Double-layer Kagome Metals Pt3Tl2 and Pt3In2

The connectivity and inherent frustration of the kagome lattice can produce interesting electronic structures and behaviors in compounds containing this structural motif. Here we report the properties of Pt3X2 (X = In and Tl) that adopt a double-layer kagome net structure related to that of the topologically nontrivial high temperature ferromagnet Fe3Sn2 and the density wave hosting compound V3Sb2. We examined the structural and physical properties of single crystal Pt3Tl2 and polycrystalline Pt3In2 using x-ray and neutron diffraction, magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, and electrical transport measurements, along with density functional theory calculations of the electronic structure. Our calculations show that Fermi levels lie in pseudogaps in the densities of states with several bands contributing to transport, and this is consistent with our Hall effect, magnetic susceptibility, and heat capacity measurements. While electronic dispersions characteristic of simple kagome nets with nearest-neighbor hopping are not clearly seen, likely due to the extended nature of the Pt 5d states, we do observe moderately large and non-saturating magnetoresistance values and quantum oscillations in the magnetoresistance and magnetization associated with the kagome nets of Pt.

Experimental Twin-Field Quantum Key Distribution Over 1000 km Fiber Distance

Quantum key distribution (QKD) aims to generate secure private keys shared by two remote parties. With its security being protected by principles of quantum mechanics, some technology challenges remain towards practical application of QKD. The major one is the distance limit, which is caused by the fact that a quantum signal cannot be amplified while the channel loss is exponential with the distance for photon transmission in optical fiber. Here using the 3-intensity sending-or-not-sending protocol with the actively-odd-parity-pairing method, we demonstrate a fiber-based twin-field QKD over 1002 km. In our experiment, we developed a dual-band phase estimation and ultra-low noise superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors to suppress the system noise to around 0.02 Hz. The secure key rate is $9.53\times10^{-12}$ per pulse through 1002 km fiber in the asymptotic regime, and $8.75\times10^{-12}$ per pulse at 952 km considering the finite size effect. Our work constitutes a critical step towards the future large-scale quantum network.

Direct confirmation of long-range magnetic order and evidence for multipoles in Ce$_{2}$O$_{3}$

The sesquioxide, Ce$_{2}$O$_{3}$, has been a material of intense interest in recent years due to reports of an anomalous giant magnetodielectric effect and emergent mixed crystal field-phonon (vibronic) excitations below a putative antiferromagnetic transition at T$_{N}$ = 6.2 K. The claim of long-range magnetic order in this material is based on heat capacity and temperature-dependent susceptibility measurements; however, multiple neutron diffraction studies have been unable to distinguish any magnetic Bragg peaks. In this article, we present the results of a comprehensive investigation of the low-temperature phase in symmetry-broken polycrystalline Ce$_{2}$O$_{3}$ using a combination of magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, neutron diffraction, triple-axis and time-of-flight (TOF) inelastic neutron scattering (INS), and muon spin rotation ($μ$SR). Our measurements and subsequent analysis confirm that the transition at T$_{N}$ can be associated with the ordering of moments on the Ce$^{3+}$ site. Both a spontaneous magnetic order observed with $μ$SR and a dispersive spin-wave spectrum observed with inelastic neutron scattering suggest a model wherein planar dipoles order antiferromagnetically. Notable inconsistencies between $μ$SR and neutron scattering data within the dipole picture provide strong evidence for the ordering of higher-order moments.

Magnetic phase diagram and multiple field-induced states in the intermetallic triangular-lattice antiferromagnet NdAuAl$_4$Ge$_2$ with Ising-like spins

Geometrical frustration and the enhancement of strong quantum fluctuations in two-dimensional triangular antiferromagnets can lead to various intriguing phenomena. Here, we studied the spin-1/2 triangular lattice antiferromagnet NdAuAl$_4$Ge$_2$. Thermodynamic and transport properties, such as magnetization and specific heat together with the resistivity measurements were performed. In zero field, two successive phase transitions were observed at $T_{\rm N1}=1.75\pm 0.02$ K and $T_{\rm N2}=0.49\pm 0.02$ K, respectively. Under magnetic field, $\rm XXZ$-type anisotropy was revealed, with the moments pointing along the easy $c$ axis. For $B\parallel c$, multiple field-induced states were observed, and the magnetic phase diagram was established based on the specific heat and magnetization data. The temperature-dependent resistivity measurements indicate that NdAuAl$_4$Ge$_2$ is a good metal. It is very likely that both the long-range RKKY interactions and the geometrical frustration play an important roles in this case.

