Determining the Weight Spectrum of the Reed--Muller Codes RM(m-6,m)

The weight spectra of the Reed-Muller codes $RM(r,m)$ were unknown for $r=3,...,m-5$. In IEEE Trans. Inform. Theory 2024, Carlet determined the weight spectrum of $RM(m-5,m)$ for $m\ge10$ using the Maiorana-McFarland construction, where the result was tried to be extended to $RM(m-6,m)$, but many problems occurred and much work needed to be done. In this paper, we propose a novel way of constructing Reed--Muller codewords and determine the weight spectrum of $RM(m-6,m)$ for $m\ge12$, which gives a positive answer to an open question on the weight spectrum of $RM(m-c,m)$ for $c=6$. Moreover, we put forward a conjecture and verify it for some cases. If the conjecture is true, then that open question can be completely solved.

Trace Monomial Boolean Functions with Large High-Order Nonlinearities

Exhibiting an explicit Boolean function with a large high-order nonlinearity is an important problem in cryptography, coding theory, and computational complexity. We prove lower bounds on the second-order, third-order, and higher-order nonlinearities of some trace monomial Boolean functions. We prove lower bounds on the second-order nonlinearities of functions $\mathrm{tr}_n(x^7)$ and $\mathrm{tr}_n(x^{2^r+3})$ where $n=2r$. Among all trace monomials, our bounds match the best second-order nonlinearity lower bounds by \cite{Car08} and \cite{YT20} for odd and even $n$ respectively. We prove a lower bound on the third-order nonlinearity for functions $\mathrm{tr}_n(x^{15})$, which is the best third-order nonlinearity lower bound. For any $r$, we prove that the $r$-th order nonlinearity of $\mathrm{tr}_n(x^{2^{r+1}-1})$ is at least $2^{n-1}-2^{(1-2^{-r})n+\frac{r}{2^{r-1}}-1}- O(2^{\frac{n}{2}})$. For $r \ll \log_2 n$, this is the best lower bound among all explicit functions.

The Covering Radius of the Third-Order Reed-Muller Code RM(3,7) is 20

We prove the covering radius of the third-order Reed-Muller code RM(3,7) is 20, which was previously known to be between 20 and 23 (inclusive). The covering radius of RM(3, 7) is the maximum third-order nonlinearity among all 7-variable Boolean functions. It was known that there exist 7-variable Boolean functions with third-order nonlinearity 20. We prove the third-order nonlinearity cannot achieve 21. According to the classification of the quotient space of RM(6,6)/RM(3,6), we classify all 7-variable Boolean functions into 66 types. Firstly, we prove 62 types (among 66) cannot have third-order nonlinearity 21; Secondly, we prove function of the remaining 4 types can be transformed into a type (6, 10) function, if its third-order nonlinearity is 21; Finally, we transform type (6, 10) functions into a specific form, and prove the functions in that form cannot achieve third-order nonlinearity 21 (with the assistance of computers). By the way, we prove that the affine transformation group over any finite field can be generated by two elements.

The Covering Radius of the Reed--Muller Code $RM(2,7)$ is 40

It was proved by J. Schatz that the covering radius of the second order Reed--Muller code $RM(2, 6)$ is 18 (IEEE Trans Inf Theory 27: 529--530, 1985). However, the covering radius of $RM(2,7)$ has been an open problem for many years. In this paper, we prove that the covering radius of $RM(2,7)$ is 40, which is the same as the covering radius of $RM(2,7)$ in $RM(3,7)$. As a corollary, we also find new upper bounds for $RM(2,n)$, $n=8,9,10$.

On the Covering Radius of the Second Order Reed-Muller Code of Length 128

In 1981, Schatz proved that the covering radius of the binary Reed-Muller code $RM(2,6)$ is 18. For $RM(2,7)$, we only know that its covering radius is between 40 and 44. In this paper, we prove that the covering radius of the binary Reed-Muller code $RM(2,7)$ is at most 42. Moreover, we give a sufficient and necessary condition for Boolean functions of 7-variable to achieve the second-order nonlinearity 42.

A new construction of differentially 4-uniform permutations over $F_{2^{2k}}$

Permutations over $F_{2^{2k}}$ with low differential uniform, high algebraic degree and high nonlinearity are of great cryptographical importance since they can be chosen as the substitution boxes (S-boxes) for many block ciphers. A well known example is that the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) chooses a differentially 4-uniform permutation, the multiplicative inverse function, as its S-box. In this paper, we present a new construction of differentially 4-uniformity permutations over even characteristic finite fields and obtain many new CCZ-inequivalent functions. All the functions are switching neighbors in the narrow sense of the multiplicative inverse function and have the optimal algebraic degree and high nonlinearity.

Two Classes of Crooked Multinomials Inequivalent to Power Functions

It is known that crooked functions can be used to construct many interesting combinatorial objects, and a quadratic function is crooked if and only if it is almost perfect nonlinear (APN). In this paper, we introduce two infinite classes of quadratic crooked multinomials on fields of order $2^{2m}$. One class of APN functions constructed in [7] is a particular case of the one we construct in Theorem 1. Moreover, we prove that the two classes of crooked functions constructed in this paper are EA inequivalent to power functions and conjecture that CCZ inequivalence between them also holds.
