Degenerate cavity supporting more than 31 Laguerre-Gaussian modes

Photons propagating in Laguerre-Gaussian modes have characteristic orbital angular momentums, which are fundamental optical degrees of freedom. The orbital angular momentum of light has potential application in high capacity optical communication and even in quantum information processing. In this work, we experimentally construct a ring cavity with 4 lenses and 4 mirrors that is completely degenerate for Laguerre-Gaussian modes. By measuring the transmission peaks and patterns of different modes, the ring cavity is shown to supporting more than 31 Laguerre-Gaussian modes. The constructed degenerate cavity opens a new way for using the unlimited resource of available angular momentum states simultaneously.

Multi-mode active control of friction, dynamic ratchets and actuators

Active control of friction by ultrasonic vibration is a well-known effect with numerous technical applications ranging from press forming to micromechanical actuators. Reduction of friction is observed with vibration applied in any of the three possible directions (normal to the contact plane, in the direction of motion and in-plane transverse). In this work, we consider the multi-mode active control of sliding friction, where phase-shifted oscillations in two or more directions act at the same time. Our analysis is based on a macroscopic contact-mechanical model that was recently shown to be well-suited for describing dynamic frictional processes. For simplicity, we limit our analysis to a constant, load-independent normal and tangential stiffness and two superimposed phase-shifted harmonic oscillations, one of them being normal to the plane and the other in the direction of motion. As in previous works utilizing the present model, we assume a constant local coefficient of friction, with reduction of the observed force of friction arising entirely from the macroscopic dynamics of the system. Our numerical simulations show that the resulting law of friction is determined by just three dimensionless parameters. Depending on the values of these parameters, three qualitatively different types of behavior are observed: (a) symmetric velocity-dependence of the coefficient of friction (same for positive and negative velocities), (b) asymmetric dependence with respect to the sign of the velocity, but with zero force at zero velocity, and (c) asymmetric dependence with non-zero force at zero velocity. The latter two cases can be interpreted as a "dynamic ratchet" (b) and an actuator (c).

Indium substitution effect on the topological crystalline insulator family (Pb$_{1-x}$Sn$_{x}$)$_{1-y}$In$_{y}$Te: Topological and superconducting properties

Topological crystalline insulators (TCIs) have been of great interest in the area of condensed matter physics. We investigated the effect of indium substitution on the crystal structure and transport properties in the TCI system (Pb$_{1-x}$Sn$_{x}$)$_{1-y}$In$_{y}$Te. For samples with a tin concentration $x\le50\%$, the low-temperature resisitivities show a dramatic variation as a function of indium concentration: with up to ~2% indium doping the samples show weak-metallic behavior, similar to their parent compounds; with ~6% indium doping, samples have true bulk-insulating resistivity and present evidence for nontrivial topological surface states; with higher indium doping levels, superconductivity was observed, with a transition temperature, Tc, positively correlated to the indium concentration and reaching as high as 4.7 K. We address this issue from the view of bulk electronic structure modified by the indium-induced impurity level that pins the Fermi level. The current work summarizes the indium substitution effect on (Pb,Sn)Te, and discusses the topological and superconducting aspects, which can be provide guidance for future studies on this and related systems.

Cumulative Activation in Social Networks

Most studies on influence maximization focus on one-shot propagation, i.e. the influence is propagated from seed users only once following a probabilistic diffusion model and users' activation are determined via single cascade. In reality it is often the case that a user needs to be cumulatively impacted by receiving enough pieces of information propagated to her before she makes the final purchase decision. In this paper we model such cumulative activation as the following process: first multiple pieces of information are propagated independently in the social network following the classical independent cascade model, then the user will be activated (and adopt the product) if the cumulative pieces of information she received reaches her cumulative activation threshold. Two optimization problems are investigated under this framework: seed minimization with cumulative activation (SM-CA), which asks how to select a seed set with minimum size such that the number of cumulatively active nodes reaches a given requirement $η$; influence maximization with cumulative activation (IM-CA), which asks how to choose a seed set with fixed budget to maximize the number of cumulatively active nodes. For SM-CA problem, we design a greedy algorithm that yields a bicriteria $O(\ln n)$-approximation when $η=n$, where $n$ is the number of nodes in the network. For both SM-CA problem with $η<n$ and IM-CA problem, we prove strong inapproximability results. Despite the hardness results, we propose two efficient heuristic algorithms for SM-CA and IM-CA respectively based on the reverse reachable set approach. Experimental results on different real-world social networks show that our algorithms significantly outperform baseline algorithms.

