Robust Wideband Channel Estimation for mmWave Massive MIMO Systems With Beam Squint

This paper investigates the robust wideband channel estimation problem in the millimeter-wave (mmWave) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. In such a scenario, the beam squint effect that the array response vectors vary with different frequencies and the impulsive noise are in existence, which pose great challenges for accurate channel estimation. Directly applying the existing channel estimation methods usually suffers significant performance degradation, since they are proposed based on the assumptions of frequency-invariant array response vectors and Gaussian distributed noise. To address these issues, this paper proposes a novel wideband channel estimation method with robustness to impulsive noise. Specifically, the proposed method incorporates a cyclic refinement step to overcome the estimation inaccuracy caused by the greedy nature of matching-pursuit-esque algorithms. In particular, the generalized $\ell_p$-norm minimization criterion is adopted in Newton's method to improve the performance robustness against the non-Gaussian impulsive noise. Numerical results are provided to verify the superior performance of the proposed method over the existing representative benchmarks.

Achievable Rate Maximization Pattern Design for Reconfigurable MIMO Antenna Array

Reconfigurable multiple-input multiple-output can provide performance gains over traditional MIMO by reshaping the channels, i.e., introducing more channel realizations. In this paper, we focus on the achievable rate maximization pattern design for reconfigurable MIMO systems. Firstly, we introduce the matrix representation of pattern reconfigurable MIMO (PR-MIMO), based on which a pattern design problem is formulated. To further reveal the effect of the radiation pattern on the wireless channel, we consider pattern design for both the single-pattern case where the optimized radiation pattern is the same for all the antenna elements, and the multi-pattern case where different antenna elements can adopt different radiation patterns. For the single-pattern case, we show that the pattern design is equivalent to a redistribution of gains among all scattering paths, and an eigenvalue optimization based solution is obtained. For the multi-pattern case, we propose a sequential optimization framework with manifold optimization and eigenvalue decomposition to obtain near-optimal solutions. Numerical results validate the superiority of PR-MIMO systems over traditional MIMO in terms of achievable rate, and also show the effectiveness of the proposed solutions.

Reconfigurable MIMO towards Electro-magnetic Information Theory: Capacity Maximization Pattern Design

In this paper, we focus on the pattern reconfigurable multiple-input multiple-output (PR-MIMO), a technique that has the potential to bridge the gap between electro-magnetics and communications towards the emerging Electro-magnetic Information Theory (EIT). Specifically, we focus on the pattern design problem aimed at maximizing the channel capacity for reconfigurable MIMO communication systems, where we firstly introduce the matrix representation of PR-MIMO and further formulate a pattern design problem. We decompose the pattern design into two steps, i.e., the correlation modification process to optimize the correlation structure of the channel, followed by the power allocation process to improve the channel quality based on the optimized channel structure. For the correlation modification process, we propose a sequential optimization framework with eigenvalue decomposition to obtain near-optimal solutions. For the power allocation process, we provide a closed-form power allocation scheme to redistribute the transmission power among the modified subchannels. Numerical results show that the proposed pattern design scheme offers significant improvements over legacy MIMO systems, which motivates the application of PR-MIMO in wireless communication systems.

Structured Distributed Compressive Channel Estimation over Doubly Selective Channels

For an orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) system over a doubly selective (DS) channel, a large number of pilot subcarriers are needed to estimate the numerous channel parameters, resulting in low spectral efficiency. In this paper, by exploiting temporal correlation of practical wireless channels, we propose a highly efficient structured distributed compressive sensing (SDCS) based joint multi-symbol channel estimation scheme. Specifically, by using the complex exponential basis expansion model (CE-BEM) and exploiting the sparsity in the delay domain within multiple OFDM symbols, we turn to estimate jointly sparse CE-BEM coefficient vectors rather than numerous channel taps. Then a sparse pilot pattern within multiple OFDM symbols is designed to obtain an ICI-free structure and transform the channel estimation problem into a joint-block-sparse model. Next, a novel block-based simultaneous orthogonal matching pursuit (BSOMP) algorithm is proposed to jointly recover coefficient vectors accurately. Finally, to reduce the CE-BEM modeling error, we carry out smoothing treatments of already estimated channel taps via piecewise linear approximation.Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed channel estimation scheme can achieve higher estimation accuracy than conventional schemes, although with a smaller number of pilot subcarriers.

