Gate-tunable multiband transport in ZrTe5 thin devices

Interest in ZrTe5 has been reinvigorated in recent years owing to its potential for hosting versatile topological electronic states and intriguing experimental discoveries. However, the mechanism of many of its unusual transport behaviors remains controversial, for example, the characteristic peak in the temperature-dependent resistivity and the anomalous Hall effect. Here, through employing a clean dry-transfer fabrication method under inert environment, we successfully obtain high-quality ZrTe5 thin devices that exhibit clear dual-gate tunability and ambipolar field effects. Such devices allow us to systematically study the resistance peak as well as the Hall effect at various doping densities and temperatures, revealing the contribution from electron-hole asymmetry and multiple-carrier transport. By comparing with theoretical calculations, we suggest a simplified semiclassical two-band model to explain the experimental observations. Our work helps to resolve the long-standing puzzles on ZrTe5 and could potentially pave the way for realizing novel topological states in the two-dimensional limit.

Cloud-RAIN: Point Cloud Analysis with Reflectional Invariance

The networks for point cloud tasks are expected to be invariant when the point clouds are affinely transformed such as rotation and reflection. So far, relative to the rotational invariance that has been attracting major research attention in the past years, the reflection invariance is little addressed. Notwithstanding, reflection symmetry can find itself in very common and important scenarios, e.g., static reflection symmetry of structured streets, dynamic reflection symmetry from bidirectional motion of moving objects (such as pedestrians), and left- and right-hand traffic practices in different countries. To the best of our knowledge, unfortunately, no reflection-invariant network has been reported in point cloud analysis till now. To fill this gap, we propose a framework by using quadratic neurons and PCA canonical representation, referred to as Cloud-RAIN, to endow point \underline{Cloud} models with \underline{R}eflection\underline{A}l \underline{IN}variance. We prove a theorem to explain why Cloud-RAIN can enjoy reflection symmetry. Furthermore, extensive experiments also corroborate the reflection property of the proposed Cloud-RAIN and show that Cloud-RAIN is superior to data augmentation. Our code is available at https://github.com/YimingCuiCuiCui/Cloud-RAIN.

Plasmonic-enhanced bright single spin defects in silicon carbide membranes

Optically addressable spin defects in silicon carbide (SiC) have emerged as attractable platforms for various quantum technologies. However, the low photon count rate significantly limits their applications. We strongly enhanced the brightness by 7 times and spin-control strength by 14 times of single divacancy defects in 4H-SiC membranes using surface plasmon generated by gold film coplanar waveguides. The mechanism of the plasmonic-enhanced effect is further studied by tuning the distance between single defects and the surface of the gold film. A three-energy-level model is used to determine the corresponding transition rates consistent with the enhanced brightness of single defects. Lifetime measurements also verified the coupling between defects and surface plasmons. Our scheme is low-cost, without complicated microfabrication and delicate structures, which is applicable for other spin defects in different materials. This work would promote developing spin defect-based quantum applications in mature SiC materials.

New methods to achieve meson, muon and gamma light sources through asymmetric electron positron collisions

We propose methods to produce energetic meson beams such as charged and neutral Kaons, which are boosted to be collimated and with relatively long life time. The first type of methods is based on asymmetric electron positron collisions with a center of mass energy of, e.g., 1020 MeV, and Kaons can be produced at a rate of $10^{4-5}/s$. The electron and positron beams are either asymmetric in energy, e.g., 10 GeV electron beam with 26 MeV positron beam, or asymmetric in space, e.g., 10 GeV electron and positron beams collisions separated with a angle around 0.05 radius. Such proposals should be able to be achieved with a reasonable budget. The other type of method is relying on TeV positron on target experiment, where Kaon beams can be achieved at around $10^{7}$ per bunch crossing. Such Kaon beams are clean with small contamination, and can have great physics potential on, e.g., hyperon searches through Kaon nuclei collision, Kaon rare decay measurement, and Kaon proton or Kaon lepton collisions. The same technique with very asymmetric electron positron collisions can also be extended to other final states such as pions and tau leptons.

Verwey transition as evolution from electronic nematicity to trimerons via electron-phonon coupling

Understanding the driving mechanisms behind metal-insulator transitions (MITs) is a critical step towards controlling material's properties. Since the proposal of charge-order-induced MIT in magnetite Fe3O4 in 1939 by Verwey, the nature of the charge order and its role in the transition have remained elusive-a longstanding challenge in the studies of complex oxides. Recently, a trimeron order was discovered in the low-temperature monoclinic structure of Fe3O4; however, the expected transition entropy change in forming trimeron at the Verwey transition is greater than the observed value, which arises a reexamination of the ground state in the high-temperature phase. Here we use electron diffraction to unveil that a nematic charge order on particular Fe sites emerges in the high-temperature cubic structure of bulk Fe3O4, and that upon cooling, a competitive intertwining of charge and lattice orders leads to the emergence of the Verwey transition. Moreover, MeV ultrafast electron diffraction (UED) provides a dynamic measure of the strong coupling between photoexcited electrons and the X3 phonon modes. Our findings discover a new type of electronic nematicity in correlated materials and offer novel insights into the Verwey transition mechanism in Fe3O4 via the electron-phonon coupling.