Explicit bounds for fixed subgroups of endomorphisms of free products

For an automorphism $ϕ$ of a free group $F_n$ of rank $n$, Bestvina and Handel showed that the rank $rk Fix(ϕ)$ of the fixed subgroup is not greater than $n$ (the so-called Scott conjecture). Soon after Bestvina and Handel's announcement, their result was generalized by many authors in various directions. In this paper, we are interested in the fixed subgroups of endomorphisms of free products, focusing on explicit bounds for their ranks.

Polyhedral distortions and unusual magnetic order in spinel FeMn$_{2}$O$_{4}$

Spinel compounds AB$_{2}$X$_{4}$ consist of both tetrahedral (AX$_{4}$) and octahedral (BX$_{6}$) environments with the former forming a diamond lattice and the latter a geometrically frustrated pyrochlore lattice. Exploring the fascinating properties and their correlations with structural features is critical in understanding these materials. FeMn$_{2}$O$_{4}$ has been reported to exhibit one structural transition and two successive magnetic transitions. Here, we report the polyhedral distortions and their correlations to the structural and two magnetic transitions in FeMn$_{2}$O$_{4}$ by employing the high-resolution neutron powder diffraction. While a large trigonal distortion is found even in the high-temperature cubic phase, the first-order cubic-tetragonal structural transition associated with the elongation of both tetrahedra and octahedra along the $c$ axis occurs at $T_{S} \approx$ 750 K, driven by the Jahn-Teller effect of the orbital active B-site Mn$^{3+}$ cation. A strong magnetoelastic coupling is unveiled at $T_{N1}\approx 400$ K as manifested by the appearance of Nèel-type collinear ferrimagnetic order, an anomaly in both tetrahedral and octahedral distortions, as well as an anomalous decrease of the lattice constant $c$ and a weak anomaly of $a$. Upon cooling below $T_{N2}\approx65$ K, it evolves to a noncollinear ferrimagnetic order with a canting of half B-site $Mn^{3+}$/$Fe^{3+}$ spins in the pyrochlore lattice, which is a unique magnetic order among spinels. Such a noncollinear order induces modifications of the O-B-O bond angles in the octahedra without affecting much the bond lengths of the tetrahedra/octahedra. Our study indicates that FeMn$_{2}$O$_{4}$ is a wonderful platform to unveil interesting magnetic order and to investigate their correlations to polyhedral distortions and lattice.

Leveraging Modality-specific Representations for Audio-visual Speech Recognition via Reinforcement Learning

Audio-visual speech recognition (AVSR) has gained remarkable success for ameliorating the noise-robustness of speech recognition. Mainstream methods focus on fusing audio and visual inputs to obtain modality-invariant representations. However, such representations are prone to over-reliance on audio modality as it is much easier to recognize than video modality in clean conditions. As a result, the AVSR model underestimates the importance of visual stream in face of noise corruption. To this end, we leverage visual modality-specific representations to provide stable complementary information for the AVSR task. Specifically, we propose a reinforcement learning (RL) based framework called MSRL, where the agent dynamically harmonizes modality-invariant and modality-specific representations in the auto-regressive decoding process. We customize a reward function directly related to task-specific metrics (i.e., word error rate), which encourages the MSRL to effectively explore the optimal integration strategy. Experimental results on the LRS3 dataset show that the proposed method achieves state-of-the-art in both clean and various noisy conditions. Furthermore, we demonstrate the better generality of MSRL system than other baselines when test set contains unseen noises.

