Commensurate and Incommensurate Structure of the Neutron Cross Section in LaSrCuO and YBaCuO

We study the evolution of the d-wave neutron cross-section with variable frequency ωand fixed T (below and above Tc) in two different cuprate families. The evolution from incommensurate to commensurate to incommensurate peaks is rather generic within an RPA-like scheme. This behavior seems to be in reasonable accord with experiments, and may help distinguish between this and the "stripe" scenario.

Frequency Evolution of Neutron Peaks Below Tc: Commensurate and Incommensurate Structure in LaSrCuO and YBaCuO

We study the evolution of the neutron cross-section with variable frequency $ω$ and fixed $T$ below $T_c$ in two different cuprate families. Our calculations, which predominantly probe the role of d-wave pairing, lead to generic features, independent of Fermi surface shapes. Among our findings, reasonably consistent with experiment, are (i) for $ω$ near the gap energy $Δ$, both optimal {LaSrCuO} and slightly underdoped YBCO exhibit (comparably) incommensurate peaks (ii) peak sharpening below $T_c$ is seen in {LaSrCuO}, (iii) quite generically, a frequency evolution from incommensurate to commensurate and then back to incommensurate structure is found with increasing $ω$. Due to their narrow $ω$ regime of stability, commensurate peaks in {LaSrCuO} should be extremely difficult to observe.

Quantum Critical Behavior in Kondo Systems

This article briefly reviews three topics related to the quantum critical behavior of certain heavy-fermion systems. First, we summarize an extended dynamical mean-field theory for the Kondo lattice, which treats on an equal footing the quantum fluctuations associated with the Kondo and RKKY couplings. The dynamical mean-field equations describe an effective Kondo impurity model with an additional coupling to vector bosons. Two types of quantum phase transition appear to be possible within this approach---the first a conventional spin-density-wave transition, the second driven by local physics. For the second type of transition to be realized, the effective impurity model must have a quantum critical point exhibiting an anomalous local spin susceptibility. In the second part of the paper, such a critical point is shown to occur in two variants of the Kondo impurity problem. Finally, we propose an operational test for the existence of quantum critical behavior driven by local physics. Neutron scattering results suggest that CeCu$_{6-x}$Au$_x$ passes this test.

Spatial Correlations in Dynamical Mean Field Theory

We further develop an extended dynamical mean field approach introduced earlier. It goes beyond the standard $D=\infty$ dynamical mean field theory by incorporating quantum fluctuations associated with intersite (RKKY-like) interactions. This is achieved by scaling the intersite interactions to the same power in 1/D as that for the kinetic terms. In this approach, a correlated lattice problem is reduced to a single-impurity Anderson model with additional self-consistent bosonic baths. Here, we formulate the approach in terms of perturbation expansions. We show that the two-particle vertex functions are momentum-dependent, while the single-particle self-energy remains local. In spite of this, the approach is conserving. Finally, we also determine the form of a momentum-dependent dynamical susceptibility; the resulting expression relates it to the corresponding Weiss field, local correlation function and (momentum-dependent) intersite coupling.

Andreev Reflection and Spin Injection into $s-$ and $d-$wave Superconductors

We study the effect of spin injection into $s-$ and $d-$wave superconductors, with an emphasis on the interplay between boundary and bulk spin transport properties. The quantities of interest include the amount of non-equilibrium magnetization ($m$), as well as the induced spin-dependent current ($I_s$) and boundary voltage ($V_s$). In general, the Andreev reflection makes each of the three quantities depend on a different combination of the boundary and bulk contributions. The situation simplifies either for half-metallic ferromagnets or in the strong barrier limit, where both $V_s$ and $m$ depend solely on the bulk spin transport/relaxation properties. The implications of our results for the on-going spin injection experiments in high $T_c$ cuprates are discussed.

Metal-Insulator Transition of Disordered Interacting Electrons

We calculate the corrections to the conductivity and compressibility of a disordered metal when the mean free path is smaller than the screening length. Such a condition is shown to be realized for low densities and large disorder. Analysis of the stability of the metallic state reveals a transition to the insulating state in two-dimensions.

