A cross-modal generative model for incomplete and degraded prostate MRI with multicentre clinical validation

Missing or degraded sequences can limit prostate multiparametric MRI. We developed MSCNet, a sequence-conditioned cross-modal generative framework for reconstructing unavailable contrasts and restoring degraded acquisitions. Across ten completion tasks, task-specific MSCNet achieved mean structural similarity of 0.818 versus 0.798 for the strongest task-matched comparators; matched-capacity analyses showed larger differences in lesion fidelity and boundary preservation. In a blinded 1,000-case reader study, overall image quality met the prespecified non-inferiority criterion for DWI, ADC and T2W completion, but not T1W. In a separate 200-case diagnostic assessment, AUCs for clinically significant cancer were 0.860 with acquired images, 0.841 with MSCNet and 0.797 with baseline-generated images. A locked 186-case three-hospital cohort supported multicentre transportability. These retrospective results support quality-controlled cross-modal reconstruction as an adjunct to acquired prostate MRI.

KOAL: Knowledge-Driven Prostate Cancer Grading with Ordinal-Aware Learning

Non-invasive prediction of Gleason Grade Group (GGG) in prostate cancer using multiparametric MRI (mpMRI) is clinically vital for reducing unnecessary biopsies. Existing GGG prediction methods face two major limitations. First, they often overlook non-image information critical for GGG prediction, including age, prostate-specific antigen (PSA), and expert priors embedded in radiology reports. Second, they tend to oversimplify GGG as flat categorical labels, failing to account for its intrinsic hierarchy of primary and secondary Gleason patterns. To this end, we propose a novel Knowledge-Driven Ordinal-Aware Learning (KOAL) framework with three synergistic modules. Specifically, the Clinical-Context Modulation (CCM) module uses clinical variables (e.g., age and PSA) to dynamically modulate discriminative image representations. The Knowledge-Guided Prototype Alignment (KGPA) module leverages an LLM to extract group-specific expert knowledge from training radiology reports and clinical guidelines, producing offline semantic anchors describing grade-specific radiological findings without requiring patient-specific reports at inference. Through prototype contrastive alignment, patient-specific mpMRI representations are matched with these anchors to promote pathology-aligned representation learning. The Hierarchical Ordinal-aware Constraints (HOC) module decouples primary and secondary Gleason pattern prediction and maps their probabilistic outputs to GGG via a Differentiable Bio-logic Mapping Layer (DBML), ensuring pathological grading consistency. Experiments on public PI-CAI and in-house datasets demonstrate that KOAL outperforms state-of-the-art methods. Code is available at: https://github.com/Gother-GZ/KOAL.

Youtu-LLM: Unlocking the Native Agentic Potential for Lightweight Large Language Models

We introduce Youtu-LLM, a lightweight yet powerful language model that harmonizes high computational efficiency with native agentic intelligence. Unlike typical small models that rely on distillation, Youtu-LLM (1.96B) is pre-trained from scratch to systematically cultivate reasoning and planning capabilities. The key technical advancements are as follows: (1) Compact Architecture with Long-Context Support: Built on a dense Multi-Latent Attention (MLA) architecture with a novel STEM-oriented vocabulary, Youtu-LLM supports a 128k context window. This design enables robust long-context reasoning and state tracking within a minimal memory footprint, making it ideal for long-horizon agent and reasoning tasks. (2) Principled "Commonsense-STEM-Agent" Curriculum: We curated a massive corpus of approximately 11T tokens and implemented a multi-stage training strategy. By progressively shifting the pre-training data distribution from general commonsense to complex STEM and agentic tasks, we ensure the model acquires deep cognitive abilities rather than superficial alignment. (3) Scalable Agentic Mid-training: Specifically for the agentic mid-training, we employ diverse data construction schemes to synthesize rich and varied trajectories across math, coding, and tool-use domains. This high-quality data enables the model to internalize planning and reflection behaviors effectively. Extensive evaluations show that Youtu-LLM sets a new state-of-the-art for sub-2B LLMs. On general benchmarks, it achieves competitive performance against larger models, while on agent-specific tasks, it significantly surpasses existing SOTA baselines, demonstrating that lightweight models can possess strong intrinsic agentic capabilities.

Object-Centric 3D Gaussian Splatting for Strawberry Plant Reconstruction and Phenotyping

Strawberries are among the most economically significant fruits in the United States, generating over $2 billion in annual farm-gate sales and accounting for approximately 13% of the total fruit production value. Plant phenotyping plays a vital role in selecting superior cultivars by characterizing plant traits such as morphology, canopy structure, and growth dynamics. However, traditional plant phenotyping methods are time-consuming, labor-intensive, and often destructive. Recently, neural rendering techniques, notably Neural Radiance Fields (NeRF) and 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS), have emerged as powerful frameworks for high-fidelity 3D reconstruction. By capturing a sequence of multi-view images or videos around a target plant, these methods enable non-destructive reconstruction of complex plant architectures. Despite their promise, most current applications of 3DGS in agricultural domains reconstruct the entire scene, including background elements, which introduces noise, increases computational costs, and complicates downstream trait analysis. To address this limitation, we propose a novel object-centric 3D reconstruction framework incorporating a preprocessing pipeline that leverages the Segment Anything Model v2 (SAM-2) and alpha channel background masking to achieve clean strawberry plant reconstructions. This approach produces more accurate geometric representations while substantially reducing computational time. With a background-free reconstruction, our algorithm can automatically estimate important plant traits, such as plant height and canopy width, using DBSCAN clustering and Principal Component Analysis (PCA). Experimental results show that our method outperforms conventional pipelines in both accuracy and efficiency, offering a scalable and non-destructive solution for strawberry plant phenotyping.

3D carbon allotropes: Topological quantum materials with obstructed atomic insulating phases, multiple bulk-boundary correspondences, and real topology

The study of topological phases with unconventional bulk-boundary correspondences and nontrivial real Chern number has garnered significant attention in the topological states of matter. Using the first-principle calculations and theoretical analysis, we perform a high-throughput material screening of the 3D obstructed atomic insulators (OAIs) and 3D real Chern insulators (RCIs) based on the Samara Carbon Allotrope Database (SACADA). Results show that 422 out of 703 3D carbon allotropes are 3D OAIs with multiple bulk-boundary correspondences, including 2D obstructed surface states (OSSs) and 1D hinge states, which are in one dimension and two dimensions lower than the 3D bulk, respectively. The 2D OSSs in these OAIs can be modified when subjected to appropriate boundaries, which benefits the investigation of surface engineering and the development of efficient topological catalysts. These 422 OAIs, which have 2D and 1D boundary states, are excellent platforms for multi-dimensional topological boundaries research. Remarkably, 138 of 422 OAIs are also 3D RCIs, which show a nontrivial real topology in the protection of spacetime inversion symmetry. Our work not only provides a comprehensive list of 3D carbon-based OAIs and RCIs, but also guides their application in various aspects based on multiple bulk-boundary correspondences and real topological phases.