VBS ${\rm W}^\pm {\rm W}^\pm {\rm H}$ production at the HL-LHC and a 100 TeV pp-collider

${\rm W}^\pm {\rm W}^\pm {\rm H}$ production at hadron colliders through vector boson scattering is a so far unconsidered process, which leads to a clean signature of two same-sign charged leptons and two widely separated jets. This process is sensitive to the ${\rm HHH}$ and ${\rm WWHH}$ couplings and any deviation of these couplings from their SM predictions serves as direct evidence of new physics beyond the SM. In this paper we perform a Monte Carlo study of this process for the $\sqrt{s}=14$ TeV LHC and a $100$ TeV pp-collider, and provide projections of the constraints on the triple-Higgs and ${\rm WWHH}$ quartic couplings for these environments. In particular, we consider the impact of pileup on the expected sensitivity in this channel. Our analysis demonstrates that although the sensitivity to the ${\rm HHH}$ coupling is rather low, the ${\rm WWHH}$ coupling can be constrained in this channel within $\sim 100\%$ and $\sim 20\%$ at 95\% confidence level around the SM prediction at the HL-LHC and a 100 TeV pp-collider, respectively.

Lifshitz transition mediated electronic transport anomaly in bulk ZrTe5

Zirconium pentatelluride ZrTe$_5$, a fascinating topological material platform, hosts exotic chiral fermions in its highly anisotropic three-dimensional Dirac band and holds great promise advancing the next-generation information technology. However, the origin underlying its anomalous resistivity peak has been under debate for decades. Here we provide transport evidence substantiating the anomaly to be a direct manifestation of a Lifshitz transition in the Dirac band with an ultrahigh carrier mobility exceeding 3$\times$10$^5$ cm$^2$ V$^{-1}$ s$^{-1}$. We demonstrate that the Lifshitz transition is readily controllable by means of carrier doping, which sets the anomaly peak temperature $T_p$. $T_p$ is found to scale approximately as $n_H^{0.27}$, where the Hall carrier concentration $n_H$ is linked with the Fermi level by $ε_F$ $\propto$ $n_H^{1/3}$ in a linearly dispersed Dirac band. This relation indicates $T_p$ monotonically increases with $ε_F$, which serves as an effective knob for fine tuning transport properties in pentatelluride-based Dirac semimetals.

Study of the excited $1^-$ charm and charm-strange mesons

We give a systematical study on the recently reported excited charm and charm-strange mesons with potential $1^-$ spin-parity, including the $D^*_{s1}(2700)^+$, $D^*_{s1}(2860)^+$, $D^*(2600)^0$, $D^*(2650)^0$, $D^*_1(2680)^0$ and $D^*_1(2760)^0$. The main strong decay properties are obtained by the framework of Bethe-Salpeter (BS) methods. Our results reveal that the two $1^-$ charm-strange mesons can be well described by the further $2^3\!S_1$-$1^3\!D_1$ mixing scheme with a mixing angle of $8.7^{+3.9}_{-3.2}$ degrees. The predicted decay ratio $\frac{\mathcal{B}(D^*K)}{\mathcal{B}(D~K)}$ for $D^*_{s1}(2860)$ is $0.62^{+0.22}_{-0.12}$.~$D^*(2600)^0$ can also be explained as the $2^3\!S_1$ predominant state with a mixing angle of $-(7.5^{+4.0}_{-3.3})$ degrees. Considering the mass range, $D^*(2650)^0$ and $D^*_1(2680)^0$ are more likely to be the $2^3\!S_1$ predominant states, although the total widths under both the $2^3\!S_1$ and $1^3\!D_1$ assignments have no great conflict with the current experimental data. The calculated width for LHCb $D^*_1(2760)^0$ seems about 100 \si{MeV} larger than experimental measurement if taking it as $1^3\!D_1$ or $1^3\!D_1$ dominant state $c\bar u$. The comparisons with other calculations and several important decay ratios are also present. For the identification of these $1^-$ charm mesons, further experimental information, such as $\frac{\mathcal{B}(Dπ)}{\mathcal{B}(D^*π)}$ are necessary.