Quantum critical behavior in the Kondo problem with a pseudogap

The variant of the single-impurity Kondo problem in which the conduction-band density of states has a power-law pseudogap at the Fermi energy is known to exhibit a zero-temperature phase transition at a finite exchange coupling. The critical properties of this transition are studied both for N=2 and for N>>1, where N is the spin degeneracy. The critical exponents are consistent with a simple scaling form for the free energy. For any finite N, the temperature exponent of the local spin susceptibility at the critical Kondo coupling varies continuously with the power of the pseudogap. This raises the possibility that a single-particle pseudogap is responsible for the anomalous behavior of certain heavy-fermion metals close to a magnetic quantum phase transition.

Spin Injection into a Luttinger Liquid

We study the effect of spin injection into a Luttinger liquid. The spin-injection-detection setup of Johnson and Silsbee is considered; here spins injected into the Luttinger liquid induce, across an interface with a ferromagnetic metal, either a spin-dependent current ($I_s$) or a spin-dependent boundary voltage ($V_s$). We find that the spin-charge separation nature of the Luttinger liquid affects $I_s$ and $V_s$ in a very different fashion. In particular, in the Ohmic regime, $V_s$ depends on the spin transport properties of the Luttinger liquid in essentially the same way as it would in the case of a Fermi liquid. The implications of our results for the spin-injection-detection experiments in the high $T_c$ cuprates are discussed.

Intersite Fluctuations and Spin-Charge Separation in the Extended Hubbard Model

We study the effects of intersite RKKY-like interactions in the mixed valence regime of a two-band extended Hubbard model. This model is known to display a metallic non-Fermi liquid state with spin-charge separation in the standard $D=\infty$ limit (where interactions lead to purely on-site fluctuations only). Using an extended $D=\infty$ approach, we find that the spin-charge separation survives the quantum fluctuations associated with arbitrary intersite density-density interactions and a finite range of intersite spin-exchange interactions. We determine the qualitative behavior of the spin, charge, and single-particle correlation functions. The implications of these results for the solution in finite spatial dimensions are discussed.

Non-Fermi Liquids in the Extended Hubbard Model

I summarize recent work on non-Fermi liquids within certain generalized Anderson impurity model as well as in the large dimensionality ($D$) limit of the two-band extended Hubbard model. The competition between local charge and spin fluctuations leads either to a Fermi liquid with renormalized quasiparticle excitations, or to non-Fermi liquids with spin-charge separation. These results provide new insights into the phenomenological similarities and differences between different correlated metals. While presenting these results, I outline a general strategy of local approach to non-Fermi liquids in correlated electron systems.

Kosterlitz-Thouless Transition and Short Range Spatial Correlations in an Extended Hubbard Model

We study the competition between intersite and local correlations in a spinless two-band extended Hubbard model by taking an alternative limit of infinite dimensions. We find that the intersite density fluctuations suppress the charge Kondo energy scale and lead to a Fermi liquid to non-Fermi liquid transition for repulsive on-site density-density interactions. In the absence of intersite interactions, this transition reduces to the known Kosterlitz-Thouless transition. We show that a new line of non-Fermi liquid fixed points replace those of the zero intersite interaction problem.

Toulouse Points and Non-Fermi Liquid States in the Mixed Valence Regime of the Generalized Anderson Model

We study the mixed valence regime of a generalized Anderson impurity model using the bosonization approach. This single impurity problem is defined by the $U=\infty$ Anderson model with an additional density-density interaction, as well as an explicit exchange interaction, between the impurity and conduction electrons. We find three points in the interaction parameter space at which all the correlation functions can be calculated explicitly. These points represent the mixed valence counterparts of the ususal Toulouse point for the Kondo problem, and are appropriately named the Toulouse points of the mixed valence problem. Two of the Toulouse points exhibit the strong coupling, Fermi liquid behavior. The third one shows spin-charge separation; here, the spin-spin correlation functions are Fermi-liquid-like, the charge-charge correlation functions and the single particle Green function have non-Fermi-liquid behaviors, and a pairing correlation function is enhanced compared to the Fermi liquid case. This third Toulouse point describes the novel intermediate mixed valence phase we have previously identified. In deriving these results, we emphasize the importance of keeping track of the anticommutation relation between the fermion fields when the bosonization method is applied to quantum impurity problems.

