How to Evaluate the Generalization of Detection? A Benchmark for Comprehensive Open-Vocabulary Detection

Object detection (OD) in computer vision has made significant progress in recent years, transitioning from closed-set labels to open-vocabulary detection (OVD) based on large-scale vision-language pre-training (VLP). However, current evaluation methods and datasets are limited to testing generalization over object types and referral expressions, which do not provide a systematic, fine-grained, and accurate benchmark of OVD models' abilities. In this paper, we propose a new benchmark named OVDEval, which includes 9 sub-tasks and introduces evaluations on commonsense knowledge, attribute understanding, position understanding, object relation comprehension, and more. The dataset is meticulously created to provide hard negatives that challenge models' true understanding of visual and linguistic input. Additionally, we identify a problem with the popular Average Precision (AP) metric when benchmarking models on these fine-grained label datasets and propose a new metric called Non-Maximum Suppression Average Precision (NMS-AP) to address this issue. Extensive experimental results show that existing top OVD models all fail on the new tasks except for simple object types, demonstrating the value of the proposed dataset in pinpointing the weakness of current OVD models and guiding future research. Furthermore, the proposed NMS-AP metric is verified by experiments to provide a much more truthful evaluation of OVD models, whereas traditional AP metrics yield deceptive results. Symbiotic Blockchain Consensus: Cognitive Backscatter Communications-enabled Wireless Blockchain Consensus

The wireless blockchain network (WBN) concept, born from the blockchain deployed in wireless networks, has appealed to many network scenarios. Blockchain consensus mechanisms (CMs) are key to enabling nodes in a wireless network to achieve consistency without any trusted entity. However, consensus reliability will be seriously affected by the instability of communication links in wireless networks. Meanwhile, it is difficult for nodes in wireless scenarios to obtain a timely energy supply. Energy-intensive blockchain functions can quickly drain the power of nodes, thus degrading consensus performance. Fortunately, a symbiotic radio (SR) system enabled by cognitive backscatter communications can solve the above problems. In SR, the secondary transmitter (STx) transmits messages over the radio frequency (RF) signal emitted from a primary transmitter (PTx) with extremely low energy consumption, and the STx can provide multipath gain to the PTx in return. Such an approach is useful for almost all vote-based CMs, such as the Practical Byzantine Fault-tolerant (PBFT)-like and the RAFT-like CMs. This paper proposes symbiotic blockchain consensus (SBC) by transforming 6 PBFT-like and 4 RAFT-like state-of-the-art (SOTA) CMs to demonstrate universality. These new CMs will benefit from mutualistic transmission relationships in SR, making full use of the limited spectrum resources in WBN. Simulation results show that SBC can increase the consensus success rate of PBFT-like and RAFT-like by 54.1% and 5.8%, respectively, and reduce energy consumption by 9.2% and 23.7%, respectively.

Hierarchical Cognitive Spectrum Sharing in Space-Air-Ground Integrated Networks

In space-air-ground integrated networks (SAGINs), cognitive spectrum sharing has been regarded as a promising solution to improve spectrum efficiency by enabling a secondary network to access the spectrum of a primary network. However, different networks in SAGIN may have different quality of service (QoS) requirements, which can not be well satisfied with the traditional cognitive spectrum sharing architecture. For example, the aerial network typically has high QoS requirements, which however may not be met when it acts as a secondary network. To address this issue, in this paper, we propose a hierarchical cognitive spectrum sharing architecture (HCSSA) for SAGINs, where the secondary networks are divided into a preferential one and an ordinary one. Specifically, the aerial and terrestrial networks can access the spectrum of the satellite network under the condition that the caused interference to the satellite terminal is below a certain threshold. Besides, considering that the aerial network has a higher priority than the terrestrial network, we aim to use a rate constraint to ensure the performance of the aerial network. Subject to these two constraints, we consider a sum-rate maximization for the terrestrial network by jointly optimizing the transmit beamforming vectors of the aerial and terrestrial base stations. To solve this non-convex problem, we propose a penalty-based iterative beamforming (PIBF) scheme that uses the penalty method and the successive convex approximation technique. Moreover, we also develop three low-complexity schemes by optimizing the normalized beamforming vectors and power control. Finally, we provide extensive numerical simulations to compare the performance of the proposed PIBF scheme and the low-complexity schemes. The results also demonstrate the advantages of the proposed HCSSA compared with the traditional cognitive spectrum sharing architecture.

