A Fast Radio Burst discovered in FAST drift scan survey

We report the discovery of a highly dispersed fast radio burst, FRB~181123, from an analysis of $\sim$1500~hr of drift-scan survey data taken using the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST). The pulse has three distinct emission components, which vary with frequency across our 1.0--1.5~GHz observing band. We measure the peak flux density to be $>0.065$~Jy and the corresponding fluence $>0.2$~Jy~ms. Based on the observed dispersion measure of 1812~cm$^{-3}$~pc, we infer a redshift of $\sim 1.9$. From this, we estimate the peak luminosity and isotropic energy to be $\lesssim 2\times10^{43}$~erg~s$^{-1}$ and $\lesssim 2\times10^{40}$~erg, respectively. With only one FRB from the survey detected so far, our constraints on the event rate are limited. We derive a 95\% confidence lower limit for the event rate of 900 FRBs per day for FRBs with fluences $>0.025$~Jy~ms. We performed follow-up observations of the source with FAST for four hours and have not found a repeated burst. We discuss the implications of this discovery for our understanding of the physical mechanisms of FRBs.

Discovery and timing of pulsars in the globular cluster M13 with FAST

We report the discovery of a binary millisecond pulsar (namely PSR J1641+3627F or M13F) in the globular cluster M13 (NGC 6205) and timing solutions of M13A to F using observations made with the Five-hundred-metre Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST). PSR J1641+3627F has a spin period of 3.00 ms and an orbital period of 1.4 days. The most likely companion mass is 0.16 M$_{\odot}$. M13A to E all have short spin periods and small period derivatives. We also confirm that the binary millisecond pulsar PSR J1641$+$3627E (also M13E) is a black widow with a companion mass around 0.02 M$_{\odot}$. We find that all the binary systems have low eccentricities compared to those typical for globular cluster pulsars and that they decrease with distance from the cluster core. This is consistent with what is expected as this cluster has a very low encounter rate per binary.

PSR J1926-0652: A Pulsar with Interesting Emission Properties Discovered at FAST

We describe PSR J1926-0652, a pulsar recently discovered with the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST). Using sensitive single-pulse detections from FAST and long-term timing observations from the Parkes 64-m radio telescope, we probed phenomena on both long and short time scales. The FAST observations covered a wide frequency range from 270 to 800 MHz, enabling individual pulses to be studied in detail. The pulsar exhibits at least four profile components, short-term nulling lasting from 4 to 450 pulses, complex subpulse drifting behaviours and intermittency on scales of tens of minutes. While the average band spacing P3 is relatively constant across different bursts and components, significant variations in the separation of adjacent bands are seen, especially near the beginning and end of a burst. Band shapes and slopes are quite variable, especially for the trailing components and for the shorter bursts. We show that for each burst the last detectable pulse prior to emission ceasing has different properties compared to other pulses. These complexities pose challenges for the classic carousel-type models.

Commissioning Progress of the FAST

The Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST) was completed with its main structure installed on September 25, 2016, after which it entered the commissioning phase. This paper aims to introduce the commissioning progress of the FAST over the past two years. To improve its operational reliability and ensure effective observation time, FAST has been equipped with a real-time information system for the active reflector system and hierarchical commissioning scheme for the feed support system, which ultimately achieves safe operation of the two systems. For meeting the high-performance indices, a high-precision measurement system was set up based on the effective control methods that were implemented for the active reflector system and feed support system. Since the commissioning of the FAST, a low-frequency ultra-wideband receiver and 19-beam 1.05-1.45 GHz receiver have been mainly used. Telescope efficiency, pointing accuracy, and system noise temperature were completely tested and ultimately achieved the acceptance indices of the telescope. The FAST has been in the process of national acceptance preparations and has begun to search for pulsars. In the future, it will still strive to improve its capabilities and expand its application prospects.