The Bending of C$_3$: Experimentally Probing the $l$-type Doubling and Resonance

C$_3$, a pure carbon chain molecule that has been identified in different astronomical environments, is considered a good probe of kinetic temperatures through observation of transitions involving its low-lying bending mode ($ν_2$) in its ground electronic state. The present laboratory work aims to investigate this bending mode with multiple quanta of excitation by combining recordings of high resolution optical and infrared spectra of C$_3$ produced in discharge experiments. The optical spectra of rovibronic (A $^1Π_u -$ X $^1Σ_g^+$) transitions have been recorded by laser induced fluorescence spectroscopy using a single longitude mode optical parametric oscillator as narrow bandwidth laser source at the University of Science and Technology of China. 36 bands originating from X(0$v_2$0), $v_2 = 0-5$, are assigned. The mid-infrared spectrum of the rovibrational $ν_3$ band has been recorded by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy using a globar source on the AILES beamline of the SOLEIL synchrotron facility. The spectrum reveals hot bands involving up to 5 quanta of excitation in $ν_2$. From combining analyses of all the presently recorded spectra and literature data, accurate rotational parameters and absolute energy levels of C$_3$, in particular for states involving the bending mode, are determined. A single PGOPHER file containing all available data involving the X and A states (literature and present study) is used to fit all the data. The spectroscopic information derived from this work enables new interstellar searches for C$_3$, not only in the infrared and optical regions investigated here but also notably in the $ν_2$ band region (around 63 cm$^{-1}$) where vibrational satellites can now be accurately predicted. This makes C$_3$ a universal diagnostic tool to study very different astronomical environments, from dark and dense to translucent clouds.

Coarse particulate matter air quality in East Asia: implications for fine particulate nitrate

Coarse particulate matter (PM) is a serious air pollution problem in East Asia. Analysis of air quality network observations in the North China Plain and the Seoul Metropolitan Area shows that it is mainly anthropogenic and has decreased by 21% over 2015-2019. This anthropogenic coarse PM is generally not included in air quality models but scavenges nitric acid to suppress the formation of fine particulate (PM2.5) nitrate, a major contributor to PM2.5 pollution. Including it in the GEOS-Chem model decreases simulated PM2.5 nitrate to improve agreement with observations. Decreasing anthropogenic coarse PM over 2015-2019 directly increases PM2.5 nitrate in summer, offsetting the effect of other emission controls, while in winter it increases the sensitivity of PM2.5 nitrate to ammonia and sulfur dioxide emissions. Our work implies the need for stronger ammonia and nitrogen oxides emission controls to improve PM2.5 air quality as coarse PM continues to decrease.

Visual Area of Interests based Multimodal Trajectory Prediction for Probabilistic Risk Assessment

Accurate and reliable prediction of driving intentions and future trajectories contributes to cooperation between human drivers and ADAS in complex traffic environments. This paper proposes a visual AOI (Area of Interest) based multimodal trajectory prediction model for probabilistic risk assessment at intersections. In this study, we find that the visual AOI implies the driving intention and is about 0.6-2.1 s ahead of the operation. Therefore, we designed a trajectory prediction model that integrates the driving intention (DI) and the multimodal trajectory (MT) predictions. The DI model was pre-trained independently to extract the driving intention using features including the visual AOI, historical vehicle states, and environmental context. The intention prediction experiments verify that the visual AOI-based DI model predicts steering intention 0.925 s ahead of the actual steering operation. The trained DI model is then integrated into the trajectory prediction model to filter multimodal trajectories. The trajectory prediction experiments show that the proposed model outperforms the state-of-the-art models. Risk assessment for traffics at intersections verifies that the proposed method achieves high accuracy and a low false alarm rate, and identifies the potential risk about 3 s before a conflict occurs.

