Design Initiative for a 10 TeV pCM Wakefield Collider

This document outlines a community-driven Design Study for a 10 TeV pCM Wakefield Accelerator Collider. The 2020 ESPP Report emphasized the need for Advanced Accelerator R\&D, and the 2023 P5 Report calls for the ``delivery of an end-to-end design concept, including cost scales, with self-consistent parameters throughout." This Design Study leverages recent experimental and theoretical progress resulting from a global R\&D program in order to deliver a unified, 10 TeV Wakefield Collider concept. Wakefield Accelerators provide ultra-high accelerating gradients which enables an upgrade path that will extend the reach of Linear Colliders beyond the electroweak scale. Here, we describe the organization of the Design Study including timeline and deliverables, and we detail the requirements and challenges on the path to a 10 TeV Wakefield Collider.

Mapping tidal flat topography using time-series Sentinel-2 images and ICESat-2 data: A case study in Cixi City

Tidal flat topography provides crucial insights for understanding tidal flats and their dynamic evolution. However, the wide-ranging and rapidly changing nature of tidal flats, which are periodically submerged in shallow water, pose challenges for many current monitoring methods in terms of both efficiency and precision. In this study, we considered the dynamic process of tidal flat submergence and utilized time-series Sentinel-2 images on Google Earth Engine (GEE) to calculate the tidal flat exposure frequency. This information was used to determine the spatial extent of the tidal flats, and subsequently, by employing ICESat-2 data, we established a 1D-linear regression model based on elevation and frequency values, which realizes the inversion of the tidal flat elevation within Cixi City. The study shows the following: (1) the tidal flat exposure frequency and ICESat-2 elevation data exhibit a strong positive correlation (R2=0.85); (2) the tidal flat area within Cixi City is 115.81 km2, and the overall accuracy is 95.36%; and (3) the elevation range of the tidal flats in the study area is between -0.42 and 2.73 m, and the mean absolute error (MAE) is 0.24 m. Additionally, we consider that the temporal resolution of remote sensing imagery plays a crucial role in determining the accuracy of the elevation inversion, and we found that higher tidal flats exhibit better inversion accuracy than lower tidal flats.

Verifiable Data Sharing Scheme for Dynamic Multi-Owner Setting

One of scenarios in data-sharing applications is that files are managed by multiple owners, and the list of file owners may change dynamically. However, most existing solutions to this problem rely on trusted third parties and have complicated signature permission processes, resulting in additional overhead. Therefore, we propose a verifiable data-sharing scheme (VDS-DM) that can support dynamic multi-owner scenarios. We introduce a management entity that combines linear secret-sharing technology, multi-owner signature generation, and an aggregation technique to allow multi-owner file sharing. Without the help of trusted third parties, VDS-DM can update file signatures for dynamically changing file owners, which helps save communication overhead. Moreover, users independently verify the integrity of files without resorting to a third party. We analyse the security of VDS-DM through a security game. Finally, we conduct enough simulation experiments and the outcomes of experimental demonstrate the feasibility of VDS-DM.

The Optimal Beam-loading in Two-bunch Nonlinear Plasma Wakefield Accelerators

Due to the highly nonlinear nature of the beam-loading, it is at present not possible to analytically determine the beam parameters needed in a two-bunch plasma wakefield accelerator for maintaining a low energy spread. Therefore in this paper, by using the Broyden-Fletcher-Goldfarb-Shanno algorithm for the parameter scanning with the code QuickPIC and the polynomial regression together with k-fold cross-validation method, we obtain two fitting formulas for calculating the parameters of tri-Gaussian electron beams when minimizing the energy spread based on the beam-loading effect in a nonlinear plasma wakefield accelerator. One formula allows the optimization of the normalized charge per unit length of a trailing beam to achieve the minimal energy spread, i.e. the optimal beam-loading. The other one directly gives the transformer ratio when the trailing beam achieves the optimal beam-loading. A simple scaling law for charges of drive beams and trailing beams is obtained from the fitting formula, which indicates that the optimal beam-loading is always achieved for a given charge ratio of the two beams when the length and separation of two beams and the plasma density are fixed. The formulas can also help obtain the optimal plasma densities for the maximum accelerated charge and the maximum acceleration efficiency under the optimal beam-loading respectively. These two fitting formulas will significantly enhance the efficiency for designing and optimizing a two-bunch plasma wakefield acceleration stage.

High efficiency uniform positron beam loading in a hollow channel plasma wakefield accelerator

We propose a novel positron beam loading regime in a hollow plasma channel that can efficiently accelerate $e^+$ beam with high gradient and narrow energy spread. In this regime, the $e^+$ beam coincides with the drive $e^-$ beam in time and space and their net current distribution determines the plasma wakefields. By precisely shaping the beam current profile and loading phase according to explicit expressions, three-dimensional Particle-in-Cell (PIC) simulations show that the acceleration for $e^+$ beam of $\sim$nC charge with $\sim$GV/m gradient, $\lesssim$0.5% induced energy spread and $\sim$50% energy transfer efficiency can be achieved simultaneously. Besides, only tailoring the current profile of the more tunable $e^-$ beam instead of the $e^+$ beam is enough to obtain such favorable results. A theoretical analysis considering both linear and nonlinear plasma responses in hollow plasma channels is proposed to quantify the beam loading effects. This theory agrees very well with the simulation results and verifies the robustness of this beam loading regime over a wide range of parameters.

Robustness of Optimal Energy Thresholds in Photon-counting Spectral CT

An important question when developing photon-counting detectors for computed tomography is how to select energy thresholds. In this work thresholds are optimized by maximizing signal-difference-to-noise ratio squared (SDNR2) in an optimally weighted image and signal-to-noise ratio squared (SNR2) in a gadolinium basis image in a silicon-strip detector and a cadmium zinc telluride (CZT) detector, factoring in pileup and imperfect energy response in both detectors. To investigate to what extent one single set of thresholds could be applied in various imaging tasks, the robustness of optimal thresholds with 2 to 8 bins is examined with the variation of phantom thicknesses and target materials. In contrast to previous studies, the optimal threshold locations don't always increase with increasing attenuation if pileup is included. Optimizing the thresholds for a 30 cm phantom yields near-optimal SDNR2 or SNR2 regardless of target tissue types and surrounding attenuation for both detectors. Having more than 3 bins reduces the need for changing the thresholds depending on anatomies and tissues. Using around 6 bins or 8 bins may give near-optimal SDNR2 or SNR2 without generating an unnecessarily large amount of data.

Relativistic, single-cycle tunable-infrared pulses generated by a tailored plasma density structure

The availability of intense, ultrashort coherent radiation sources in the infrared region of the spectrum is enabling the generation of attosecond X-ray pulses via high harmonic generation, pump-probe experiments in the "molecular fingerprint" region and opening up the area of relativistic-infrared nonlinear optics of plasmas. These applications would benefit from multi-millijoule single-cycle pulses in the mid to long wavelength infrared (LW-IR) region. Here we present a new scheme capable of producing tunable relativistically intense, single-cycle infrared pulses from 5-14$μ$m with a 1.7% conversion efficiency based on a photon frequency downshifting scheme that uses a tailored plasma density structure. The carrier-envelope phase (CEP) of the LW-IR pulse is locked to that of the drive laser to within a few percent. Such a versatile tunable IR source may meet the demands of many cutting-edge applications in strong-field physics and greatly promote their development.
