Cycle types of complete mappings of finite fields

We derive several existence results concerning cycle types and, more generally, the "mapping behavior" of complete mappings. Our focus is on so-called first-order cyclotomic mappings, which are functions on a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ that fix $0$ and restrict to the multiplication $x\mapsto a_ix$ by a fixed element $a_i\in\mathbb{F}_q$ on each coset $C_i$ of a given subgroup $C$ of $\mathbb{F}_q^{\ast}$. The gist of two of our main results is that as long as $q$ is large enough relative to the index $|\mathbb{F}_q^{\ast}:C|$, all cycle types of first-order cyclotomic permutations with only long cycles on $\mathbb{F}_q^{\ast}$ can be achieved through a complete mapping, as can all permutations of the cosets of $C$. Our third main result provides new examples of complete mappings $f$ such that both $f$ and its associated orthomorphism $f+\operatorname{id}$ permute the nonzero field elements in one cycle.

A comparative study of neural network techniques for automatic software vulnerability detection

Software vulnerabilities are usually caused by design flaws or implementation errors, which could be exploited to cause damage to the security of the system. At present, the most commonly used method for detecting software vulnerabilities is static analysis. Most of the related technologies work based on rules or code similarity (source code level) and rely on manually defined vulnerability features. However, these rules and vulnerability features are difficult to be defined and designed accurately, which makes static analysis face many challenges in practical applications. To alleviate this problem, some researchers have proposed to use neural networks that have the ability of automatic feature extraction to improve the intelligence of detection. However, there are many types of neural networks, and different data preprocessing methods will have a significant impact on model performance. It is a great challenge for engineers and researchers to choose a proper neural network and data preprocessing method for a given problem. To solve this problem, we have conducted extensive experiments to test the performance of the two most typical neural networks (i.e., Bi-LSTM and RVFL) with the two most classical data preprocessing methods (i.e., the vector representation and the program symbolization methods) on software vulnerability detection problems and obtained a series of interesting research conclusions, which can provide valuable guidelines for researchers and engineers. Specifically, we found that 1) the training speed of RVFL is always faster than BiLSTM, but the prediction accuracy of Bi-LSTM model is higher than RVFL; 2) using doc2vec for vector representation can make the model have faster training speed and generalization ability than using word2vec; and 3) multi-level symbolization is helpful to improve the precision of neural network models.

Permutation polynomials from a linearized decomposition

In this paper we discuss the permutational property of polynomials of the form $f(L(x))+k(L(x))\cdot M(x)\in \mathbb F_{q^n}[x]$ over the finite field $\mathbb F_{q^n}$, where $L, M\in \mathbb F_q[x]$ are $q$-linearized polynomials. The restriction $L, M\in \mathbb F_q[x]$ implies a nice correspondence between the pair $(L, M)$ and the pair $(g, h)$ of conventional $q$-associates over $\mathbb F_q$ of degree at most $n-1$. In particular, by using the AGW criterion, permutational properties of our class of polynomials translates to some arithmetic properties of polynomials over $\mathbb F_q$, like coprimality. This relates the problem of constructing PPs of $\mathbb F_{q^n}$ to the problem of factorizing $x^n-1$ in $\mathbb F_q[x]$. We then specialize to the case where $L(x)$ is the trace polynomial from $\mathbb F_{q^n}$ over $\mathbb F_q$, providing results on the construction of permutation and complete permutation polynomials, and their inverses. We further demonstrate that the latter can be extended to more general linearized polynomials of degree $q^{n-1}$.

Exciton emissions in bilayer WSe2 tuned by the ferroelectric polymer

In this work, a hybrid integration of few-layer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) and ferroelectric polymer is designed to achieve passive control of optical properties in-situ. The electrical polarization in ferroelectric P(VDF-TrFE) polymer can regulate the photoluminescence (PL) in few-layer TMDCs. The total PL intensity is substantially suppressed or enhanced under opposite polarization in bilayer WSe2. This is because electrons transfer between valley K and Λ in the conduction band induced by the built-in electric field in P(VDF-TrFE) polymer. This charge transfer further changes the competing dynamics between direct and indirect exciton recombination path and overall optical radiation efficiency. We also illustrate that the engineered PL originates from external electric field dependent transferred electron effect. The theoretical result matches the experimental data well. This work demonstrates a device platform in which passive regulation is achieved using 2D TMDCs modulated by polarized ferroelectric materials.