Predicted Trajectory Guidance Control Framework of Teleoperated Ground Vehicles Compensating for Delays

Maneuverability and drivability of the teleoperated ground vehicle could be seriously degraded by large communication delays if the delays are not properly compensated. This paper proposes a predicted trajectory guidance control (PTGC) framework to compensate for such delays, thereby improving the performance of the teleoperation system. The novelty of this PTGC framework is that teleoperators intended trajectory is predicted at the vehicle side with their delayed historical control commands and the LiDAR 3D point cloud of the environment, and then the vehicle is guided by the predicted trajectory. By removing the teleoperator from the direct control loop, the presented method is less sensitive to delays, and delays are compensated as long as the prediction horizon exceeds the delays. Human-in-the-loop simulation experiments are designed to evaluate the teleoperation performance with the proposed method under five delay levels. Based on the repeated measurement analysis of variance, it is concluded that the PTGC method can significantly improve the performance of the teleoperated ground vehicles under large delays(>200ms), such as the task completion time (TCT), deviation to centerline (D2C) and steering effort (SE). In addition, the results also show that teleoperators can adapt to smaller delays, and the presented method is ineffective in such cases.

QuadFormer: Quadruple Transformer for Unsupervised Domain Adaptation in Power Line Segmentation of Aerial Images

Accurate segmentation of power lines in aerial images is essential to ensure the flight safety of aerial vehicles. Acquiring high-quality ground truth annotations for training a deep learning model is a laborious process. Therefore, developing algorithms that can leverage knowledge from labelled synthetic data to unlabelled real images is highly demanded. This process is studied in Unsupervised domain adaptation (UDA). Recent approaches to self-training have achieved remarkable performance in UDA for semantic segmentation, which trains a model with pseudo labels on the target domain. However, the pseudo labels are noisy due to a discrepancy in the two data distributions. We identify that context dependency is important for bridging this domain gap. Motivated by this, we propose QuadFormer, a novel framework designed for domain adaptive semantic segmentation. The hierarchical quadruple transformer combines cross-attention and self-attention mechanisms to adapt transferable context. Based on cross-attentive and self-attentive feature representations, we introduce a pseudo label correction scheme to online denoise the pseudo labels and reduce the domain gap. Additionally, we present two datasets - ARPLSyn and ARPLReal to further advance research in unsupervised domain adaptive powerline segmentation. Finally, experimental results indicate that our method achieves state-of-the-art performance for the domain adaptive power line segmentation on ARPLSyn$\rightarrow$TTTPLA and ARPLSyn$\rightarrow$ARPLReal.

Realigned Hardy's Paradox

Hardy's paradox provides an all-versus-nothing fashion to directly certify that quantum mechanics cannot be completely described by local realistic theory. However, when considering potential imperfections in experiments, like imperfect entanglement source and low detection efficiency, the original Hardy's paradox may induce a rather small Hardy violation and only be realized by expensive quantum systems. To overcome this problem, we propose a realigned Hardy's paradox. Compared with the original version of Hardy's paradox, the realigned Hardy's paradox can dramatically improve the Hardy violation. Then, we generalize the realigned Hardy's paradox to arbitrary even $n$ dichotomic measurements. For $n=2$ and $n=4$ cases, the realigned Hardy's paradox can achieve Hardy values $P(00|A_1B_1)$ approximate $0.4140$ and $0.7734$ respectively compared with $0.09$ of the original Hardy's paradox. Meanwhile, the structure of the realigned Hardy's paradox is simpler and more robust in the sense that there is only one Hardy condition rather than three conditions. One can anticipate that the realigned Hardy's paradox can tolerate more experimental imperfections and stimulate more fascinating quantum information applications.

Explore Contextual Information for 3D Scene Graph Generation

3D scene graph generation (SGG) has been of high interest in computer vision. Although the accuracy of 3D SGG on coarse classification and single relation label has been gradually improved, the performance of existing works is still far from being perfect for fine-grained and multi-label situations. In this paper, we propose a framework fully exploring contextual information for the 3D SGG task, which attempts to satisfy the requirements of fine-grained entity class, multiple relation labels, and high accuracy simultaneously. Our proposed approach is composed of a Graph Feature Extraction module and a Graph Contextual Reasoning module, achieving appropriate information-redundancy feature extraction, structured organization, and hierarchical inferring. Our approach achieves superior or competitive performance over previous methods on the 3DSSG dataset, especially on the relationship prediction sub-task.

