Surveying the Universe in 4D: Beating Cosmic Variance with Wide-Field Slitless Spectroscopy from HST, JWST, Euclid, Roman, and Beyond

We summarize strategies, lessons learned, and future directions from the Space Telescope Science Institute workshop Surveying the Universe in 4D: Beating Cosmic Variance with Wide-Field Slitless Spectroscopy from HST, JWST, Euclid, Roman, and Beyond, held August 24--28, 2026. The workshop examined scientific results, observational and data analysis challenges, extraction tools, and future opportunities. Discussions highlighted (1) the transformative potential of WFSS for the study of transient phenomena, galaxy evolution --both spatially-resolved and within the broader context of the cosmic web--, and rare populations and (2) the synergies among Euclid and Roman surveys, Rubin-LSST monitoring, JWST WFSS, and high-resolution integral-field observations. Participants identified advances in forward modeling and physics-informed machine learning as essential for addressing spectral overlap, crowded fields, and upcoming, very large data volumes. Realizing WFSS's full potential will require community-wide infrastructure, science-ready data products, accessible cloud-based analysis tools, and robust benchmarking of reduction pipelines. Crucially, participants called for systemic changes to properly recognize early-career researchers who invest significant efforts in pipeline, code, and calibration developments that enable WFSS science, and stressed that progress requires collaborative, multidisciplinary practices that optimize the participation and benefits of the next generation.

Pandora cluster Lensing, AGN, and Transient Exploration (PLATE) from JWST Multi-Epoch Imaging. I. Discovery of a type II supernova candidate in a spiral galaxy at $z=0.7$

We report the discovery and multi-wavelength analysis of a $z\sim0.7$ transient PLATE-23a in the Abell 2744 field, as the first results of the Pandora Lensing, AGN, and Transient Exploration (PLATE) project. Using multi-epoch JWST NIRCam imaging spanning from 2022 to 2025, we detect PLATE-23a in 12 filters. Difference-imaging analysis reveals its rising and declining phases. The host galaxy of PLATE-23a is a barred spiral at $z=0.688$ with a stellar mass of $\sim 10^{10.4}M_{\odot}$ and a star formation rate of $\sim5.1M_{\odot}~\rm yr^{-1}$, placing it on the star-forming main sequence. Bayesian light-curve classification strongly favors a type IIP supernova (SN) origin. It lies $\sim 13\rm kpc$ (after lensing correction) from the galaxy center in a region of low local star formation, suggesting the progenitor may have migrated from a distant star-forming clump. Physical properties derived from blackbody modeling indicate a temperature decreasing from $\sim8010\rm K$ to $\sim6100\rm K$ at around 65 days after the explosion; the late-time SED is consistent with entering the radioactive decay phase at about one rest-frame year. This work demonstrates the power of deep, multi-epoch JWST observations for studying transients at cosmological distances.

An emerging baryon cycle in a galaxy 500 million years after the Big Bang

The emergence of stellar feedback as a regulator of galaxy growth marks a fundamental transition in cosmic history. At early times, rapid gas accretion and collapse may induce intense star formation before feedback becomes effective, producing feedback-free starbursts. When and how such bursts subsequently develop into self-regulated baryon cycles remain observationally unknown. Here we show that Gz9p3, a merging galaxy at $z=9.311$, is caught in this transition only 500 million years after the Big Bang. Deep JWST spectroscopy reveals a substantial neutral-gas reservoir along its merger-driven tidal structure and a multiphase outflow. Fine-structure absorption provides the first direct measurement of the electron density of the cool outflowing gas at high redshift ($\approx\,17\,{\rm cm^{-3}}$), yielding a mass-loading factor among the highest yet measured for galaxies of comparable stellar mass. The emergence of such efficient feedback after an intense burst is consistent with the delayed onset of feedback expected in feedback-free starburst models. The cool outflowing gas is unlikely to escape the host halo, implying that much of this metal-enriched material may remain available for future recycling through the circumgalactic medium. Gz9p3 therefore provides an early view of a baryon cycle being established through the interplay of merger-driven gas redistribution, bursty star formation and stellar feedback, suggesting that feedback-regulated recycling was already shaping galaxy growth during the epoch of reionization.