Higher-order Organization in the Human Brain from Matrix-Based Rényi's Entropy

Pairwise metrics are often employed to estimate statistical dependencies between brain regions, however they do not capture higher-order information interactions. It is critical to explore higher-order interactions that go beyond paired brain areas in order to better understand information processing in the human brain. To address this problem, we applied multivariate mutual information, specifically, Total Correlation and Dual Total Correlation to reveal higher-order information in the brain. In this paper, we estimate these metrics using matrix-based Rényi's entropy, which offers a direct and easily interpretable approach that is not limited by direct assumptions about probability distribution functions of multivariate time series. We applied these metrics to resting-state fMRI data in order to examine higher-order interactions in the brain. Our results showed that the higher-order information interactions captured increase gradually as the interaction order increases. Furthermore, we observed a gradual increase in the correlation between the Total Correlation and Dual Total Correlation as the interaction order increased. In addition, the significance of Dual Total Correlation values compared to Total Correlation values also indicate that the human brain exhibits synergy dominance during the resting state.

GeoGauss: Strongly Consistent and Light-Coordinated OLTP for Geo-Replicated SQL Database

Multinational enterprises conduct global business that has a demand for geo-distributed transactional databases. Existing state-of-the-art databases adopt a sharded master-follower replication architecture. However, the single-master serving mode incurs massive cross-region writes from clients, and the sharded architecture requires multiple round-trip acknowledgments (e.g., 2PC) to ensure atomicity for cross-shard transactions. These limitations drive us to seek yet another design choice. In this paper, we propose a strongly consistent OLTP database GeoGauss with full replica multi-master architecture. To efficiently merge the updates from different master nodes, we propose a multi-master OCC that unifies data replication and concurrent transaction processing. By leveraging an epoch-based delta state merge rule and the optimistic asynchronous execution, GeoGauss ensures strong consistency with light-coordinated protocol and allows more concurrency with weak isolation, which are sufficient to meet our needs. Our geo-distributed experimental results show that GeoGauss achieves 7.06X higher throughput and 17.41X lower latency than the state-of-the-art geo-distributed database CockroachDB on the TPC-C benchmark.

Searching for Majorana Neutrinos at a Same-Sign Muon Collider

Majorana properties of neutrinos have long been a focus in the pursuit of possible new physics beyond the standard model, which has motivated lots of dedicated theoretical and experimental studies. A future same-sign muon collider is an ideal platform to search for Majorana neutrinos through the Lepton Number Violation process. Specifically, this t-channel kind of process is less kinematically suppressed and has a good advantage in probing Majorana neutrinos at high mass regions up to 10 TeV. In this paper, we perform a detailed fast Monte Carlo simulation study through examining three different final states: 1) pure-leptonic state with electrons or muons, 2) semi-leptonic state, and 3) pure-hadronic state in the resolved or merged categories. Furthermore, we perform a full simulation study on the pure-leptonic final state to validate our fast simulation results.

DecentRAN: Decentralized Radio Access Network for 5.5G and beyond

Radio Access Network faces challenges from privacy and flexible wide area and local area network access. RAN is limited from providing local service directly due to centralized design of cellular network and concerns of user privacy and data security. DecentRAN or Decentralized Radio Access Network offers an alternative perspective to cope with the emerging demands of 5G Non-public Network and the hybrid deployment of 5GS and Wi-Fi in the campus network. Starting from Public key as an Identity, independent mutual authentication between UE and RAN are made possible in a privacy-preserving manner. With the introduction of decentralized architecture and network functions using blockchain and smart contracts, DecentRAN has ability to provide users with locally managed, end-to-end encrypted 5G NPN and the potential connectivity to Local Area Network via campus routers. Furthermore, the performance regarding throughput and latency are discussed, offering the deployment guidance for DecentRAN.