Interference Minimization in 5G Heterogeneous Networks

In this paper, we focus on one of the representative 5G network scenarios, namely multi-tier heterogeneous cellular networks. User association is investigated in order to reduce the down-link co-channel interference. Firstly, in order to analyze the multi-tier heterogeneous cellular networks where the base stations in different tiers usually adopt different transmission powers, we propose a Transmission Power Normalization Model (TPNM), which is able to convert a multi-tier cellular network into a single-tier network, such that all base stations have the same normalized transmission power. Then using TPNM, the signal and interference received at any point in the complex multi-tier environment can be analyzed by considering the same point in the equivalent single-tier cellular network model, thus significantly simplifying the analysis. On this basis, we propose a new user association scheme in heterogeneous cellular networks, where the base station that leads to the smallest interference to other co-channel mobile stations is chosen from a set of candidate base stations that satisfy the quality-of-service (QoS) constraint for an intended mobile station. Numerical results show that the proposed user association scheme is able to significantly reduce the down-link interference compared with existing schemes while maintaining a reasonably good QoS.

Boundary element method for normal non-adhesive and adhesive contacts of power-law graded elastic materials

Recently proposed formulation of the Boundary Element Method for adhesive contacts has been generalized for contacts of functionally graded materials with and without adhesion. First, proceeding from the fundamental solution for single force acting on the surface of a half space with a power-law varying elastic modulus, the deformation produced by constant pressure acting on a rectangular element was calculated and the influence matrix was obtained for a rectangular grid. The inverse problem for the calculation of required stress in contact area from a known surface deformation was solved by use of conjugate-gradient technique. For the transformation between the stresses and displacements, the Fast Fourier Transformation is used which drastically reduces the computation time. For the adhesive contact of graded material, the detachment criterion based on the method of Pohrt and Popov was proposed. A number of numerical test for the problem having exact analytical solution have been carried out confirming the correctness of underlying ideas and numerical implementation.

Decays of $B$, $B_s$ and $B_c$ to $D$-wave heavy-light mesons

We study the weak decays of $\bar{B}_{(s)}$ and $B_c$ into $D$-wave heavy-light mesons, including $J^P=2^-$ ($D_{(s)2},D'_{(s)2},B_{(s)2}, B'_{(s)2}$) and $3^-$~($D^*_{(s)3}, B^*_{(s)3}$) states. The weak decay hadronic matrix elements are achieved based on the instantaneous Bethe-Salpeter method. The branching ratios for $\bar{B}$ decays are $\mathcal{B}[\bar{B}\to D_{2}e\barν_e] = 1.1^{-0.3}_{+0.3} \times 10^{-3}$, $\mathcal{B}[\bar{B}\to D'_2e\barν_e]=4.1^{-0.8}_{+0.9} \times 10^{-4}$, and $\mathcal{B}[\bar{B}\to D^*_3e\barν_e]=1.0^{-0.2}_{+0.2} \times 10^{-3}$, respectively. For semi-electronic decays of $\bar B_s$ to $D_{s2}$, $D'_{s2}$, and $D^*_{s3}$, the corresponding branching ratios are $1.7^{-0.5}_{+0.5}\times 10^{-3}$, $5.2^{-1.5}_{+1.6}\times 10^{-4}$, and $1.5^{-0.4}_{+0.4}\times 10^{-3}$, respectively. The branching ratios of semi-electronic decays of $B_c$ to $D$-wave $D$ mesons are in the order of $10^{-5}$. We also achieved the forward-backward asymmetry, angular spectra, and lepton momentum spectra. In particular the distribution of decay widths for $2^-$ states $D_2$ and $D'_2$ varying along with mixing angle are presented.