Assistance-Transmission Tradeoff for RIS-assisted Symbiotic Radios

This paper studies the reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted symbiotic radio (SR) system, where an RIS acts as a secondary transmitter to transmit its information by leveraging the primary signal as its RF carrier and simultaneously assists the primary transmission. Conventionally, all reflecting elements of the RIS are used to transmit the secondary signal, which, however, would limit its capability for assisting the primary transmission. To address this issue, we propose a novel RIS partitioning scheme, where the RIS is partitioned into two sub-surfaces, one to assist the primary transmission and the other to transmit the secondary signal. Naturally, there exists a fundamental tradeoff between the assistance and transmission capabilities of RIS regarding the surface partitioning strategy. Considering the coupling effect between the primary and secondary transmissions, we focus on the detection of the composite signal formed by the primary and secondary ones, based on which we propose a novel two-step detector. Then, we formulate the assistance-transmission tradeoff problem to minimize the bit error rate (BER) of the composite signal by jointly optimizing the surface partitioning strategy and the phase shifts of the two sub-surfaces, such that the overall BER of RIS-assisted SR is minimized. By solving this problem, we show that the optimized surface partitioning strategy depends on the channel strength ratio of the direct link to the reflected link. Finally, extensive simulations show that our proposed RIS partitioning scheme outperforms the conventional schemes which use all reflecting elements for either assistance or transmission.

Pilot Design and Signal Detection for Symbiotic Radio over OFDM Carriers

Symbiotic radio (SR) is a promising solution to achieve high spectrum- and energy-efficiency due to its spectrum sharing and low-power consumption properties, in which the secondary system achieves data transmissions by backscattering the signal originating from the primary system. In this paper, we are interested in the pilot design and signal detection when the primary transmission adopts orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). In particular, to preserve the channel orthogonality among the OFDM sub-carriers, each secondary symbol is designed to span an entire OFDM symbol. The comb-type pilot structure is employed by the primary transmission, while the preamble pilot structure is used by the secondary transmission. With the designed pilot structures, the primary signal can be detected via the conventional methods by treating the secondary signal as a part of the composite channel, i.e., the effective channel of the primary transmission. Furthermore, the secondary signal can be extracted from the estimated composite channel with the help of the detected primary signal. The bit error rate (BER) performance with both perfect and estimated CSI, the diversity orders of the primary and secondary transmissions, and the sensitivity to symbol synchronization error are analyzed. Simulation results show that the performance of the primary transmission is enhanced thanks to the backscatter link established by the secondary transmission. More importantly, even without the direct link, the primary and secondary transmissions can be supported via only the backscatter link.

Application-layer Characterization and Traffic Analysis for Encrypted QUIC Transport Protocol

Quick UDP Internet Connection (QUIC) is an emerging end-to-end encrypted, transport-layer protocol, which has been increasingly adopted by popular web services to improve communication security and quality of experience (QoE) towards end-users. However, this tendency makes the traffic analysis more challenging, given the limited information in the QUIC packet header and full encryption on the payload. To address this challenge, a novel rule-based approach is proposed to estimate the application-level traffic attributes without decrypting QUIC packets. Based on the size, timing, and direction information, our proposed algorithm analyzes the associated network traffic to infer the identity of each HTTP request and response pair, as well as the multiplexing feature in each QUIC connection. The inferred HTTP attributes can be used to evaluate the QoE of application-layer services and identify the service categories for traffic classification in the encrypted QUIC connections.

Decentralized Control for Discrete-time Mean-Field Systems with Multiple Controllers of Delayed Information

In this paper, the finite horizon asymmetric information linear quadratic (LQ) control problem is investigated for a discrete-time mean field system. Different from previous works, multiple controllers with different information sets are involved in the mean field system dynamics. The coupling of different controllers makes it quite difficult in finding the optimal control strategy. Fortunately, by applying the Pontryagin's maximum principle, the corresponding decentralized control problem of the finite horizon is investigated. The contributions of this paper can be concluded as: For the first time, based on the solution of a group of mean-field forward and backward stochastic difference equations (MF-FBSDEs), the necessary and sufficient solvability conditions are derived for the asymmetric information LQ control for the mean field system with multiple controllers. Furthermore, by the use of an innovative orthogonal decomposition approach, the optimal decentralized control strategy is derived, which is based on the solution to a non-symmetric Riccati-type equation.

