Competing orders and inter-layer tunnelling in cuprate superconductors: A finite temperature Landau theory

We propose a finite temperature Landau theory that describes competing orders and interlayer tunneling in cuprate superconductors as an important extension to a corresponding theory at zero temperature [Nature {\bf 428}, 53 (2004)], where the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ is defined in three possible ways as a function of the zero temperature order parameter. For given parameters, our theory determines $T_c$ without any ambiguity. In mono- and double-layer systems we discuss the relation between zero temperature order parameter and the associated transition temperature in the presence of competing orders, and draw a connection to the puzzling experimental fact that the pseudo-gap temperature is much higher than the corresponding energy scale near optimum doping. Applying the theory to multi-layer systems, we calculate the layer-number dependence of $T_c$. In a reasonable parameter space the result turns out to be in agreement with experiments.

Electronic Raman scattering in superconductors on triangle lattices

In superconductors on triangle lattices, we show that the electronic Raman spectra in the non-resonant channel are independent of the light polarization configuration in the scattering. Therefore the light polarization configuration is no longer a judicious choice to probe the anisotropic nature of the pairing wave function (as in the case of square lattices). However, we show that the detailed energy-shift dependence of the spectrum and the effects of impurities provide useful information that can help identify the possible pairing symmetry experimentally. These results are relevant to the newly discovered Na$_x$CoO$_2\cdot y$H$_2$O superconductors.

Doped t-J Model on a Triangular Lattice: Possible Application to Na$_x$CoO$_2\cdot y$H$_2$0 and Na$_{1-x}$TiO$_2$

We report the finding of time-reversal-symmetry-breaking $d_{x^2-y^2}+ id_{xy}$ superconducting ground state in the slave-boson mean-field theory for the t-J model on triangular lattice. For $t/J=-5$ ($t/J=-9$) pairing exists for $x < 13%$ ($x<8%$) upon electron doping, and $x <56%$ ($x<13%$) upon hole doping. These results are potentially relevant to doped Mott insulators Na$_x$CoO$_2$.yH$_2$O and Na$_{1-x}$TiO$_2$.

Quantum Ginzburg-Landau theory of doped Mott insulators

We improve a previous theory of doped Mott insulators with duality between pairing and magnetism by a further duality transform. As the result we obtained a quantum Ginzburg-Landau theory describing the Cooper pair condensate and the dual of spin condensate. We address the superconductivity by doping a Mott insulator, which we call Mott superconductivity. Some fingerprints of such novelty in cuprates are the scaling between neutron resonance energy and superfluid density, and the induced {\it quantized} spin moment by vortices or Zn impurity (together with circulating charge supper-current to be checked by experiments).

Theory of doped Mott insulators: duality between pairing and magnetism

By bosonizing the electronic t-J model exactly on any two-dimensional (2D) lattices, and integrating out the gauge fluctuations combined to slave particles beyond mean fields, we get a theory in terms of physical Cooper pair and spin condensates. In the sense of mutual Berry phase they turns out to be dual to each other. The mutual-duality is the missing key in the resonant-valance-bond idea\cite{rvb} to work as a paradigm of doped 2D Mott insulators. We argue that essential aspects of high-$T_c$ phenomenology find natural solutions in the theory. We also provide interesting predictions for systems on hexagonal lattices.

Impurity and interface bound states in $d_{x^2-y^2}+id_{xy}$ and $p_x+ip_y$ superconductors

Motivated by recent discoveries of novel superconductors such as Na$_x$CoO$_2\cdot y$H$_2$O and Sr$_2$RuO$_4$, we analysize features of quasi-particle scattering due to impurities and interfaces for possible gapful $d_{x^2-y^2}+id_{xy}$ and $p_x+ip_y$ Cooper pairing. A bound state appears near a local impurity, and a band of bound states form near an interface. We obtained analytically the bound state energy, and calculated the space and energy dependent local density of states resolvable by high-resolution scanning tunnelling microscopy. For comparison we also sketch results of impurity and surface states if the pairing is nodal p- or d-wave.