MSA-3D: Rotation Curves and Dark Matter Fractions at z~0.5-1.7 with JWST/NIRSpec

We present rotation curves and inner mass distributions for 30 star-forming galaxies at $0.5<z<1.7$, observed with JWST/NIRSpec as part of the MSA-3D Cycle 1 survey. Combining spatially resolved ionised-gas kinematics with JWST/NIRCam imaging, we constrain baryonic and dark matter contributions through forward dynamical modelling for galaxies extending down to stellar masses of $\sim10^{9}M_\odot$. For the 23 galaxies in our primary statistical sample, we find predominantly rotationally supported disks with intrinsic dispersions $σ_0\sim31$-65 km s$^{-1}$ and a wide range of dark matter fractions, $f_{DM}(R_e)\sim0.1$-0.9, with a median of 0.63 and substantial galaxy-to-galaxy scatter of $\sim0.2$ dex. These results are supported by a complementary consistency check using stellar mass maps and SFR-derived gas profiles. Among the 19 galaxies reaching $\gtrsim2R_e$, we identify six rising, six flat, and seven falling rotation curves. These classes define an observed ordering from rotationally dominated, dark-matter-rich disks ($V_{rot}/σ_0\approx4$, $f_{DM}\gtrsim0.7$) to more dispersion-supported systems with centrally concentrated baryonic mass distributions ($V_{rot}/σ_0\approx2$, $f_{DM}\lesssim0.55$). The stellar Tully-Fisher relation lies close to the local relation evolved under the adopted self-similar $Λ$CDM scaling. A simplified seeing-degradation test shifts the inferred normalisation by ~0.2 dex at fixed $V_c$, suggesting that spatial resolution contributes to, but does not fully explain, differences among high-redshift Tully-Fisher measurements. Overall, MSA-3D provides a high-resolution extension of previous surveys toward lower stellar masses, spanning $9.0 < \log(M_\star/M_\odot) < 11.2$, and reinforces that star-forming disks near $z\sim1$ span a broad range of dynamical states and inner mass distributions.

MSA-3D: Connecting the Chemical and Kinematic Structures of Galaxies at $z \sim 1$

We investigate the connection between ionized gas kinematics and gas-phase metallicity gradients in 21 star-forming galaxies at $0.5 < z < 1.7$ from the MSA-3D survey, using spatially resolved JWST/NIRSpec slit-stepping observations. Galaxy kinematics are characterized by the ratio of rotational velocity to intrinsic velocity dispersion, $v/σ$, measured at $1.5\,R_e$, where $R_e$ is the effective radius. We find that dynamically hotter disks exhibit systematically flatter metallicity gradients, with a moderate anti-correlation between metallicity gradient and $v/σ$ (Pearson $r=-0.43$, $p=0.05$) and a linear fit yields a slope of $\sim 0.005$ dex per dex in $v/σ$, weaker than the dependence on stellar mass. A significantly stronger anti-correlation is observed with $R_e/σ$, interpreted as a proxy for the radial mixing timescale ($r=-0.59$, $p=0.005$), indicating that cumulative radial mixing more directly regulates chemical stratification. The metallicity gradients in our sample are uniformly shallow, indicating that efficient turbulent mixing in kinematically settled disks regulates the chemical structure of typical star-forming galaxies at $z\sim1$.