Multiple Object Tracking with Correlation Learning

Recent works have shown that convolutional networks have substantially improved the performance of multiple object tracking by simultaneously learning detection and appearance features. However, due to the local perception of the convolutional network structure itself, the long-range dependencies in both the spatial and temporal cannot be obtained efficiently. To incorporate the spatial layout, we propose to exploit the local correlation module to model the topological relationship between targets and their surrounding environment, which can enhance the discriminative power of our model in crowded scenes. Specifically, we establish dense correspondences of each spatial location and its context, and explicitly constrain the correlation volumes through self-supervised learning. To exploit the temporal context, existing approaches generally utilize two or more adjacent frames to construct an enhanced feature representation, but the dynamic motion scene is inherently difficult to depict via CNNs. Instead, our paper proposes a learnable correlation operator to establish frame-to-frame matches over convolutional feature maps in the different layers to align and propagate temporal context. With extensive experimental results on the MOT datasets, our approach demonstrates the effectiveness of correlation learning with the superior performance and obtains state-of-the-art MOTA of 76.5% and IDF1 of 73.6% on MOT17.

Universal co-existence of photovoltaics and ferroelectricity from two-dimensional 3R bilayer BX (X=P, As, Sb)

The intertwined ferroelectricity and photovoltaics in two-dimensional (2D) materials will enable the favorable improvement and control of photovoltaic preformances. In this paper, we take 2D 3R bilayer BX (X=P, As, Sb) as model systems to study the photovoltaic characteristics of intrinsic 2D out-of-plane (OOP) ferroelectric material, and try to explore a strategy to regulate the photoelectric properties by changing the strength of ferroelectric polarization. Due to the spatial inversion symmetry broken caused by special 3R stacking, spontaneous OOP ferroelectric polarization will appear in the 3R bilayer BX, which can be swichable through a specific interlayer sliding. The OOP ferroelectricity leads to charge transfer between layers, realizes efficient spatial separation between holes and electrons, and forms the characteristics of type-II band alignment. Moreover, due to perfect lattice match on account of two identical layers, the 3R bilayer BX is more stable and easy to realize in experiments than most of traditional 2D heterostructures made up of different materials. The 3R bilayer BX shows moderate band gap, ultra-high carrier mobility and efficient optical absorption, and its nano-devices present large photocurrent, high photon responsivity and excellent external quantum efficiency. More importantly, all these photoelectric parameters depend on the intrinsic OOP ferroelectric strength. By changing the interlayer distance of bilayer BX, the ferroelectric polarization can be regulated effectively to achieve the optimal photoelectric performance. Finally, we emphasize the importance and universality of spatial inversion symmetry broken in layered materials beyond the 3R bilayer BX to realize the co-regulation of ferroelectric and photovoltaics.

Energy-aware Task Scheduling with Deadline Constraint in DVFS-enabled Heterogeneous Clusters

Energy conservation of large data centers for high-performance computing workloads, such as deep learning with big data, is of critical significance, where cutting down a few percent of electricity translates into million-dollar savings. This work studies energy conservation on emerging CPU-GPU hybrid clusters through dynamic voltage and frequency scaling (DVFS). We aim at minimizing the total energy consumption of processing a batch of offline tasks or a sequence of real-time tasks under deadline constraints. We derive a fast and accurate analytical model to compute the appropriate voltage/frequency setting for each task and assign multiple tasks to the cluster with heuristic scheduling algorithms. In particular, our model stresses the nonlinear relationship between task execution time and processor speed for GPU-accelerated applications, for more accurately capturing real-world GPU energy consumption. In performance evaluation driven by real-world power measurement traces, our scheduling algorithm shows comparable energy savings to the theoretical upper bound. With a GPU scaling interval where analytically at most 36% of energy can be saved, we record 33-35% of energy savings. Our results are applicable to energy management on modern heterogeneous clusters.

Finding compositional inverses of permutations from the AGW criterion

Permutation polynomials and their compositional inverses have wide applications in cryptography, coding theory, and combinatorial designs. Motivated by several previous results on finding compositional inverses of permutation polynomials of different forms, we propose a general method for finding these inverses of permutation polynomials constructed by the AGW criterion. As a result, we have reduced the problem of finding the compositional inverse of such a permutation polynomial over a finite field to that of finding the inverse of a bijection over a smaller set. We demonstrate our method by interpreting several recent known results, as well as by providing new explicit results on more classes of permutation polynomials in different types. In addition, we give new criteria for these permutation polynomials being involutions. Explicit constructions are also provided for all involutory criteria.