Quasiparticle Scattering Interference in High Temperature Superconductors

We propose that the energy-dependent spatial modulation of the local density of states seen by Hoffman, et al [hoff2] is due to the scattering interference of quasiparticles. In this paper we present the general theoretical basis for such an interpretation and lay out the underlying assumptions. As an example, we perform exact T-matrix calculation for the scattering due to a single impurity. The results of this calculation is used to check the assumptions, and demonstrate that quasiparticle scattering interference can indeed produce patterns similar to those observed in Ref. [hoff2].

Mechanism of pseudogap probed by a local impurity

The response to a local strong non-magnetic impurity in the pseudogap phase is examined in two distinctly different scenarios: phase-fluctuation (PF) of pairing field and d-density-wave (DDW) order. In the PF scenario, the resonance state is generally double-peaked near the Fermi level, and is abruptly broadened by vortex fluctuations slightly above the transition temperature. In the DDW scenario, the resonance is single-peaked and remains sharp up to gradual intrinsic thermal broadening, and the resonance energy is analytically determined to be at minus of the chemical potential.

Pairing in the spin sector

The nanometer-scale gap inhomogeneity revealed by recent STM images of BSCCO surface suggests that the ``gap coherence length'' is of that order. Thus a robust pairing gap can develop despite the poorly screened Coulomb interaction. This can be taken as an evidence that the pairing in high $T_c$ materials occurs primarily in the neutral (spin) sector. We provide theoretical support for this point of view.

Staggered currents in the mixed state

The current pattern in the mixed state of high-$T_{c}$ superconductors is studied in the U(1) mean field theory of the t-J model. Our findings are the following. 1) In the absence of antiferromagnetism a robust staggered current pattern exists in the core of vortices if the doping is not too high. 2) At a fixed doping and with increasing magnetic field, the size of the staggered current core expands, and eventually percolates. 3) The polarity of the staggered current is pinned by the direction of the magnetic field. 4) Vortex cores locally modify the hole density - in a staggered (non-staggered) core, the excess charge is slightly negative (positive). 5) Gutzwiller projection does not wash out the staggered current. Finally we present two experimental predictions concerning neutron scattering and STM spectra that capture the signature of the staggered current induced by the vortices.

Staggered Currents in the Vortex Core

We study the electronic structure of the vortex core in the cuprates using the U(1) slave-boson mean-field wavefunctions and their Gutzwiller projection. We conclude that there exists local orbital antiferromagnetic order in the core near optimal doping. We compare the results with that of BCS theory and analyze the spatial dependence of the local tunneling density of states.

The Superfluid Density in the D-density-wave Scenario

Recently Chakravarty, Laughlin, Morr and Nayak made an interesting proposal that the cuprate superconductors possess a hidden ``d-density wave'' order. We study the implication of this proposal for the superfluid density ρ_s. We find that it predicts a temperature gradient |dρ_s/dT|_{T=0} that is strongly doping dependent near the critical doping (\approx 5%) at which the superconducting transition temperature vanishes.

Proximity to a Nearly Superconducting Quantum Critical Liquid

The coupling between superconductors and a quantum critical liquid that is nearly superconducting provides natural interpretation for the Josephson effect over unexpectedly long junctions, and the remarkable stripe-spacing dependence of the critical temperature in LSCO and YBCO superconductors.

Antiferromagnetism, Stripes, and Superconductivity in the t-J Model with Coulomb Interaction

We study mean-field phases of the t-J model with long-range Coulomb interaction. In the order of increasing doping density we find a classical antiferromagnet, charge and spin stripes, and a uniform d-wave superconductor, at the realistic doping parameters. Both in-phase and anti-phase stripes exist as metastable configurations, but the in-phase stripes have a slightly lower energy. The dependence of the stripe width and the inter-stripe spacing on the doping is examined. Effects of fluctuations around the mean-field states are discussed.