From RDMA to RDCA: Toward High-Speed Last Mile of Data Center Networks Using Remote Direct Cache Access

In this paper, we conduct systematic measurement studies to show that the high memory bandwidth consumption of modern distributed applications can lead to a significant drop of network throughput and a large increase of tail latency in high-speed RDMA networks. We identify its root cause as the high contention of memory bandwidth between application processes and network processes. This contention leads to frequent packet drops at the NIC of receiving hosts, which triggers the congestion control mechanism of the network and eventually results in network performance degradation. To tackle this problem, we make a key observation that given the distributed storage service, the vast majority of data it receives from the network will be eventually written to high-speed storage media (e.g., SSD) by CPU. As such, we propose to bypass host memory when processing received data to completely circumvent this performance bottleneck. In particular, we design Lamda, a novel receiver cache processing system that consumes a small amount of CPU cache to process received data from the network at line rate. We implement a prototype of Lamda and evaluate its performance extensively in a Clos-based testbed. Results show that for distributed storage applications, Lamda improves network throughput by 4.7% with zero memory bandwidth consumption on storage nodes, and improves network throughput by up 17% and 45% for large block size and small size under the memory bandwidth pressure, respectively. Lamda can also be applied to latency-sensitive HPC applications, which reduces their communication latency by 35.1%.

A Comparative Study of Z$^{\prime}$ mediated Charged Lepton Flavor Violation at future lepton colliders

Charged lepton flavor violation (CLFV) represents a transition between charged leptons of different generations that violates lepton flavor conservation, which is a clear signature of possible new physics beyond the standard model. By exploiting a typical example model of extra Z$^{\prime}$ gauge boson, we perform a detailed comparative study on CLFV searches at several future lepton colliders, including a 240 GeV electron-positron collider and a TeV scale muon collider. Based on detailed signal and background Monte-Carlo studies with fast detector simulations, we derive the potentials in searching for Z$^{\prime}$ mediated CLFV couplings with $eμ$, $eτ$ and $μτ$ of different future colliders. The results are compared with the current limits set by either low-energy experiments or the high-energy LHC experiments. We find that the sensitivity of the $τ$ related CLFV coupling strength at future lepton colliders will be significantly improved comparing with the current best constraints.

Laser Direct Writing of Visible Spin Defects in Hexagonal Boron Nitride for Applications in Spin-Based Technologies

Optically addressable spins in two-dimensional hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) attract widespread attention for their potential advantage in on-chip quantum devices, such as quantum sensors and quantum network. A variety of spin defects have been found in hBN, but no convenient and deterministic generation methods have been reported for other defects except negatively charged boron vacancy ($V_B^-$). Here we report that by using femtosecond laser direct writing technology, we can deterministically create spin defect ensembles with spectra range from 550 nm to 800 nm on nanoscale hBN flakes. Positive single-peak optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR) signals are detected in the presence of magnetic field perpendicular to the substrate, and the contrast can reach 0.8%. With the appropriate thickness of hBN flakes, substrate and femtosecond laser pulse energy, we can deterministically and efficiently generate bright spin defect array. Our results provide a convenient deterministic method to create spin defects in hBN, which will motivate more endeavors for future researches and applications of spin-based technologies such as quantum magnetometer array.

Low Energy Neutrino and Mass Dark Matter Detection Using Freely Falling Atoms

We propose a new method to detect low-energy neutrinos and low-mass dark matter at or below the MeV scale, through their coherent scatterings from freely falling heavy atoms and the resulting kinematic shifts. We start with a simple calculation for illustration: for $10^7$ heavy atoms of a mass number around 100 with a small recoil energy of 1 meV, the corresponding velocities can reach $0.01, {\rm m/s}$ and produce significant kinematic shifts that can be detected. We then show that the proposed device should be able to probe vast low-energy regions of neutrinos from meV to MeV and can surpass previous limits on sub-MeV dark matter by several orders of magnitude. Such a proposal can be useful to (1) detect sub-MeV-scale dark matter: with $10^2$ atom guns shooting downwards, for example, CsI or lead clusters consisting of $10^{7}$ atoms with a frequency around $10^3$ Hz, it can already be sensitive to scattering cross-sections at the level of $10^{-33 (-34)}\rm{cm}^{2}$ for 1 (0.1) MeV dark matter and surpass current limits. Technological challenges include high-quality atom cluster production and injections. (2) Measure coherent neutrino-nuclei scatterings at the 0.1-1 MeV region for the first time: with $10^4$ atom guns shooting downwards CsI clusters consisting of $10^{11}$ atoms and a frequency of $10^{6}$ Hz. One can expect 10 events from MeV solar neutrinos to be observed per year. Furthermore, (3) this method can be extended to probe very low-energy neutrinos down to the eV-KeV region and may be able to detect the cosmic neutrino background, although it remains challenging.