Effect of acetylene links on electronic and optical properties of semiconducting graphynes

The family of graphynes, novel two-dimensional semiconductors with various and fascinating chemical and physical properties, has attracted great interest from both science and industry. Currently, the focus of graphynes is on graphdiyne, or graphyne-2. In this work, we systematically study the effect of acetylene, i.e., carbon-carbon triple bond, links on the electronic and optical properties of a series of graphynes (graphyne-n, where n = 1-5, the number of acetylene bonds) using the ab initio calculations. We find an even-odd pattern, i.e., n = 1, 3, 5 and n = 2, 4 having different features, which has not be discovered in studying graphyne or graphdyine only. It is found that as the number of acetylene bonds increases, the electron effective mass increases continuously in the low energy range because of the flatter conduction band induced by the longer acetylene links. Meanwhile, longer acetylene links result in larger redshift of the imaginary part of the dielectric function, loss function, and extinction coefficient. In this work, we propose an effective method to tune and manipulate both the electronic and optical properties of graphynes for the applications in optoelectronic devices and photo-chemical catalysis.

A hybrid controller for safe and efficient collision avoidance control

We design and experimentally evaluate a hybrid safe-by-construction collision avoidance controller for autonomous vehicles. The controller combines into a single architecture the respective advantages of an adaptive controller and a discrete safe controller. The adaptive controller relies on model predictive control to achieve optimal efficiency in nominal conditions. The safe controller avoids collision by applying two different policies, for nominal and out-of-nominal conditions, respectively. We present design principles for both the adaptive and the safe controller and show how each one can contribute in the hybrid architecture to improve performance, road occupancy and passenger comfort while preserving safety. The experimental results confirm the feasibility of the approach and the practical relevance of hybrid controllers for safe and efficient driving.

IRS: A Large Naturalistic Indoor Robotics Stereo Dataset to Train Deep Models for Disparity and Surface Normal Estimation

Indoor robotics localization, navigation, and interaction heavily rely on scene understanding and reconstruction. Compared to the monocular vision which usually does not explicitly introduce any geometrical constraint, stereo vision-based schemes are more promising and robust to produce accurate geometrical information, such as surface normal and depth/disparity. Besides, deep learning models trained with large-scale datasets have shown their superior performance in many stereo vision tasks. However, existing stereo datasets rarely contain the high-quality surface normal and disparity ground truth, which hardly satisfies the demand of training a prospective deep model for indoor scenes. To this end, we introduce a large-scale synthetic but naturalistic indoor robotics stereo (IRS) dataset with over 100K stereo RGB images and high-quality surface normal and disparity maps. Leveraging the advanced rendering techniques of our customized rendering engine, the dataset is considerably close to the real-world captured images and covers several visual effects, such as brightness changes, light reflection/transmission, lens flare, vivid shadow, etc. We compare the data distribution of IRS with existing stereo datasets to illustrate the typical visual attributes of indoor scenes. Besides, we present DTN-Net, a two-stage deep model for surface normal estimation. Extensive experiments show the advantages and effectiveness of IRS in training deep models for disparity estimation, and DTN-Net provides state-of-the-art results for normal estimation compared to existing methods.

Vortex states in an acoustic Weyl crystal with a topological lattice defect

We design and implement a three dimensional acoustic Weyl metamaterial hosting robust modes bound to a one-dimensional topological lattice defect. The modes are related to topological features of the bulk bands, and carry nonzero orbital angular momentum locked to the direction of propagation. They span a range of axial wavenumbers defined by the projections of two bulk Weyl points to a one-dimensional subspace, in a manner analogous to the formation of Fermi arc surface states. We use acoustic experiments to probe their dispersion relation, orbital angular momentum locked waveguiding, and ability to emit acoustic vortices into free space. These results point to new possibilities for creating and exploiting topological modes in three-dimensional structures through the interplay between band topology in momentum space and topological lattice defects in real space.

Effects of losses on the sensitivity of an actively correlated Mach-Zehnder interferometer

We theoretically studied the quantum Cramér-Rao bound of an actively correlated Mach-Zehnder interferometer (ACMZI), where the quantum Fisher information obtained by the phase-averaging method can give the proper phase-sensing limit without any external phase reference. We numerically calculate the phase sensitivities with the method of homodyne detection and intensity detection in the presence of losses. Under lossless and very low loss conditions, the ACMZI is operated in a balanced case to beat the standard quantum limit (SQL). As the loss increases, the reduction in sensitivity increases. However within a certain range, we can adjust the gain parameters of the beam recombination process to reduce the reduction in sensitivity and realize the sensitivity can continue to beat the SQL in an unbalanced situation. Our scheme provides an optimization method of phase estimation in the presence of losses.

