition to calcium binding and ionic strength typical of that found inside cells, can impact the conformation, helicity and the EF hand orientation of CaM. Because EF hand orientation impacts the affinity of calcium binding and the specificity of CaM's target selection, our results may provide unique insight into understanding the promiscuous behavior of calmodulin in target selection inside cells.

Study of $η_c$ and $η_c^\prime$ decays into vector meson pairs

The processes of $η_c (η_c')\to VV$ are supposed to be suppressed by the helicity selection rule (HSR) but found to be rather important decay modes in experiment for $η_c$. We try to distinguish the short-distance transitions via the singly disconnected Okubo-Zweig-Iizuka (SOZI) processes and the doubly disconnected (DOZI) processes in $η_c (η_c')\to VV$. It shows that the SOZI processes can be related to the $η_c(η_c')$ wavefunctions at the origin. Therefore, a relation of the decay branching ratio fraction between these two decay channels can be established. Such a relation is similar to that for $J/ψ$ and $ψ^\prime\to VP$, where the so-called "$ρπ$ puzzle" has been existed for a while. We also show that the intermediate charmed meson loop transitions provide an evading mechanism for the DOZI processes. This contribution would turn out to be more important in $η_c^\prime\to VV$. As a consequence, it may produce significant deviations from the SOZI-dominant scenario. Future experimental measurement of the $η_c^\prime\to VV$ by BESIII should be able to clarify the DOZI-evading mechanisms.

Characterizing Internet Worm Infection Structure

Internet worm infection continues to be one of top security threats and has been widely used by botnets to recruit new bots. In this work, we attempt to quantify the infection ability of individual hosts and reveal the key characteristics of the underlying topology formed by worm infection, i.e., the number of children and the generation of the worm infection family tree. Specifically, we first apply probabilistic modeling methods and a sequential growth model to analyze the infection tree of a wide class of worms. We analytically and empirically find that the number of children has asymptotically a geometric distribution with parameter 0.5. As a result, on average half of infected hosts never compromise any vulnerable host, over 98% of infected hosts have no more than five children, and a small portion of infected hosts have a large number of children. We also discover that the generation follows closely a Poisson distribution and the average path length of the worm infection family tree increases approximately logarithmically with the total number of infected hosts. Next, we empirically study the infection structure of localized-scanning worms and surprisingly find that most of the above observations also apply to localized-scanning worms. Finally, we apply our findings to develop bot detection methods and study potential countermeasures for a botnet (e.g., Conficker C) that uses scan-based peer discovery to form a P2P-based botnet. Specifically, we demonstrate that targeted detection that focuses on the nodes with the largest number of children is an efficient way to expose bots. For example, our simulation shows that when 3.125% nodes are examined, targeted detection can reveal 22.36% bots. However, we also point out that future botnets may limit the maximum number of children to weaken targeted detection, without greatly slowing down the speed of worm infection.

Darknet-Based Inference of Internet Worm Temporal Characteristics

Internet worm attacks pose a significant threat to network security and management. In this work, we coin the term Internet worm tomography as inferring the characteristics of Internet worms from the observations of Darknet or network telescopes that monitor a routable but unused IP address space. Under the framework of Internet worm tomography, we attempt to infer Internet worm temporal behaviors, i.e., the host infection time and the worm infection sequence, and thus pinpoint patient zero or initially infected hosts. Specifically, we introduce statistical estimation techniques and propose method of moments, maximum likelihood, and linear regression estimators. We show analytically and empirically that our proposed estimators can better infer worm temporal characteristics than a naive estimator that has been used in the previous work. We also demonstrate that our estimators can be applied to worms using different scanning strategies such as random scanning and localized scanning.

Improved breakdown criterion for Einstein vacuum equations in CMC gauge

Let $\M_*=\cup_{t\in [t_0, t_*)} Σ_t$ be a part of vacuum globally hyperbolic space-time $(\bM, \bg)$, foliated by constant mean curvature hypersurfaces $Σ_t$ with $t_0<t_*<0$. We show that the foliation can be extended beyond $t_*$ if the second fundamental form $k$ and the lapse function $n$ satisfy $$ \int_{t_0}^{t_*}(\|k\|_{L^\infty(Σ_t)}+\|\nab \log n\|_{L^\infty(Σ_t)}) dt <\infty. $$ This improves the existing breakdown criteria for Einstein vacuum equations.

Novel electronic and magnetic properties of BN sheet decorated with hydrogen and fluorine

First principles calculations based on density functional theory reveal some unusual properties of BN sheet functionalized with hydrogen and fluorine. These properties differ from those of similarly functionalized graphene even though both share the same honeycomb structure. (1) Unlike graphene which undergoes a metal to insulator transition when fully hydrogenated, the band gap of the BN sheet significantly narrows when fully saturated with hydrogen. Furthermore, the band gap of the BN sheet can be tuned from 4.7 eV to 0.6 eV and the system can be a direct or an indirect semiconductor or even a half-metal depending upon surface coverage. (2) Unlike graphene, BN sheet has hetero-atomic composition, when co-decorated with H and F, it can lead to anisotropic structures with rich electronic and magnetic properties. (3) Unlike graphene, BN sheets can be made ferromagnetic, antiferromagnetic, or magnetically degenerate depending upon how the surface is functionalized. (4) The stability of magnetic coupling of functionalized BN sheet can be further modulated by applying external strain. Our study highlights the potential of functionalized BN sheets for novel applications.

Impurity-induced configuration-transition in the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state of a d-wave superconductor

The effect of impurities on Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) states in a layered superconductor with d-wave pairing symmetry is investigated using the tight-binding model and the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations. At low temperature and a strong exchange field applied parallel to its conducting plane, a two-dimensional (2D) square lattice-like Larkin-Ovchinnikov state is more energetically favorable in a clean system. In the presence of impurities, the spatial profile of the order parameter remains as a 2D square lattice, and it is distorted only near the impurities when the impurity concentration is low. As impurity concentration is increased to a certain level, quasi-one-dimensional (1D) like FFLO state becomes more energetically favorable. Increasing temperature with fixed impurity concentration can also induce a 2D to 1D FFLO state transition. Within the present finite size calculation, we did not find the existence of the Fulde and Ferrell state before the system becoming normal as the impurity concentration is raised.

Electrically driven thermal light emission from individual single-walled carbon nanotubes

Light emission from nanostructures exhibits rich quantum effects and has broad applications. Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) are one-dimensional (1D) metals or semiconductors, in which large number of electronic states in a narrow range of energies, known as van Hove singularities, can lead to strong spectral transitions. Photoluminescence and electroluminescence involving interband transitions and excitons have been observed in semiconducting SWNTs, but are not expected in metallic tubes due to non-radiative relaxations. Here, we show that in the negative differential conductance regime, a suspended quasi-metallic SWNT (QM-SWNT) emits light due to joule-heating, displaying strong peaks in the visible and infrared corresponding to interband transitions. This is a result of thermal light emission in 1D, in stark contrast with featureless blackbody-like emission observed in large bundles of SWNTs or multi-walled nanotubes. This allows for probing of the electronic temperature and non-equilibrium hot optical phonons in joule-heated QM-SWNTs.
