Deep Convolutional Compression for Massive MIMO CSI Feedback

Coded caching provides significant gains over conventional uncoded caching by creating multicasting opportunities among distinct requests. Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems require downlink channel state information (CSI) at the base station (BS) to better utilize the available spatial diversity and multiplexing gains. However, in a frequency division duplex (FDD) massive MIMO system, the huge CSI feedback overhead becomes restrictive and degrades the overall spectral efficiency. In this paper, we propose a deep learning based channel state matrix compression scheme, called DeepCMC, composed of convolutional layers followed by quantization and entropy coding blocks. In comparison with previous works, the main contributions of DeepCMC are two-fold: i) DeepCMC is fully convolutional, and it can be used in a wide range of scenarios with various numbers of sub-channels and transmit antennas; ii) DeepCMC includes quantization and entropy coding blocks and minimizes a cost function that accounts for both the rate of compression and the reconstruction quality of the channel matrix at the BS. Simulation results demonstrate that DeepCMC significantly outperforms the state of the art compression schemes in terms of the reconstruction quality of the channel state matrix for the same compression rate, measured in bits per channel dimension.

Centralized Caching and Delivery of Correlated Contents over Gaussian Broadcast Channels

Content delivery in a multi-user cache-aided broadcast network is studied, where a server holding a database of correlated contents communicates with the users over a Gaussian broadcast channel (BC). The minimum transmission power required to satisfy all possible demand combinations is studied, when the users are equipped with caches of equal size. Assuming uncoded cache placement, a lower bound on the required transmit power as a function of the cache capacity is derived. An achievable centralized caching scheme is proposed, which not only utilizes the user's local caches, but also exploits the correlation among the contents in the database. The performance of the scheme, which provides an upper bound on the required transmit power for a given cache capacity, is characterized. Our results indicate that exploiting the correlations among the contents in a cache-aided Gaussain BC can provide significant energy savings.

Computational modelling of cardiac ischaemia using a variable-order fractional Laplacian

Heart failure is one of the most common causes of death in the western world. Many heart problems are linked to disturbances in cardiac electrical activity, such as wave re-entry caused by ischaemia. In terms of mathematical modelling, the monodomain equation is widely used to model electrical activity in the heart. Recently, Bueno-Orovio et al. [J. R. Soc. Interface 11: 20140352, 2014] pioneered the use of a fractional Laplacian operator in the monodomain equation to account for the complex heterogeneous structures in heart tissue. In this work we consider how to extend this approach to apply to hearts with regions of damaged tissue. This requires the use of a fractional Laplacian operator whose fractional order varies spatially. We develop efficient numerical methods capable of solving this challenging problem on domains ranging from simple one-dimensional intervals with uniform meshes, through to full three-dimensional geometries on unstructured meshes. Results are presented for several test problems in one dimension, demonstrating the effects of different fractional orders in regions of healthy and damaged tissue. Then we showcase some new results for a three-dimensional fractional monodomain equation with a Beeler-Reuter ionic current model on a rabbit heart mesh. These simulation results are found to exhibit wave re-entry behaviour, brought about only by varying the value of the fractional order in a region representing damaged tissue.

The relationships between PM2.5 and AOD in China: About and behind spatiotemporal variations

Satellite aerosol products have been widely used to retrieve ground PM2.5 concentration because of its wide coverage and continuously spatial distribution. While more and more studies focus on the retrieval algorithm, we find that the relationship between PM2.5 concentration and satellite AOD has not been fully discussed in China. Is satellite AOD always a good indicator for PM2.5 in different regions and can AOD still be employed to retrieve PM2.5 with pollution conditions changing in these years remain unclear. In this study, the relationships between PM2.5 and AOD were investigated in 368 cities in China for a continuous period from February 2013 to December 2017, at different time and regional scales. Pearson correlation coefficients and PM2.5/AOD ratio were used as the indicator. Firstly, we concluded the relationship of PM2.5 and AOD in terms of spatiotemporal variations. Then the impact of meteorological factors, aerosol size and topography were discussed. Finally, a GWR retrieval experiment was conducted to find out how was the retrieval accuracy changing with the varying of PM2.5-AOD relationship. We found that spatially the correlation is higher in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei and Chengyu region and weaker in coastal areas such as Yangtze River Delta and Pearl River Delta. The PM2.5/AOD ratio has obvious North-South difference with a high ratio in north China and a lower ratio in south China. Temporally, PM2.5/AOD ratio is higher in winter and lower in summer, the correlation coefficient tends to be higher in May and September. As for interannual variations from 2013 to 2017, we detected a declining tendency on PM2.5/AOD ratio. The accuracy of GWR retrievals were decreasing too, which may imply that AOD may not be a good indicator for PM2.5 in the future.