EDNet: Efficient Disparity Estimation with Cost Volume Combination and Attention-based Spatial Residual

Existing state-of-the-art disparity estimation works mostly leverage the 4D concatenation volume and construct a very deep 3D convolution neural network (CNN) for disparity regression, which is inefficient due to the high memory consumption and slow inference speed. In this paper, we propose a network named EDNet for efficient disparity estimation. Firstly, we construct a combined volume which incorporates contextual information from the squeezed concatenation volume and feature similarity measurement from the correlation volume. The combined volume can be next aggregated by 2D convolutions which are faster and require less memory than 3D convolutions. Secondly, we propose an attention-based spatial residual module to generate attention-aware residual features. The attention mechanism is applied to provide intuitive spatial evidence about inaccurate regions with the help of error maps at multiple scales and thus improve the residual learning efficiency. Extensive experiments on the Scene Flow and KITTI datasets show that EDNet outperforms the previous 3D CNN based works and achieves state-of-the-art performance with significantly faster speed and less memory consumption.

Multi-cell NOMA: Coherent Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces Model With Stochastic Geometry

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) become promising for enhancing non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) systems, i.e., enhancing the channel quality and altering the SIC orders. Invoked by stochastic geometry methods, we investigate the downlink coverage performance of RIS-aided multi-cell NOMA networks. We first derive the RIS-aided channel model, concluding the direct and reflecting links. The analytical results demonstrate that the RIS-aided channel model can be closely modeled as a Gamma distribution. Additionally, interference from other cells is analyzed. Lastly, we derive closed-form coverage probability expressions for the paired NOMA users. Numerical results indicate that 1) although the interference from other cells is enhanced via the RISs, the performance of the RIS-aided user still enhances since the channel quality is strengthened more obviously; and 2) the SIC order can be altered by employing the RISs since the RISs improve the channel quality of the aided user.

Generalized cyclotomic mappings: Switching between polynomial, cyclotomic, and wreath product form

This paper is concerned with so-called index $d$ generalized cyclotomic mappings of a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$, which are functions $\mathbb{F}_q\rightarrow\mathbb{F}_q$ that agree with a suitable monomial function $x\mapsto ax^r$ on each coset of the index $d$ subgroup of $\mathbb{F}_q^{\ast}$. We discuss two important rewriting procedures in the context of generalized cyclotomic mappings and present applications thereof that concern index $d$ generalized cyclotomic permutations of $\mathbb{F}_q$ and pertain to cycle structures, the classification of $(q-1)$-cycles and involutions, as well as inversion.

Accurate Visual-Inertial SLAM by Feature Re-identification

We propose a novel feature re-identification method for real-time visual-inertial SLAM. The front-end module of the state-of-the-art visual-inertial SLAM methods (e.g. visual feature extraction and matching schemes) relies on feature tracks across image frames, which are easily broken in challenging scenarios, resulting in insufficient visual measurement and accumulated error in pose estimation. In this paper, we propose an efficient drift-less SLAM method by re-identifying existing features from a spatial-temporal sensitive sub-global map. The re-identified features over a long time span serve as augmented visual measurements and are incorporated into the optimization module which can gradually decrease the accumulative error in the long run, and further build a drift-less global map in the system. Extensive experiments show that our feature re-identification method is both effective and efficient. Specifically, when combining the feature re-identification with the state-of-the-art SLAM method [11], our method achieves 67.3% and 87.5% absolute translation error reduction with only a small additional computational cost on two public SLAM benchmark DBs: EuRoC and TUM-VI respectively.

Force-guided High-precision Grasping Control of Fragile and Deformable Objects using sEMG-based Force Prediction

Regulating contact forces with high precision is crucial for grasping and manipulating fragile or deformable objects. We aim to utilize the dexterity of human hands to regulate the contact forces for robotic hands and exploit human sensory-motor synergies in a wearable and non-invasive way. We extracted force information from the electric activities of skeletal muscles during their voluntary contractions through surface electromyography (sEMG). We built a regression model based on a Neural Network to predict the gripping force from the preprocessed sEMG signals and achieved high accuracy (R2 = 0.982). Based on the force command predicted from human muscles, we developed a force-guided control framework, where force control was realized via an admittance controller that tracked the predicted gripping force reference to grasp delicate and deformable objects. We demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed method on a set of representative fragile and deformable objects from daily life, all of which were successfully grasped without any damage or deformation.