Symbiotic PBFT Consensus: Cognitive Backscatter Communications-enabled Wireless PBFT Consensus

Wireless blockchain networks have played an important role in many network scenarios, among which wireless Practical Byzantine Fault Tolerance (PBFT) consensus is regarded as one of the most important consensus mechanisms. It enables nodes in wireless networks to reach consistency without any trusted entity. However, due to the instability of wireless communication links, the reliability of the PBFT consensus will be seriously affected. Meanwhile, it is difficult for nodes in wireless scenarios to obtain a timely energy supply. The high-energy-consumption blockchain functions will quickly consume the power of nodes, thus, affecting consensus performance. Fortunately, the symbiotic radio (SR) system enabled by cognitive backscatter communications can provide a solution to the above problems. In SR, the secondary transmitter (STx) transmits messages by modulating its information over the radio frequency (RF) signal of the primary transmitter (PTx) with extremely low energy consumption, and the STx can provide multipath gain to the PTx in return. In our paper, we propose the symbiotic PBFT (S-PBFT) consensus benefited from the mutualistic transmission in SR, which can increase the consensus security by 54.82%, and save energy consumption by about 10%.

Multiple Access Design for Symbiotic Radios: Facilitating Massive IoT Connections with Cellular Networks

Symbiotic radio (SR) has emerged as a spectrum- and energy-efficient paradigm to support massive Internet of Things (IoT) connections. Two multiple access schemes are proposed in this paper to facilitate the massive IoT connections using the cellular network based on the SR technique, namely, the simultaneous access (SA) scheme and the selection diversity access (SDA) scheme. In the SA scheme, the base station (BS) transmits information to the receiver while multiple IoT devices transmit their information simultaneously by passively backscattering the BS signal to the receiver, while in the SDA scheme, only the IoT device with the strongest backscatter link transmits information to the receiver. In both of the schemes, the receiver jointly decodes the information from the BS and the IoT devices. To evaluate the above two schemes, in this paper, we have derived the closed-form expressions of the ergodic rates and the outage probabilities for the cellular and IoT transmissions. Finally, numerical results are provided to verify the theoretical analysis and compare the two proposed multiple access schemes. When the number of IoT devices is small, the SDA scheme is more appealing since it can significantly reduce the computational complexity while achieving equivalent performance to the SA scheme. When the number of IoT devices is large, the SA scheme is preferable since it guarantees a significantly better rate performance and a lower outage probability.

Leaving No One Behind: A Multi-Scenario Multi-Task Meta Learning Approach for Advertiser Modeling

Advertisers play an essential role in many e-commerce platforms like Taobao and Amazon. Fulfilling their marketing needs and supporting their business growth is critical to the long-term prosperity of platform economies. However, compared with extensive studies on user modeling such as click-through rate predictions, much less attention has been drawn to advertisers, especially in terms of understanding their diverse demands and performance. Different from user modeling, advertiser modeling generally involves many kinds of tasks (e.g. predictions of advertisers' expenditure, active-rate, or total impressions of promoted products). In addition, major e-commerce platforms often provide multiple marketing scenarios (e.g. Sponsored Search, Display Ads, Live Streaming Ads) while advertisers' behavior tend to be dispersed among many of them. This raises the necessity of multi-task and multi-scenario consideration in comprehensive advertiser modeling, which faces the following challenges: First, one model per scenario or per task simply doesn't scale; Second, it is particularly hard to model new or minor scenarios with limited data samples; Third, inter-scenario correlations are complicated, and may vary given different tasks. To tackle these challenges, we propose a multi-scenario multi-task meta learning approach (M2M) which simultaneously predicts multiple tasks in multiple advertising scenarios.

Semi-Supervised Learning for Channel Charting-Aided IoT Localization in Millimeter Wave Networks

In this paper, a novel framework is proposed for channel charting (CC)-aided localization in millimeter wave networks. In particular, a convolutional autoencoder model is proposed to estimate the three-dimensional location of wireless user equipment (UE), based on multipath channel state information (CSI), received by different base stations. In order to learn the radio-geometry map and capture the relative position of each UE, an autoencoder-based channel chart is constructed in an unsupervised manner, such that neighboring UEs in the physical space will remain close in the channel chart. Next, the channel charting model is extended to a semi-supervised framework, where the autoencoder is divided into two components: an encoder and a decoder, and each component is optimized individually, using the labeled CSI dataset with associated location information, to further improve positioning accuracy. Simulation results show that the proposed CC-aided semi-supervised localization yields a higher accuracy, compared with existing supervised positioning and conventional unsupervised CC approaches.