Spin Conductivity and Spin-Charge Separation in the High $T_c$ Cuprates

We study both the spin and electrical conductivities in models of relevance to the high $T_c$ cuprates. These models describe metallic states with or without spin-charge separation. We demonstrate that, given a linear in temperature dependence of the electrical resistivity, the spin resistivity should also be linear in temperature in the absence of spin-charge separation and under conditions appropriate at least for the optimally doped cuprates, but is in general {\it not} so in the presence of spin-charge separation. Based on these results, we propose to use the temperature dependence of the electron spin diffusion constant to diagnose spin-charge separation in the cuprates.

Critical Properties of the Mott Transition in the Hubbard Model

We introduce a systematic low-energy approach to strongly correlated electron systems in infinite dimensions, and apply it to the problem of the correlation-induced metal-insulator transition in the half-filled Hubbard model. We determine the low-energy scaling functions of the metallic state, including the single-particle Green function and dynamical spin susceptibility, as well as thermodynamic properties and relate them to experimental data in transition metal oxides.

Correlation Induced Insulator to Metal Transitions

We study a spinless two-band model at half-filling in the limit of infinite dimensions. The ground state of this model in the non-interacting limit is a band-insulator. We identify transitions to a metal and to a charge-Mott insulator, using a combination of analytical, Quantum Monte Carlo, and zero temperature recursion methods. The metallic phase is a non-Fermi liquid state with algebraic local correlation functions with universal exponents over a range of parameters.

Quantum Chemistry, Anomalous Dimensions, and the Breakdown of Fermi Liquid Theory in Strongly Correlated Systems

We formulate a local picture of strongly correlated systems as a Feynman sum over atomic configurations. The hopping amplitudes between these atomic configurations are identified as the renormalization group charges, which describe the local physics at different energy scales. For a metallic system away from half-filling, the fixed point local Hamiltonian is a generalized Anderson impurity model in the mixed valence regime. There are three types of fixed points: a coherent Fermi liquid (FL) and two classes of self-similar (scale invariant) phases which we denote incoherent metallic states (IMS). When the transitions between the atomic configurations proceed coherently at low energies, the system is a Fermi liquid. Incoherent transitions between the low energy atomic configurations characterize the incoherent metallic states. The initial conditions for the renormalization group flow are determined by the physics at rather high energy scales. This is the domain of local quantum chemistry. We use simple quantum chemistry estimates to specify the basin of attraction of the IMS fixed points.

Metallic Non-Fermi Liquid Phases of an Extended Hubbard Model in Infinite Dimensions

We study an extended Hubbard model in the limit of infinite dimensions and its zero dimensional counterpart, a generalized asymmetric Anderson model. In the impurity model we find three kinds of mixed valence states: a) the usual strong coupling state in which a resonance forms at the Fermi level; b) a weak coupling state in which neither the impurity spin nor the impurity charge degrees of freedom is quenched; and c) an intermediate coupling state where the spin but not the charge degree of freedom is quenched. The corresponding phases of the extended Hubbard model in infinite dimensions are a) a Fermi liquid; b) a non-Fermi liquid state with incoherent charge and spin excitations; and c) a non-Fermi liquid state with incoherent charge but coherent spin excitations. The non-Fermi liquid phases are incoherent metallic states with vanishing quasiparticle residue, self-similar local correlation functions, and asymptotically decoupled charge and spin excitations. The non-Fermi liquid phases occur for a wide range of parameters.

Spin Dynamics in the Normal State of High T_c Superconductors

We summarize our recent theoretical studies on the spin dynamics in the normal state of the metallic cuprates. The contrasting wave vector dependence of the dynamical spin structure factor $S({\bf q}, ω)$ in LaSrCuO and YBaCuO systems are attributed to the differences in the fermiology, in conjunction with strong Coulomb correlations. These effects are found to account also for the anomalous temperature and frequency dependence of $S({\bf q}, ω)$. We conclude that the low energy spin dynamics of the metallic cuprates are described in terms of correlated quasiparticles with a Luttinger Fermi surface and a non-zero antiferromagnetic exchange interaction.