The Structure and Evolution of LRDs: Insights from JWST NIRSpec Medium and High Resolution Spectroscopy at $z\sim4$

We present an analysis of medium/high-resolution JWST/NIRSpec spectra for 11 LRDs at $z \sim 4$. By decomposing the broad and narrow components of the Balmer emission lines, we investigate the connection between line emission and UV/optical continua for the LRD population. We find that the broad H$α$ luminosity strongly correlates with the optical continuum (but not with the UV), indicating a common AGN origin for both. In contrast, the [O III] line strength is correlated with the UV continuum rather than the optical. Using the width and luminosity of the broad H$α$ line, we estimate central black hole masses of $10^6-10^8 M_{\odot}$ accreting at high Eddington ratios, consistent with an early ($λ_{\rm Edd} \sim 0.6$), rapid-growth phase of AGN evolution. Assuming a constant mass accretion rate in the framework of slim-disk models, we infer growth timescales of $\sim 10^5-10^7\rm yr$, and suggest LRDs may evolve into narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies. Upper limits from our spectra indicate that LRDs exhibit intrinsically weak optical Fe II emission compared to typical AGN. To simultaneously account for the inferred broad-line region size and observed luminosity, we propose a "Clumpy Envelope" model in which the optical emission arises from an extended, clumpy gas with a characteristic radius of tens of light-days. The diversity in observed optical continuum shapes can be explained by radial temperature gradients and self-absorption effects within this structure. Our results demonstrate the power of JWST high-resolution spectroscopy in probing the central engines and physical nature of the LRD population.

Galaxy Metallicity Gradients in the Reionization Epoch from the FIRE-2 Simulations

We employ the high-redshift suite of FIRE-2 cosmological hydrodynamic zoom-in simulations to investigate the evolution of gas-phase metallicity radial gradients in galaxies in the epoch of reionization (EoR). Our sample consists of 22 galaxies spanning the redshift range $z \sim 10-5$. We find that galaxies at $z\sim10$ exhibit a median metallicity gradient of $-0.15\,\mathrm{dex\cdot kpc^{-1}}$ with substantial scatter, which gradually flatten to $-0.1\,\mathrm{dex\cdot kpc^{-1}}$ at $z\sim6$, accompanied by a reduction in scatter. In the EoR, metallicity gradients correlate positively with stellar mass: more massive galaxies display flatter gradients with smaller scatter, broadly consistent with recent JWST observations. At fixed stellar mass, galaxies with higher star formation rates (SFRs) exhibit steeper negative gradients, while sSFR shows a strong anti-correlation with gradient slope. Because EoR galaxies in FIRE-2 generally lack significant rotational support, we adopt the ratio of peak-to-peak velocity shear to twice the velocity dispersion ($Δv/2σ$) as a proxy for the strength of gas flows. We find a strong positive correlation between metallicity gradients and $Δv/2σ$: galaxies with lower $Δv/2σ$ (i.e., weaker gas flows) tend to exhibit steeper negative gradients. Furthermore, galaxies with steeper gradients display higher central SFR surface densities, suggesting localized star formation with inefficient interstellar medium mixing that drives inside-out chemical enrichment in galaxy evolution in the early Universe.

The GLASS-JWST Early Release Science Program. V. H$α$ luminosity functions at $z\sim1.3$ and $z\sim2.0$

We present H$α$ luminosity function (LF) measurements at redshifts $z\sim1.3$ and $z\sim2.0$ using JWST NIRISS grism data from the GLASS-JWST survey. Based on emission lines spectroscopically identified in the F115W, F150W and F200W filters, we select 99 H$α$ emitters. Through detailed effective volume and completeness analysis for each source, we construct the H$α$ LF in two redshift bins. Thanks to the sensitivity of NIRISS WFSS and gravitational lensing magnification, our sample reaches intrinsic H$α$ luminosities $\sim$10 times deeper than previous grism surveys, down to $L_{\rm Hα}\sim10^{40.5}~\rm erg~s^{-1}$ at $z\sim1.3$ and $L_{\rm Hα}\sim10^{40.9}~\rm erg~s^{-1}$ at $z\sim2.0$ with completeness larger than 0.8, corresponding to star formation rates of 0.4 and 1.0 $M_{\odot}~\rm yr^{-1}$, respectively. We robustly constrain the faint-end slope of the H$α$ luminosity function to be $-1.50^{+0.14}_{-0.08}$ at $z\sim1.3$ and $-1.60^{+0.17}_{-0.09}$ at $z\sim2.0$ after considering the cosmic variance of $\sim 20\%$, consistent with previous estimations. The emission-line samples presented here will enable further detailed studies of galaxy properties including metallicities. We find a negligible contribution from bright active galactic nuclei in our sample. We estimate integrated cosmic star formation rate densities of $0.097^{+0.015}_{-0.016}~M_{\odot}~\rm yr^{-1}~Mpc^{-3}$ at $z\sim1.3$ and $0.129^{+0.025}_{-0.030}~M_{\odot}~\rm yr^{-1}~Mpc^{-3}$ at $z\sim2.0$. The methodology presented here can be readily applicable to other JWST slitless spectroscopic datasets and future wide-field slitless surveys, including those from Euclid, Roman, and the Chinese Space Station Telescope.