Deformation and stability of a viscous electrolyte drop in a uniform electric field

We study the deformation and breakup of an axisymmetric electrolyte drop which is freely suspended in an infinite dielectric medium and subjected to an imposed electric field. The electric potential in the drop phase is assumed small, so that its governing equation is approximated by a linearized Poisson-Boltzmann or modified Helmholtz equation (the Debye-Hückel regime). An accurate and efficient boundary integral method is developed to solve the low-Reynolds-number flow problem for the time-dependent drop deformation, in the case of arbitrary Debye layer thickness. Extensive numerical results are presented for the case when the viscosity of the drop and surrounding medium are comparable. Qualitative similarities are found between the evolution of a drop with a thick Debye layer (characterized by the parameter $χ\ll 1$, which is an inverse dimensionless Debye layer thickness) and a perfect dielectric drop in an insulating medium. In this limit, a highly elongated steady state is obtained for sufficiently large imposed electric field, and the field inside the drop is found to be well approximated using slender body theory. In the opposite limit $χ\gg 1$, when the Debye layer is thin, the drop behaves as a highly conducting drop, even for moderate permittivity ratio $Q=ε_1/ε_2$, where $ε_1, ε_2$ is the dielectric permittivity of drop interior and exterior, respectively. For parameter values at which steady solutions no longer exist, we find three distinct types of unsteady solution or breakup modes. These are termed conical end formation, end splashing, and open end stretching. The second breakup mode, end splashing, resembles the breakup solution presented in a recent paper [R. B. Karyappa et al., J. Fluid Mech. 754, 550-589 (2014)]. We compute a phase diagram which illustrates the regions in parameter space in which the different breakup modes occur.

Surface Tension Effects on Surface Instabilities of Dielectric Elastomers

Dielectric elastomers have recently been proposed for various biologically-relevant applications, in which they may operate in fluidic environments where surface tension effects may have a significant effect on their stability and reliability. Here, we present a theoretical analysis coupled with computational modeling for a generalized electromechanical analysis of surface stability in dielectric elastomers accounting for surface tension effects. For mechanically deformed elastomers, significant increases in critical strain and instability wavelength are observed for small elastocapillary numbers. When the elastomers are deformed electrostatically, both surface tension and the amount of pre-compression are found to substantially increase the critical electric field while decreasing the instability wavelength.

On the Symmetry of Polar Codes for Symmetric Binary-Input Discrete Memoryless Channels

In this paper, we study the symmetry of polar codes on symmetric binary-input discrete memoryless channels (B-DMC). The symmetry property of polar codes is originally pointed out in Arikan's work for general B-DMC channels. With the symmetry, the output vector $y_1^N$ ($N$ be the block length) can be divided into equivalence classes in terms of their transition probabilities. In this paper, we present a new frame of analysis on the symmetry of polar codes for B-DMC channels. Theorems are provided to characterize the symmetries among the received vectors.

The Five-Hundred-Meter Aperture Spherical Radio Telescope (FAST) Project

Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST) is a Chinese mega-science project to build the largest single dish radio telescope in the world. Its innovative engineering concept and design pave a new road to realize a huge single dish in the most effective way. FAST also represents Chinese contribution in the international efforts to build the square kilometer array (SKA). Being the most sensitive single dish radio telescope, FAST will enable astronomers to jump-start many science goals, for example, surveying the neutral hydrogen in the Milky Way and other galaxies, detecting faint pulsars, looking for the first shining stars, hearing the possible signals from other civilizations, etc. The idea of sitting a large spherical dish in a karst depression is rooted in Arecibo telescope. FAST is an Arecibo-type antenna with three outstanding aspects: the karst depression used as the site, which is large to host the 500-meter telescope and deep to allow a zenith angle of 40 degrees; the active main reflector correcting for spherical aberration on the ground to achieve a full polarization and a wide band without involving complex feed systems; and the light-weight feed cabin driven by cables and servomechanism plus a parallel robot as a secondary adjustable system to move with high precision. The feasibility studies for FAST have been carried out for 14 years, supported by Chinese and world astronomical communities. The project time is 5.5 years from the commencement of work in March of 2011 and the first light is expected to be in 2016. This review intends to introduce FAST project with emphasis on the recent progress since 2006. In this paper, the subsystems of FAST are described in modest details followed by discussions of the fundamental science goals and examples of early science projects.