Audience-Retention-Rate-Aware Caching and Coded Video Delivery with Asynchronous Demands

Most results on coded caching focus on a static scenario, in which a fixed number of users synchronously place their requests from a content library, and the performance is measured in terms of the latency in satisfying all of these demands. In practice, however, users start watching an online video content asynchronously over time, and often abort watching a video before it is completed. The latter behaviour is captured by the notion of audience retention rate, which measures the portion of a video content watched on average. In order to bring coded caching one step closer to practice, asynchronous user demands are considered in this paper, by allowing user demands to arrive randomly over time, and both the popularity of video files, and the audience retention rates are taken into account. A decentralized partial coded caching (PCC) scheme is proposed, together with two cache allocation schemes; namely the optimal cache allocation (OCA) and the popularity-based cache allocation (PCA), which allocate users' caches among different chunks of the video files in the library. Numerical results validate that the proposed PCC scheme, either with OCA or PCA, outperforms conventional uncoded caching as well as the state-of-the-art decentralized caching schemes, which consider only the file popularities, and are designed for synchronous demand arrivals. An information-theoretical lower bound on the average delivery rate is also presented.

A generalization of a theorem of Hoffman

In 1977, Hoffman gave a characterization of graphs with smallest eigenvalue at least $-2$. In this paper we generalize this result to graphs with smaller smallest eigenvalue. For the proof, we use a combinatorial object named Hoffman graph, introduced by Woo and Neumaier in 1995. Our result says that for every $λ\leq -2$, if a graph with smallest eigenvalue at least $λ$ satisfies some local conditions, then it is highly structured. We apply our result to graphs which are cospectral with the Hamming graph $H(3,q)$, the Johnson graph $J(v, 3)$ and the $2$-clique extension of grids, respectively.

On the integrability of strongly regular graphs

Koolen et al. showed that if a connected graph with smallest eigenvalue at least $-3$ has large minimal valency, then it is $2$-integrable. In this paper, we will prove that a lower bound for the minimal valency is 166.

Centralized Caching and Delivery of Correlated Contents over a Gaussian Broadcast Channel

The minimum transmission power required to satisfy all possible demand combinations is studied, when the users are equipped with caches of equal size. A lower bound on the required transmit power is derived, assuming uncoded cache placement, as a function of the cache capacity. This scheme provides an upper bound on the minimum required transmit power for a given cache capacity. Our results indicate that exploiting the correlations among the contents in a cache-aided Gaussian BC can provide significant energy savings.

Coded Caching and Content Delivery with Heterogeneous Distortion Requirements

Cache-aided coded content delivery is studied for devices with diverse quality-of-service (QoS) requirements, specified by a different average distortion target. The network consists of a server holding a database of independent contents, and users equipped with local caches of different capacities. User caches are filled by the server during a low traffic period without the knowledge of particular user demands. As opposed to the current literature, which assumes that the users request files in their entirety, it is assumed that the users in the system have distinct distortion requirements; and therefore, each user requests a single file from the database to be served at a different distortion level. Our goal in this work is to characterize the minimum delivery rate the server needs to transmit over an error-free shared link to satisfy all possible demand combinations at the requested distortion levels, considering both centralized and decentralized cache placement.

The Multi-layer Information Bottleneck Problem

The muti-layer information bottleneck (IB) problem, where information is propagated (or successively refined) from layer to layer, is considered. Based on information forwarded by the preceding layer, each stage of the network is required to preserve a certain level of relevance with regards to a specific hidden variable, quantified by the mutual information. The hidden variables and the source can be arbitrarily correlated. The optimal trade-off between rates of relevance and compression (or complexity) is obtained through a single-letter characterization, referred to as the rate-relevance region. Conditions of successive refinabilty are given. Binary source with BSC hidden variables and binary source with BSC/BEC mixed hidden variables are both proved to be successively refinable. We further extend our result to Guassian models. A counterexample of successive refinability is also provided.

Centralized Coded Caching of Correlated Contents

Coded caching and delivery is studied taking into account the correlations among the contents in the library. Correlations are modeled as common parts shared by multiple contents; that is, each file in the database is composed of a group of subfiles, where each subfile is shared by a different subset of files. The number of files that include a certain subfile is defined as the level of commonness of this subfile. First, a correlation-aware uncoded caching scheme is proposed, and it is shown that the optimal placement for this scheme gives priority to the subfiles with the highest levels of commonness. Then a correlation-aware coded caching scheme is presented, and the cache capacity allocated to subfiles with different levels of commonness is optimized in order to minimize the delivery rate. The proposed correlation-aware coded caching scheme is shown to remarkably outperform state-of-the-art correlation-ignorant solutions, indicating the benefits of exploiting content correlations in coded caching and delivery in networks.