Millimeter Wave Communications with an Intelligent Reflector: Performance Optimization and Distributional Reinforcement Learning

In this paper, a novel framework is proposed to optimize the downlink multi-user communication of a millimeter wave base station, which is assisted by a reconfigurable intelligent reflector (IR). In particular, a channel estimation approach is developed to measure the channel state information (CSI) in real-time. First, for a perfect CSI scenario, the precoding transmission of the BS and the reflection coefficient of the IR are jointly optimized, via an iterative approach, so as to maximize the sum of downlink rates towards multiple users. Next, in the imperfect CSI scenario, a distributional reinforcement learning (DRL) approach is proposed to learn the optimal IR reflection and maximize the expectation of downlink capacity. In order to model the transmission rate's probability distribution, a learning algorithm, based on quantile regression (QR), is developed, and the proposed QR-DRL method is proved to converge to a stable distribution of downlink transmission rate. Simulation results show that, in the error-free CSI scenario, the proposed approach yields over 30% and 2-fold increase in the downlink sum-rate, compared with a fixed IR reflection scheme and direct transmission scheme, respectively. Simulation results also show that by deploying more IR elements, the downlink sum-rate can be significantly improved. However, as the number of IR components increases, more time is required for channel estimation, and the slope of increase in the IR-aided transmission rate will become smaller. Furthermore, under limited knowledge of CSI, simulation results show that the proposed QR-DRL method, which learns a full distribution of the downlink rate, yields a better prediction accuracy and improves the downlink rate by 10% for online deployments, compared with a Q-learning baseline.

Distributed Conditional Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) for Data-Driven Millimeter Wave Communications in UAV Networks

In this paper, a novel framework is proposed to perform data-driven air-to-ground (A2G) channel estimation for millimeter wave (mmWave) communications in an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) wireless network. First, an effective channel estimation approach is developed to collect mmWave channel information, allowing each UAV to train a stand-alone channel model via a conditional generative adversarial network (CGAN) along each beamforming direction. Next, in order to expand the application scenarios of the trained channel model into a broader spatial-temporal domain, a cooperative framework, based on a distributed CGAN architecture, is developed, allowing each UAV to collaboratively learn the mmWave channel distribution in a fully-distributed manner. To guarantee an efficient learning process, necessary and sufficient conditions for the optimal UAV network topology that maximizes the learning rate for cooperative channel modeling are derived, and the optimal CGAN learning solution per UAV is subsequently characterized, based on the distributed network structure. Simulation results show that the proposed distributed CGAN approach is robust to the local training error at each UAV. Meanwhile, a larger airborne network size requires more communication resources per UAV to guarantee an efficient learning rate. The results also show that, compared with a stand-alone CGAN without information sharing and two other distributed schemes, namely: A multi-discriminator CGAN and a federated CGAN method, the proposed distributed CGAN approach yields a higher modeling accuracy while learning the environment, and it achieves a larger average data rate in the online performance of UAV downlink mmWave communications.

Global Dynamics of a Predator-Prey Model with State-Dependent Maturation-Delay

In this paper, a stage structured predator-prey model with general nonlinear type of functional response is established and analyzed. The state-dependent time delay (hereafter SDTD) is the time taken from predator's birth to its maturity, formatted as a monotonical (ly) increasing, continuous(ly) differentiable and bounded function on the number of mature predator. The model is quite different from many previous models with SDTD, in the sense that the derivative of delay on the time is involved in the model. First, we have shown that for a large class of commonly used types of functional responses, including Holling types I, II and III, Beddington-DeAngelis-type (hereafter BD-type), etc, the predator coexists with the prey permanently if and only if the predator's net reproduction number is larger than one unit; Secondly, we have discussed the local stability of the equilibria of the model; Finally, for the special case of BD-type functional response, we claim that if the system is permanent, that is, the derivative of SDTD on the state is small enough and the predator interference is large enough, then the coexistence equilibrium is globally asymptotically stable.