Millimeter Wave Communications with OAM-SM Scheme for Future Mobile Networks

The orbital angular momentum (OAM) technique provides a new degree of freedom for information transmissions in millimeter wave communications. Considering the spatial distribution characteristics of OAM beams, a new OAM spatial modulation (OAM-SM) millimeter wave communication system is first proposed for future mobile networks. Furthermore, the capacity, average bit error probability and energy efficiency of OAM-SM millimeter wave communication systems are analytically derived for performance analysis. Compared with the conventional multi-input multi-output (MIMO) millimeter wave communication systems, the maximum capacity and energy efficiency of OAM-SM millimeter wave communication systems are improved by 36% and 472.3%, respectively. Moreover, numerical results indicate that the proposed OAM-SM millimeter wave communication systems are more robust to path-loss attenuations than the conventional MIMO millimeter wave communication systems, which makes it suitable for long-range transmissions. Therefore, OAM-SM millimeter wave communication systems provide a great growth space for future mobile networks.

A Dual-Directional Path-loss Model in 5G Wireless Fractal Small Cell Networks

With the anticipated increase in the number of low power base stations (BSs) deployed in small cell networks, blockage effects becoming more sensitive on wireless transmissions over high spectrums, variable propagation fading scenarios make it hard to describe coverage of small cell networks. In this paper, we propose a dual-directional path loss model cooperating with Line-of-Sight (LoS) and Non-Line-of-Sight (NLoS) transmissions for the fifth generation (5G) fractal small cell networks. Based on the proposed path loss model, a LoS transmission probability is derived as a function of the coordinate azimuth of the BS and the distance between the mobile user (MU) and the BS. Moreover, the coverage probability and the average achievable rate are analyzed for 5G fractal small cell networks. Numerical results imply that the minimum intensity of blockages and the maximum intensity of BSs can not guarantee the maximum average achievable rate in 5G fractal small cell networks. Our results explore the relationship between the anisotropic path loss fading and the small cell coverage in 5G fractal small cell networks.

Quantum entanglement swapping between two multipartite entangled states

Quantum entanglement swapping is one of the most promising ways to realize the quantum connection among local quantum nodes. In this Letter, we present an experimental demonstration of the entanglement swapping between two independent multipartite entangled states, each of which involves a tripartite Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) entangled state of an optical field. The entanglement swapping is implemented deterministically by means of a joint measurement on two optical modes coming from the two multipartite entangled states respectively and the classical feedforward of the measurement results. After entanglement swapping the two independent multipartite entangled states are merged into a large entangled state in which all unmeasured quantum modes are entangled. The entanglement swapping between a tripartite GHZ state and an Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen entangled state is also demonstrated and the dependence of the resultant entanglement on transmission loss is investigated. The presented experiment provides a feasible technical reference for constructing more complicated quantum networks.

Efficient Delivery Policy to Minimize User Traffic Consumption in Guaranteed Advertising

In this work, we study the guaranteed delivery model which is widely used in online display advertising. In the guaranteed delivery scenario, ad exposures (which are also called impressions in some works) to users are guaranteed by contracts signed in advance between advertisers and publishers. A crucial problem for the advertising platform is how to fully utilize the valuable user traffic to generate as much as possible revenue. Different from previous works which usually minimize the penalty of unsatisfied contracts and some other cost (e.g. representativeness), we propose the novel consumption minimization model, in which the primary objective is to minimize the user traffic consumed to satisfy all contracts. Under this model, we develop a near optimal method to deliver ads for users. The main advantage of our method lies in that it consumes nearly as least as possible user traffic to satisfy all contracts, therefore more contracts can be accepted to produce more revenue. It also enables the publishers to estimate how much user traffic is redundant or short so that they can sell or buy this part of traffic in bulk in the exchange market. Furthermore, it is robust with regard to priori knowledge of user type distribution. Finally, the simulation shows that our method outperforms the traditional state-of-the-art methods.