Field Driven Pairing State Phase Transition in d_x^2-y^2+id_xy-Wave Superconductors

Within the framework of the Ginzburg-Landau theory for $d_{x^2-y^2}+id_{xy}$-wave superconductors, we discuss the pairing state phase transition in the absence of the Zeeman coupling between the Cooper pair orbital angular momentum and the magnetic field. We find that above a temperature $T_{\ast}$, the pairing state in a magnetic field is pure $d_{x^{2}-y^{2}}$-wave. However, below $T_{\ast}$, the pairing state is $d_{x^{2}-y^{2}}+id_{xy}$-wave at low fields, and it becomes pure $d_{x^{2}-y^{2}}$-wave at higher fields. Between these pairing states there exists a field driven phase transition . The transition field increases with decreasing temperature. In the field-temperature phase diagram, the phase transition line is obtained theoretically by a combined use of a variational method and the Virial theorem. The analytical result is found to be in good agreement with numerical simulation results of the Gingzburg-Landau equations. The validity of the variational method is discussed. The difference to the case with the Zeeman coupling is discussed, which may be utilized to the detection of the Zeeman coupling.

Sub-Dominant Pairing Channels in Unconventional Superconductors: Ginzburg-Landau Theory

A Ginzburg-Landau theory is developed for unconventional superconductors with the three relevant singlet pairing channels. Various consequences of the sub-dominant channels (i.e., s- and d_{xy}-channels) are examined in detail. (1) In the case of a d_{x^2-y^2}+is-wave superconductor, The structure of a single vortex above and below T_{DS} is four-fold and two-fold symmetric, respectively. (2) In the case of a d_{x^2-y^2}+id_{xy}-wave superconductor, there is also a second order zero-field phase transition from the pure d_{x^2-y^2}-phase to the Time-reversal-symmetry-breaking d_{x^2-y^2}+id_{xy}-wave phase at the temperature T_{DD'}. But the subdominant phase can (not) be induced by vortices above T_{DD'}. Below the time-reversal- symmetry-breaking transition, the sub-dominant phase in the mixed state is nontrivial: it survives at low fields, but may disappear above a field (increasing with decreasing temperature) presumably via a first-order transition. (3)By including the strong coupling effects, a time-reversal-symmetry -breaking coupling term between the d_{x^2-y^2}- and d_{xy}-waves is found to have significant effects on the low temperature behavior of d_{x^2-y^2}+id_{xy} superconductors. In a magnetic field, a d_{x^2-y^2}+id_{xy} state is always established, but the field-dependence of d_{xy}-amplitude above T_{DD'} is different from that below T_{DD'}. Above but not very close to T_{DD'}, the induced minimum gap Delta_0 proportional to B/(T-T_{DD'}).

Zeeman Coupling and Abnormal Thermal Conductivities in BSCCO Superconductors

Using the path-integral formulation we derive microscopically a Ginzburg-Landau free energy with a Zeeman coupling between the magnetic field and the orbital angular momentum of the Cooper pairs in a superconductor with singlet pairing in the $d_{x^{2}-y^{2}}$- and the sub-dominant $d_{xy}$- channels. The Zeeman coupling induces a time-reversal-symmetry-breaking pairing state. Based on careful examinations of the energy gain due to the Zeeman coupling, the energy lost due to the kinetic energy of the excess superfluid, and the Doppler energy shift for quasi-particle excitations, we present a coherent interpretation for the puzzling and conflicting thermal conductivites observed at above 5K (K. Krishana, {\it et al}, Science {\bf 277}, 83(1997)) and at sub-Kelvins (H. Aubin, {\it et al}, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 82}, 624 (1999)).

Vortex dynamics of a $d+is$-wave superconductor

The vortex dynamics of a d+is-wave superconductor is studied numerically by simulating the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equations. The critical fields, the free flux flow, and the flux flow in the presence of twin-boundaries are discussed. The relaxation rate of the order parameter turns out to play an important role in the flux flow. We also address briefly the intrinsic Hall effect in d- and d+is-wave superconductors.