The relationships between PM2.5 and meteorological factors in China: Seasonal and regional variations

The interactions between PM2.5 and meteorological factors play a crucial role in air pollution analysis. However, previous studies that have researched the relationships between PM2.5 concentration and meteorological conditions have been mainly confined to a certain city or district, and the correlation over the whole of China remains unclear. Whether or not spatial and seasonal variations exit deserves further research. In this study, the relationships between PM2.5 concentration and meteorological factors were investigated in 74 major cities in China for a continuous period of 22 months from February 2013 to November 2014, at season, year, city, and regional scales, and the spatial and seasonal variations were analyzed. The meteorological factors were relative humidity (RH), temperature (TEM), wind speed (WS), and surface pressure (PS). We found that spatial and seasonal variations of their relationships with PM2.5 do exist. Spatially, RH is positively correlated with PM2.5 concentration in North China and Urumqi, but the relationship turns to negative in other areas of China. WS is negatively correlated with PM2.5 everywhere expect for Hainan Island. PS has a strong positive relationship with PM2.5 concentration in Northeast China and Mid-south China, and in other areas the correlation is weak. Seasonally, the positive correlation between PM2.5 concentration and RH is stronger in winter and spring. TEM has a negative relationship with PM2.5 in autumn and the opposite in winter. PS is more positively correlated with PM2.5 in autumn than in other seasons. Our study investigated the relationships between PM2.5 and meteorological factors in terms of spatial and seasonal variations, and the conclusions about the relationships between PM2.5 and meteorological factors are more comprehensive and precise than before.

Decentralized Caching and Coded Delivery with Distinct Cache Capacities

Decentralized proactive caching and coded delivery is studied in a content delivery network, where each user is equipped with a cache memory, not necessarily of equal capacity. Cache memories are filled in advance during the off-peak traffic period in a decentralized manner, i.e., without the knowledge of the number of active users, their identities, or their particular demands. User demands are revealed during the peak traffic period, and are served simultaneously through an error-free shared link. The goal is to find the minimum delivery rate during the peak traffic period that is sufficient to satisfy all possible demand combinations. A group-based decentralized caching and coded delivery scheme is proposed, and it is shown to improve upon the state-of-the-art in terms of the minimum required delivery rate when there are more users in the system than files. Numerical results indicate that the improvement is more significant as the cache capacities of the users become more skewed. A new lower bound on the delivery rate is also presented, which provides a tighter bound than the classical cut-set bound.

Decentralized Coded Caching with Distinct Cache Capacities

Decentralized coded caching is studied for a content server with $N$ files, each of size $F$ bits, serving $K$ active users, each equipped with a cache of distinct capacity. It is assumed that the users' caches are filled in advance during the off-peak traffic period without the knowledge of the number of active users, their identities, or the particular demands. User demands are revealed during the peak traffic period, and are served simultaneously through an error-free shared link. A new decentralized coded caching scheme is proposed for this scenario, and it is shown to improve upon the state-of-the-art in terms of the required delivery rate over the shared link, when there are more users in the system than the number of files. Numerical results indicate that the improvement becomes more significant as the cache capacities of the users become more skewed.

An application of Hoffman graphs for spectral characterizations of graphs

In this paper, we present the first application of Hoffman graphs for spectral characterizations of graphs. In particular, we show that the $2$-clique extension of the $(t+1)\times(t+1)$-grid is determined by its spectrum when $t$ is large enough. This result will help to show that the Grassmann graph $J_2(2D,D)$ is determined by its intersection numbers as a distance regular graph, if $D$ is large enough.

Coded Caching for a Large Number Of Users

Information theoretic analysis of a coded caching system is considered, in which a server with a database of N equal-size files, each F bits long, serves K users. Each user is assumed to have a local cache that can store M files, i.e., capacity of MF bits. Proactive caching to user terminals is considered, in which the caches are filled by the server in advance during the placement phase, without knowing the user requests. Each user requests a single file, and all the requests are satisfied simultaneously through a shared error-free link during the delivery phase. First, centralized coded caching is studied assuming both the number and the identity of the active users in the delivery phase are known by the server during the placement phase. A novel group-based centralized coded caching (GBC) scheme is proposed for a cache capacity of M = N/K. It is shown that this scheme achieves a smaller delivery rate than all the known schemes in the literature. The improvement is then extended to a wider range of cache capacities through memory-sharing between the proposed scheme and other known schemes in the literature. Next, the proposed centralized coded caching idea is exploited in the decentralized setting, in which the identities of the users that participate in the delivery phase are assumed to be unknown during the placement phase. It is shown that the proposed decentralized caching scheme also achieves a delivery rate smaller than the state-of-the-art. Numerical simulations are also presented to corroborate our theoretical results.