Control over emissivity of zero-static-power thermal emitters based on phase changing material GST

Controlling the emissivity of a thermal emitter has attracted growing interest with a view towards a new generation of thermal emission devices. So far, all demonstrations have involved sustained external electric or thermal consumption to maintain a desired emissivity. Here control over the emissivity of a thermal emitter consisting of a phase changing material Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST) film on top of a metal film is demonstrated. This thermal emitter shows broad wavelength-selective spectral emissivity in the mid-infrared. The peak emissivity approaches the ideal blackbody maximum and a maximum extinction ratio of above 10dB is attainable by switching GST between the crystalline and amorphous phases. By controlling the intermediate phases, the emissivity can be continuously tuned. This switchable, tunable, wavelength-selective and thermally stable thermal emitter will pave the way towards the ultimate control of thermal emissivity in the field of fundamental science as well as for energy-harvesting and thermal control applications, including thermophotovoltaics, light sources, infrared imaging and radiative coolers.

Strong decays of $2^+$ charm and charm-strange mesons

In this paper, we calculate the strong decays of $2^+$ heavy-light states, namely, the charmed $D^*_2(2460)^0$ meson and the charm-strange $D^*_{s2}(2573)^+$ meson. The method we adopt is the reduction formula, PCAC relation and low energy theorem, following which, the transition amplitudes are calculated. The wave functions of the heavy mesons involved are achieved by solving the instantaneous Bethe-Salpeter equation. As the OZI-allowed two-body strong decays give the dominant contribution, they can be used to estimate to total widths of mesons. Our results are: $Γ[D^*_2(2460)^0]=51.3$ MeV and $Γ[D^*_{s2}(2573)^+]=19.6$ MeV. The ratios of branching ratios of two main channels are $Br[D^*_2(2460)^0\rightarrow D^+π^-]/Br[D^*_2(2460)^0\rightarrow D^{\ast+}π^-]=2.13$ and $Br[D^*_{s2}(2573)^+\rightarrow D^{\ast 0} K^+]/Br[D^*_{s2}(2573)^+\rightarrow D^0K^+]=0.08$, respectively.

5G Multimedia Massive MIMO Communications Systems

In the Fifth generation (5G) wireless communication systems, a majority of the traffic demands is contributed by various multimedia applications. To support the future 5G multimedia communication systems, the massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technique is recognized as a key enabler due to its high spectral efficiency. The massive antennas and radio frequency (RF) chains not only improve the implementation cost of 5G wireless communication systems but also result in an intense mutual coupling effect among antennas because of the limited space for deploying antennas. To reduce the cost, an optimal equivalent precoding matrix with the minimum number of RF chains is proposed for 5G multimedia massive MIMO communication systems considering the mutual coupling effect. Moreover, an upper bound of the effective capacity is derived for 5G multimedia massive MIMO communication systems. Two antenna receive diversity gain models are built and analyzed. The impacts of the antenna spacing, the number of antennas, the quality of service (QoS) statistical exponent, and the number of independent incident directions on the effective capacity of 5G multimedia massive MIMO communication systems are analyzed. Comparing with the conventional zero-forcing precoding matrix, simulation results demonstrate that the proposed optimal equivalent precoding matrix can achieve a higher achievable rate for 5G multimedia massive MIMO communication systems.

Annihilation Rates of $^3D_2(2^{--})$ and $^3D_3(3^{--})$ Heavy Quarkonia

We calculate the annihilation decay rates of the $^3D_2(2^{--})$ and $^3D_3(3^{--})$ charmonia and bottomonia by using the instantaneous Bethe-Salpeter method. The wave functions of states with quantum numbers $J^{PC}=2^{--}$ and $3^{--}$ are constructed. By solving the corresponding instantaneous Bethe-Salpeter equations, we obtain the mass spectra and wave functions of the quarkonia. The annihilation amplitude is written within Mandelstam formalism and the relativistic corrections are taken into account properly. This is important, especially for high excited states, since their relativistic corrections are large. The results for the $3g$ channel are as follows: $Γ_{^3D_2(c\bar c)\rightarrow ggg} = 9.24$ keV, $Γ_{^3D_3(c\bar c)\rightarrow ggg}=25.0$ keV, $Γ_{^3D_2(b\bar b)\rightarrow ggg}= 1.87$ keV, and $Γ_{^3D_3(b\bar b)\rightarrow ggg}= 0.815$ keV.