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface Assisted MIMO Symbiotic Radio Networks

In this paper, a novel reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) symbiotic radio (SR) system is proposed, in which an RIS, operating as a secondary transmitter (STx), sends messages to a multi-antenna secondary receiver (SRx) by using cognitive backscattering communication, and simultaneously, it enhances the primary transmission from a multi-antenna primary transmitter (PTx) to a multi-antenna primary receiver (PRx) by intelligently reconfiguring the wireless environment. We are interested in the joint design of active transmit beamformer at the PTx and passive reflecting beamformer at the STx to minimize the total transmit power at the PTx, subject to the signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) constraint for the secondary transmission and the rate constraint for the primary transmission. Due to the non-convexity of the formulated problem, we decouple the original problem into a series of subproblems using the alternating optimization method and then iteratively solve them. The convergence performance and computational complexity of the proposed algorithm are analyzed. Furthermore, we develop a low-complexity algorithm to design the reflecting beamformer by solving a backscatter link enhancement problem through the semi-definite relaxation (SDR) technique. Then, theoretical analysis is performed to reveal the insights of the proposed system. Finally, simulation results are presented to validate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms and the superiority of the proposed system.

Symbiotic Communications: Where Marconi Meets Darwin

With the proliferation of wireless applications, the electromagnetic (EM) space is becoming more and more crowded and complex. This makes it a challenging task to accommodate the growing number of radio systems with limited radio resources. In this paper, by considering the EM space as a radio ecosystem, and leveraging the analogy to the natural ecosystem in biology, a novel symbiotic communication (SC) paradigm is proposed through which the relevant radio systems, called symbiotic radios (SRs), in a radio ecosystem form a symbiotic relationship (e.g., mutualistic symbiosis) through intelligent resource/service exchange. Radio resources include, e.g., spectrum, energy, and infrastructure, while typical radio services are communicating, relaying, and computing. The symbiotic relationship can be realized via either symbiotic coevolution or symbiotic synthesis. In symbiotic coevolution, each SR is empowered with an evolutionary cycle alongside the multi-agent learning, while in symbiotic synthesis, the SRs ingeniously optimize their operating parameters and transmission protocols by solving a multi-objective optimization problem. Promisingly, the proposed SC paradigm breaks the boundary of radio systems, thus providing us a fresh perspective on radio resource management and new guidelines to design future wireless communication systems.

Distributed Generative Adversarial Networks for mmWaveChannel Modeling in Wireless UAV Networks

In this paper, a novel framework is proposed to enable air-to-ground channel modeling over millimeter wave (mmWave) frequencies in an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) wireless network. First, an effective channel estimation approach is developed to collect mmWave channel information allowing each UAV to train a local channel model via a generative adversarial network (GAN). Next, in order to share the channel information between UAVs in a privacy-preserving manner, a cooperative framework, based on a distributed GAN architecture, is developed to enable each UAV to learn the mmWave channel distribution from the entire dataset in a fully distributed approach. The necessary and sufficient conditions for the optimal network structure that maximizes the learning rate for information sharing in the distributed network are derived. Simulation results show that the learning rate of the proposed GAN approach will increase by sharing more generated channel samples at each learning iteration, but decrease given more UAVs in the network. The results also show that the proposed GAN method yields a higher learning accuracy, compared with a standalone GAN, and improves the average rate for UAV downlink communications by over 10%, compared with a baseline real-time channel estimation scheme.

SAR Image Despeckling Based on Convolutional Denoising Autoencoder

In Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imaging, despeckling is very important for image analysis, whereas speckle is known as a kind of multiplicative noise caused by the coherent imaging system. During the past three decades, various algorithms have been proposed to denoise the SAR image. Generally, the BM3D is considered as the state of art technique to despeckle the speckle noise with excellent performance. More recently, deep learning make a success in image denoising and achieved a improvement over conventional method where large train dataset is required. Unlike most of the images SAR image despeckling approach, the proposed approach learns the speckle from corrupted images directly. In this paper, the limited scale of dataset make a efficient exploration by using convolutioal denoising autoencoder (C-DAE) to reconstruct the speckle-free SAR images. Batch normalization strategy is integrated with C- DAE to speed up the train time. Moreover, we compute image quality in standard metrics, PSNR and SSIM. It is revealed that our approach perform well than some others.