Relay Hindsight Experience Replay: Self-Guided Continual Reinforcement Learning for Sequential Object Manipulation Tasks with Sparse Rewards

Exploration with sparse rewards remains a challenging research problem in reinforcement learning (RL). Especially for sequential object manipulation tasks, the RL agent always receives negative rewards until completing all sub-tasks, which results in low exploration efficiency. To solve these tasks efficiently, we propose a novel self-guided continual RL framework, RelayHER (RHER). RHER first decomposes a sequential task into new sub-tasks with increasing complexity and ensures that the simplest sub-task can be learned quickly by utilizing Hindsight Experience Replay (HER). Secondly, we design a multi-goal & multi-task network to learn these sub-tasks simultaneously. Finally, we propose a Self-Guided Exploration Strategy (SGES). With SGES, the learned sub-task policy will guide the agent to the states that are helpful to learn more complex sub-task with HER. By this self-guided exploration and relay policy learning, RHER can solve these sequential tasks efficiently stage by stage. The experimental results show that RHER significantly outperforms vanilla-HER in sample-efficiency on five singleobject and five complex multi-object manipulation tasks (e.g., Push, Insert, ObstaclePush, Stack, TStack, etc.). The proposed RHER has also been applied to learn a contact-rich push task on a physical robot from scratch, and the success rate reached 10/10 with only 250 episodes.

Experimental preparation and manipulation of squeezed cat states via an all-optical in-line squeezer

The squeezed cat state, an essential quantum resource, can be used for quantum error correction and slowing decoherence of the optical cat state. However, preparing a squeezed cat state with high generation rate, and effectively manipulating it, remain challenging. In this work, a high-performance all-optical in-line squeezer is developed to prepare a squeezed cat state and manipulate the phase of the quadrature squeezing. This scheme has the advantages that the phase of the quadrature squeezing of the squeezed cat state can be manipulated by changing the working condition of the squeezer, and that a higher generation rate can be achieved via the deterministic squeezing operation of the in-line squeezer. The generation rate of squeezed cat states reaches 2 kHz, the same as that of the initial cat state. The all-optical in-line squeezer proposed here removes the requirements of electro-optic and opto-electric conversions necessary for an off-line squeezer, thus enabling high-bandwidth squeezing operations on non-Gaussian states. These results provide an efficient method to prepare and manipulate optical squeezed cat states, which makes a step closer to their applications in all-optical quantum information processing.

Structural magnetic glassiness in spin ice Dy$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$

The spin ice compound Dy$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ is well-known to realise a three-dimensional Coulomb spin liquid with magnetically charged monopole excitations. Its fate at low temperatures, however, remains an intriguing open question. Based on a low-temperature analysis of the magnetic noise and diffuse neutron scattering under different cooling protocols, combined with extensive numerical modelling, we argue that upon cooling, the spins freeze into what may be termed a `structural magnetic glass', without an a priori need for chemical or structural disorder. Specifically, our model indicates the presence of frustration on two levels, first producing a near-degenerate constrained manifold inside which phase ordering kinetics is in turn frustrated. Our results suggest that spin ice Dy$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ provides one prototype of magnetic glass formation specifically, and a setting for the study of kinetically constrained systems more generally.

Wider and Higher: Intensive Integration and Global Foreground Perception for Image Matting

This paper reviews recent deep-learning-based matting research and conceives our wider and higher motivation for image matting. Many approaches achieve alpha mattes with complex encoders to extract robust semantics, then resort to the U-net-like decoder to concatenate or fuse encoder features. However, image matting is essentially a pixel-wise regression, and the ideal situation is to perceive the maximum opacity correspondence from the input image. In this paper, we argue that the high-resolution feature representation, perception and communication are more crucial for matting accuracy. Therefore, we propose an Intensive Integration and Global Foreground Perception network (I2GFP) to integrate wider and higher feature streams. Wider means we combine intensive features in each decoder stage, while higher suggests we retain high-resolution intermediate features and perceive large-scale foreground appearance. Our motivation sacrifices model depth for a significant performance promotion. We perform extensive experiments to prove the proposed I2GFP model, and state-of-the-art results can be achieved on different public datasets.