Discovery of a gas-enshrouded broad-line AGN at z $\sim$ 7

The Lyman-alpha (Ly$α$) absorption profile in star-forming galaxies serves as a powerful tracer of the extended, dense neutral hydrogen in their surroundings during the Epoch of Reionization (EoR). We report a unique galaxy, A2744-z7DLA, at $z\approx 6.87$ gravitationally lensed by the foreground galaxy cluster Abell 2744, which exhibits both moderate Ly$α$ emission and damped Ly$α$ absorption, suggesting the presence of a dense neutral hydrogen environment. Our analysis suggests that the UV continuum turnover near Ly$α$ is more likely shaped by a damped Ly$α$ system rather than nebular continuum from two photon process. We analyze the physical properties of A2744-z7DLA with spectroscopic and photometric data from the JWST and the HST. The galaxy shows a compact morphology ($r_e \sim 0.3\ {\rm kpc}$) and a broadened H$α$ emission line, suggesting possible AGN activity. The broad component of H$α$ has a FWHM of $2721 \pm 200\ {\rm km\ s^{-1}}$, corresponding to a black hole mass of $M_{\rm BH}=2.90^{+2.35}_{-1.28}\times 10^7 M_\odot$ and a black hole-to-stellar mass ratio of $\log (M_{\rm BH}/M_{\rm stellar}) = -1.58^{+0.45}_{-0.34}$. The Balmer decrement ($\rm Hα/Hβ$) yields a dust attenuation of $\rm A_V \approx 1.15 \pm 0.23$, indicating that this system is less dust-rich than some "little red dots". Furthermore, we perform SED fitting using both stellar and AGN models. The results show that the UV and optical wavelengths are dominated by star-forming regions, while the AGN component contributes primarily at longer wavelengths. This work provides new insights into the interplay between star formation, neutral gas, and potential AGN activity in galaxies during the EoR.

MSA-3D: Metallicity Gradients in Galaxies at $z\sim1$ with JWST/NIRSpec Slit-stepping Spectroscopy

The radial gradient of gas-phase metallicity is a powerful probe of the chemical and structural evolution of star-forming galaxies, closely tied to disk formation and gas kinematics in the early universe. We present spatially resolved chemical and dynamical properties for a sample of 25 galaxies at $0.5 \lesssim z \lesssim 1.7$ from the \msasd survey. These innovative observations provide 3D spectroscopy of galaxies at a spatial resolution approaching JWST's diffraction limit and a high spectral resolution of $R\simeq2700$. The metallicity gradients measured in our galaxy sample range from $-$0.03 to 0.02 dex~kpc$^{-1}$. Most galaxies exhibit negative or flat radial gradients, indicating lower metallicity in the outskirts or uniform metallicity throughout the entire galaxy. We confirm a tight relationship between stellar mass and metallicity gradient at $z\sim1$ with small intrinsic scatter of 0.02 dex~kpc$^{-1}$. Our results indicate that metallicity gradients become increasingly negative as stellar mass increases, likely because the more massive galaxies tend to be more ``disky". This relationship is consistent with the predictions from cosmological hydrodynamic zoom-in simulations with strong stellar feedback. This work presents the effort to harness the multiplexing capability of JWST NIRSpec/MSA in slit-stepping mode to map the chemical and kinematic profiles of high-redshift galaxies in large samples and at high spatial and spectral resolution.