Block Distributed Compressive Sensing Based Doubly Selective Channel Estimation and Pilot Design for Large-Scale MIMO Systems

The doubly selective (DS) channel estimation in the large-scale multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems is a challenging problem due to the large number of the channel coefficients to be estimated, which requires unaffordable and prohibitive pilot overhead. In this paper, firstly we conduct the analysis about the common sparsity of the basis expansion model (BEM) coefficients among all the BEM orders and all the transmit-receive antenna pairs. Then a novel pilot pattern is proposed, which inserts the guard pilots to deal with the inter carrier interference (ICI) under the superimposed pilot pattern. Moreover, by exploiting the common sparsity of the BEM coefficients among different BEM orders and different antennas, we propose a block distributed compressive sensing (BDCS) based DS channel estimator for the large-scale MIMO systems. Its structured sparsity leads to the reduction of the pilot overhead under the premise of guaranteeing the accuracy of the estimation. Furthermore, taking consideration of the block structure, a pilot design algorithm referred to as block discrete stochastic optimization (BDSO) is proposed. It optimizes the pilot positions by reducing the coherence among different blocks of the measurement matrix. Besides, a linear smoothing method is extended to large-scale MIMO systems to improve the accuracy of the estimation. Simulation results verify the performance gains of our proposed estimator and the pilot design algorithm compared with the existing schemes.

Position-Based Interference Elimination for High Mobility OFDM Channel Estimation in Multi-cell Systems

Orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFD-M) and multi-cell architecture are widely adopted in current high speed train (HST) systems for providing high data rate wireless communications. In this paper, a typical multi-antenna OFDM HST communication system with multi-cell architecture is considered, where the inter-carrier interference (ICI) caused by high mobility and multi-cell interference (MCI) are both taken into consideration. By exploiting the train position information, a new position-based interference elimination method is proposed to eliminate both the MCI and ICI for a general basis expansion model (BEM). We show that the MCI and ICI can be completely eliminated by the proposed method to get the ICI-free pilots at each receive antenna. In addition, for the considered multi-cell HST system, we develop a low-complexity compressed channel estimation method and consider the optimal pilot pattern design. Both the proposed interference elimination method and the optimal pilot pattern are robust to the train speed and position,as well as the multi-cell multi-antenna system. Simulation results demonstrate the benefits and robustness of the proposed method in the multi-cell HST system.

Clustering Based Hybrid Precoding Design for Multi-User Massive MIMO Systems

Hybrid precoding has been recognized as a promising technology to combat the path loss of millimeter wave signals in massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. However, due to the joint optimization of the digital and analog precoding matrices as well as extra constraints for the analog part, the hybrid precoding design is still a tough issue in current research. In this paper, we adopt the thought of clustering in unsupervised learning and provide design schemes for fully-connected hybrid precoding (FHP) and adaptively-connected hybrid precoding (AHP) in multi-user massive MIMO systems. For FHP, we propose the hierarchical-agglomerative-clustering-based (HAC-based) scheme to explore the relevance among RF chains in optimal hybrid procoding design. The similar RF chains are merged into an individual RF chain when insufficient RF chains are equipped at the base station (BS). For AHP, we propose the modified-K-means-based (MKM-based) scheme to explore the relevance among antennas at the BS. The similar antennas are supported by the same RF chain to make full use of the flexible connection in AHP. Particularly, in proposed MKM-based AHP design, the clustering centers are updated by alternating-optimum-based (AO-based) scheme with a special initialization method, which is capable to individually provide feasible sub-connected hybrid precoding (SHP) design. Simulation results highlight the superior spectrum efficiency of proposed HAC-based FHP scheme, and the high power efficiency of proposed MKM-based AHP scheme. Moreover, all the proposed schemes are clarified to effectively handle the inter-user interference and outperform the existing work.

Distributed Compressive Sensing Based Doubly Selective Channel Estimation for Large-Scale MIMO Systems

Doubly selective (DS) channel estimation in largescale multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems is a challenging problem due to the requirement of unaffordable pilot overheads and prohibitive complexity. In this paper, we propose a novel distributed compressive sensing (DCS) based channel estimation scheme to solve this problem. In the scheme, we introduce the basis expansion model (BEM) to reduce the required channel coefficients and pilot overheads. And due to the common sparsity of all the transmit-receive antenna pairs in delay domain, we estimate the BEM coefficients by considering the DCS framework, which has a simple linear structure with low complexity. Further more, a linear smoothing method is proposed to improve the estimation accuracy. Finally, we conduct various simulations to verify the validity of the proposed scheme and demonstrate the performance gains of the proposed scheme compared with conventional schemes.