Magnetic detection under high pressures using designed silicon vacancy centers in silicon carbide

Pressure-induced magnetic phase transition is attracting interest due to its ability to detect superconducting behaviour at high pressures in diamond anvil cells. However, detection of the local sample magnetic properties is a great challenge due to the small sample chamber volume. Recently, optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR) of nitrogen vacancy (NV) centers in diamond have been used for in-situ pressure-induced phase transition detection. However, owing to their four orientation axes and temperature-dependent zero-field-splitting, interpreting the observed ODMR spectra of NV centers remain challenging. Here, we study the optical and spin properties of implanted silicon vacancy defects in 4H-SiC, which is single-axis and temperature-independent zero-field-splitting. Using this technique, we observe the magnetic phase transition of Nd2Fe14B at about 7 GPa and map the critical temperature-pressure phase diagram of the superconductor YBa2Cu3O6.6. These results highlight the potential of silicon vacancy-based quantum sensors for in-situ magnetic detection at high pressures.

POSGen: Personalized Opening Sentence Generation for Online Insurance Sales

The insurance industry is shifting their sales mode from offline to online, in expectation to reach massive potential customers in the digitization era. Due to the complexity and the nature of insurance products, a cost-effective online sales solution is to exploit chatbot AI to raise customers' attention and pass those with interests to human agents for further sales. For high response and conversion rates of customers, it is crucial for the chatbot to initiate a conversation with personalized opening sentences, which are generated with user-specific topic selection and ordering. Such personalized opening sentence generation is challenging because (i) there are limited historical samples for conversation topic recommendation in online insurance sales and (ii) existing text generation schemes often fail to support customized topic ordering based on user preferences. We design POSGen, a personalized opening sentence generation scheme dedicated for online insurance sales. It transfers user embeddings learned from auxiliary online user behaviours to enhance conversation topic recommendation, and exploits a context management unit to arrange the recommended topics in user-specific ordering for opening sentence generation. POSGen is deployed on a real-world online insurance platform. It achieves 2.33x total insurance premium improvement through a two-month global test.

Two types of superconducting pairs in stripe-ordered La$_{2-x}$Ba$_{x}$CuO$_4$ ($x=1/8$): evidence from the resistivity measurements

Recent angle-resolved $c$-axis resistivity measurements of the stripe-ordered La$_{2-x}$Ba$_x$CuO$_4$ (LBCO) with $x=1/8$ revealed an unexpected dependence on the direction of the in-plane magnetic field. We argue that these and other available data for the $c$-axis transport point to the existence of superconducting pairs of two different types in the $x=1/8$ LBCO below the stripe ordering temperature. The pairs of one type carry finite momentum and are confined to the Cu-O planes; the pairs of other type (probably the conventional $d$-wave with zero momentum) propagate along narrow conducting channels traversing the sample in the $c$-axis direction. The evidence for this comes from the observed exponential temperature dependence of the $c$-axis resistivity $ρ_c(T)$ which we attribute to the thermally excited slips of the superconducting phase and flux flows. We present a simple theory to fit the observed $π/2$-periodic dependence of $ρ_c$ on the direction of the in-plane magnetic field and the other data.

An optimized online filter stack spectrometer

The spectrum of laser-plasma-generated X-rays is very important as it can characterize electron dynamics and also be useful for applications, and nowadays with the forthcoming high-repetition-rate laser-plasma experiments, there is a raising demand for online diagnosis for the X-ray spectrum. In this paper, scintillators and silicon PIN diodes are used to build a wideband online filter stack spectrometer. The genetic algorithm is used to optimize the arrangements of the X-ray sensors and filters by minimizing the condition number of the response matrix, thus the unfolding error can be significantly decreased according to the numerical experiments. The detector responses are quantitatively calibrated by irradiating the scintillator and PIN diode using different nuclides and comparing the measured gamma-ray peaks. Finally, a 15-channel spectrometer prototype has been implemented. The X-ray detector, front-end electronics, and back-end electronics are integrated into the prototype, and the prototype can determine the spectrum with 1 kHz repetition rates.

Electromagnetic-Compliant Channel Modeling and Performance Evaluation for Holographic MIMO

Recently, the concept of holographic multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) is emerging as one of the promising technologies beyond massive MIMO. Many challenges need to be addressed to bring this novel idea into practice, including electromagnetic (EM)-compliant channel modeling and accurate performance evaluation. In this paper, an EM-compliant channel model is proposed for the holographic MIMO systems, which is able to model both the characteristics of the propagation channel and the non-ideal factors caused by mutual coupling at the transceivers, including the antenna pattern distortion and the decrease of antenna efficiency. Based on the proposed channel model, a more realistic performance evaluation is conducted to show the performance of the holographic MIMO system in both the single-user and the multi-user scenarios. Key challenges and future research directions are further provided based on the theoretical analyses and numerical results.
